Hi everyone, we're back with Debbie Clemens who is with the Outreach Coordinator for Orangutan Outreach. In this episode we talk all about palm oil and its effects. The sourcing of palm oil causes conflict because it has been produced illegally or under conditions associated with labor or human rights violations, ongoing destruction of rainforests, or expansion on carbon-rich peatlands. One of the most pressing concerns associated with Palm Oil is its environmental impact. The expansion of palm oil plantations has been linked to deforestation, habitat destruction, and biodiversity loss. In many cases, pristine rainforests are cleared to make way for these plantations, leading to the loss of critical habitat for endangered species like orangutans, tigers, and rhinoceroses. Deforestation also contributes to climate change by releasing stored carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. With Debbie we talk about what palm oil is, where you can commonly find it, the ethics around it, and more. In this episode I continue my conversation with Debbie Clemens who is the Outreach Coordinator for Orangutan Outreach. We talk about the behind the scenes work that goes into making field work possible for these creatures. Tune in for the last episode of the series in two weeks. Debbie Clemens is the Outreach Coordinator for Orangutan Outreach. They are a US based charity that focuses on raising awareness and raising funds for their partners in Indonesia. They are personally not doing the orangutan rescue and rehabilitation work themselves, but are supporting those who are. Mankind may be one of the orangutans' closest relatives but humans are also the greatest threat to the orangutans' survival. Clear cutting, forest fires and hunting are reducing orangutan numbers to alarmingly low levels. Never before has their very existence been threatened so severely. Orangutans used to live in many different parts of Southeast Asia, but the places where they can thrive and find food are quickly vanishing. In Borneo and Sumatra, their last remaining homes, large parts of the old growth rainforest are gone, ripped up for farmland, palm oil plantations and urban development. And the precious little forest that is left is disappearing rapidly as palm oil companies continue to illegally clearcut enormous areas of forest. With Debbie we talk about the behind the scenes work that goes into making field work possible for these creatures. Although we ultimately talk about how saving orangutans is actually saving ourselves. This is a three part series so - look out for the next episodes in the coming weeks. In this episode, I had a fascinating conversation with Rich Zimmerman, the Executive Director of Orangutan Outreach, whose mission is to save critically endangered orangutans and protect their rainforest home. Rich's unconditional love for orangutans stretches back to his childhood growing up in southern California, and after a trip to Indonesia in 2006 he felt deep in his heart that he had to do something to protect these animals. Especially after hearing that six football-sized fields of rainforest a minute were being destroyed just for oil palm consumption. Using his experience from working at UNICEF in NYC and several orangutan conservation organisations, he has helped save the lives of thousands of orangutans through is many outreach programs across Indonesia. This is one inspiring heartfelt story, you’ll either want to adopt one of their orangutans or go do your own bit of good in the animal world. Gina Abudi (@GinaAbudi on twitter) returns to talk with host Craig Price about positive organizational change. Change is hard, it can be scary for some and automatically rejected by others. Thankfully, Gina has written a new book Implementing Positive Organizational Change: A Strategic Project Management Approach to guide companies through change and create a culture where change is not only expected but embraced. The two discuss engaging employees, creating stakeholder support committees and Gina's new undertaking as a speaker. From the book: In today's increasingly competitive global marketplace, organizations that do not regularly undertake change initiatives will find it difficult, if not impossible, to continue to be successful long term. This guide explains how to develop a continuous improvement culture of change that will be perceived by employees as a valuable opportunity instead of something negative to worry about and resist. It outlines a strategic project management approach for ensuring successful implementation and desired results, and includes mini case studies, tips, and practical examples. Orangutan Outreach collaborates with many partners including the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF), International Animal rescue (IAR), the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) and the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC). Orangutan Outreach has been able to successfully build a global grassroots network and help foster awareness of the plight of orangutans among people from every walk of life. Richard Zimmerman of Orangutan Outreach (@redapes on twitter) talks with host Craig Price about orangutan rehabilitation. As any listener or follower of the podcast knows, Craig is a huge supporter of orangutans and Orangutan Outreach. He even goes so far as to sell calendars to raise money for them each year. Due to the massive fires that have devastated much of the orangutan's habitat in Indonesia, many of the rescue centers Richard and Orangutan Outreach support are being flooded with survivors, specifically abandoned or orphaned orangutan babies. So much so that they need to add additional housing and facilities as quickly as they can. One partner in particular The Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rescue Center is in dire need so Richard is raising money for a new baby house! Craig and Richard discuss the fires, the current situation on the ground but more importantly, the two go over what happens to the orphaned babies who are put through orangutan rehabilitation, how they go through Baby School and Forest School learning how to be wild orangutans and are eventually released into better, more protected habitats away from people. Once you hear the plight of these wonderful animals, you won't be able to ignore what's going on in their native home. You can learn more about Richard and Orangutan Outreach as well as donate to the new baby house at http:/redapes.org/BOS
Dr. John Charles (@csm014 on twitter) returns with host Craig Price to talk the reality of the movie The Martian. As we learned from his past episode, Dr. Charles works at NASA’s Human Research Program learning how to protect the delicate human body from the harsh reality of space travel. But what happens once we get there? The Matt Damon movie The Martian covers this and then some, speculating on how one man could survive on Mars for 500 days. It's a great movie but how much of it is feasible? Craig and Dr. Charles discuss the power of duct tape, the magic of potatoes, how fine the dust and dirt on Mars actually is and how windy is it there. A massive SPOILER ALERT is needed so if you haven't seen the movie, go now and then come right back here to listen on what's true and what is artistic license. You can read Dr. Charles’ blog astrocryptotriviology.blogspot.com, an occasional blog covering obscure but interesting minor aspects of spaceflight, and what they tell us about the grand human adventure that is space exploration. Also, Craig's annual charity calendar supporting Orangutan Outreach is now available. Buy one (or a dozen) today!
Rick Barongi, Director of the Houston Zoo (@houstonzoo on twitter) joins host Craig Price to discuss what goes into the running and expansion of a major zoo. If anyone follows Craig on instagram (craigprice47) or on Google+ you'll know right away how much he likes zoos and appreciates animals through his photography. Getting the opportunity to talk to the director of a zoo like the Houston Zoo was quite a treat. The two discuss the unusual situation at the Copenhagen Zoo regarding the euthanasia of a healthy giraffe and how it affects all zoos, the planned expansion of the Houston Zoo to include gorillas in 2015, the not so planned expansion of 6 additional chimpanzees recently as well as what goes into deciding which animals breed, like the new baby elephant and giraffe the zoos delivered this February. You can learn more about the Houston Zoo at http://HoustonZoo.org. This episode is also being used to raise money for Orangutan Outreach! Past guest Richard Zimmerman's Apps of Apes is being utilized by the Houston Zoo so Craig thought helping out Orangutan Outreach indirectly would help out the orangutans at the Houston Zoo too! DISCLOSURE: The Houston Zoo is not aware or affiliated with this specific charity drive. Any questions should be directed to Craig@SpeakerCraigPrice.com NOT the Houston Zoo. How can you donate? If you purchase a 2014 calendar of Craig's nature photography all of the profits will be donated to http://redapes.org. Several of the animals featured were photographed while at the Houston Zoo.
