The Texas state House held a hearing on a bill that LGBTQ+ activists say would undermine education by eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion policies from public schools. State Representative Ron Reynolds, Equality Texas Communications Director Johnathan Gooch, Mandy Garcia of Texas AFT and a representative of Students Engaged in Advancing Texas (SEAT) have a plan of action (reported by Lucia Chappelle). Where is Andry Hernandez Romero? U.S. Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) is demanding that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem provide proof that the gay Venezuelan make-up artist abducted to a prison in El Salvador is still alive (Lucia Chappelle reports). And in NewsWrap: a nonbinary Brazilian can identify as gender neutral on their official government documents thanks to a historic decision by the Superior Court of Justice, the organizers of Pride in London, Birmingham Pride, Brighton Pride and Manchester Pride cite the lack of sufficient support for transgender people as the reason for banning political parties from participating in this year's parades, mass discharges of transgender service members from the U.S. armed forces are underway, Tennessee's transgender teachers and students can now be deadnamed and have their preferred pronouns ignored by school officials with no recourse, Florida's ban on drag shows is struck down by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Joe Boehnlein and Sarah Montague (produced by Brian DeShazor). Manchester Pride, a large-scale music event with huge headliners and a packed schedule filled with music, dance and drag performances, returned last weekend. The city was filled with colour and thousands of people turned up to celebrate in Gay Village. But this year, Manchester Pride also faced fresh criticism over its relationship with Booking.com, a key sponsor of the festival who have faced criticism for listing rooms in the occupied West Bank, and many, including performers, withdrew from attending the festival. The involvement of big corporate sponsors like Booking.com, and the direction that Pride has taken more broadly, becoming more like a festival than anything resembling its revolutionary roots, has raised a crucial question: should Pride be a party or a protest? Mollie sits down with our new editor, Shannon Keating, to discuss.Recommendations:Alt Pride Festival 2024, Platt Fields Market Garden, 7th and 8th September - tickets hereShould Manchester Pride be a party or a protest? Manchester Pride has been and gone, so it only seems appropriate to get someone from that part of the world on the pod today. In fact, Manchester Storm ice hockey star Zach Sullivan is someone we've been wanting to catch up with for a while – and now is the perfect time to do it. Zach opened up publicly about the fact he's bisexual back in 2020, and we actually spoke to him about it on the pod about it at the time. But a lot has changed in the time between now and then – including Zach surpassing more than 500 appearances in the Elite Ice Hockey League – so it's the perfect time for a catch up. And this is just a cracking conversation with Zach, where you realise how much has changed – in terms of Zach's confidence in who he is, his reflection on coming out, how he's helped other people through his decision, his career until now and what comes next... honestly, it's just full to the brim with so much great stuff! Zach is so laid-back, so considered, with a great dry sense of humour – he's someone we really like on a personal level, and we really hope you like this episode as much as we do. On our latest podcast, we chat about the episodes of Coronation Street shown in the UK between the 12th and the 16th August (Episodes #11,335 - 11,340) It's a big week for Toyah this week - not only does she have to deal with Nick's confession of love as she's recovering from major surgery, she's also roped into the whole blackmail plot with Rowan, who's demanding Nick pay him £20k by the end of the day - can't this poor girl catch a break? Meanwhile, the walls seem to be closing in on Joel - with both Dee-Dee and DS Swain starting to smell a rat, surely it can only be so long until he trips up and reveals his true colours? Also this week, Tyrone gets caught trying to get a DNA sample from Dorin, there's a new lodger at the Rovers and he's turning a few ladies' heads already, and Tracy makes a grand return to Weatherfield - and walks right into an argument with Cassie! Up next on the podcast, we chat about what Corrie related bits and pieces you can expect to see if you're heading to Manchester Pride this coming weekend, and after some listener feedback on recent storylines, we delve into a Kabin Extra segment where we try to dissect the big, spoilery news that's had Corrie fans' tongues wagging over the weekend. On our last edition of this Summer's Queer news updates on OUTCAST UK, we turn to Manchester Pride. Manchester Pride this year was without a doubt one of the most inclusive yet and saw entry prices seem to come down in price and some special access for lower income groups. This alongside a proudly diverse lineup headed by Danny Beard and Jodie Harsh. But it seems the scars of the bad PR of the last few years has left the organisation a little unsure of engaging with the media. Interview opportunities were notable scaled back for LGBTQ+ media. With the only notable broadcast interview of the CEO this time being more of a promo for just the events of the Big Weekend. But surely people deserve a bit more than just this? After initially contacting US regarding an interview with their CEO and some headliners, the PR people got a little upset with us for asking a couple of questions about charity funding plans going forward and a few more politically loaded questions about rights for LGBTQ+ people around the world and stopped answering our emails access to their artists and VIPs. Is Pride still a protest and charity fundraiser or has it changed into something else and how do you balance all these interests? --- ALSO on this episode -a Putin ally warns of Gay Ukrainian super soldiers! AND the Grindr survey that says a quarter of people are on the app to network. The boss of the company claims to have hired people he met on the app. THIS IS OUTCAST UK Graeme Smith is joined by the host of Virgin Radio Pride Daily and former Times Radio, BBC Five Live and LBC Radio newsreader Kevin McGrath for a roundup of the week's queer news stories. This World AIDS Day we're getting together with people from leading UK regional HIV organisations looking at charity and community and the role they have played in the response to the HIV pandemic. With the absence of support from society generally, a hostile media and the initial medical outlook so bleak, it became the job of the community to provide hope and emotional support at first. But some of the initial groups are still with us and going strong pushing back on stigma and providing upto date education to a world that seems to have its view of HIV firmly set in a different age. Graeme Smith chats to the people in charge at Thames Valley Positive Support in Berkshire and George House Trust in Manchester. Both vital lifelines for people living with HIV since 1985. We're talking about how U+U and prep have changed the game and how a huge number of HIV positive people have lived in fear of being criminalised even until recently. We're also talking about the rights of people living with HIV when it comes to getting tattoos. In an episode packed with queer history, old news reports, first hand accounts and some exceptionally raw and personal reflection. We're also hearing how Manchester Pride this year took a moment to reflect at the annual HIV vigil with the reading of poem This Quilted History, written and read at the event by Jay Mitra leading the candlelit reflection. It sounds even more poignant this world aids day. With thanks to Sarah Macadam the Chief Executive of Thames Valley Positive Support, Jessica Harding, deputy CEO at TVPS, The HIV Podcast, Darren Knight, the CEO of George House trust and to Jay Mitra. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/outcastuk/message
On our latest episode of the podcast, we discuss what happened in Coronation Street between the 29th August and the 2nd September (Episodes #10729 - 107340). This week, Stephen becomes increasingly desperate to find any source of income he can after Audrey announces she's drawn up a new will that doesn't feature him as a beneficiary. With his efforts to get funding for Sarah's Underworld venture off the ground hitting a dead end, he sets his sights on Jenny and the pub - will she fall for his charms, and, perhaps even more importantly, can he drive a wedge between her and dullard Leo? Also this week, Aadi and Kelly decide to sneak off to Gretna Green, Toyah and Griff plot to take down notorious polluter Nadeem Atallah and Mary recruits Wendy onto the cast of her play - but is randy Ken also making a play for his old flame? In The Kabin segment of the podcast, we see who from Corrie turned up at this year's Manchester Pride, and take a look at some newly uncovered plans for another small extension at the Corrie studios. We round off the podcast with some more of your fabulous feedback. Street Talk - 00:11:04 The Kabin - 02:19:14 Feedback - 02:32:43

The Boys went to Manchester Pride and it might have finished them off! Now they're telling the stories!
More than 150-thousand people are expected in Manchester today for the city's Pride parade - and obviously, we wanted to be part of it! So we decided to take the show to the heart of the city to record a special episode with four brilliant guests who happened to be in Manchester ahead of today's march. Olympic swimmer Dan Jervis, British wheelchair basketball star Laurie Williams, Scottish football referee Lloyd Wilson and rugby player Hannah Davis all join us for a cracking conversation about Pride, visibility, and being their authentic selves. It's honest and open and funny - and touches on everything from wedding planning to coming out to a first trip to Canal Street! It was brilliant to get so many folks around the table for a chat on such a special weekend, and we hope you love hearing this one. “Continuing a Pride that Manchester can be proud of” This week the city is celebrating Manchester Pride 2022. Across the weekend there will be the annual parade, vigil, parties and a new Human Rights rally in celebration of Manchester's LQBTQ+ community. This episode shines a light on Manchester Pride: the festival weekend, the people who bring it all together and the community that surrounds it. Host Lisa Morton will be finding out what it means to people in the city region as well as the work that has been done to refocus the event. You'll hear Pride CEO Mark Fletcher explain the values that have been driving this year's celebrations, how it supports Manchester charity LGBT Foundation and you'll hear from previous We Built This City guests on the place and families that LGBTQ+ people find in Manchester. ------ Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 26 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world. When did you last take part in a protest? Perhaps you signed a petition; joined a debate on social media; wrote to your MP or read an impassioned poem. In this episode Lemn is joined by Shami Chakrabarti to examine how campaigners have used language to further their aims throughout the centuries. Together, they listen to inspiring voices from the British Library Sound Archive, from leaders such as Nelson Mandela to campaigners fighting for LGBTQ rights, punk musicians and suffragettes such as Christabel Pankhurst. Described in The Times as "probably the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years," Shami Chakrabarti is a barrister and human rights activist, as well as Member of the House of Lords and former Director of advocacy organisation Liberty. In this episode of Our Community, I'm in the village of Hayfield in the high peaks of Derbyshire on the ninetieth anniversary weekend of the historic Kinder Mass Trespass. The physical and mental consolations of nature are one of life's great gifts but granting working class people access to the countryside has long been fraught with conflict. Ninety years ago members of the young communist league gathered at Kinder Scout here in Derbyshire, to highlight the fact that walkers were denied access to areas of open country. When the group reached the plateau of Kinder Scout, there were violent scuffles with gamekeepers. As a result, six ramblers were arrested. They received jail sentences ranging from two to six months for offences relating to violence involving the keepers.According to the Hayfield Kinder Trespass Group website, this act of civil disobedience was one of the most successful in British history. It arguably led to the passage of the National Parks legislation in 1949[8] and helped pave way for the establishment of the Pennine Way and other long-distance footpaths. Walkers' rights to travel through common land and uncultivated upland were eventually protected by the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CROW Act) of 2000. This is the first of three conversations recorded over the Kinder Mass Trespass 90th anniversary weekend in the High Peaks of Derbyshire in Hayfield village hall.I want to thank Joss Underwood from the Tent People, who organised a fantastic pop-up event on the village green in Hayfield and generously introduced me to today's guest; Helen Darby. Helen is a queer, non-binary poet from Manchester who lives in the High Peak. They often write about the interweaving of place, time, class and identity, and sometimes about internet dating. They have performed invited guest slots at Lancaster Spotlight, That's What She Said Manchester, Superbia for Manchester Pride, Manchester Museum, New Mills Festival, The Bronte Festival of Women's Writing, Stirred and She Grrrowls in Edinburgh Free Fringe, amongst others. Their poems have recently been published in The Broken Spine and the modernist magazines. In this recording, Helen delivers a beautiful rendition of their powerful poem; 1932 Kinder Scout · We talk about the importance of open spaces for leisure and how the relief of the countryside was vital for the mill factory workers around Manchester.· How celebrating and understanding historical events such as the Kinder Mass Trespass is vital to 'keeping the flame alive and fostering understanding of connection and context.· How socialist roots and collective action shape people. He is passionate about the queer community, embracing the ethos of https://www.manchesterpride.com/ (Manchester Pride) in the UK.
