Farmer Angus CEO Angus McIntosh speaks to Lester Kiewit about why he believes mass vaccination is not the solution to South Africa’s ongoing foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. With beef and dairy prices climbing and the disease now spreading into high-biosecurity piggeries, McIntosh challenges the national vaccination drive announced after the outbreak was declared a national disaster by Cyril Ramaphosa. He argues that weakened animal immune systems, intensive farming practices, and poor cattle husbandry lie at the heart of the crisis, rather than a lack of pharmaceutical intervention. McIntosh also outlines the alternative farming methods he uses, the precautions on his own farms, and why he believes healthy, well-managed cattle are more resilient to disease. White privilege has emerged at the forefront of conversations about race and equity, but what does it really mean when we consider it as a political frame? In this first episode of our series, we're diving deep into the multifaceted nature of white privilege, a term that not only reveals systemic inequalities but also challenges us to rethink our understanding of merit and fairness in society. The story of white privilege isn't new; it gained ground particularly in the late 20th century thanks to influential scholars like Peggy McIntosh. Her iconic 1988 essay, "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack," brilliantly illuminated how unearned advantages are often taken for granted by white individuals. Imagine starting a race with a ten-second head start—this metaphor perfectly encapsulates what McIntosh sought to unveil: the invisible systems that allow white individuals to advance more easily in society.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/racism-white-privilege-in-america--4473713/support.

The term "white privilege" has become a crucial part of conversations about race in America, but where did it all begin? Its rise to prominence can be traced back to 1988 when Wellesley College professor Peggy McIntosh published a groundbreaking essay, detailing 46 everyday advantages that white individuals experience, often without even realizing it. What's fascinating is that McIntosh wasn't just pointing fingers or assigning blame; instead, she was illuminating the often invisible barriers that prevent genuine equality. Then, as the discussion around race evolved, so did the concept of white privilege. Scholars like Cheryl Harris took the dialogue further in 1993 by presenting the idea of "whiteness as property." Think about that. Harris argued that being white in society confers not just societal standing but also social, economic, and legal privileges, functioning almost like a form of property. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/racism-white-privilege-in-america--4473713/support.

Unpacking White Privilege_ A Key to Understanding Systemic Inequality

Racism White Privilege In America

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 6, 2026 3:43 Transcription Available

Today, we're diving into a topic that can stir a lot of emotions but is vital to understanding our society: white privilege and how it contributes to systemic inequality. This isn't just about individual experiences; it's about the broader structures and systems that uphold these injustices. So grab your headphones, and let's unpack this together!First off, let's define what we mean by white privilege. Coined by scholar Peggy McIntosh in her groundbreaking essay back in 1989, white privilege refers to those unearned advantages that white individuals enjoy simply because of their race. It's like carrying around an invisible knapsack filled with benefits that others, especially people of color, do not have access to. McIntosh even outlined fifty examples of these privileges in her essay, painting a clear picture of how deeply embedded this concept is in our daily lives. As we dig deeper, let's take a look at some eye-opening statistics that truly highlight the stark disparities in our society. Did you know that white Americans have about ten times the wealth of Black Americans? Yes, that's right! Wealth disparity is not just a statistic; it translates into real-life challenges, including access to education and housing. Currently, about 74.5% of white households own homes, while the figure for Black households stands at a mere 44.1%. These numbers are more than just percentages; they represent families and futures that are being shaped by systemic inequalities.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/racism-white-privilege-in-america--4473713/support.

Send us a textOkay, dude… if you've ever had a doctor shrug and basically say, “Yeah, you're in perimenopause, good luck with that,” this episode is going to hit hard. My guest today, Amanda McIntosh, got that exact speech right at the moment when she was gaining weight, feeling constantly hungry, and low-key convinced her body was broken. Her social feeds were screaming hormones. Her doctor was like, get used to it. And Amanda? She honestly didn't feel like doing any of the things she was being told to do. Chocolate and chips were putting up a very convincing argument. But instead of spiraling into despair, Amanda did something kind of brilliant-slash-petty-slash-genius. She decided to follow a healthy living program perfectly just so she could go back to her doctor and say, “See? I did your boring advice and it does not work. Now fix me.”Except… plot twist… it did work.In this conversation, Amanda shares how she went from that perimenopause panic to feeling strong, capable, and dare I say joyful again. From eating vegetables like a goddamn champion to doing push-ups in sets of thirty and lifting her carry-on overhead without asking some random guy for help.We get into habit loops, chocolate negotiations, why “making it fun” felt like an insult at first and the surprisingly boring thing that changed everything. Spoiler: it is not hormones. It is vegetables. If you have ever felt like your body changed overnight and your willpower packed its bags and left, Amanda's story is going to give you hope, relief and maybe a little kick in the butt. What's Inside:How panic around perimenopause and the “it's your hormones” message kept Amanda stuck and what actually moved her forwardThe shockingly boring secret behind her massive transformationHow the MFA helped her ditch all-or-nothing thinking and build habits that actually stickWhy fun matters more than willpower and how she made healthy living feel doable instead of dreadfulIf you are nodding along to this and thinking, “Oh crap, this is me,” then dude, I want to hear about it. What is your version of feeling broken and what would it look like to feel powerful again? Not in some magical hormone hack way but in the real-life, choosing-yourself kind of way. The Montreal Experiments were one of the most disturbing mind-control programs ever carried out in North America — funded by the CIA, supported by the Canadian government, and disguised as cutting-edge psychiatric treatment. From drug-induced comas to extreme electroshock therapy and “psychic driving,” hundreds of innocent patients — including teenagers, young mothers, and people seeking help for mild anxiety — were used as unwitting test subjects. Many lost their memories, their identities, and entire pieces of their lives.https://www-bbc-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvgdngkxedzo.amphttps://thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/mkultrahttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10443815/WTF News-Farmer Pete pulls a gun in chicken argument https://www.newsweek.com/man-tries-shoot-people-argument-how-many-eggs-chickens-lay-11010758Crime News UpdateKayden McIntosh Sentenced for the murder of Cynthia Hoffman https://people.com/catfished-thinking-get-money-killing-teen-going-prison-11850972Join our squad! Episode 258: How did two new leaders turn angry customer calls into executive promises to earn customer trust and advocacy?  Charlon McIntosh, Chief Customer Operations Officer, and Melissa Pint, Chief Digital Information Officer, both joined Frontier Communications on the same day in 2021.  At the time, Frontier faced both bankruptcy and a reputation crisis: Millions of customer complaint calls were pouring in, with only one way to reach the company. Charlon and Melissa inherited a brand that customers didn't trust. To fix it, they built a system where complaints trigger commitments, leaders face weekly scrutiny, and new product and feature launches aren't approved until they are absolutely ready. "Our CEO, Nick Jeffery, outlined a very simple four-point strategy for us," says Charlon. "Build fiber, sell fiber, improve the customer experience, and improve our operational efficiency." In alignment with these goals, Frontier treated millions of monthly calls as a focus group, and started by redesigning its messy billing process. They used data on call reasons and complaint volumes to guide a weekly, two-hour "earning customer loyalty" meeting across departments. One Friday at a time, owners identified fixes, rather than providing chest-beating updates.  Charlon and Melissa's collaborative relationship is an enviable example of cross-functional teamwork. They finish each other's sentences and share a single scorecard. "There is no IT strategy," Melissa says. "There is only the business strategy." "And customers tell us if it worked," adds Charlon. A digital-first agenda became the default. Customers now use chatbots for routine tasks, with a one-tap handoff to a person. Progress runs on shared operations and IT metrics, with the CEO actively observing from the customers' viewpoint, even using customer tools himself, to identify adjustments they could implement in real time.  "We were able to shift adoption from nearly a hundred percent of our transactions being handled in a call center to today, where less than 20% of our interactions are assisted between chat and phone calls," Charlon says. "The point isn't deflection. It's a faster, better answer." Guests: Charlon McIntosh, Chief Customer Operations Officer, Frontier Communications, and Melissa Pint, Chief Digital Information Officer, Frontier Communications Host: Rob Markey, Partner, Bain & Company Give us feedback: Customer Confidential Podcast Feedback Send us a note: Contact Rob Time-Stamped Topics [00:02:00] Frontier's turnaround mandate and four-point strategy [00:05:00] How experience assurance sets standards and shapes launches [00:07:00] How call volume helps spot customer experience opportunities [00:09:00] How a weekly  "earning customer loyalty" forum drives executive action  [00:10:00] Frontier's prioritization of billing and communications cleanup [00:18:00] How digital channels rapidly shift interactions [00:23:00] How their chatbot resolves most chats by understanding intent [00:27:00] Diving into results experienced thus far and record-low churn [00:39:00] Issuing a no-go on a marquee launch to prioritize quality [00:45:00] Looking ahead to the future of data and AI  Notable Quotes [00:08] "The interactions with our customers every day in our contact channels, those are like mini focus groups. They're telling us what's confusing, what's broken, what we've done wrong, where they need help, and where they need additional support. We used the reasons customers were calling as our initial guide to say what's happening." [10:00]  "As a care leader, I have the data. I can tell my partners across the organization where we are making poor decisions and where we have low quality. It's the ability to get them to listen to me. That's what makes the difference in my team's success and our ability to improve the customer experience." [15:00]  "As a turnaround company, since we did need to turn around pretty quickly, we did not have the luxury of completely changing core legacy backend systems. … Our strategy was to create a layer on top of them that would bring systems together."  [18:00] "A digital-first strategy means things are going to start being automated, and you put things in your customer's hands; you're giving more power to your users to have automated tasks. That drives different traffic in your backend systems—different traffic patterns—that backend systems need to accommodate."
