The first trimester… where the only thing growing faster than your baby is your list of symptoms. From constant nausea to sore boobs, exhaustion that hits like a truck, and cravings (or complete food aversions)—early pregnancy is no joke.In this episode of Barely Balanced, we're talking all things first trimester from a clinical and personal perspective:
I am 10 months postpartum so what a perfect time to catch up on old updates!! Here is my 3rd trimester episode- recorded a year ago.
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey...and can also cause many drastic changes that can be difficult, physically and emotionally. In this episode, we talk about the last phase of the pregnancy through patient stories, physical challenges, self-image issues, how to alleviate symptoms, reframing the “downs” with the “ups”, and so much more. I am joined with my co-host and good friend, Touseef Mirza.

In today's episode, I'm sharing my third-trimester update, including how my insulin sensitivity has shifted during this time and the steps I'm taking to prepare for the hospital, labor, and delivery.I've chosen to open up about my birth plan because, whether you share similar preferences or have a completely different approach, advocacy is such an important part of the process. I'll talk about how I've been navigating conversations with my high-risk team and the hospital staff to stay aligned with my vision, even when their suggestions differ from my plan.Birth plans are deeply personal, and I know not everyone will agree with all of my thoughts. But I believe it's worth sharing my journey openly, especially when it comes to induction and other big decisions. My hope is that this episode inspires you to trust your body, advocate for what feels right, and feel empowered in your own decisions—whatever they may be.Time Stamps: 04:12 My Blood Sugar Management in 3rd Trimester - why it's been easier11:40 My Birth Plan, Intuition, and to Induce or Not25:44 Advocating for Your Birth Choices31:27 Three Notes from My Birth Plan and ReflectionsWhat to do now:Follow me @lauren_bongiorno and @riselyhealth on Instagram to stay in the loop when new episodes drop.Preparing for pregnancy in 2025? Chapter 1:Summary of The Happiest Baby On The Block"The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp is a parenting guide that focuses on techniques to soothe fussy babies and promote better sleep. Karp introduces the concept of the "4th Trimester," arguing that newborns are born three months too early and need strategies similar to those found in the womb for optimal comfort and development.Key concepts from the book include:1. The Five S's: Karp outlines five techniques designed to calm crying babies:- Swaddling: Wrapping the baby snugly in a blanket to mimic the womb's coziness.- Side or Stomach Position: Holding the baby on their side or stomach (never laying them down in this position) to help calm them.- Shushing: Making a shushing sound that simulates the noises heard in the womb.- Swinging: Gently rocking or swinging the baby to mimic the movements they experienced before birth.- Sucking: Allowing the baby to suck on their thumb, a pacifier, or a bottle to self-soothe.2. Understanding Crying: Karp helps parents understand the reasons behind a baby's crying and provides reassurance that it is a normal part of infancy. He emphasizes that most babies cry, especially during the first three months.3. Creating a Calming Environment: The book suggests creating a soothing atmosphere for the baby, which includes dim lighting and soft music or white noise to recreate a womb-like environment.4. The Importance of Parental Confidence: Karp encourages parents to feel empowered and confident in their abilities to soothe their baby, which in turn reduces their frustration and enhances the parenting experience.Overall, "The Happiest Baby on the Block" aims to equip parents with practical tools to help make the early months of parenting more manageable and enjoyable, leading to happier babies and less stressed parents.Chapter 2:The Theme of The Happiest Baby On The Block"The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp is a parenting guide that focuses on techniques to soothe and calm fussy babies. While the book is not a narrative fiction with traditional plot points, characters, and themes, it does present significant ideas and strategies that can be viewed as key components in the context of parenting and child development. Here are some of the essential elements of the book: Key Points1. The 5 S's Technique:- Dr. Karp introduces a series of five techniques aimed at calming newborns: - Swaddling: Wrapping the baby tightly in a blanket to provide a sense of security.- Side or Stomach Position: Holding babies on their sides or stomachs (while supervising) to mimic how they were positioned in the womb.- Shushing: Making a sound similar to the whooshing noise they heard in the womb to soothe them.- Swinging: Gentle swinging or rocking to replicate the gentle movements they experienced before birth.- Sucking: Offering a pacifier or encouraging suckling to comfort the baby.2. The “Fourth Trimester” Concept:- Karp discusses the idea of the "fourth trimester" — the first three months after birth — during which infants are adjusting to life outside the womb. He highlights that this period is critical for both the baby's emotional and physical development.3. Understanding Infant Crying:- The author elaborates on the reasons why babies cry and provides insights into different types of cries and what they might signify. Understanding these cries can help parents respond more effectively to their baby's needs.4. The Role of the Parent:- Karp emphasizes the importance of establishing a nurturing environment for the baby. He discusses how caregivers can build secure attachments through responsive caregiving and the benefits of involving both parents in baby care. Character Development (In...

STRONG MAMA PODCAST - Health and fitness for a stronger pregnancy, birth and postpartum recovery
Is pain in pregnancy "normal?" As your body rapidly grows and changes in pregnancy, pressure is put on different areas of the body and new hormones cause instability. This is a cocktail for back pain, pelvic pain, and injuries if we're not being proactive. The good news? Exercise can help manage and even prevent some of them from happening. If you want to have a comfortable, active pregnancy, I'm going to share with you exactly how to do that so you don't wind up with debilitating back or pelvic pain later in pregnancy. On part two of our 4th-trimester abortion series, we continue responding to pro-abortion politicians' claims that late-term abortion and infanticide simply don't happen. That's right. Not only do late-term abortions and infanticide take place, but we needed TWO entire episodes to document the evidence.

On this week's episode of The 40 Days for Life Podcast, we discuss fourth-trimester abortion, which--. Wait, what? Fourth-trimester abortions? There are only three trimesters of pregnancy. True. But infanticide is increasingly in vogue among abortion supporters. Pro-abortion politicians claim infanticide doesn't exist, so we'll discuss the what, why, where, and who of so-called fourth-trimester abortions.
Join me for an inspiring conversation with Lauren Smith Brody, author and founder of The Fifth Trimester, as we explore the realities and challenges of being a working parent. In this episode we discuss: - The one thing that Lauren has observed to most galvanize people to stand up for their needs and their family's needs in the workplace. - Dr. Sarah shares the oh-so-relatable working-mom struggle that led her to be 8 months pregnant, crying alone in a coffee shop. - How to step back and identify if the “rules” aren't working for you and how you can start to feel more empowered to break them (even when it's hard!) - A simple strategy for making it easier for your work to say yes to your requests (Hint: The first step is understanding why it's an economically good decision for your boss to make the accommodations you're requesting.) - What a small business owner can do to support working parents when they don't necessarily have the financial resources to do all the big-ticket items they wish they could. - How employers can help their teams “resentment-proof” their career and their lives with solutions for the future. Tune in for a conversation packed with insights on how to empower working moms and transform workplace culture!
