Data scientist and head of research at Our World in Data, Hannah Ritchie, says her 'radically hopeful' new book that's getting a lot of press, "Not the End of the World: How We Can be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet," offers a pathway to solving the multiple environmental crises our world faces.   However, co-host Rachel Donald finds that key geopolitical challenges are left unaddressed by the book, leaving out important frameworks such as the planetary boundaries, and attempts to ride an "apolitical" line on solutions that inherently need policy shifts in order to be effectively implemented.   In this podcast interview, Donald challenges Ritchie on these questions and more. To hear specific topics discussed, refer to the chapter marks noted below.   Related reading at Mongabay:   The nine boundaries humanity must respect to keep the planet habitable   Mongabay Series: Planetary Boundaries   Please invite your friends to subscribe to the Mongabay Newscast wherever they get podcasts, from Apple to Spotify, or download our free app in the Apple Store or Google Store to get access to our latest episodes at your fingertips.   If you enjoy the Newscast, please visit www.patreon.com/mongabay to pledge a dollar or more to keep the show growing, Mongabay is a nonprofit media outlet and all support helps!   See all our latest news from nature's frontline at Mongabay's homepage: news.mongabay.com or find and follow Mongabay on all the social media platforms.   Episode artwork by Pawel Czerwinski via Unsplash.   --- Timecodes:  (00:00:00) - Introduction (00:03:57) - Renewable Energy and Political Will (00:07:06) - Realism of Tech Solutions  (00:09:03) - Degrowth & Decoupling (00:17:33) - Doomerism, Inequality & Politics (00:28:45) - How does a transition happen?  (00:36:51) - Hannah defends terminology used in the book (00:44:58) - Deforestation (00:53:11) - Our World In Data & Bias (01:06:19) - Mike & Rachel post-chat  (01:26:19) - Credits

Photo by Pawel Czerwinski on Unsplash首先第一个技巧就是找到简洁的背景。

Phew! Well, we're back. We hope you enjoyed the recommedations we offered last week. While we're on the subject, do let us know if you have any tips on what we should all be listening to (as well as artchatter of course!). So, thiiiiiis week, Karen and I are chattering on the back of taking part in an arts trail in Bristol. Good lawwwd our (my!) insecurities rose to the fore, (the smack of imposter syndrome hit hard and OMG everyone else is soooo talented!) and we really had to take it one step at a time and embrace the support of friends (old and new). This week on the show, Libby Davies speaks to Medea Benjamin, co-founder of women-led peace group Code Pink. Code Pink is a grassroots NGO with an anti-war mandate. The goal of Code Pink is to divest from the “war machine” and from companies that derive their profits from U.S. military interventions, the global arms trade, and the militarization in the streets.  Benjamin sits down with Davies to talk about the inception of the NGO back in 2002 and looking for a non-military solution to end Russia's occupation in Ukraine.  Benjamin says: “It is so difficult to cut through this incredible propaganda machine; now the call is we have to make sure Ukraine wins this war. As if there is any winning in this war.”  Upcoming news  Our next Off the Hill is right around the corner: On Tuesday, June 7 at 7:30pm ET join us for Off the Hill: Hot summer in the West.  With the Alberta political scene in upheaval with the departure of the current (disgraced) premier and the increasingly vitriolic conservative leadership race federally, what can we expect to see unfold in Alberta, in Ottawa, what will the impact be on the political scene overall? Turning Towards Life - a Thirdspace podcast

Whenever we come to ‘conclusions' about ourselves or one another  we run the risk of missing our marvellous multiplicity - the way we can be both gentle and wild, curious and assertive, narrow and wide, afraid and courageous. There's an inclusiveness and dignity that comes quite naturally when we see one another's complexity, and we see it in ourselves, and when we learn to trust our own capacity to turn towards, to be with, to welcome that very complexity as we live alongside one another, love one another, work together on projects and commitments that matter to us. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about how we might learn to include more of ourselves and others and, in doing so, undo the fear and certainty about one another that keeps us far apart, hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website, and you can also watch and listen on Instagram, YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify.
