The sea turtle was found off the coast of, guess where? The Netherlands, after becoming entangled in the net of a commercial fishing boat. The zoo said the turtle apparently was carried by currents until it was found, and the U. S. National Fish and Wildlife Service secured the turtle's return. Guys, there's a really interesting bit. Some fishermen somewhere realized that this turtle didn't belong off the coast of the Netherlands and decided to return it. Of all things. They took it to the Rotterdam Zoo the Rotterdam Zoo where it was nursed back the health. And then had a, must have a first class flight back to Houston where it was put back in the Gulf of Mexico. But this little turtle went a long ways. 5, 000 miles is quite a ride, right? Joel Saxum: I can't imagine it was doing very well in the cold water up there either. Cause right now, even now the Gulf of Mexico is 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Yeah, he, the Allen Hall: turtle at some point had to know it wasn't in the Bahamas anymore, right? It's not gonna swim back from there. Rosemary Barnes: I saw a story recently about a king penguin that that swam from Antarctica to Australia to Perth. It was it's not that far, I think it was like 3, 000 kilometers or maybe a little bit more, but similar thing of yeah. Animal just, just the kind of point in the direction and then just keep going until they reach land. It's some decent persistence. Allen Hall: Isn't it crazy when you think about how animals have moved around the planet? And then you, that's impossible. And then Rosemary says there's a penguin that's got about 1, 500 miles, just taking a light swim. Joel Saxum: That's crazy. There's a book about this called Super Navigators, and it's really fascinating, actually, to be honest with you. Allen Hall: This turtle is back home in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which is a great story, right? Gulf of Mexico for the winter. Welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. I'm your host, Allen Hall, and I'll be joined by my Uptime co host after these news headlines. Thanks A major expansion of wind turbine manufacturing is underway in Toronto, Italy as Vestas begins production of its V236 15MW offshore wind blades. The facility will produce 115. 5 meter blades capable of powering 20, 000 European households each year. The expansion, supported by EU recovery funds, will create 1, 300 new jobs in the region. The Port of Toronto has granted Vestas a nine year concession to use its logistics platform, establishing the port as a strategic hub for wind energy component manufacturing and distribution.

I had Mark Rossi on my podcast today and we had a really wonderful talk. I've known Mark for almost 30 years and he's been in my gallery almost that long as well. He's known for his sculptures of animals. He's focused primarily on the animals of the Sonoran Desert, but because he's involved in so many museum collections as well as zoo collections, he's gotten to do a lot of exotic animals as well.If you're in the world-famous San Diego Zoo, you're going to see a Mark Rossi. If you're visiting the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum here in Tucson, you're going to see a Mark Rossi. The Houston Zoo, the Minnesota Zoo, and the Philadephia Zoo - all of these places have Mark's work. So it's fun to go and find out about his story, especially for his father, Paul Rossi, who was a very well-known sculptor and painter and was the director of the Gilcrease Museum. We talk a lot about the Gilcrease, as well as Frank Waters, who was a novelist that wrote 26 different books on Hopi and Taos, and the foundation that Mark operates to preserve Frank's legacy. He was an important guy in the middle of the 20th century. This was a very interesting podcast with an individual that I've known for a very long time. It's so much fun for me when I get to crack the nut a little bit and see somebody that I've known in a new light. I got that today with Mark Rossi.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 19, 2023 is: tactile TAK-tul adjective Tactile describes something related to the sense of touch. It can also be used to describe something that is tangible, that is, perceptible by touch. // With the introduction of haptics to smartphones, receiving a call from a friend became a much more tactile experience. See the entry > Examples: “Throughout the Houston Zoo's annual October celebration, animals receive extra stimulation in the form of pumpkins. Elephants like to smash and step on the pumpkins, spokesperson Jessica Reyes says, while primates pop them open to make a snack of the seeds inside. Bears can be spotted licking the pumpkins. The tactile, sensory enrichment encourages animals to ‘be kind of curious,' providing the same kind of stimulation animals get in the wild, Reyes says.” — Allison Bagley, The Houston Chronicle, 26 Oct. 2022 Did you know? Tactile has many relatives in English, from the oft-synonymous tangible to familiar words like intact, tact, tangent, contingent, and even entire. All of these can be traced back to the Latin verb tangere, meaning “to touch.” Tactile was adopted by English speakers in the early 1600s (possibly by way of the French tactile) from the Latin adjective tactilis (“tangible”). In light of tactile having tangere for a touchstone, its dual senses of “perceptible by touch” and “of, relating to, or being the sense of touch” are perfectly sensible. Since the advent of film, television, and, ahem, touchscreens, a new sense also appears to be developing, as tactile is increasingly used to suggest that something visual is particularly evocative or suggestive of a certain texture.

The Galapagos Islands are one of the few places where visitors can get a glimpse of what the world was like before humans existed. The unique wildlife, active volcanoes, and rich undersea world has made them a haven for ecotourism. In this episode, we get two very different perspectives on what it's like to experience the Galapagos Islands.First, Scott speaks with nature photographer Tui De Roy, who has spent a lifetime in Galapagos. Her family moved to the island of Santa Cruz in 1955 when she was just two years old. As a child, she picked up a camera and began photographing the animals she grew up with. What began as a hobby blossomed into a career that has taken her around the world, and yet the Galapagos remain her home as well as one of her favorite subjects. Tui's perspective as a lifelong resident of the Galapagos Islands adds a personal touch to her photos that allow us to briefly glimpse this magical place the way she does.Next, we get a behind-the-scenes sneak preview of the Houston Zoo's new Galapagos Islands exhibit from Houston Zoo President and CEO Lee Ehmke. The exhibit, which is scheduled to open to the public on April 7, 2023, will be the only one of its kind in the world. Scott and Lee tour the exhibit and then sit down to discuss how the exhibit was designed, what visitors will experience, and why encounters with animals like those found in the Galapagos Islands are often so profoundly impactful.Tui De Roy's websites: http://www.galapagosconsultant.com & https://www.tuideroy.com Tui De Roy's latest books: “A Pocket Guide to Birds of Galápagos” and “A Lifetime in Galápagos” are available from Princeton University Press. Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
I love hearing success stories from people who have finally landed their dream jobs, especially after challenging and twisty career paths. I always like to say, your current situation is not your final destination, so I believe to strive toward your dream relentlessly.Additionally, most professors do not know how to advise for non-academic jobs. Have you been frustrated that your university has no experts in the field you wish to pursue and you feel lost? Most aspiring wildlife professionals look forward to landing that dream job after graduating college, but especially from graduate school they expect little difficulty in getting one. But in reality, that's not always the case. How do you cope when you haven't reached the wildlife career you've been working towards so hard?In this episode of the Fancy Scientist podcast, I interviewed Francisco Llauger, someone who had these kinds of struggles (similar to mine after graduate school), but is now finally working with herpetofauna at the Houston Zoo— his dream job. From talking to lots of you on Zoom, I know that many of you have experienced or are currently experiencing what Francisco has been through. But after some detours, with the right mindset and attitude through the help of the Successful Wildlife Professional program, Francisco has finally landed the career he worked so hard for! Specifically, we talked about:The importance of mindset!
