With warfare seemingly creeping up on us – because governments keep starting them – it seemed like a good idea to speak to Ed Wall, Professor of Cities and Landscapes at the University of Greenwich, about his book Architecture for Warfare: How Corporations Profit from Destruction and Reconstruction, published by Jovis in December last year. It's difficult to know what to say about this, beyond what Professor Wall describes in the book: there is a seam of architectural practice which makes the infrastructure of war and reconstruction, and makes a good deal of good business whilst doing it. Isn't it better, one might ask, that architects, with their designerly imaginations, their theories and lovely drafting skills, and their spatial-technical and ecological competencies, are involved in this sort of stuff? At least then it'll have passive ventilation.Jeremy Bentham – not an architect – drew the panopticon in the Eighteenth Century and in so doing arguably more-or-less defined the modernist city. The great Alfred - Waterhouse designed Strangeways in the 19th, and that's pretty lit. Then there was Speer, of course, in the Twentieth. So the connection isn't new. It still feels odd, though, as Ed explains…Ed can be found at work, on Instagram and LinkedIn. The book is linked above.+Music credits: Bruno Gillick  #ArchitectureForWarfare #DesignEthics #UrbanReconstruction

1990 does not begin quietly. London burns during the Poll Tax riots. Strangeways prison erupts in Manchester. Margaret Thatcher stands outside Downing Street for the last time. Britain is shifting politically, socially and culturally. At the very same moment, Madchester explodes into the mainstream. The Happy Mondays release Step On as smoke rises over the city. Ecstasy fuels a new chemical confidence. Indie and rave collide. What began in dark rooms is now national news. Then comes an unlikely coronation. The Football Association asks New Order to write England's 1990 World Cup anthem. World in Motion goes to number one and Manchester owns the summer. At Glastonbury, The Happy Mondays arrive with a thousand mates and a bootleg pass printer. In the charts, The Inspiral Carpets and The Charlatans surge forward. And in Widnes, on a former chemical works surrounded by factories and wind, tens of thousands gather for Spike Island. The Stone Roses take the stage as fireworks burst overhead. The sound system falters. The crew threaten to strike. The wind shifts…. but it barely matters. This is the peak. The moment Madchester becomes too big to contain.Episode 5 of The Rise and Fall of Madchester tells the story of the year politics, football, rave and pop culture collided.A BBC Audio Production.

Creating strong passwords is a modern headache. Simple ones are easy to hack. Complex ones are hard to remember. And using the same password everywhere is just asking for trouble. This episode begins with a smarter, practical strategy for creating passwords that are both secure and memorable. Source: Sid Kirchheimer, author of Scam-Proof Your Life (https://amzn.to/3SeWhA5) Men and women differ in ways that go far beyond the obvious — and some of the most fascinating differences rarely get discussed. From how men and women hear sound differently, to why women tend to live longer, to how hormones influence behavior in surprisingly specific ways, these differences are deeply rooted in biology and evolution. Cat Bohannon joins me to explain what science really shows. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and is author of Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution (https://amzn.to/3SgBUlO). Rats, insects, bees, deer, spiders — the world is full of creatures we label as “pests.” But what actually makes an animal a pest? And why do humans respond to some species with fear, anger, or extermination, while others get sympathy or protection? Bethany Brookshire explains how humans often create pests through our own behavior, and what our reactions reveal about us. She's an award-winning science writer and author of Pests: How Humans Create Animal Villains (https://amzn.to/3vzlpZt) And finally, most drivers never adjust their car's headrest — or even know how it should be positioned. In a crash, that small oversight can make a big difference. We wrap up with how to set your headrest properly to reduce the risk of whiplash and neck injury. https://www.adlergiersch.com/provider-blog/how-to-properly-adjust-your-headrest-to-prevent-whiplash/ Learn more about your ad choices. This system highlights God's compassion and wisdom, offering a fresh start.Slavery in Ancient Israel:Different from the modern understanding of slavery.Old Testament slavery in Israel was often a result of debt or crime.Slaves worked for a maximum of six years before being set free. The system provided protections and aimed to avoid oppression.Release from Slavery (Deuteronomy 15:12-23):Hebrew slaves were to be freed in the seventh year of service.Owners were instructed not to send freed slaves away empty-handed but to provide them with resources. This ensured freed individuals could establish a new life, reflecting God's generosity and desire for social equity.God's Example of Redemption:Israelites were reminded of their own history as slaves in Egypt and God's redemption. They were called to emulate God's example of care and provision.Generosity and Fairness:Releasing slaves and providing for them was a principle that invited God's blessing.Giving generously, even when counterintuitive, aligns with God's principles.Sanctification of Firstborn Animals (Deuteronomy 15:19-23):Firstborn animals were to be dedicated to God, not used for personal gain. This act recognized God's provision and reinforced dependence on Him.Practical Applications:Living Out God's Love:Release others from metaphorical "debts" and offer forgiveness.Extend grace and support to those in need, reflecting God's heart for justice and compassion.Generosity and Provision:Embrace a lifestyle of giving the best of our resources—time, talents, and finances—to God.Trust in God's promise to bless those who give generously.Modern Parallels:Consider voluntary commitments in modern contexts, like military service or professional sports, to understand ancient servitude.Apply the principles of justice and generosity in contemporary settings.Blessings Through Generosity:Generous actions are a seed sown into God's fertile ground, promising a return of grace and provision. The principle of sowing and reaping is echoed in the New Testament (2 Corinthians 9:6-8, Philippians 4:15-19).Conclusion:DeuteronGlobal Revival Blast Ushering in a powerful wave of spiritual awakening, practical insights and transformation.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showJeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

Then after 1881 when the Tsar was assassinated, the Jews were unfairly blamed and there were many violent pogroms. Thousands fled to America and Western Europe to escape. For many English Jews this is their family's story. Their ancestors mainly went to the East End of London. But several thousand settled in northern cities such as Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. The Jewish garment industry of the north went on to change the landscape of the British high street. Brands like Marks and Spencer (set up in Leeds Market), Burtons and Moss Brothers were part of the warp and the weft of twentieth century retailing.

Is there any natural phenomenon that truly scares you? Maybe a thunderstorm, a flood or a tornado? How about something much less common but pretty real: spider rain! Yup! It may rain spiders in some places of our planet. And after it happens, the whole ground is covered with spider web like a white carpet. There're many weird places on Earth where really strange things can happen. For example, a sleeping town - people fall asleep there without any particular reasons and their sleep may last long. Another place is a city where no boys are born and girls truly rule there.  Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook:   / brightside   Instagram:   / brightgram   5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC Stock materials (photos, footages and other): https://www.depositphotos.com https://www.shutterstock.com https://www.eastnews.ru ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/ Learn more about your ad choices. Throughout the book of Acts there's a pattern of demonstrations of the supernatural bringing people's attention to Jesus and the gospel message. In the final chapter of the series, God uses a shipwreck, a snake bite, and countless healings from fatal sickness on the island of Malta, in order to break through to the Maltese toward belief and repentance. God used a variety of strange ways to capture the attention of people in the 1st century Mediterranean region—how can you ask God to demonstrate his supernatural power and presence to people in your community today?

Neil 'Sam' Samworth spent 11 years as a prison officer at HMP Manchester - better known as Strangeways, one of Britain's most notorious jails. Building rapport with the men incarcerated there, he prided himself on de-escalating violent and threatening situations; an approach becoming increasingly impossible as the prison service churns through staff. In this interview with Olly, he confronts corruption; considers the toll his job took on his mental and physical health; and explains why, in his view, officer training is inadequate for purpose… Neil's books, ‘Strangeways: A Prison Officer's Story' and ‘Strangeways Unlocked' are out now. His video series, ‘Real Porridge with Sam Samworth' is on YouTube. — Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart tries his hand at white labelling and drop-shipping. Using Chinese wholesalers Taobao and AliExpress, can he stumble upon the next big consumer sensation? How do Western brands ‘add value', ensure decent customer service and client satisfaction when they're flogging goods they've never even SEEN? If you run a small business making stuff… we'd love to hear from you for our Christmas Collab! Drop us a line using the Feedback form. — Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox runs through Plenty of Fish's dating trends for 2023, from ‘bae realing' to ‘eco-dumping' - is it time for online courtship to enter a ‘sincerer era'? Plus, it's No-Nut November; when members of the NoFap movement encourage one another to abstain from masturbation for an entire month… Are there any health benefits to taking part? Does the original study that kicked off the NoFap movement bare scrutiny? Alix dives deep into the manosphere to discover more. — Finally, our record of the month is the Jungle-produced single from Poppy Ajudha - the turbo-charged and rebellious ‘NO!' (It isn't about No-Nut November, apparently). — This episode is sponsored by: • Wine52, the wine discovery club that sends delicious wine to your door from a different country each month.
