Mick and Jen are on news duty this week, talking cynical steps – or is it honourable intentions? – as social media companies try to get to grips with the Online Safety Act. Elsewhere, there are smiling faces aplenty outside Strangeways, as the Labour Government grapples with its inherited crumbling prison system. Thank the gods of whimsy that Paddington Bear is on hand to cheer us all up. Not Jen, though. He makes her cry. Also, there's contraceptive chaos in Sexism of the Week, and some baffling sponsorship in Jenny Off the Blocks. Meanwhile the boss, Sarah Millican, is back for our £5 and above Patreon subscribers, offering some light relief around the gendered use of language. In April 1990, one of the most notorious and violent prison uprisings in British history erupted at Strangeways Prison in Manchester. What began as a protest quickly spiralled into a full-blown riot, as prisoners seized control of the facility, venting their anger over brutal conditions and overcrowding. For 25 days, the world watched in shock as inmates set fires, battled guards, and took to the roof in defiance. The uprising left one inmate and prison officer dead, hundreds injured, and the prison in ruins, forcing a nationwide re-examination of the UK prison system. **This episode features Megan and Neil from Mortal Musings telling me (and you) the story of the riot. Then after 1881 when the Tsar was assassinated, the Jews were unfairly blamed and there were many violent pogroms. Thousands fled to America and Western Europe to escape. For many English Jews this is their family's story. Their ancestors mainly went to the East End of London. But several thousand settled in northern cities such as Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. The Jewish garment industry of the north went on to change the landscape of the British high street. Brands like Marks and Spencer (set up in Leeds Market), Burtons and Moss Brothers were part of the warp and the weft of twentieth century retailing.
Is there any natural phenomenon that truly scares you? Maybe a thunderstorm, a flood or a tornado? How about something much less common but pretty real: spider rain! Yup! It may rain spiders in some places of our planet. And after it happens, the whole ground is covered with spider web like a white carpet. There're many weird places on Earth where really strange things can happen. For example, a sleeping town - people fall asleep there without any particular reasons and their sleep may last long. Another place is a city where no boys are born and girls truly rule there. Throughout the book of Acts there's a pattern of demonstrations of the supernatural bringing people's attention to Jesus and the gospel message. In the final chapter of the series, God uses a shipwreck, a snake bite, and countless healings from fatal sickness on the island of Malta, in order to break through to the Maltese toward belief and repentance. God used a variety of strange ways to capture the attention of people in the 1st century Mediterranean region—how can you ask God to demonstrate his supernatural power and presence to people in your community today?

Key historic and cultural events. 2) Background to the plot and any links to Fleming's personal experiences. 3) The U.K.'s first edition cover art. 4) The plot. 5) Locations 6) Bond's character development. 7) The Villain. 8) La femme fatale. 9) The supporting cast. 10) The branding. 11) Key set pieces and the best chapters. 12) Critical reception We will not be referring to or discussing the 007 movies. We will only be referencing previous books rather than those published in the future - as if we are experiencing the work of Fleming for the first time.
Neil 'Sam' Samworth spent 11 years as a prison officer at HMP Manchester - better known as Strangeways, one of Britain's most notorious jails. Building rapport with the men incarcerated there, he prided himself on de-escalating violent and threatening situations; an approach becoming increasingly impossible as the prison service churns through staff. In this interview with Olly, he confronts corruption; considers the toll his job took on his mental and physical health; and explains why, in his view, officer training is inadequate for purpose… Neil's books, ‘Strangeways: A Prison Officer's Story' and ‘Strangeways Unlocked' are out now. His video series, ‘Real Porridge with Sam Samworth' is on YouTube. — Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart tries his hand at white labelling and drop-shipping. Using Chinese wholesalers Taobao and AliExpress, can he stumble upon the next big consumer sensation? How do Western brands ‘add value', ensure decent customer service and client satisfaction when they're flogging goods they've never even SEEN? I was happy to finally connect with John Boles to talk about his impressive post-rock project, Align in Time! In our conversation, we discuss how he creates these elaborate instrumentals by himself, why that usually means long gaps between albums, doing some recording at Strangeways in PVD back in the day, and what people can expect from Align in Time's first show in 10 years. Plus, he teases a little more about some fun stuff he's got planned for the future! Make sure to catch Align in Time with Secret Gardens, Circus Trees, and Strip Mall at Fete on Saturday, November 12, 2022!!! My guest today is Neil "Sam" Samworth, former UK prison officer and the author of Strangeways – A Prison Officer's Story. Sam spent eleven years working as a prison officer in HMP Manchester, a prison also known as Strangeways. His book Strangeways is a shocking and at times darkly funny account of life in a high-security prison. Sam tackles cell fires and self-harmers and goes head to head with some of the most dangerous men in the country. We spend time discussing the differences and the common ground between the US and UK prison systems. We talk about it the good, the bad, and the ugly, including his personal struggle with PTSD.Real Porridge with Sam Samworth https://www.youtube.com/c/RealPorridgePodcastStrangeways: A Prison Officers StoryStrangeways Unlocked: The Shocking Truth about Life Behind Bars Support the show
This week is another legendary producer, the fantastic Stephen Street! Stephen first came to prominence when he engineered those classic Smiths album like Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead. He ultimately produced the Strangeways, Here We Come album, which led to a partnership with Morrissey on his solo debut. Stephen is also best known for his work with Blur and producing Parklife, one of the ultimate British albums of the modern era. He's also had long collaborations with the Cranberries and the Kaiser Chiefs. We also get in albums he's done with New Order, the Psychedelic Furs, Suede, and much more. Stephen's talent has defined a sound specific to British alternative guitar pop of the 80s and 90s. Here's his story! www.stephenstreet.audio www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
