Los megaincendios en Chile han devorado cientos de miles de hectáreas de bosques. Esta tragedia, que se suma a la del 2017 cuando ocurrieron incendios de magnitud similar, obliga a Chile a repensar su modelo de monocultivo forestal que trae beneficios para la industria del papel, pero favorece los incendios. Las imágenes de un grupo de vecinos obligados a refugiarse una piscina en medio del incendio dan cuenta de la violencia de los incendios que azotan Chile en este inicio de año. Bajo una lluvia de chipas, de palos en llamas y en medio de un aire saturado de humos negros, cuatro adultos y dos niños salvaron su vida arrojándose a una piscina en la localidad de Santa Juana en el Bío Bío, una de las regiones chilenas devastadas por los incendios.“Tenemos todas las zonas rurales arrasadas en la comuna”, alertó unos días después al micrófono de RFI la alcaldesa de la localidad de Santa Juana, Ana Albornoz. “Día a día encontramos nueva osamenta que no sabemos si son de animales o de personas, por lo tanto, la situación es absolutamente critica”, contó Albornoz.Tras una semana de expansión, los megaincendios devastaron más de 400.000 hectáreas de plantaciones forestales, bosques y cultivos en el centro sur del país, según un balance aún provisional. La zona afectada equivale a más de un tercio del territorio de Puerto Rico.A pesar del despliegue de brigadas antiincendios de varios países del mundo, decenas de focos fueron difíciles de controlar. Según un primer balance, el fuego ha causado más de 20 muertos y miles de damnificados.“En los últimos años, nuestro país ha vivido los embates propios del cambio climático. Con sequía cumulada, condiciones cambiantes del clima con temperaturas de hasta 42 grados”, subrayó el presidente chileno Gabriel Boric en una gira en las zonas afectadas por los incendios.Estos fenómenos climáticos propicios a favorecer la combustión fueron bautizados “el triple treinta”. Consiste en temperaturas superiores a 30 grados, vientos de más de 30 km/h y una tasa de humedad menor al 30%.Contexto de cambio climático“Estas condiciones climáticas son extraordinarias, no son normales. Ahora, en cambio climático, ya no hay normalidad. Estamos viendo estos episodios dramáticos de vientos muy fuertes altas temperaturas superando los 40 grados y una muy baja humedad”, observa el ingeniero forestal Aníbal Pauchard.Desde la región de Bío Bío, particularmente afectada por este verano infernal, Pauchard, quien también es profesor en la Facultad de Ciencias Forestales de la Universidad de Concepción, advierte que “todo indica que estos eventos van a ocurrir más frecuentemente”.Además de las pérdidas de vidas humanas, los daños materiales, los incendios arrasaron el ecosistema y silvestre. Si bien en estas regiones, los incendios afectan principalmente las plantaciones forestales, “siempre hay fragmentos de bosques nativos y zonas aledañas que se ven afectados con estas grandes masas de combustibles. Hay muchas especies de faunas silvestres que se han adaptado a las plantaciones” destinadas a la industria papelera, apunta Luciano Pérez presidente de la ONG Comité pro Defensa de la Fauna y Flora CODEFF de Chile.“Ya hemos estado recibiendo en los centros de rehabilitación algunos animales silvestres quemados, siniestrados, como el pudú, los ciervos más pequeños del mundo, que viven acá en esta zona de Chile. Es un animal muy sensible que al ser pequeño no tienen la capacidad física de arrancar, es muy nervioso y vulnerable. Seguramente van a aparecer unos zorros también”, lamenta el ambientalista.La industria forestal en la miraLa gravedad de estos megaincendios no se debe solo a la sequía, el calor y el viento. Después de otra gravísima temporada de incendios que arrasaron con más de 500.000 hectáreas de vegetación en 2017, varios informes científicos y ambientalistas apuntaron a la industria forestal chilena que ha sembrado pino y eucalipto en extensas regiones del centro sur del país para la producción de papel. Un negocio jugoso pero que les pasa factura a regiones enteras.Contactada por RFI, Ana Albornoz, alcaldesa de Santa Juana, uno de los municipios más afectados por los incendios, arremete sin rodeos contra “una industria forestal desatada que no tiene ninguna regulación. Las empresas forestales y los particulares plantan al lado de los asentamientos humanos sin dejar ninguna faja de protección, y tampoco se someten a impacto ambiental antes de plantar esos árboles”.La alcaldesa reconoce que la industria forestal genera muchos empleos, pero “debe modernizarse para enfrentar la escasez hídrica y el cambio climático”."Decir que por las plantaciones se están propagando los incendios es poco acertado: sí contribuyen porque se quema todo el combustible, pero que sea exclusiva responsabilidad de las plantaciones es un error", replicó Silvia Hormazábal, del departamento de Prevención y Protección de la Corporación Chilena de la Madera (Corma), la agrupación que reúne el sector de las empresas forestales.Sin embargo, en 2020, un informe del centro de ciencia del clima y la resiliencia, CR2, que agrupa a investigadores de varias universidades chilenas, estableció claramente que los monocultivos en grandes áreas de especies particularmente inflamables como el pino y el eucalipto favorecen la propagación del fuego (descargar el informe en PDF).Pinos y eucaliptos, material inflamable“El pino y el eucalipto han sido las dos especies más utilizadas históricamente en Chile. Tiene que ver con bonificaciones que se recibían a través del decreto 701, un mecanismo instalado en el periodo de la dictadura”, recuerda el activista ecologista Luciano Pérez, quien denuncia este modelo económico impulsado en los años 70.“Originalmente era para recuperar suelos con aptitud forestal y estabilizar dunas, pero al recibir una bonificación del estado, lo que fue generando fue sustitución de bosque. Mucha gente empezó a talar los bosques nativos para reemplazarlos por pinos y eucaliptos, las dos especies más utilizadas. Hoy en día este gran negocio ya no es solo de grandes empresarios sino también que se traspasó a pequeños y medianos productores hicieran lo mismo”, denuncia Pérez.En el centro sur de Chile, donde se producen estos mega incendios, cerca del 20% del bosque nativo ha sido reemplazado por plantaciones forestales, matorrales y pastizales que representan la mayor parte de las zonas incendiadas, indicaban los autores del informe de CR2.Para el ingeniero forestal Aníbal Pauchard, ya es urgente repensar el modelo del uso de suelo en Chile, para acabar con los monocultivos de especies particularmente inflamables y de crecimiento rápido. “Con este cambio climático tan intenso, es probable que uno vaya a tener que generar cortafuegos, áreas sin vegetación, o de vegetación baja de pastoreo de oveja o ganado, que corten el fuego. If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you'd have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing. Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground. An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music's brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin',” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They're the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he's been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career. Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That's really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances. Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.” The early years bore some of the work for which they're still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin',” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal. “Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar. In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar's residency began to grow. The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1's in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house's first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat' in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there's something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn't think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia's gonna be all over this!'” In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York's only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford's takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous). Last year Oscar released a mixed CD “Beats” on Nervous Records and working with his Murk partner Ralph Falcon produced one of the undergrounds anthem of 2012 – Amame – which was released worldwide on Defected. He and Ralph also re-activated the seminal label Murk Records. Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it's in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I've felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it's the ultimate.”

So while I was there I got to sample the new Zeiss LRP scope. In fact, I have one in my possession. Then we spent an extra day with Theis with Hoplite Arms shooting their new rifle out to 2300+ Yards. The rifle is absolutely amazing. However the night before we had an Awesome dinner with the Squirrel Mafia. Then we took a direct flight to Texas to meet with Chris Rance and Chris Roberts and the CR2 crew at Iron Bridle. But the big surprise came from a Student in the class. If you remember the Seattle riots, the executive security officer who took the M4s from the Antifa rioters is here, Weapon Snatcher, yep that guy. USMC guys from 1/3, he is in the class, so we invited him on the podcast. Please welcome as special guest this week one of the hottest producer of the moment, Juany Bravo. Over the last few years, Juany Bravo has seen Beatport chart-topping releases on labels such as Saved Records, Kittball Records, Toolroom Records, Cr2, Stealth Records, Lapsus Music, Go Deeva Records, In The Loop Recordings, Sleazy G, Audiophile XXL, Dopewax Records, and Shanghaied, while scoring support from major musical taste makers and blogs, such as Mark Knight, Tube & Berger, Nic Fanciulli, Roger Sanchez, and Kenny Dope, to name a few.
