TWiP solves the case of the man in the Malaysian city of Kucheng who presents with left arm swelling, and presents a new case for you to decipher. This is the Sarawak portion of Malaysia. A man in his late 30s is admitted to the hospital in December with daily fevers that last for several hours and shaking chills. He had previously been healthy with no medical problems. He lives in the city and works in an office, however, in the few weeks prior to getting admitted he was visiting the jungle. Apparently not too far outside of Kuching, one can go up into the jungle and see Orangutans. He had gone into the jungle but this was 2 weeks prior to the onset of symptoms. Since then he reports no unusual exposures. He lives with his wife and children and they are all healthy. A few days prior to admission he noted fever, chills, and a headache. He is a little nauseated but no vomiting. On exam he has a fast heart rate and appears ill. His respiratory rate is increased and he is not febrile on admission but later does have fever. No enlargement of the liver or spleen on exam. Otherwise unremarkable. His labs are notable for low white blood cells, anemia, and a platelet count of less than 50k per microL. His coagulation studies are abnormal, serum creatinine is elevated, and there is elevation of his serum aminotransferases. A woman encounters an orangutan-looking creature on her porch at her swampy homestead. A hunter sees a troop of baboons. A hairy hand reaches into a deer blind. Across the American South, particularly in states like Texas and Florida, tales have surfaced for decades of strange, often unnerving encounters in the wilderness—not with known native wildlife, but with creatures resembling feral apes or wild primates. Some researchers believe these sightings may be linked to feral populations of escaped or released primates. In the mid-20th century, exotic pet ownership and roadside zoos were far more common, and many animals were let loose or escaped into the wild. Over time, it's possible that some species adapted to their environments, forming secretive breeding populations in remote, unmonitored regions. Wildlife journalist and field investigators have documented everything from anomalous hair samples to strange vocal recordings in these hotspots. The behaviors described—chest-beating, howling, and ambush-like movements—align more with great apes than with any known North American species. In the latest episode of Dark Outdoors, we dive deep into these encounters with feral apes and wild primates, exploring the theories, legends, and firsthand accounts that paint a chilling portrait of what might be lurking just beyond the campfire's glow.

In this episode Professor Ramble and the Velvet Fist discuss motherhood and their relationshiops withthier mothers with special guests Gherkin and Karen."There was an NPR show about Keiko, (the animal actor who played the whale in Free Willy - who was rescued from a sea park in Mexico City and later released into the wild), from that show I learned that male Orcas are mamma's boys who spend the majority of their lives in close proximity to their mothers. Fascinating!Orangutans are the opposite with daughters being the ones who stay with their mommas in the high green jungle sea...With standard chimps, (I'm not sure for Bonobos) your status in the tribe, whether it's even possible for you to become the leader for example, entirely depends on who your mother is. Not your strength, smarts, or banana acquisition skills. (But I guess Fatherhood technically can't even exist in chimps)Hyenas, now considered to be almost as smart as chimps, are entirely matriarchal and only high status daughters can be queens.I just think it's fascinating how the job of Motherhood is expressed and has such an effect on the way the world operates."

Planet of the Apes was a franchise spawning phenomenon in the late 60s. Living in the center of the sci fi spectrum, it wore its b-movie camp on its sleeve right next to relevant social commentary. With Charlton Heston playing opposite some revolutionary make up effects, off a script by Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling and a former HUAC blacklist-er, Planet of the Apes took everyone by surprise. Clint, Alex and CineFix's senior Apes Correspondent Scott Collura talk about the impossibility of watching this movie in proper context, the genius and often overlooked score, how The Simpsons lovingly spoils classic film and creative new ways to pronounce Orangutan. Meanwhile, Dan's algorithm hates every ape it sees, from chimpan-A to chimpanzee... In a groundbreaking discovery, scientists have observed a male orangutan, Rakus, using plants as medicine—a first-ever recording of a wild animal self-medicating for wound care. This unique behavior was spotted in the jungle, where Rakus chewed the stem and leaves of a plant known for its anti-inflammatory properties and applied it to his injured cheek. The wound, likely caused by a territorial fight, healed within a month. What makes this finding extraordinary is its implications for both orangutans and humans. Dr Isabelle Laumer, the lead researcher and guest on our latest Talking Apes episode, highlights how Rakus' actions could offer insights into the evolutionary roots of self-medication in primates, possibly tracing back to a common ancestor. Her research opens up questions about how much orangutans—and perhaps other great apes—might already know about medicinal plants in their environment.Join us for this special Orangutan Caring Week episode to explore how this discovery reshapes our understanding of primate intelligence, behavior, and our shared evolutionary past. I am so excited to talk to Amy Robbins, a self-declared “jack of all trades, master of none,” but honestly, an incredibly impressive person. Amy is the Deputy Curator of Mammals at Auckland Zoo and the founder of the Sumatran Ranger Project. She has been working with animals and finding innovative ways to help them for decades, and it is an honour to share her story with you. In this episode, she shares: How she got into the zoo industry Why modern zoos are important and how they are actually helping Her conservation efforts and work with communities The innovative habitat design for orangutans that Auckland Zoo has developed The Sumatran Ranger Project and how it is making a difference Why she is leading sustainable tourism and conservation adventures Her experiences and opinions on the palm oil industry The app you can use to track and control your palm oil consumption Key Quotes: "Whatever we do, consume, and use has an impact." "You have to work with these communities. And it can't be me as this white girl coming in saying you should do this. It's me being well-connected... But the people doing the work, the real conservation heroes, are those on the ground, working day in and day out." "We sit there and talk about these incredible animals that live in trees and how well they're adapted for life in the trees, and yet a lot of zoos still provide environments where orangutans have to live on the ground." For the past seven seasons, How many geese? has flourished atop the twin foundations of whimsy and shenanigans. Well, Jack has decided that season eight is when that comes crashing to a halt - as he blasts through our whimsical bedrock and holds a mirror up to us all to have us question what makes a society... and can utopias exist? He does this, in true Goose fashion, through the medium of some research on rodents in the 20th century. You will never look at an influencer the same again once you've heard what he's uncovered... It's not just existential philosophy though (hooray!) as we also consider what animals deserve hands and Roddy's arena challenger is sent in by someone who perhaps knows too much... We're back! A new season is dawning in Gooseland as we kick off series 8 with a banger. We stumble across lots of awesome people in making this show, and when we heard the stories that one of them had to tell, we knew we needed to get him on the show. Enter Ben Callison - CEO of Borneo Orangutan Survival UK, builder of hurricane proof tiger enclosures and carer of one-armed Kangaroo boxers. We sit down with him to learn about how his career unfolded and sending Orangutans to school is helping to return them to the jungle. TW: genetic experimentation on animals, mention of Satan Oh Frabjious Day, weirdos! Welcome to another episode of KEEP IT WEIRD, the podcast for all things strange and unusual, hairy and scary, mysterious and unknown and everything in between!! This week we cover FOUR very WEIRD topics, we introduce some new segments, we show off some cool stuff we bought with our adult money and we even recite some poetry. Lauren starts us off with her very first MONSTER WATCH as we head to Santa Paula California in search of the BILLIWHACK MONSTER. This thing might be a bigfoot, a government experiment gone horribly awry, an interdimensional creature that crawled through a hole in space-time or possibly the devil himself. Ashley brings us two stories in a new segment she calls MONKEY'N AROUND! First up is our new favorite Orangutan, KEN ALLEN. Known as the "Hairy Houdini" at the San Diego zoo, Ken became famous for outwitting his zoo handlers and escaping his "inescapable" enclosure several times. Then we head into the modern day and discuss China splicing human DNA into chimpanzees. The goal is to attempt to find the gene that gave us consciousness... but could it result in Planet of the Apes? And finally Lauren gives us a BIT O' BIOLOGY with a 2009 study in Scientific American regarding music and how not only does it move us emotionally and affect our "heart" but it also might affect our HEART!! That's right, it's possible that Music may help keep your cardiovascular system regulated and we may be able to use music in the future to help treat victims of heart attacks and strokes to re-regulate their circulatory systems.
