Michael Shaikh's The Last Sweet Bite is filled with recipes, but it's also a document that reflects the way conflict alters cuisine. The project, which blends travel writing, memoir and the traditional cookbook structure, profiles six regions impacted by war, violence and genocide. In today's episode, Shaikh joins NPR's Leila Fadel for a conversation that touches on how he went from covering human rights abuses in conflict zones to creating this non-traditional cookbook. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Let's be honest. Most of us want to grow in our Deen — but we keep putting off studying Islam. Or worse, we think watching videos, googling fatwas, and reading a few posts online is enough. But the reality is: You were created to know Allah. And that doesn't happen by scrolling or skimming — it happens through seeking knowledge the right way. In this raw and important reminder, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan lays it all out: - Why studying Islam isn't just for scholars — it's for you - How shyness and arrogance keep Muslims stuck in ignorance - Why some ignorance won't be excused on the Day of Judgement - The danger of learning without teachers, tarbiyah, or proper understanding - And what true Islamic learning looked like at the time of the Prophet ﷺ If you've ever said, “I want to learn properly, I just don't know where to start…” Start here. You try to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah—then you're told you're rigid. You quote the Salaf—then you're labelled a Wahhabi. And why do others accuse you of being extreme—for simply following what the Salaf believed? This lecture tackles these tensions head-on—through the words of early and authentic voices of Ahl al-Hadith. Study the book I'tiqad A'immah al-Hadith by Imam Abu Bakr al-Ismaʿili (d. 371H). With Shaikh Dr. Asim Al-Qaryooti, we explore how the true Imams of the Sunnah understood and lived their creed. The book dismantles many modern doubts and deviations by clearly stating what the Salaf believed regarding: - Allah's Names and Attributes - The authority of authentic Hadith in Aqeedah—even if it's Aahaad - Rejecting blind following when it clashes with the Qur'an and Sunnah - Avoiding philosophy, kalam, and speculative theology, and returning to the clear guidance of revelation - True loyalty to the Imams—by following their principles, not their mistakes This is the creed that stood the test of time. A creed based on the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the understanding of the first three generations. If you've ever struggled with the tension between following the evidence and adopting Taqleed… if you've been told that affirming Allah's Attributes means you're anthropomorphising… or if you want to know what the scholars of Hadith actually believed—this is the session to watch. Clear. Grounded. Unapologetic. This is the Aqeedah of Ahl al-Hadith. You spent a month in worship—will one day undo it all? Eid is a time of joy, celebration, and gratitude. But not all forms of celebration are the same. Some are rooted in the Sunnah—marked by remembrance, family ties, and takbeer. Others cross boundaries—wrapped in trends, music, and excuses made in the name of “fun.” Can women sing? Are instruments allowed? What kind of joy did the Prophet ﷺ actually permit? In this powerful reminder, Shaikh Dr. Asim Al-Qaryooti explores the spirit of Eid as taught by the Prophet ﷺ and practised by the Salaf—with balance, clarity, and purpose. So what will you do? Hold firmly to the taqwa you built in Ramadan and distance yourself from disobedience— or use isolated scholarly statements, taken out of context, to overlook clear prohibitions from the Qur'an and Sunnah and justify sin in the name of Eid? Before you celebrate, pause and reflect—what will your Eid say about your Ramadan? How closely does your prayer reflect the way the Prophet ﷺ prayed? Most people learn Salah by imitation—rarely by study. But aligning your prayer with the Sunnah isn't optional. It's a matter of following the Messenger ﷺ as we were commanded. In this lecture, Ustadh Abdulrahman Hassan explores Mukhtasar Sifah Salah an-Nabi ﷺ—the summarised work of Shaykh al-Albani, drawn from authentic narrations that capture the Prophet's ﷺ prayer in exact detail. Clear. Concise. Evidence-based. It's more than a guide—it's your chance to correct and perfect your prayer, step by step. Host Abdullah Shetty ke saath, yeh series un baaton par roshni daalti hai jo logon ke dil aur dimaag mein hoti hain, magar aksar koi sawal nahi karta. Har episode mein, hum Ulama se raahnumai lete hain, taake Deen ki samajh ko behtar banaya ja sake aur mushkil aur nazuk topics ko Qur'an aur Sunnah ki roshni mein samjha ja sake. Koi sawal chhota nahi, koi baat bekaar nahi – kyunki kabhi kabhi sabse zaroori guftagu khamoshi ke peechey chhupi hoti hai. #islamic #islamicvideo #deeneislam #deen #deenkibaatein

They are thought to be descendants of Hindu warriors who converted to Islam and adopted the name Shaikh to signify their faith. Despite their large population of over 134 million, less than 0.1% are Christians, and an estimated 2,685 workers are needed to reach them with the Gospel. Pray for Shaikh families to experience God's blessings through dreams, miracles, and the power of Scripture in their homes. Most of the neurons comprising the midbrain reticular formation lie dorsal and lateral to the red nuclei. Complex interactions between multiple neurotransmitters modulate the action of the reticular activating system with both cholinergic and adrenergic neurotransmission having key roles. The reticular activating system's fundamental role is regulating arousal and sleep−wake transitions. The ascending reticular activating system projects to the intralaminar nuclei of the thalami, which projects diffusely to the cerebral cortex. The ascending projections of the reticular activating system enhance the attentive state of the cortex and facilitate conscious perception of sensory stimuli. Additionally, the collective role of the brainstem reticular formation is to regulate autonomic function, muscle reflexes, and tone.' B.L. Walter, A.G. Shaikh, in Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences (Second Edition), 2014 - note from Robbie: So it is part of the brain, but only a small part of it is about attention/conscious perception.
