When putting together a bug-out bag in case of emergencies, don't forget your herbs! Just like a first aid kit, a go bag is best when you construct it according to your specific needs, and the needs of people you'll be with. This isn't a “one size fits all” situation! The same goes for circumstances when you need to shelter in place. A ‘stay-in stash' is just a go-bag without the go. It's an orderly, intentional accumulation of all the things you'll need if the power goes out for a week, or you can't leave your home for an extended period of time.Herbs, food, and ‘everything else' all need to go in there – and don't forget water! In this episode we discuss what to include, what to avoid, and ways to keep your stock rotating and fresh for a moment of need.Mentioned in this episode:HHP 233: Emergency Readiness Needs A Meal PlanFEMA AppWe're highlighting first aid herbalism on the podcast all month. My relationship with herbs goes back even further than when I started practicing intentional witchcraft. Long before I started learning about their metaphysical properties or their medicinal qualities, I was playing around with their flavors in cooking and teas. It was my budding magickal practice that formally introduced me to their energetics, a door-opener I think many, many witches are presented with. And so today's episode of That Witch Podcast is to formally introduce you to the magick of herbalism and what role this can play in your own lifestyle. We'll discuss what defines an ‘herb,' what is ‘herbalism,' and most importantly, what are the different ways you can partner with these botanical heroes as a modern with and energy practitioner. In this episode I mention:Anima Mundi Herbals Mountain Rose Herbs A Box of Magick by Jamie Della The many works by Rosemary Gladstar Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magickal Herbs by Scott Cunningham Llewellyn's Book of Correspondences by Sandra Kynes ★|| T H E  N E I G H B O R H O O D ||YouTube: That Witch Next DoorEmail Newsletter: thatwitchnextdoor.comInstagram: @thatwitch.nextdoorTikTok: @thatwitch.nextdoorPinterest: @thatwitchdaniContact: thatwitchnextdoor.com/conjurethatwitch

This episode of The Folklore Podcast is an interview of two halves, as host Mark Norman sits down to chat with herbalist and writer Su Bristow. In an interview recorded live at Su's dining table, the first half of the show explores her work as a herbalist. We chat about the history of using plants in folk medicine, the approaches used and how valuable or otherwise volumes such as Culpeper's Herbal are in the modern world. Su discusses her techniques and dispels some of the myths about herbal treatments and plants in folklore.Moving on from this, the conversation turns to Su's writing. As well as two non-fiction books on herbalism, Su is also the author of two folklore-themed novels. The conversation begins with her prize-winning first novel 'Sealskin' which is a reimagining of the Scottish selkie legends, before turning to 'The Fair Folk' and a foray into fairy folklore. Finally, Su discusses the novel that she is currently working on, and reads a short extract from her work in progress.Find Su on the internet at https://subristow.weebly.com/To help to keep The Folklore Podcast going and producing even more folklore content, please consider joining the Patreon page at www.patreon.com/thefolklorepodcast with a small monthly donation from just £1. Have you been studying herbs for a while, but you still feel unsure about how to combine them into an effective formula?  Or maybe you're newer to herbalism and ready to dive into the art and science of formulation? Formulation is one of my favorite parts of herbal medicine, so I'm excited to kick off a new series called The Anatomy of a Formula. I love the synergy that emerges when herbs are combined in intelligent, intentional ways—and the specificity you can achieve when formulating for a particular person. It's both powerful and fun. However, for budding herbalists, formulation can initially feel daunting and a little confusing. Without some kind of framework or guidance, many people end up just tossing a bunch of herbs into a bottle and hoping it works. That's not an ideal approach because you're essentially leaving your therapeutics to chance. Instead, approach formulation with strategy, intention, and precision, tailored to the individual you're working with.  Here's what we'll cover in this post: • A brief history of formulation in North American herbalism • Formulation challenges and how to fix the problem • The foundations of herbal formulas: pairs and triplets • The anatomy of an effective formula     ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   Shop our herbal products:  https://naturasophiaspagyrics.com/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. With perspectives gleaned from traditional Western herbalism, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, Alchemy, Medical Astrology, and traditional cultures from around the world, The Plant Path provides unique insights, skills and strategies for the practice of true holistic herbalism. From clinical to spiritual perspectives, we don't just focus on what herbs are "good for," but rather who they are as intelligent beings, and how we can work with them to heal us physically and consciously evolve.   ———————————— ABOUT SAJAH ———————————— Sajah Popham is the author of Evolutionary Herbalism and the founder of the School of Evolutionary Herbalism, where he trains herbalists in a holistic system of plant medicine that encompasses clinical Western herbalism, medical astrology, Ayurveda, and spagyric alchemy. His mission is to develop a comprehensive approach that balances the science and spirituality of plant medicine, focusing on using plants to heal and rejuvenate the body, clarify the mind, open the heart, and support the development of the soul. This is only achieved through understanding and working with the chemical, energetic, and spiritual properties of the plants. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. He lives on a homestead in the foothills of Mt. Baker Washington with his wife Whitney where he teaches, consults clients, and prepares spagyric herbal medicines.    ———————————— WANT TO FEATURE US ON YOUR PODCAST? ———————————— If you'd like to interview Sajah or Whitney to be on your podcast, click here to fill out an interview request form.

A Special Bonus EpisodeI'm so grateful to share this bonus episode featuring a special conversation I had last year with my dear friend Mark Jensen. It's a rare and beautiful exchange that touches on healing, grief, and a mystical connection to the Earth—an invitation to listen and remember what truly matters. In today's episode, I'm joined by Mark Jensen, a seasoned practitioner in the healing arts with 40+ years of experience in vitalistic principled chiropractic, cranial work, myofascial release, plant medicines, Qi Gong and Dao Yin classes, somatic/movement teachings, and Earth-based practices that support a more embodied, connected and healthy life. He operates a private practice, teaches for nonprofits, and leads community classes and ceremonies.Mark's profound understanding and ability to blend mystical visions with scientific study make this conversation a treasure trove of wisdom and inspiration. Mark shares insights from decades of practice in the healing arts, including his conceptualization of the "circle of visions" and how attentional intimacy and communion with life's intelligence can lead to profound healing. We delve into his deep connection with nature, the power of grief, and transformative experiences in his own healing journey. He also touches on the significance of holding space for joy amidst ecological and societal challenges.Episode HighlightsThe Power of Grief: Mark emphasizes embracing grief as a path to deeper love and soul connection.Ecological Despair and Healing: Insights on navigating ecological despair and finding healing through a greater understanding of the earth's intelligence.Visions and Spiritual Experiences: Mark shares transformative visions and spiritual encounters that have shaped his practice.Holding Dichotomy and Paradox: The importance of balancing the celebration of beauty with the acknowledgment of despair.Connection with Nature: Mark discusses his deep bond with nature and how it has guided and healed him throughout his life. The Role of Fascia in Healing: Insights into how fascia, the body's connective tissue, plays a crucial role in sensing and responding to the world.Community and Shared Grief: Community and shared experiences in processing grief and preventing despair.Mark Jensen“My journey began in Northern Minnesota and has carried me across landscapes, traditions, and thresholds of healing. Though trained in college and graduate school, my true education came from life itself—from births and deaths I was honored to attend, from those who entrusted me with their bodies, and from teachers across disciplines like Osteopathy, Daoism, Chinese Medicine, Herbalism, Deep Ecology, and land-based ceremony. The land has been my greatest teacher—from the plains of Oklahoma to the mountains of New Mexico, and now, back home to the shores of Gichigami (Lake Superior).I live in Duluth, Minnesota with my wife, artist Riha Rothberg, and our cat Gus. I continue to teach healthcare practitioners and maintain a private healing practice rooted in presence, ecology, and transformation.”Resource LinksLearn more about Mark and how to engage in his offerings, courses, and events at marksjensendc.comSubscribe to The Guest House on Substack for regular essays, podcast episodes, and more.Shawnparell.com - Check out Shawn's website to sign up for 5 free meditations, join Shawn's email list for monthly field notes and music alchemy, and learn more about her work and upcoming events.Stay connected with Shawn on Instagram @ShawnParell for live weekly meditations and prompts for practice. Welcome to this episode of the Midwife Podcast. Today I am joined by Mieko Aoki, a practitioner in the beautiful island of Kauai, where she complements birthwork herbalism & Mayan Abdominal Massage, aligning the mind and the body with nature. Mieko talks about journey work , the path of sitting, sensing and responding. As midwives, we have a responsibility of being perceptive and attuned to the unspoken things that mean so much when we are vulnerable. Listening to what nature is telling us and entering a space of connection with ourselves, mothers and the beyond. A recurring topic in our conversation was the power of connection. Mieko was taught by a Mayan woman from San Ignacio Belize. And reflects how the same medicine is present in different practices from different cultures like acupuncture, mayan abdominal massage and herbalism. Nature is wise, and so are we as women, grab a cup of tea and join us.

In our fifth installment in this series, we address the facts & fictions about ginkgo, guarana, and maca supplements in commerce! These were #13, 14, and 15 on the top-selling herbs list for 2023 (the most recent data). This series is all about sharing an herbalist's understanding of herbs very popular as commercial supplements and other mass-market products. We want to share perspectives of both traditional and contemporary herbal practice, so people can understand these are “good for” more than just what's on their labels. It's too easy for herbs to be boxed in to smaller and smaller ranges of application when they're commercialized. This is an antidote to that movement! For practicing herbalists & clinicians, it's very important to know well those herbs which are most commonly consumed. Your clients will ask you about them, or be taking them before they even visit you – so you've got to know what they do! You might be able to give advice about a better remedy, or a compensation for some effect of the plant. This can help your clients just as much as a new recommendation, so don't neglect it.If you're new to herbalism, this can also serve as an inoculation against “herban legends” and misinformation – which is rampant on today's internet.13. Inspired by my journey through Old Europe and the work of archeomythologist Marija Gimbutas, I explore goddess-worshiping cultures and the rich symbolism they left behind—like the snake, the egg, and sacred water—as guides for understanding cycles of life, death, fertility, rest, and regeneration. But this isn't just a look at ancient history. I share practical, grounded ways to embody the goddess in your daily life today—through community care, seasonal and cyclical living, everyday rituals, and even the herbal allies I keep close (sometimes literally in my pockets!). If you're longing to reconnect with the Earth, slow down, and live in a more regenerative rhythm, this episode is an invitation to awaken the goddess within and bring her spirit into the heart of your modern life.

Keywords: Poison Path, dark herbalism, spiritual allies, ego death.   00:36 - Coby Michael Joins the Show Coby expresses excitement for the discussion, setting the stage for a deep dive into occult herbalism.   01:22 - The Poison Path as a Mirror Coby explains how "poison" is a broad, misunderstood term, shaped by human perceptions over centuries. Poison plants reflect our shadow selves—parts we fear or deny. Key Quote: "It all comes down to dosage, circumstances, and how these plants are employed." SEO Keywords: shadow self, poison plants, occult herbalism.   03:48 - Personal Story: Shadow Work with Poison Plants Coby shares how Saturn-ruled plants (e.g., nightshades) require slow, gradual work, drawing out empowering and shameful shadow aspects. Example: Feeling drawn to their "sinister, badass" vibe revealed his own disempowerment. Takeaway: Poison plants seduce you, then force reflection. Keywords: shadow work, Saturn plants, personal transformation.   06:51 - From Physical Death to Ego Death Coby emphasizes safety: physical death is possible, but the goal is ego death—an alchemical detachment from unhelpful self-aspects. Practical Tips: Start with meditation, topical oils, or flower essences, not ingestion. Keywords: ego death, nightshades, safe plant practices.   08:53 - The Rebirth Experience Rebirth "sucks"—it's raw, stripping away cycles like vampiric relationships, leaving you to relearn life. Worth It? Yes, for genuine transformation. Key Quote: "You're a fresh little entity, navigating the world in a brand new way." Keywords: rebirth, transformation, shadow healing.   10:52 - Poison as Rebellion Coby ties poison to the Promethean archetype—stealing forbidden knowledge against patriarchal oppression. Modern Relevance: A rebellion against submissive societal norms. Keywords: Promethean archetype, poison rebellion, transgressive power.   14:43 - Balancing Balm and Bane on the Crooked Path Poison plants heal as much as they harm; balance them with tonic herbs like rose or chamomile. Challenge: Avoiding depression or malaise from lingering in darkness too long. Personal Insight: Coby's fiery natal chart led to physical depletion without self-care. Keywords: crooked path, balance, tonic herbs.   18:21 - Plant Spirit Communication (Phytonosis) Phytonosis = plant-derived knowledge via images, emotions, or voices (e.g., Belladonna's persona). How-To: Meditate with plants, study their lore, notice recurring thoughts. Keywords: phytonosis, plant spirits, spiritual communication.   20:57 - The Otherness of Poison Poison historically "others" groups (e.g., Jews, women, witches), yet grounds us in the earthly realm. Contrast: Unlike celestial psychedelics, poison plants keep you rooted. Keywords: otherness, poison history, grounding spirituality.   25:22 - Veneficium: Love Potions and Poison Venusian plants blur love and harm (e.g., ancient aphrodisiacs doubling as poisons). Lesson: Self-love trumps all; set boundaries without fear. Keywords: veneficium, love potions, self-love.   31:32 - Practical Tip for Beginners: Foxglove For relationship struggles, Foxglove offers gentle heart healing. How: Use as a flower essence or meditate with its glyph (The Poison Path Herbal). Keywords: foxglove, heart healing, beginner plant practice.   33:32 - Belladonna's Valkyrie Spirit Beyond seduction, Belladonna embodies a feral, martial energy for fighting adversity. Application: Dismantle outdated societal structures. Keywords: Belladonna, warrior spirit, systemic injustice.   36:14 - Yew Tree Self-Sacrifice Inspired by Odin's sacrifice, shed unserving life aspects (e.g., Coby's marriage, pets). Catalyst: A Belladonna-Henbane ceremony sparked his 10-year transformation. Keywords: Yew tree, self-sacrifice, shamanic death.   43:30 - Poison Path vs. Psychedelic Renaissance The psychedelic boom (e.g., Ayahuasca tourism) contrasts with the grounded Poison Path. Contribution: Offers subtle, chthonic alternatives to celestial blasts. Keywords: psychedelic renaissance, Ayahuasca, chthonic plants.   52:18 - Animism and Plant Consciousness Plants have undeniable consciousness, reshaping Coby's empathy for nature. To Skeptics: Science backs it—skepticism is outdated. Keywords: animism, plant consciousness, non-human intelligence.   53:59 - Legacy and Future of the Poison Path Legacy: Empowerment to rethink poison and integrate it personally. Future: A third book, then amplifying collective voices over the next decade. Keywords: Poison Path legacy, empowerment, future evolution.   57:36 - Closing Thoughts & Resources Jason reflects: The Poison Path confronts fear, enabling love. Coby's Website: thepoisonersapothecary.com Social: @PoisonersApothecary on Instagram Keywords: fear vs. love, Coby Michael resources.   Key Takeaways Poison Reflects the Shadow: Plants like Belladonna mirror hidden fears and strengths, pushing you toward integration. Ego Death is the Goal: Safely detach from ego, not destroy it, using gradual practices. Rebellion Fuels Transformation: Poison defies taboos, turning personal poisons into power. Balance is Essential: Pair dark plants with light tonics to avoid burnout. Plants Speak: Through phytonosis, they guide us with subtle wisdom. Grounded Alternative: Unlike the psychedelic hype, the Poison Path roots you in reality.   Resources Mentioned Books: [The Poison Path Grimoire]– Coby's latest work on dark herbalism. In this episode, I explore ancient perspectives on death through the lens of the Goddess—especially as she was honored in Neolithic cultures. We'll journey into the cave as a sacred womb and tomb, examine burial practices, and consider the powerful symbolism of figurines, bees, butterflies, and the 'stiff white lady'—all expressions of transformation and regeneration. These stories remind us that death was once seen not as an end, but as part of a cycle of renewal. I also share the herbal wisdom of lemon balm, a plant long associated with the Goddess and healing rituals, and how we can use it today as an ally in our own times of transition and rebirth.———— MY ONLINE COURSES

Rosemary Gladstar was the very first person I interviewed for this podcast nearly four years ago, and it was truly an honor to be able to have her on the show again. She is such a presence in the world, having brought so much love and wisdom to the herbal community for decades. Rosemary's work has inspired many thousands (at least!) of budding and experienced herbalists, and I am so incredibly grateful for every moment I get to spend with her.Rosemary discussed a variety of topics in this interview, but there was one major thread that wove its way through our conversation: the beauty and power of diversity, whether that's diversity in an ecosystem, in a group of people, or even in the thoughts and ideas that guide us on our journey through the world. She shared about many of the people, places, and plants that have influenced her path, and how sometimes the most challenging of situations have often been her biggest teachers.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What inspired Rosemary to write her new book, The Generosity of Plants – and why she continues to be inspired by its contents► Why Rosemary finds such value in being challenged by different viewpoints► How the art of herbal formulation can be used as a model for community and collaboration among people► Why connection, relationship, love, and adventure make such strong medicine► and so much more…For those of you who don't know her, Rosemary Gladstar has been practicing, living, learning, teaching and writing about herbs for over 45 years. She's the author of 13 books, including her latest book, The Generosity of Plants. She's also the author and director of the popular home study course, The Science and Art of Herbalism. In 2018, Rosemary was awarded an honorary doctorate for her life work from the National University of Naturopathic Medicine. Have you ever wondered how to understand plants on a deeper level, beyond “This herb is good for that thing?” If so, you won't want to skip this post!   I am excited to be joined today by my colleague, friend, and teacher, Pam Montgomery. Pam is an herbalist, author, international teacher, earth elder, and new paradigm thinker who passionately embraces her role as a spokesperson for the green beings. She has investigated plants and their intelligent spiritual nature for over three decades.   Pam is the author of Co-Creating with Nature: Healing the Wound of Separation and the highly acclaimed Plant Spirit Healing: A Guide to Working With Plant Consciousness. She teaches internationally and virtually on plant initiations, spiritual ecology, and co-creative partnership with nature. Pam founded the Organization of Nature Evolutionaries (ONE) and served as a founding board member of the United Plant Savers.   I first met Pam when I was in my early twenties, and she has been an instrumental teacher for me on my plant path, providing valuable guidance, knowledge, and wisdom about plants. I'm happy to share her wisdom with you.   Here's what you'll learn from our conversation: What does being in a co-creative partnership with nature mean, and how do we get into it? How do we differentiate between a plant communicating with us vs. our own thoughts? What are plant initiations, and what can we learn from them?
