Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link!A shaky ad read and some friendly ribbing give way to a rare, candid conversion story: a Reformed pastor worn thin by 2020, family burdens, and Sunday dread begins asking God for an exit ramp he can't yet name. An old friend—now Catholic—offers a simple challenge: read the Catechism to learn the Church from the Church. So he does, pencil in hand. Circles for “yes,” rectangles for “I need more,” triangles for “no way.” Then daily Mass. Then Latin Mass. What surprises him first is the familiarity—the lectionary, the reverence, the shape of worship echoing his Lutheran childhood. What changes him next is Scripture: Hebrews 12 reframes worship as a present communion with the saints; Isaiah 22 and Matthew 16 connect the key and the office in a typology he already loves to preach.Meanwhile, life doesn't pause. His wife grieves, becomes a guardian overnight, and shoulders state paperwork while he strains to shepherd a congregation on an empty tank. One prayer breaks through the fog: Mary, be a mother to my wife while she's losing hers. Grace answers. The exit ramp appears on a Florida trip when his wife says, Maybe this is it. He resigns gently, stays through year‑end, and answers one summer's worth of honest questions—including a sermon on Mary's perpetual virginity built from the Reformers themselves. In January, they slip out of town to worship quietly. Friends notice and ask. There's no recruiting, just real answers. The Holy Spirit moves: four couples and their children, plus two reverts, begin OCIA and enter the Church. Seventeen souls. More ripples follow—his oldest starts OCIA in another city.We also talk about the temptations after conversion: platform, hot takes, “professional Catholic” life. He chooses stillness over speed, daily Mass over instant punditry, Our Lady and the saints over arguments for their own sake. He's drafting a practical guide to help Catholics “speak Protestant,” especially on typology and authority, but only with spiritual direction and doctrinal checks. If you've ever wondered how Scripture, suffering, and friendship might converge to redirect a life—and a community—this story will meet you there. If this moved you, share it with someone discerning, subscribe for more thoughtful conversations, and leave a review with the one moment that surprised you most.Support the showTake advantage of Recusant Cellar's "Christ the King" sale by heading over to https://recusantcellars.com/ and using code "BASED" for 20% off at checkout!********************************************************Please subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKsxnv80ByFV4OGvt_kImjQ?sub_confirmation=1https://www.avoidingbabylon.comMerchandise: https://avoiding-babylon-shop.fourthwall.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comFull Premium/Locals Shows on Audio Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1987412/subscribeRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssRumble: https://rumble.com/c/AvoidingBabylon

In this show, he talks with Alex about how Belichick's tenure got this toxic this quickly:* What he's gotten wrong in his first foray into college football* How the business of Bill and the business of UNC have diverged, repeatedly, and why that will make his eventual exit ugly* Why Belichick will not go quietly into the nightThis episode isn't just about UNC. It's also midseason news roundup full of topics that we wouldn't always get a chance to discuss on the weekly Tasting Menu or Hurry-Up shows. Trees can inspire us. Especially the redwood that teaches us about support and interconnection. Jan shares a bit of the tree magic that can remind each of us how best to grow and thrive and begin again!
This is Week 5 of our series Circles, where we're learning how God's Word guides us in strengthening the relational circles in our lives. This series isn't just about building better relationships—it's about divine realignments. God is repositioning some of us for greater impact and deeper joy, helping us step into His chosen connections that will change our life's course.Last week, we explored our inner circle and our relationship with God—the foundation of everything. Today, we dive into the outer circle—the people outside our immediate circle, those who feel different or even uncomfortable to us. These are our neighbors, co-workers, people at the store, even those we might ignore or block on social media. The question is: how do we relate to them? Our key verse is Colossians 4:5-6:"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."Why do outsiders matter?Because they matter to God. They are loved by Him, and many are in our lives for a reason. Just like the early Christians in Colossae—who faced hostility, rejection, and persecution—they refused to retreat or water down their faith. Instead, they made a difference by living intentionally and boldly. In a culture filled with division and deception, they stood firm, refusing to compromise. They knew Christ and carried His presence into the outside world, fulfilling the Great Commission: "Go and preach the Gospel to all nations." Their lives weren't just about getting by—they were about making an impact. Our faith was never meant to be hidden. Remember, light doesn't need permission to shine—darkness cannot overcome it. The resistance you encounter may be a sign that you're on the right track.Loving the outsiders means being wise in our manner, our moment, and our message:Wisdom in our manner:Mind your words — be gracious, kind, and respectful. Jesus said, "Let your words always be full of grace and seasoned with salt." Our words should preserve, heal, and attract others to Christ, not offend or push away. We're called to be witty, engaging, and loving—never abrasive or rude.Wisdom in our moment:Seize divine appointments. Be proactive in noticing opportunities God puts in your path. Whether it's a new neighbor, a co-worker, or a cashier at the store—these moments are orchestrated by God for meaningful connections. Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's lead and respond in faith.Wisdom in our message:Always be ready to share the hope you have. Your story, your church, your faith—these can be powerful bridges. Share the Gospel confidently, using words that are honest, compassionate, and truthful. Remember, our goal is to win hearts, not arguments.Love and truth go hand in hand. Grace without truth is meaningless. Truth without grace is harsh. Together, they bring healing and transformation.Ask yourself:Are my actions and words drawing people closer to Jesus, or pushing them away?Be intentional. Be wise. Make the most of every divine opportunity.Because, ultimately, guiding others to Christ is the heartbeat of our faith. Let's step out boldly, shining His light into the outer circle with wisdom, love, and grace. Are you ready?
Welcome back to Fintech Takes. I'm Alex Johnson, joined (as always) by my partner-in-recapping, Jason Mikula. First up: the uneasy détente in open banking is over. Jason and I haven't had a chance to debrief on Plaid's deal with JPMorgan Chase to pay for API access (so we do). Payments use cases remain the most expensive, Plaid is eating the fees (at least for now), and Chase looks like it's succeeded in hobbling Pay by Bank. We unpack why Plaid did the deal, what it means for other aggregators. Next up, color us nostalgic; back to BaaS Island we go! The FBI is probing Evolve. The scope reportedly extends to board members (including a16z), and new details suggest international money movement in Southeast Asia (tied to a $15M pig-butchering scheme). As the saying goes, bankers almost never go to jail; will this time be any different? Then, we turn to AI. FICO has announced a new product called a foundation model for financial services. The idea is to build smaller, domain-specific models that are cheaper, faster, and more reliable than generic LLMs, while adding predictive lift on top of existing analytics. The open questions: is this hype dressed up for Wall Street, or a clever way to squeeze extra predictive power out of structured financial datasets? And most of all: who is this really for? Plus, in our Can't Let It Go corner, Jason bristles about being labeled as “partisan” (in response to his response about the “Debanking” Executive Order) while I puzzle over Tether reportedly raising at a $500B valuation (the same as OpenAI, except Tether's core product is…not getting audited and telling everyone to “just trust us.”) Sign up for Alex's Fintech Takes newsletter for the latest insightful analysis on fintech trends, along with a heaping pile of pop culture references and copious footnotes. As September closes, forget lukewarm goals because this conversation is about striking the match yourself. Kelly of Western Workouts joins us for a conversation about the kind of fire fueled by self-belief, reckless confidence, and a refusal to waste energy on what doesn't matter. This episode began, as many of our best ones do, with a yap-and-cheer session that turned into a bonfire of ideas. We talk about why spite may get you moving, but it never leaves you satisfied, and why a process you love always beats an outcome that looks shiny but feels empty.Kelly brings her perspective from training horses, bodies, and minds. We add our lens of capacity, discernment, and real-life integration. Together we unravel what it means to build a fire of our own; whether that means claiming your time back from distractions, letting go without fanfare, or saying yes to hard things without fearing how hard they'll be.Listen In For …Why a self-belief bonfire outlasts a spite-fueled spark every time. The practice of reckless confidence: deciding you'll figure it out, then getting to work. How to be unbothered by noise, urgency, and opinions that don't serve you.The case for integration over silos when it comes to motherhood, work, and identity. When to simply step back into the bushes: no drama, no debate, just disengagement. Why discipline is less about willpower and more about respecting your own energy. How patience and slow-burn often set the stage for your boldest moves. The role your people play in elevating your fire instead of draining it.TL;DR (Minute by Minute)00:00 September check-in and the fire worth tending.06:15 Spite vs. self-belief: why empty wins don't satisfy.10:00 Process over outcome: act, adjust, repeat.25:30 Practicing being unbothered: disengaging with grace.30:00 Integration > silos: motherhood, work, identity.36:20 Reckless confidence and pouring the gasoline at your feet.42:45 Circles, standards, and raising your own algorithm.48:00 Closing: presence through the holidays, confidence that sustains.Where to Go From HereJoin the conversation: Screenshot this episode and tag @cowgirlsovercoffee and @westernworkouts on Instagram/Threads—tell us where you're pouring your gasoline this season.Grab the free Routine Playbook: Build daily structure that makes acting (and adjusting) easier.Connect with Kelly: Follow Western Workouts for strength, stamina, and no-nonsense confidence.Stay in the loop: Subscribe, review, and share so more women can light fires that actually last.
Last week we introduced circles as a helpful visual for some of Jesus's teachings. Join us as we circle back into how the circle can describe continuous breakthrough and how that gets to play out in your life!We tend to remember longer what we see than what we hear. This week's live Q&A centered on the core training principles that keep you and your horse progressing, even when things get tricky. We also chatted about the new YouTube series launching next month (behind-the-scenes and real-life training!) and shared updates from 30 Days to Round. What we coveredTiming and proactivity: Don't wait until your horse grabs the bit or throws the head—ride proactively with bend, flexion, and release before the problem starts.Breaking it down: Complex movements like half pass can't be “fixed” inside the half pass. Instead, go back to the components: forward, bend, sideways, alignment—then put it all back together.Consistency: Just like school for kids, horses develop mental focus and physical strength over years. Little-by-little work creates lifelong progress.Rider position and clarity: Your seat and shoulders should match the horse's body in lateral work. Inside seat bone down, shoulders parallel to shoulders, hips with hips. Stay soft, not stiff.Reward and positivity: Never miss an opportunity to praise. Clear, consistent, positive training helps your horse stay motivated and willing.Key takeawaysWork on inside rein to inside hind to improve control and suppleness.Circles and lateral exercises are your go-to when a horse gets heavy, resistant, or pops the head up.Don't measure engagement as “always there.” Even Grand Prix horses warm up in a normal trot before reaching true collection. Engagement comes in moments, not minutes. For younger horses, think “kindergarten attention span.” Keep it short, consistent, and gradually increase both mental focus and physical load.Happy Riding,AmeliaPS. In this episode of Hypnogeeks, Amanda chats with her friend and colleague Nicola Barragry — clinical hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, and creator of HypnoFlow. Nicola's inspiring story weaves together family life, personal loss, career shifts, and a lifelong commitment to helping others. From supporting her community as a teacher, council worker, and crisis advisor, to stepping fully into holistic healing, Nicola has built a unique toolkit that blends hypnotherapy, Reiki, and the Energy Alignment Method. She now runs two powerful initiatives: HypnoFlow, a year-long programme for clearing resistance and aligning subconscious beliefs, and Circles of Support, safe spaces where carers and community members can connect and be heard. This conversation is full of warmth and wisdom — and especially valuable for hypnotherapists and wellness professionals interested in blending modalities and deepening their work with subconscious communication.Key Highlights & Insights:0:13:21 – From teaching to crisis work: How Nicola recognised the limits of “broken systems” and developed her own approach to support clients holistically.0:26:55 – Discovering the Energy Alignment Method (EAM): Nicola shares her “aha moment”, realising that unresolved trauma and subconscious resistance often block transformation. She explains how EAM uses the body as a pendulum, working with sways, resistance, and reversals to access subconscious communication directly.0:37:41 – The five steps of EAM: A practical walk-through of how to identify resistance, trace beliefs back to their origin, release them with powerful statements, and replace them with aligned states of flow.0:56:40 – Blending Hypnotherapy & EAM: Nicola discusses how she integrates hypnosis with energy work, helping clients bypass resistance and deepen into subconscious communication. She uses metaphor, sanctuary spaces, and hypnotic techniques alongside energy alignment to create HypnoFlow.1:00:46 – The HypnoFlow Programme: A structured year-long journey blending hypnotherapy, energy alignment, and accountability. Participants work through universal laws, subconscious beliefs, physical health, relationships, lifestyle, wealth, and purpose — aligning every area of life. For hypnotherapists, it's an inspiring model of combining subconscious tools with holistic frameworks.1:10:56 – Circles of Support: Nicola's community initiative that offers safe spaces for carers, relatives of those in care homes, foster parents, teaching assistants, and charity workers. Unlike traditional support groups, Circles focus on holding space without agenda — a place for authentic presence, emotional release, and shared humanity. Hypnotherapists may recognise parallels with group hypnotherapy, supervision, and reflective practice.1:18:00 – Supervision & therapist support: Nicola has also trained as a hypnotherapy supervisor, bringing her unique blend of compassion, energy awareness, and subconscious communication to those working in the helping professions. Why listen? If you're a hypnotherapist, you'll find fresh inspiration in how Nicola blends EAM and hypnosis to work more intuitively with the subconscious. You'll also hear how she builds meaningful programmes and groups that address not just individual transformation, but the wider need for community connection. This episode is both a case study in professional reinvention and a reminder of the power of our work: to hold space, to listen beyond words, and to unlock the subconscious mind's capacity for healing.Support the showThis podcast is sponsored by The Northern College of Clinical Hypnotherapywww.thenortherncollegeofclinicalhypnotherapy.com

The gospel is opposed to slavery. Where the gospel permeates lives, the institution of slavery will be undermined and abolished. It is worth noting that the first generation of Christians who had been freed from slavery to sin, gladly called themselves slaves of God or of Christ (see 1 Tm 6:1; Phm 16). Paradoxically, this latter slavery is the highest human freedom. Cabal, T., Brand, C. O., Clendenen, E. R., Copan, P., Moreland, J. P., Powell, D. (2007). You might be wondering if you belong in a TFMR grief circle. Maybe you're questioning whether your story fits, whether your diagnosis was "severe enough," or whether you'll connect with other parents who made this impossible choice. The truth is, if you're asking these questions, you probably do belong here. The parents who join our TFMR grief circles share something profound - we're all mothers and fathers who chose to end suffering, even when the world doesn't understand that choice. You followed your heart and survival through the most impossible decision love has ever asked of you.Beyond that sacred shared experience, the parents who thrive in our circles tend to be busy but appreciate structure, they are naturally resilient (even when you don't feel it), and deeply kind - both to others and, we hope, eventually to yourselves.Whether you have living children or are trying to conceive again, whether your diagnosis was chromosomal or structural, for you or baby, whether you're weeks or years out from your loss - your story matters here. You matter here.TFMR GRIEF CIRCLE PROGRAM:If you're longing for intimate, ongoing group support, apply now for the Ascend TFMR Grief Circle

By recognizing harmful patterns, embracing God's grace, and adopting a new identity in Christ, you can find healing. Let's release the past and build better, healthier relationships that reflect God's love. It's time to break free from old cycles and live out a brighter future rooted in love and faith.

Bernie Maloney: From Permission-Seeking to Forgiveness-Begging—Agile Team Evolution in Self-Management Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Bernie defines success for Scrum Masters as creating teams that can thrive and do their best work independently. His ultimate goal is to make himself unnecessary - developing self-directing teams that step out of waiting for direction and instead seek permission or even beg forgiveness when needed. Using the "Circles and Soup" framework, Bernie helps teams stretch their circles of influence and control. He recognizes that every manager wants teams to succeed but may lack the necessary tools, making it crucial for Scrum Masters to coach managers as well. Bernie recommends building a backlog of organizational impediments and focusing on the top priority that will move the ball forward most effectively. Featured Retrospective Format for the Week: Sailboat Bernie champions the Sailboat retrospective format for its simplicity and adaptability. While the basic format is straightforward, he appreciates that you can add layers of complexity as needed. Bernie tends to keep retrospectives simple and also mentions the "What the Duck?" technique as another valuable retrospective tool. He suggests incorporating creative elements like having people build LEGO representations of what they're discussing, which helps teams visualize and engage with concepts more effectively. To know more about LEGO Serious Play, check out the Serious Play book. In this segment, we also refer to Dissociation in Psychology, which helps with "third position" coaching/thinking, and Bernie's video on creative retrospective formats. Self-reflection Question: How are you measuring whether your teams are becoming more self-directing, and what specific behaviors indicate they're ready to operate with less guidance? [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

"When you're pushing, you're working against resistance. When you're magnetic, resources flow toward you effortlessly." In this conversation, Marcus Du Sautoy explores the intricate relationship between mathematics and various forms of art, including music, literature, and visual arts. He discusses how mathematical concepts such as prime numbers, symmetry, and randomness influence creative processes and artistic expressions. Through examples from renowned artists like Shakespeare and Dali, Du Sautoy illustrates how mathematics serves as a blueprint for understanding and creating art, while also emphasizing the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of both fields.Takeaways Mathematics and art are deeply interconnected. The circle is fundamental to both mathematics and nature. Prime numbers are essential building blocks in mathematics. Music often employs mathematical structures for creativity. Shakespeare used prime numbers to disrupt rhythm. Symmetry plays a crucial role in both art and mathematics. Dali's work reflects his fascination with scientific ideas. Theatre allows for abstract exploration of mathematical concepts. Ambiguity is embraced in art but avoided in mathematics. Randomness can lead to unexpected creative outcomes.Chapters 00:00 Blueprints of Mathematics and Art 02:35 Defining Creativity and Its Interplay 04:24 Mathematicians as Collaborators with Artists 07:17 The Fractal Nature of Jackson Pollock's Art 12:54 The Significance of Circles in Mathematics 16:31 Exploring the Mystery of Prime Numbers 19:52 The Role of Primes in Music Composition 28:01 Mathematics and the Structure of Music 29:00 The Mathematical Foundations of Music 31:50 Art and Mathematics: Dali's Exploration 38:56 Theatrical Structures and Mathematical Concepts 43:46 The Distinct Narratives of Numbers and Art 48:07 Symmetry and Randomness: Blueprints of Creativity 58:49 Exploring Creativity Through MathematicsFollow Professor du Sautoy on Twitter, BlueSky, and find his new book here.Subscribe to Breaking Math wherever you get your podcasts.Follow Breaking Math on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Website, YouTube, TikTokFollow Autumn on Twitter, BlueSky, and InstagramBecome a guest hereemail: breakingmathpodcast@gmail.com

In honor of the recent passing of the eco-philosopher, Buddhist scholar, and dear friend Joanna Macy, we return to our interview with her from 2018. In this conversation, she traces the ways a life-long heart connection with the living world cultivated a resounding ecological awareness within her work and spirituality; and explores how we might return to an “ecological self” as a way to be of service amid the climate catastrophe. Joanna was also a seminal translator of Rainer Maria Rilke's poetry, finding his contemplations on the entwinement of grief, beauty, and spiritual life deeply resonant. You can hear Joanna recite, alongside Anita Burrows, a selection of their translations in our audio story Be Earth Now. Read the interview transcript. Photo by Adam Loften. A one year course for students of the occult in their quest for wisdom, revelation and enlightenment. In the third volume of his popular series of textbooks for students of the Western mystery tradition, John Michael Greer conducts training for a self-taught course for students to advance to the third degree of the Golden Section Fellowship.Building on the lessons and meditations of The Way of the Golden Section and The Way of the Four Elements, Greer presents an accessible guide for students to comprehend and access more of their own inner capabilities, bringing them closer to – and allowing them to experience for themselves – the transcendent spiritual realities at the heart of things.Drawing on teachings from the Universal Gnostic Church, American occult teachings, and temple tradition, The Way of the Secret Temple is divided into seven circles of studies and practices, each taking at least a month to complete. Students embarking on this course will become proficient in working with sacred geometry in temple design, using palm centres to heal and bless, fulfilling the duties of each of the five minor orders of the Universal Gnostic Church, and will develop their skills of communing with the spirits of the elements – as well as much more! The Way of the Secret Temple is the third step for students of the occult to continue developing and honing the skills essential for a magical education.John Michael Greer is the award-winning author of more than fifty books, including The New Encyclopedia of the Occult, The Druidry Handbook, The Celtic Golden Dawn and Circles of Power: An Introduction to Hermetic Magic. An initiate in Freemasonry, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the Martinist Order, and three Druid traditions, Greer served as the Grand Archdruid of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA) for twelve years. He is also the author of seventeen fantasy and science fiction novels and ten nonfiction books on peak oil and the future of industrial society.
