How can we address the problem of violence against the poor? International Justice Mission exists to answer this question with protecting and rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts. In this episode, International Justice Mission's founder and CEO, Gary Haugen, joins Mark Labberton to reflect on almost three decades of IJM's fight against violence and slavery worldwide—and the spiritual formation that sustains it. Haugen shares the origins of IJM in response to systemic violence against the poor, the evolution from individual rescues to transforming justice systems, and the remarkable rise of survivor leaders transforming their own nations. Together they reflect on courage, joy, and faith amid immense risk—bearing witness to God's power to bring justice and healing through ordinary people. Episode Highlights “Protecting the poor from violence is God's weight, but it's our work, and we're gonna seek to do it Jesus's way.” ”In this era, I just think what the world is aching to see is the followers of Jesus who have a incandescent freedom from fear and a life-giving joy.” “Most of this violence will go away if government does just even a decent job of enforcing the law.” “Our first commitment is to help each other become more like Jesus—and from that strength, to do justice.” “The greatest miracle of IJM is not only the results—it's the freedom from fear and the joy with which they've done it.” “God saw them in their darkness, and they now testify to the goodness of an almighty God who loved them.” Helpful Links and Resources International Justice Mission – https://www.ijm.org Gary Haugen, The Locust Effect: Why the End of Poverty Requires the End of Violence – https://www.amazon.com/Locust-Effect-Poverty-Requires-Violence/dp/0199937877 Gary Haugen, Just Courage: God's Great Expedition for the Restless Christian – https://www.amazon.com/Just-Courage-Expedition-Restless-Christian-ebook/dp/B001PSEQR4 Riverside Church Sermon by Martin Luther King Jr., “Beyond Vietnam” — https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/beyond-vietnam William Lloyd Garrison biography – https://www.britannica.com/biography/William-Lloyd-Garrison Rwanda Genocide Investigation (UN Historical Overview) – https://www.un.org/en/preventgenocide/rwanda About Gary Haugen Gary Haugen is the founder and CEO of International Justice Mission (IJM), the world's largest international anti-slavery organization. What does real loyalty look like in a culture of self-preservation and conditional commitment? In this message, Pastor Adam Haugen exposes the lies that keep us divided—“look out for number one” and “I can't be loyal if you're not loyal to me”—and reveals the truth of God's hesed love: steadfast, covenant faithfulness that never quits. Discover how to reflect God's loyal love in your marriage, friendships, work, and church, proving faithfulness not by words but by action.
In a world obsessed with showing off, Pastor Adam Haugen reminds us that modesty isn't about appearance — it's about the heart. True modesty keeps honor in the right place, directing glory to God rather than ourselves. Learn how to flex less, honor more, and walk humbly with Him.
This week at Glad Tidings Church, we conclude our Legacy series with a powerful reminder that God is always working—upstream and down the road. Drawing from Joshua 3–4 and Habakkuk 2:3, Pastor Adam Haugen unpacks what it means to wait on God when the river feels raging, the miracle seems delayed, and doubts start to rise.Through stories of Joshua's faith at the Jordan River, the hidden clay that became the Temple's foundation centuries later, and the legacy of Glad Tidings itself, we see how obedience today can shape worship and transformation for generations to come.If you've ever wrestled with God's timing, questioned His silence, or wondered if your faith really matters, this message will encourage you: while you're waiting, God is working—upstream in ways you cannot see, and down the road in ways you cannot yet imagine.
In part three of our Legacy series, Pastor Adam Haugen reminds us that leaving a legacy means more than having a mentor—it also means investing in someone else. Just as Moses poured into Joshua, we are called to raise up the next generation, even while facing our own battles. This message challenges us to fight for others in prayer, pursue God personally, and be strong and courageous in the face of opposition. Legacy isn't just about what we receive—it's about who we invest in.

In this week's message, We All Need a Jethro, Pastor Adam explores the vital role of mentors in our lives. Just as Jethro guided Moses with wisdom, encouragement, and sound advice, we too need people who will listen, challenge, and speak truth into us.Legacy isn't built alone. It grows when we allow others to invest in us, helping us walk faithfully and make better decisions. This message will inspire you to seek out the voices God has placed around you so that your life and influence can extend beyond yourself.
What kind of legacy are you leaving behind? Most of us would say we want our families and the people we love to experience joy and fulfillment. But if happiness is the goal, it's a shaky plan—because what makes one person happy can leave another empty. In this opening message of our Legacy series, Pastor Adam shows us from Scripture that God calls us to something greater. Through the life of Moses, we discover that leaving a spiritual legacy begins with recognizing God's rescue, stepping into His call to serve others, and submitting to His plan for our lives.Instead of chasing temporary happiness, learn how to live a story worth telling—one marked by faith, obedience, and impact that extends beyond yourself and points others to Jesus. Our Website: https://gladtidings.org/leanderConnect with us: https://gladtidings.org/connectRequest Prayer: https://gladtidings.org/prayerGive Online: https://gladtidings.org/give

Prayer isn't just something we do—it's the heartbeat of our relationship with God. But too often, we treat prayer like a wish list, a spare tire, or a spiritual checklist. In this message, Pastor Adam Haugen unpacks what prayer is not, why it matters, and how it aligns our hearts to God's will instead of trying to bend Him to ours. With humor, personal stories, and biblical truth, you'll discover how to make prayer a regular, life-giving rhythm—and why surrender is the key to hearing from God.
We were made to worship. But in the absence of the holy, we often chase the hype—filling our lives with things that can't truly satisfy. In this message, Pastor Adam Haugen challenges us to see worship not as a song we sing, but as a sacrifice we live. In the final message of the Spiritual Ops series, Pastor Adam Haugen teaches from Ephesians 6 on how to fight life's daily spiritual battles. Pastor Adam Haugen closes the Jonah series reminding us: it's easy to do God's work without His heart. Jonah 4 shows how God's grace can offend when we cling to comfort over calling. The story ends unresolved, but God's mercy never stops. Jesus, greater than Jonah (Matthew 12:41), is proof that God chases us down with compassion and second chances.#Jonah #GladTidings #Grace #SecondChances #PastorAdamHaugen
Gary Haugen has seen the darkest things imaginable. He's spent decades fighting human traffickers, corrupt governments, and mobs that enslave men, women, and children to sell them for sex and profit. But he's not one bit cynical. As president of International Justice Mission, Haugen has worked to abolish modern-day slavery and to put the bad guys in jail while building the kind of institutions that ensure people are never treated that way again. In this episode, Russell and Haugen discuss the objection that “justice issues” distract from the gospel. They also talk about how people can know whether God is calling them to some area of justice and mercy and about how those who are doing this kind of work can keep from burnout or despair. Haugen quoted from C. S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters: “Despair is a greater sin than any of the sins which provoke it.” He talks about how he learned from the writings of Dallas Willard and others the kinds of spiritual disciplines he needs to stay grounded and hopeful. The two also talk about going to church 13 times a week, the complex psychology of an oppressor, the power of art and music to move us to action, practical steps toward seeking justice, and of course, Wendell Berry. What does it look like to run with God instead of from Him? In Jonah 3, we discover a powerful truth: our God is a God of second chances. After running the opposite direction, Jonah finally obeys—and God reminds us that our past doesn't disqualify us from His purpose. Pastor Adam shares how God's mercy meets us in our mess, and how even delayed obedience can lead to life-changing impact when we say yes to God's call.

On the 126th episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I'm delighted to welcome our guest, Geneen Marie Haugen, PhD. Geneen grew up a little wild, with a run amok imagination, and has lived at the wild edge for most of her life. Once upon a time, she was a whitewater river guide and a tipi dweller who loved knowing that only thin canvas separated her from the the world. In her wild wanderings, she's been amazed to have had dozens or maybe hundreds of close encounters with creatures such as moose, elk, grizzlies, wolves, black bears, cougars, bison, and more. For her, the sulpher-scented hot springs of Yellowstone smell like home. A content creator and guide to the intertwined mysteries of nature and psyche with the Animas Valley Institute, she has been on the faculty of the Esalen Institute and Schumacher College. Her writing has appeared in Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth; Thomas Berry: Dreamer of the Earth; Parabola; Kosmos Journal; Ecopsychology; The Artist's Field Guide to Yellowstone, and many others. She believes in the world-shifting potential of the human imagination allied with the planetary psyche. In this glorious conversation, we explore the nature of reality and the role of imagination in shaping it. We discuss the current suppression of imagination, the vast possibilities that remain, and how imagination has profoundly influenced Geneen's life. What do you do when you've been running from God—and you finally hit rock bottom? In part two of our series through the book of Jonah, Pastor Adam Haugen explores Jonah's turning point in the belly of the fish—a moment of desperation that led to heartfelt prayer and a renewed sense of purpose. Through humor, raw honesty, and powerful biblical truth, we're reminded: it's never too late to pray, and God is always working—sometimes even in the mess.If you've ever felt like you were too far gone or too stuck to hear God's voice, this message will encourage you to stop running from God and start running to Him. Because even in the storm, even in the struggle, God's grace is closer than you think.
What do you do when God asks you to do something you don't want to do?In this first message of our new series through the book of Jonah, we see the story of a prophet who hears God clearly—but chooses to run. Jonah's resistance isn't rooted in fear—it's rooted in pride, bitterness, and a clash of values. And if we're honest, many of us can relate.Pastor Adam walks us through Jonah chapter 1 and unpacks what happens when we run from God: life unravels, worship becomes hollow, and others can even get caught in our storm. But the good news? God's grace always runs faster than we do.This message will challenge your comfort, expose hidden compromise, and call you back to full obedience to the voice of God.
What if the work is the reward? What if the prize is in the process? And what if—right in the middle of the mundane—you could actually be grateful in the grind? On this special weekend, as we celebrate graduates and honor those who gave their lives for our freedom, Pastor Adam wraps up the Come Home series by challenging the “when/then” mindset so many of us live with: “When I get there, thenI'll be fulfilled.” But what if God is calling us to live with purpose right where we are?Drawing from Paul's words in 1 Corinthians, this message reminds us that the goal isn't just personal gratification, but glorifying God in whatever we do. Whether you're chasing dreams, folding laundry, or fighting discouragement, this message will help you reframe your everyday moments with meaning and purpose.Because when you live for the glory of God—every diaper changed, every bill paid, every step taken—is on purpose.

In this riveting episode of So There I Was, we sit down with John “Apache 2-3” Haugen, a Vietnam-era Army aviator with stories that span from the draft line in 1968 to combat flying in the Mekong Delta. John shares how he dodged a ground-pounder fate by heading to Officer Candidate School, ultimately flying slicks and accumulating over 900 hours of combat flight time. With humor, humility, and gripping detail, he recounts narrow escapes, night missions, forced landings, and his close call in a mangrove swamp that led to a surreal “third man” experience. From learning in OH-23s and flying Hueys to coordinating strikes with Cobras and Puff the Magic Dragon, John's stories highlight the courage, camaraderie, and absurdities of combat aviation in Vietnam. Bonus tales include bar tabs in Manhattan, unexpected rat-kebabs, and the elusive “Hawk's” little black book. This is an episode packed with history, grit, and a whole lot of heart!

In this message from Ephesians 4, Pastor Adam Haugen walks us through the trap of unforgiveness and the freedom that forgiveness brings. With powerful stories, practical tools, and a raw, honest look at personal wounds, this message helps us see that forgiveness isn't forgetting, approving, or even trusting—it's choosing to release, because Christ released us. You may not feel ready to forgive, but through Jesus, healing is possible.Key Verse: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32Ready to be free? This message might be the step your heart has been waiting for.

Drawing from Ephesians 5, he reminds us that parenting starts not with fixing our kids, but by shaping our own hearts.Learn why your identity as a child of God matters more than your parenting method, how your kids mirror what they seemore than what you say, and why consistent, kind correction can transform mistakes into masterpieces. Whether you're raising toddlers, teens, or adult children—or just want to support the next generation—this message is filled with practical wisdom and spiritual encouragement. It's not about raising "good kids"... it's about raising godly adults.
