What a great way to open the new season! This movie combines elements of small-town zaniness, Martian invasion, married romance, and homicidal zombies in a melting pot of a movie starring Brenda James, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker and Elizabeth Banks. If I could describe Brenda with one word, it would be FUN! I loved how she went into detail describing her character and what it was like to be on set with Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion. She broke it down for me: from the special effects to the raw meat that she had to smell and handle while performing exceptionally well. I would not be able to think of a better person to portray Brenda – she auditioned, and she delivered! This is a huge honor for me because I am a fan of the movie and I am a fan of her work – I truly hope that I get to see her in more movies in the future. I had an absolute blast talking to Brenda and getting the inside scoop about her character, the special effects, the set, the makeup, the director, and other actors. She is currently involved with a movie called “Dorothea” which is still in post-production. Make sure to keep an eye on the release date!

Join Mark Radulich and guest Evan Bevins as they explore Corrective Measures, the six-issue limited comic series from Arcana Studio, written by Grant Chastain with art by Fran Moyano. Originally published in 2008, the series tells the story of San Tiburon, a maximum-security prison for super-powered criminals, where corruption runs rampant, and power struggles erupt between inmates, guards, and shadowy government forces. We'll break down the key themes, character dynamics, and narrative choices that made the comic a cult favorite, while also discussing its dark, noir-inspired art style and its place in the superhero genre outside the mainstream publishers. The conversation then shifts to the 2022 live-action adaptation, directed by Sean Patrick O'Reilly and starring Bruce Willis, Michael Rooker, and Tom Cavanagh. We'll explore the film's production history, how it differs from the source material, and the challenges of adapting a complex, character-driven comic on a limited budget. Was the movie a faithful translation of Corrective Measures, or did it strip away the depth that made the comic compelling? Tune in as we analyze both versions and determine whether the film does justice to its gritty, super-powered prison drama roots!Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Just like Cole Trickle, we're more afraid of being nothing than we are of being hurt. Somehow....that makes this re-run make a lot more sense. Enjoy! Summary: The team that brought you Top Gun, brings you Top Car - better known as Days of Thunder. Both movies feature a wildly talented but undisciplined rebel who is as awesome with driving machinery as he is with the ladies. Both feature a helmet-less motorcycle riding Tom Cruise as the lead who goes through massive success riding his own ego….until his butt can't cash them when he gets hurt - in one case just mentally, and in the other physically. Both leave him scared to re-engage at the thing he does best...until he basically resolves it in about 20 seconds by realizing….he'd damn well better or his friends were going to die in one case, and in the other they'd just be super bummed they lost the race...and move on with life. Whatever. Both feature a wise father figure Tom Cruise at first rejects the authority of, then later craves the leadership and approval from. Both have Val Kilmer as Iceman playing the uber talented and more successful nemesis turned friend….except in Days of Thunder it's Michael Rooker playing Rowdy Burns, both have an amazing failure on the first try to woo the leading lady, and both have a dead goose scene...except in days of thunder it was just a bird run over by a rental car. This is the most perfect racing movie of all however, and even today still is adored by fans - and NASCAR drivers - including the current reigning NASCAR Cup Series Champion who goes by the name of Rowdy Busch...and runs number 51 on his own race cars outside of the Cup Series. This is the movie that proves to get the girls, you gotta go fast, and if you're from California you're not really a yankee...you're not really from anywhere. A taut, well-staged action thriller that served as a revitalization effort for Stallone's leading man bonafides in the early 90s after a rough patch of box office and critical bombs, the film sports a refreshingly lean premise and a host of jaw-dropping setpieces that were rewarded with a massive $255 million worldwide box office haul and a quietly outsized influence on the past three decades of action cinema. We begin with a discussion of Stallone and how the film makes use of both the actor's surprising capacity for subtlety in performance as well as his much more conspicuous and impressive physique. Then, we pull apart the film's broadly apolitical plot mechanics, including the intricate ways the script navigates around giving John Lithgow's Eric Qualen an explicitly partisan or geopolitical motive. Finally, we talk broadly about the sport of mountain climbing, the colonial ideology perpetuated by notions of conquering forbidding terrain, and the ways that indigenous communities are seeking to problematize imperialist narratives and perspectives within arenas of outdoor sport and recreation.Read Eamon's recent reviews for Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain and Seijun Suzuki's Underworld Beauty at Irish Film Critic.Follow Eamon Tracy on Twitter.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Meticulously composed on several different film formats, masterfully edited in a radical, experimental style, and structured as a steady unraveling of institutional footings, the film stands as one of the finest formal evocations of political radicalization ever made for the silver screen. We discuss the film's groundbreaking formalism, how it creates an unmooring effect on behalf of its viewers, and charts the cacophonous frenzy of conspiracy thinking. Then, we talk about where Stone sits in relation to the film's protagonist Jim Garrison, what the film gets very wrong, and why the minutiae doesn't ultimately matter in the borader context of its critique of empire. Finally we look to the upcoming election, share our personal thoughts on the outcomes, and what it means for Palestinian resistance and political movements in our own country.Follow Sami Gold on Twitter.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael

In this Halloween "spooky season" episode of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, we delve into the unsettling world of true crime cinema with Chuck Parello, a filmmaker renowned for his work on notorious serial killer films. Parello began as the publicist for John McNaughton's groundbreaking and controversial Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which faced a grueling battle with the MPAA that refused to grant it an R-rating despite extensive cuts. J.G. and Chuck discuss the haunting power of Henry, the terrifyingly quiet portrayal of the titular character by Michael Rooker, and how the film isn't a straightforward biopic of infamous killers Henry Lee Lucas, who came to be known as "The Confessions Killer" for fabricating many of his claims in exchange for special privileges, or Otis Toole but rather a unique examination of monstrous characters. Chuck then details his own sequel, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II, where Henry is drawn into the world of arsonists, shedding light on the creative origins of that choice. The conversation continues with Chuck's film Ed Gein, which diverges from fictionalized films inspired by the Butcher of Plainfield—such as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs—and instead stays grounded in the actual life and psyche of Ed Gein. Featuring Steve Railsback, known for his unnerving performance as Charles Manson in the 1970s TV miniseries Helter Skelter, Railsback's portrayal of Gein is both unsettling and oddly tragic, showcasing a different side of the infamous killer. Chuck and J.G. also discuss The Hillside Strangler, a disturbing portrayal of Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono's deadly partnership, in which C. Thomas Howell and Nicholas Turturro take on chilling roles as the murderous cousins whose combined force drove them to escalate their crimes in late 1970s Los Angeles. Further, Chuck shares insights on his upcoming project on the Sunset Strip Killers/The Sunset Slayers (Doug Clark and Carol Bundy) and how he was originally was slated to direct the 2002 Ted Bundy biopic before Oingo Boingo's Matthew Bright ended up with the job. They tackle ethical questions surrounding the portrayal of real-life killers, the potential for exploitation, and the cultural obsession with true crime, shedding light on the complex responsibilities of filmmakers in this genre. This episode is a must-listen for fans of horror, crime thrillers, and serial killer cinema, as it examines the artistry and ethics of bringing these haunting real-life tales to the screen.

There's a serial killer around New York city going around murdering people in increasingly bizarre ways while also leaving increasingly minute details behind as clues.  Denzel Washington plays the brilliant criminologist Lincoln Rhymes who has been paralyzed from the neck down but can still solve clues while bedridden and Angelina Jolie plays Amelia, a plucky young beat cop-former model with a natural eye for forensics and...yada yada yada...they team up to catch the killer.  Directed by Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Clear and Present Danger, Sliver), this would end up be the last of SEVERAL thrillers released throughout the 1990's focusing on the hunt for a serial killer.  And while it might not hold up to the best (The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en) within this subgenre, it IS somewhat elevated by a stacked cast lead by Denzel and Angelina, also including Ed O'Neil, Queen Latifah, Michael Rooker, Luis Guzman, and Leland Orser.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week, we're getting dragged by the anchor-cable into an ancient war between angry bureaucrats and aloof teleporters as we jump in to the 2008 forgotbuster Jumper, directed by Doug Liman, and starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson, Michael Rooker, Diane Lane, Kristen Stewart and AnnaSophia Robb. After a June full of five-star films, we intentionally picked a stinker this week -- though it's a movie J Mo thrifted out of genuine interest, as the talent both in front of and behind the camera is formidable to say the least, and the movie's barely-explored concept is not without potential. But hey, sometimes the most fun episodes are the ones where we all agree the movie is a big hunk of junk. Meanwhile, Justin's going down the rabbit hole of the original series Star Trek films, while Hayley files a theatrical field report on A Quiet Place: Day One. If you'd like to stream Jumper this week, you can't! It should be on Disney+ or Hulu but it's not. They want it to stay buried. Other works referenced in this episode include Pig, The Great Muppet Caper, Clifford, Set It Up, The Ring, Joy Ride, Hot Rod, Con Air, The Spectacular Now, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Shattered Glass, American Made, Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, Speed, Speed Racer, X2: X-Men United, The Three Amigos, John Wick, The Happening and Behind Enemy Lines. Next week, as Axel Foley returns in a direct-to-Netflix fourth installment, we're winding the clock back 40 years to the 1984 original Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, with Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and Paramount+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

For this week's second podcast review, Josh Parham & Giovanni Lago, and I are reviewing the latest film from Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner, "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1," starring Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower & Thomas Haden Church. After having its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, the first part of Costner's epic western (which will stretch across four separate films) has been met with mixed reviews, some calling it a classic throwback to the great westerns we rarely see get made anymore and others saying it doesn't work as a standalone film. Does it belong on television or in the theater? What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss this, plus the film's theme, its magnificent score, the performances from the massive ensemble, whether or not it has awards potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision-making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 49 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Karen Peterson to discuss the latest film in their Tony Scott series, Days of Thunder (1990). Four years after making the monster hit that was Top Gun, Tony Scott reteamed with Tom Cruise and producers Dom Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to take their collaboration from the skies to the racetrack with Days of Thunder. After making Beverly Hills Cop II and Revenge (which are discussed briefly on the show), Scott was tapped to recreate the magic of his 1986 hit, this time with his leading man a bigger star and co-writer on the project, inspired by Cruise falling in love with racing, as well as the producers loving this new idea. While Scott clashed with Simpson and Bruckheimer throughout the production, the end result is an entertaining sports action drama with tremendous performances by Cruise and Robert Duvall, as well as the breakout role for Nicole Kidman. Ryan, Jay and Karen (the biggest Tom Cruise fan we know) discuss the film, their relationships to the sport of racing and their overall love of sports, Karen's favorite Tom Cruise movie, the overt boyish behavior the characters have throughout the film, if the ending/John C. Reilly side plot works, the racing scenes, the infamous wheelchair race scene between Cruise and Michael Rooker, and if this movie is better than Top Gun. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h05m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Tony Scott with a review of his next film, The Last Boy Scout. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it.
