La policía peruana incautó la semana pasada cuatro toneladas de mercurio procedentes de México con destino a Bolivia. Esta operación representa un duro golpe a las organizaciones criminales vinculadas a la minería ilegal de oro, las cuales utilizan el mercurio para separar el metal precioso de los sedimentos. El cargamento ilícito fue detectado gracias al uso de equipos tecnológicos especializados, los cuales permitieron corroborar que el mercurio se encontraba adherido en las 20 toneladas de piedra molida localizadas dentro de un contenedor en el puerto del Callao. Así lo comunicó la Superintendencia Nacional de Aduanas y de Administración Tributaria (Sunat). Luis Fernández, especialista en contaminación por mercurio de la Universidad Wake Forest en Carolina del Norte, explica las razones por las cuales este metal tóxico es utilizado en la minería informal. Fernández explica que primero hay que entender que hay dos formas para refinar el oro. Las grandes empresas emplean procesos industriales que requieren el uso de cianuro. Esta sustancia química, que posee un rendimiento del 97 %, requiere muchos controles y un proceso muy complejo, ya que es mortal para el ser humano. En cambio, los grupos más pequeños que operan en la minería informal emplean el mercurio, que no necesita de procesos ni controles tan rigurosos. El especialista destaca que el rendimiento del mercurio también es más bajo, del 30 o 35 %, ya que estas personas emplean una tecnología de hasta 100 años de antigüedad. "Estos grupos pueden llegar a producir entre 10 y 100 gramos de mercurio al día, cuyo valor es muy alto", aclara Fernández. El mercurio es ampliamente utilizado por la minería ilegal. Pero está causando daños profundos en el medio ambiente y en la salud humana. El biólogo Luis Fernández, de la Universidad Wake Forest de Carolina del Norte, considera que "es muy probable que estemos envenenando la biodiversidad amazónica. Estamos viendo concentraciones de mercurio en murciélagos, aves, tortugas, aire y agua. Estamos viendo que muchos pescados también están contaminaos, con efectos en el sistema nervioso de niños y mujeres embarazadas", que viven las ciudades amazónicas, constata Luis Fernández, que ha realizado estudios de monitoreo de la contaminación por mercurio. Los expertos relacionan la proliferación de la minería ilícita con el aumento de la delincuencia y el crimen organizado. Noam López Villanes, politólogo y profesor en la Universidad de Ingeniería en Lima, pone de ejemplo el caso de los "Pulpos", una banda criminal que fue contratada por la explotación minera de la Sierra de la libertad.  "Durante unos meses cumplió su rol, pero eran prácticamente criminales", explica el politólogo. Este cuenta que tras aprender el negocio, acabaron con la vida de quienes los contrataron para hacerse con el control. "Aprendieron bastante como para empezar a operar y llevar a cabo la extracción, el proceso de refinamiento y transporte, ya que conocen también el territorio", señala López Villanes. Las autoridades peruanas aseguran que esta incautación de mercurio permitió identificar a una presunta red internacional de tráfico ilícito de este metal que opera en México, Perú, Colombia y Bolivia.
