Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Do you have a lingering desire to start a wildlife career, but feel like it might be too late for you? Or maybe you're working on a wildlife career, but it isn't working for you, and time just keeps passing by? You got the degree, but then life got in the way, and you even had to get a non-wildlife job to pay the bills…Well, I'm here to tell you that whether you're 25, 45, or older, a wildlife career IS still possible for you (and yes, I get by 25-year-olds who think they are too late), and this week's Fancy Scientist podcast episode really proves it! I interviewed Yellowstone Park Ranger Lynda Moore about her journey from radiologist to environmental educator and what it's really like to work in one of the most famous protected areas. Lynda first spent 28 years working in healthcare before deciding to return to school in 2017. She graduated with her degree in wildlife conservation biology in 2021, just two weeks before her 58th birthday! Now, she is working in one of the most coveted locations in the world for wildlife job seekers: Yellowstone National Park.Through our conversation, you'll learn how Linda navigated the challenges of being a non-traditional student and successfully landed a position with the National Park Service. She didn't let age hold her back or fears about ageism in the workplace. In fact, she embraced her past experiences and used them to her advantage, leveraging her work as a radiologist to her new career while focusing on new strategies to land her a park service job. You'll learn that Lynda emphasized networking and learning from others, building relationships with professors and graduate students while getting her degree. She shares how she willingly raised her hand for new opportunities, including counting bee behaviors in a lab and driving across the country for internships. You'll also get an insider's perspective on the fascinating, and sometimes dangerous, reality of working in America's first National Park. Lynda discusses her role as an interpretive ranger, educating the public on everything from the park's unique thermal geology to the "Big Five" wildlife species in the United States. She shares eye-opening stories about "babysitting" a 2,000-pound bison and the constant struggle to keep tourists at a safe distance from unpredictable wild animals.I also asked Lynda about the technical side of landing a federal job. She credits her success to having a mentor help her navigate the notoriously difficult federal resume process. You'll learn about the new federal resume requirements and how she transitioned from the "healthcare brain" to the "biologist brain," and how she carried over the work ethic and supervisory skills from her previous career that made her a standout candidate. After the interview, I break down the take-home points that you can apply to your own journey, regardless of your age. I explain how previous "unrelated" career experience can actually contain a variety of transferable skills for wildlife jobs, how to network with people who are decades younger (or older) than you, and how seeking outside help from professionals can help you navigate something like the frustration of the federal application system. If you've ever told yourself you're "too old," that "it's too late," or that "employers won't hire someone my age," Linda is living proof that the National Park Service, and the wildlife field at large, needs your experience and your passion! And even if you aren't working towards a wildlife career, in this episode, you'll be fascinated by what it's like to work inside one of the world's most iconic parks. Specifically, we talk about:Linda's steps from a 28-year career in radiology to becoming a Park Ranger at YellowstoneWhat it's like to go back to school in your 50s and graduate alongside your own daughterHow starting your career later in life can work to your advantage: using "adult money" and maturity can be a competitive edge in wildlife workBehind-the-scenes of working at Old Faithful and educating the public on thermal safetyWhy "interpreting" wildlife behavior is actually a safety talk in disguiseFascinating animal facts and the emotional impact of seeing a wolf in the wild for the first timeLynda's most impactful animal moment with Lucy the Orangutan at the National ZooPractical tips for federal resumes and navigating the shift from long-form to two-page limitsThe reality of seasonal life in temporary wildlife workThe importance of using informational interviews to learn the "hidden" requirements of jobsWhy you should never underestimate yourself before you even apply for a jobThe mindset shift needed to overcome imposter syndrome as a career switcherHow protecting the natural world starts with educating a single tourist or childJump Links:02:56 Meet Ranger Linda04:13 Career Switch Story05:36 Internships And Mentors07:38 Landing Yellowstone Job08:24 Seasonal Life Logistics10:41 Ranger Duties Explained13:32 Visitor Questions And History15:24 Expectations Versus Reality18:08 Wildlife Safety Lessons19:52 Craziest Tourist Encounters25:04 Bison Babysitting And Bears27:44 Choosing Biology Later32:23 Networking in School34:09 Ageism and Confidence37:06 Federal Resume Tips39:40 Unforgettable Animal Moments43:52 Teaching Predators Balance45:39 How to Get Hired49:32 Key Takeaways Wrap UpDream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? Hebat!

Biruté Mary Galdikas passed away on March 24, 2026, at the age of 79. She spent more than 50 years studying orangutans in Borneo and fighting to protect them. Before she began her work, orangutans were the least understood of the great apes. She changed that. Her research formed the foundation of what we now know about orangutans. She was the first to learn what they ate, how they lived, how they moved, their long interbirth intervals, and so much more. Including the many threats to their survival. Her lifelong dedication inspired generations to care about orangutans and their forests, and to pursue careers in the field she helped shape. I had the honor and privilege of interviewing Birute Galdikas in 2021, on the fiftieth anniversary of her study. We're re-releasing this episode in her honor. Southeast Asia's rainforests are among the most biologically rich ecosystems on Earth, yet they are disappearing at an alarming rate. In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, we speak with Leif Cocks, founder of The Orangutan Project, about the urgent challenge of protecting the last remaining rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia and the wildlife that depends on them.Orangutans are one of the most intelligent and self-aware species on the planet, but their survival is tightly linked to the fate of Southeast Asia's forests. In this conversation, Leif explains why orangutans struggle to survive in captivity and why protecting wild rainforest ecosystems is the only long-term solution for their conservation. Research has shown that orangutans often live shorter lives in captivity than they do in the wild, highlighting the importance of protecting their natural habitats and supporting rehabilitation and reintroduction programs. The episode explores how The Orangutan Project works to rescue, rehabilitate, and release displaced orangutans while simultaneously focusing on the bigger picture: safeguarding large, intact rainforest ecosystems. Every individual orangutan rescued represents not only an animal in need but also a crucial genetic resource for a critically endangered species whose survival depends on protecting remaining populations.Beyond orangutans, the conversation expands to the wider conservation landscape of Southeast Asia. Leif discusses the plight of Sumatran tigers, Asian elephants, and other threatened species that share the same rainforest ecosystems. With fewer than 300 Sumatran tigers remaining, fragmented populations and habitat loss have made long-term survival increasingly difficult. Conservation efforts now require innovative strategies such as metapopulation management, where individuals are carefully moved between isolated populations to maintain genetic diversity. The discussion also examines the major threats facing wildlife across Indonesia and Malaysia. These include deforestation for agriculture, illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. In many cases, the destruction of rainforest habitats forces animals into farmland and villages, creating conflict with local communities and leading to further wildlife losses.Leif also highlights the importance of protecting large rainforest landscapes, particularly lowland riverine forests, which support some of the highest biodiversity in Southeast Asia. Conservation programs supported by The Orangutan Project focus on securing these ecosystems through habitat protection, ranger patrols, wildlife monitoring, community engagement, and reforestation initiatives.A key theme of the episode is that successful conservation must include people. Initiatives such as the Forests for People program work with local communities to support education, sustainable livelihoods, and improved food security while ensuring forests remain intact for wildlife and future generations. This episode provides a deep dive into the realities of conservation in Southeast Asia—from orangutan rescue and rehabilitation to the protection of entire rainforest ecosystems that support elephants, tigers, and countless other species. It is a powerful reminder that saving wildlife ultimately depends on protecting the landscapes they call home. Leif is also the founder of The International Tiger Project and The International Elephant Project.Subscribe to the Think Wildlife Podcast for more conversations with leading conservationists, scientists, and wildlife practitioners working to protect biodiversity around the world.#Orangutans #RainforestConservation #OrangutanProject #SumatranTiger #AsianElephants #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity #Deforestation #ConservationPodcast #ThinkWildlife Get full access to The Think Wildlife Podcast at anishbanerjee.substack.com/subscribe

Woolooga Yowie ReportsIntroductionToday's focus is on two distinct Yowie sightings that occurred at the same location, six years apart. The area is situated fifteen minutes west of Gympie, Queensland—a region well-known for its numerous Yowie encounters over the years. First Yowie ReportThe initial sighting involved a female passenger who spotted a Yowie in a field. She urged the driver to turn back so they could get a better look, but he refused, and the opportunity to observe the creature was lost. The encounter was particularly notable for its description: the Yowie was likened to an Orangutan, standing motionless like a statue and making eye contact as the vehicle sped past.Second Yowie ReportThe second sighting, also at Woolooga, took place six years after the first. This time, the Yowie was not stationary but instead was seen running and obliged to cross the road as the vehicle approached. This report highlights a stark contrast in behaviour compared to the initial encounter.Location Description and AdviceThe site of these sightings consists mainly of farm fields with sparse tree cover. Surrounding these fields are mountains with dense forests, high peaks and deep valleys, all part of the Great Dividing Range (GDR). This vast corridor of forest stretches along the entire eastern side of Australia, providing ample habitat for wildlife, including reported Yowie activity. One memorable situation involved a rural house where the owner had an opportunity for “Bigfoot bartering”. Instead of engaging, the owner installed sensor lights. For rural properties experiencing regular Yowie visits and disturbances, installing sensor lights and trail cameras is recommended as an effective way to reduce unwanted encounters. For more comprehensive information, reports and history of the Yowie, visit our Website at www.yowiehunters.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/yowiehunters-witness-reports. So our journey this episode takes us to a recital, where Amos and Edda get a less than glowing review from a critic. They are SO BAD at taking any amount of criticism that they go onstage the next night to flip the critic off. Oh wait! Yeah. In this world, Amos and Edda have a multi-night engagement AND the critic comes to EVERY performance AND writes about every performance. Just like in real life! So Amos flips off the audience (as a way of showing the audience that he disapproves of the critic's take) and Edda joins him. Then there's a reaction to THAT reaction, which also rubs Amos and Edda the wrong way. Because why wouldn't they be anything but, as they admit, childish, vindictive and ridiculous? There's a brief Sunday strip sidebar about how a bunch of scientists ask Amos to ask Edda how she keeps her boobs in her dress. I wish we were kidding about this, but no, this is REALLY what the Sunday strip is about. Then we return to the critic storyline where the critic shows up for a THIRD STRAIGHT performance to explain himself to Edda. She takes it well, and by that I mean she threatens to make him strip naked and dance in front of the audience. But only for the first 100 attendees. Yeah. It made zero sense to us either. In tonight's Dead Letter, you'll hear a bizarre tale from rural Ohio, one of our favorite strange states, involving a creature known only as the "Lock Looker." This cryptid, with its orangutan-like build, glowing orange eyes, and famous movie scream, lurks near a dam and has been sighted by both the storyteller and their father. It may have been around a while. Join Scott and Forrest as they briefly debate the pronunciation of Orangutan and also delve into this multi-generational mystery. Dale Earnhardt Jr. reunites with an old friend from a different world, longtime PGA competitor Boo Weekley. For those who don't know Boo, he's a world-class storyteller and one hell of a golfer. If you don't know Boo, you'll be a fan of his after this episode. From his legendary porta-potty story to the time he once fought an orangutan, it's safe to say you'll be entertained during this one. After establishing himself as one of the most unique personalities in the professional golfing world, Boo became connected with Dale through another lifelong interest: auto racing. Boo explains that he grew up now far from a local dirt track in Florida, and his entire family followed NASCAR passionately. To quote Boo himself: “It wasn't football on Sundays, it was NASCAR”. Dale recalls several instances of Boo traveling to Charlotte for race weekends, and how he became friends with many of Dale's close friends during those trips.Boo's professional career came about after he had given up on playing golf. He explains that while he was working as a hydroblaster at the Monsanto plant in Pensacola, he was convinced by longtime friend Heath Slocum to attend a local tournament. He ended up winning and quickly declared himself “professional,” and began collecting sponsorship to enter larger, higher-paying events. Boo became a fan favorite on the PGA Tour thanks to his memorable nickname and down-to-earth personality. After taking some time away from the sport due to injuries, he is now back full-time playing with the PGA Tour ChampionsAnd for more content check out our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@DirtyMoMediaDirty Mo Media is launching a new e-commerce merch line!
