In this episode, I chat with Jim Keen about why he became an architect, how a boy from Manchester ended up in New York, and the challenges of re-acclimating to the West after travelling the world. We also discuss the present and near future of artificial intelligence: text-to-image generation AI, will we develop self-aware machines, and just what will the job market look like post-AI? As always, there are The Big Questions and Revenge of the Muse, and new to season 3 is The Lightning Round. Books of his we discuss are: The Alice Yu trilogy (The Paradise Factory, This Automatic Eden, The Genesis Engine), Agent Zero, and the Cortex Saga. Revenge of the Muse - A Protagonist: Alice Yu and the synopsis of a new novella Further info on this and other episodes, as well as story cube images, author info and content, can be found at AlternateFutures.co.uk

In Episode 125, "Lucky Chick," we speak with Felicity Seidel, whose solo show, “Lucky Chick” opens April 19 at The Paradise Factory in New York. From growing up on the then-mean streets of New York City and being plucked from the audience by the Grateful Dead to run-ins with drug cartels, “Lucky Chick” details Felicity’s wild-but-true life of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. She tells us how the show came about, what former beau Bob Weir knows of the show and how she'd fare growing up in today's New York City. In “The POTSie" this week, Tom opens up about deflecting the steady stream of health advice that pours in from his loved ones (yes, even Nikki's), including a very honest answer to the all-too-popular suggestion of calling his doctor(s) when he's having one of his bad days. House & TechnoWes Baggaley - London, UKSoundcloudMixcloudWes started collecting music at a very young age. He got his first record player when he was six years old and started collecting ex jukebox 7” singles with his 50p a week pocket money. After a brief flirtation with thrash metal he started to frequent the legendary Wigan Pier in his home town of Wigan in 1991 (he was underage I might add!). It was all rave and piano house at the Pier back then and he was bitten by the rave bug. In 1995 he went to Back to Basics in Leeds for a friend's birthday. Some dj he'd never heard of called Derrick Carter was playing. He was playing proper house music, techno and disco mixed together. Wes hadn't heard anyone dj this was before and soon started to obsessively try to get to every Derrick Carter gig in the UK and discovered other djs like playing different kinds of electronic dance music and started to track down the names of the tracks and collect mix tapes and 12” singles.Wes finally bought a pair of Technics 1210's and a mixer in 2010. He now lived in Manchester and had built up quite a collection of vinyl from hanging around the record shops of Oldham Street on a daily basis. He got his first gig in September 2001 (1 week after buying the decks)at the newly opened (and now sadly closed) Legends Nightclub.  After a drunken conversation with the manager on a Friday night (that Wes couldn't remember) he got a phone call on the Saturday asking him to play that night. Wes wasn't going to let the small detail of not being able to mix get in the way. He must have done something right because he became the weekly resident for the next four years where he developed his mixing skills and his style of deep house, techno and whatever else he felt like playing J. He played got booked for various other gigs in Manchester at the Attic, Paradise Factory, the Deaf Institute and became a resident for the monthly Terrorist night before moving to London in 2010.Since moving to London Wes has played at Megawoof, Dalston Boys Club, Area, Union and has a quarterly residency at Vogue Fabrics and is a resident at the Recon Parties. He has also been a guest on Proton Radio. Track List: Lee Gamble – M25 Echo Lucy – Finnegan Anthony Naples – Slackness Boddika – Soul What (Beats Mix) Paranoid London – Paris Dub 1 Tripeo – 2nd Trip Delroy Edwards – Feelings Mike Huckaby – Basement Track Tuff City Kids – SFS Omar s – 998 Chez Damier – Untitled Sound Stream – Inferno Italo Johnson – 3A Serge & Tyrell – Pump-O-Matic Arttu Feat. I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs. We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days. All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics. Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 so I’ll also upload this to the Classic Archive podcast.
