Da en influensaepidemi brøt ut i Paris i 1889 flyttet den norske kunstneren Edvard Munch ut til forstaden Saint-Cloud. På jakt etter et kunstnerisk prosjekt skrev han korte minnetekster, blant annet om sin søster Sofies død mange år tidligere: «Hun så med sine store øine ind i lampen – det var så trist.» Scenen med det døende barnet var da godt kjent fra Munchs gjennombrudds-maleri Det syke barn fra 1886. He has used the methodology of micro-history to study the first meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society in 1947, including 'juicy' details. We discuss Ola's thesis of the double movement: neoliberalism as response to both planning and the old ideal of laissez-faire. But the conversation turns much broader about the international character of neoliberalism, the uses and abuses of the term, as well as its contemporary relevance. And we discuss other recent literature on neoliberalism including that of Quinn Slobodian and Peter Boettke. Heng sosialdemokratiets tilbakegang saman med det liberale hegemoniet? Er det slik at liberalismen har tatt sosialdemokratiet som gissel og gjort det kraftlaust, ved at rommet for kollektiv handling og kollektive rørsler er innsnevra? Var "knefallet" for liberalismen frå Tony Blair og andre sosialdemokratiske leiarar på 1990-talet eit fatalt feilgrep? Eller var det tvert om ei heilt nødvendig tilpassing til eit samfunn dominert av verdiane og interessene til den velberga middelklassen? Dersom liberalismen er den ramma som eit moderne parti må verka innanfor dersom det i det heile skal vera relevant, korleis skal sosialdemokratiet i så fall gjera ein forskjell? Med boka «Ingen mennesker er født frie» utfordra Mímir Kristjansson, Oscar Dybedahl, Sigurd Hverven og Ola Innset til kritisk debatt om liberalismen, den dominerande ideologien i vestlege samfunn sidan krigen. Som debatten etter boka viste, vil svaret på desse spørsmåla vil langt på veg vera avhengig av korleis ein definerer liberalisme, i snever økonomisk forstand eller som ein politisk fridomstradisjon med røter i den franske revolusjonen. Men Mímir Kristjansson vil nok visa at det likevel er nok å diskutera når han laurdag 3. februar tar turen tilbake til heimbyen.

Det er ikke til å stikke under en stol at økonomer innehar en stor del av maktposisjonene verden over, og økonomiske argumenter vinner gjennomgående frem i samfunnsdebatten. Med dette som utgangspunkt er det naturlig å anta at dagens økonomiutdanning gir et bredt innblikk i samfunnsvitenskapelige teorier og strukturer. Samtidig blir økonomiutdanninger verden over kritisert for å være ensrettede, og for ikke å ta innover seg den økonomiske virkeligheten. Kritikken kommer blant annet fra alternative økonomer og den nyoppstartede studentbevegelsen Rethinking Economics. Kritikerne etterlyser et større mangfold av økonomiske teorier, samt en anerkjennelse av begrensningene til de modellene som i dag læres bort.

Trenger venstresida både SV og Rødt? Eller vil både medlemmer og velgere få mer igjen fra et nytt og samlende parti? SV går fram, men kan i verste fall havne under sperregrensa ved høstens valg. Også i SV er det uenighet innad om strategien. Kan samarbeid gi den radikale venstresida et oppsving også i Norge? Eller vil en sammenslåingsprosess bli mye skrik og lite ull? Kan kampen for en demokratisk sosialisme bli en bred folkebevegelse hvis to såpass små partier insisterer på å fortsette som politiske konkurrenter? I de fleste andre fag er det vanlig med ulike teoretiske innfallsvinkler, men i økonomifaget læres kun én teori om virkeligheten bort: nyklassisk økonomisk teori.
