Danny Howells - Powershow / Stereodrama - Selador Very early support from Khen, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Spencer Brown, Quivver, Anthony Pappa, Jim Rivers, AFFKT, Timo Maas, and Terry Farley. Aaah, Danny Howells. How do we love thee? Let us count the ways. We love you for your mastery of the art of DJing – many shades, always nuance – yet cohesive, powerful, enthralling, unifying. We love how you take those touchstones of DJ craft, and effortlessly transfer them to the studio, delivering finally crafted tunes par excellence, unerringly hitting the bullseye time after time. We love how ‘Powershow' effortlessly fuses an ethereal, uplifting and other-worldly ambience with filthy machine funk. We love how ‘Stereodrama' does exactly what it says on the tin, soaring sounds, gorgeous grooviness and subtle peaks and troughs colliding with dramatic effect. We love that decades of looking for the perfect beat, forever opening yourself to new sonic possibilities, has so evidently been poured into these tunes like liquid gold. We love the way that you break the DJ mould, your head forever above the parapet as you speak up for social justice and animal rights. We love your endless collection of natty threads and headgear and frankly, are more than a tad envious of your finely chiselled cheekbones. And we love that once again you have entrusted Selador with some of your majestic musical missives. Alright, alright, we know… we'll get a room. Team Selador - Love is in the air. x

Founder of Boy's Own and Junior Boys Own and an active part of Defected sub-label Faith, Terry Farley is a bonafide house legend. Teaming up with XOYO and Music Box Radio resident Wade Teo, the duo recruit New York-based spoken word artist Kameelah Waheed for a party-starting house cut on Radio Slave's Rekids. Terry Farley and Wade Teo team up with Kameelah Waheed to release their new track ‘Why We Dance' on the hugely respected Rekids imprint. The release is joined with two varied remixes that also make their way onto Radio Slave's legendary label. Some Rekids alumni include Carl Cox, Ian Pooley, Mark Broom, Hybrasil, Commix, X-Coast and many more.Across the A-side, robust drums, rocking low end, and piano stabs combine to provide the perfect backdrop for Kameelah Waheed's infectious vocal. This jackin' house track is a cleverly crafted production with a catchy hook and pulsating groove throughout. On the flip, Farley and Teo deliver their ‘Lonely Dancer Remix' to kick off the B-side, adding subtle percussions and floating pads for a grooving rework. Rounding out the release, Farley recruits Kevin Swain for the collaborative ‘Angels Take Control' remix, with dubbed-out claps, menacing low-end combining for a heads-down closing track. TRUE HOUSE STORIES WITH FARLEY & HELLER INTERVIEW BY LENNY FONTANA PODCAST 025 (PART 2) Respected UK dance music producers and remixers, Terry Farley and Pete Heller initially found success in the UK in the early 90s. Londoner Terry Farley was a fan of Studio One reggae and ska before becoming involved with the London soul club scene during the 80s. Pete Heller grew up on the south coast of England and began his musical career by Djing in a Brighton discotheque, playing disco, hip-hop and house. After playing warm-up sets for Danny Rampling, Heller and Andrew Weatherall formed the Boy's Own collective, running a fanzine, Boy's Own club nights and eventually a record label - Junior Boy's Own. Farley and Heller's initial productions as a team with Hugo Nicholson were released as Bocca Juniors. Since then, they have remixed for many artists including Michael Jackson, Jamiroquai, Sunscreem, K-Klass, Simply Red, New Order, U2, Janet Jackson, Boy George, and the Pet Shop Boys. Their own productions have appeared under the name Fire Island and have been hugely popular on the club scene. As Fire Island, they covered Machine's 1979 classic ‘There But For The Grace Of God'. Their 1997 recording ‘Ultra Flava' was a huge hit in European clubs and Ibiza and eventually became a UK Top 40 hit when the vocals of Ultra Naté were added. In 1999, Heller's track ‘Big Love' was signed to Pete Tong's London Records and quickly became ubiquitous on European dancefloors (especially those in Ibiza) before entering the UK charts at number 12. Building on their reputation as excellent club DJs, they also mixed Late Night Sessions for the Ministry

In this week's episode, we welcome former Face editor Sheryl Garratt into RBP's Zoomworld to ask her about rave and club culture – and how we got from disco to acid house to 2020's quarantine raves. Sheryl discusses her newly-reissued/revised 1999 classic Adventures in Wonderland and looks back on her journey from the NME to The Observer. Mark, Barney & Jasper ask her about her seminal 1986 Face piece on Chicago's House scene – and about Ecstasy and 1988's "second summer of love". Clips from the week's new audio interview, a 2005 conversation between DJ History's Bill & Frank and Shoom/Boy's Own legend Terry Farley, provide the perfect springboard for further reminiscence of House music and the UK's ever-fecund club scene. Sheryl also pitches in on the week's Free On RBP feature about fellow Brummie Mike (The Streets) Skinner, whose classic track 'Weak Become Heroes' was arguably the greatest elegy for the rave era. We hear a clip of Skinner speaking to Gavin Martin in 2002 and celebrate that year's splendid Original Pirate Material album. Among the new RBP library additions considered are Hugh Nolan's Disc report on London's psychedelic temple the UFO club (1967), a slightly unlikely 1989 encounter between David Toop and Bakersfield country icon Buck Owens, and Chris Heath's hilarious 1997 Rolling Stone cover story on the Spice Girls. Jasper takes us out with observations on a pointless Tim Buckley tribute album (2000) and an interview with Public Service Broadcasting's amusingly-monikered J. 009: Terry Farley. Terry Farley is one of the founding fathers of the UK House music scene. Growing up as a Soulboy in West London and Slough in the 70s, Terry always had a passion for music and youth culture. Pouring this knowledge into early editions of the Boy's Own fanzine he ran, Terry found himself in possession of the perfect platform to commentate on the Acid House scene when this first blew up in 1988 and further expanded the brand across a record label as well as a series of legendary parties. Whether it's from behind the decks or from inside the studio, Terry has always been at the forefront of the many changes within the scene and in this episode is happy to discuss his long and varied career. Jim Z (real name James Hilan) is a tributary to the Brisbane underground music scene. His sortie into the world of electronic music begun in 2012, playing a blend of underground 90's hits and modern house. Since then, Jim's range of influences has broadened out to include funk & jazz, electro, techno on more recently, breakbeat music. We can say hand on heart that James has crafted his own DJ style which is very evident in his mixer work. He has a fantastic fader and filter control which brings the mix alive. Quickly and effortlessly switching between vinyl selections, it becomes quite clear that Jim Z is a skillful turntablist, someone who's committed time to his craft, so much so that he's supported the likes of Terry Farley, Mr. G, Mall Grab, Tama Sumo, Marcellus Pittman, Smallpeople, Francis Inferno Orchestra and others. Aside from DJ'ing, Jim Z has his own rave-inspired event series called Higher State which focuses on "...providing harder, faster, and more challenging dance sounds to Brisbane's underground scene". “‘Deep House’ - alongside ‘Brazil’ and ‘world cup’, they seem to be the most over-used two words of 2014. What is ‘Deep House’? Last year I played in Stockholm alongside a man who should know as he was there at its birth, Tyree Cooper. Tyree warmed up the room spinning mid-tempo, early 80s Disco or, as he put it 'House Music', stating 'it’s the music Frankie played before anyone had made a House record'. Four decades after the Warehouse in Chicago closed, Deep House now means everything from European 120BPM Tech House to UK House that ex-Grime kids now make and of course, 'Trad Deep House' like the American stalwarts still make. What we thought we would do is take what we like that’s representing out there. Music that is good for your soul, music that you can still feel during that 8am cab-of-shame drive home. We have picked some of Get Physical's deep moments and matched them up with some 90's classics like DJ Pierre’s seminal 'Jesus On My Mind' and what’s considered by many afficianados THE best Deep House record of that decade - Round Two's 'New Day'. We then dropped in some curveballs such as UK producer Moodymancs 'Paint Black', remixed of course by a godfather of Deep House, one Larry Heard, and Mark E's 'Bog Dance'. It’s old school meets Phuture classics. It’s Mike Dunn and M.A.N.D.Y.. It’s Frankie's 'Tears’ and Anja's 'Stay Quiet'. It’s HOUSE in all its glory.” – Terry Farley, 2014

I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs. We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days. All this seems pretty fitting as Junior Boys Own hosted their own event in London last night (according to the Guardian Guide, their first in 16 years) and much of the catalogue is now reissued through Defected, although I’ve tried to steer around some of those more obvious classics. Most of the tunes are from ’92 - ’95 so I’ll also upload this to the Classic Archive podcast. Apologies if you get duplicates.
