Today we have a few tools to peak at. One allows you to record your podcast or go live, the other allows you to add your Blab.im sessions to your Wordpress website, Ray Edwards will teach you how to write better pages, and the last one allows you to book guests. Spreaker Studio For Windows and Mac Spreaker has been around a while, and if you are looking to do live streaming this is a great platform. They also are great if you don't want to go live. Their new Spreaker Studio software enables them to move away from the Web Based version they had before that relied on flash technology (which was not compatible with iPads, iPhones, etc). They have had Spreaker Studio apps for a while (also impressive) and now there are desktop versions to go along. Connect More Than One USB Microphone With EASE. This has been a problem that wasn't easy to solve in the past. Now if you have multiple hosts with two USB microphones you can easily connect up to three USB microphones into ONE computer. It's pretty amazing and easy to setup. It also integrates with Skype. This takes adding some additional software, but it takes just a few minutes and it worked like a charm. The best part is there is plenty of documentation so you don't have to guess what to do. You can create playlists (great for people doing podcasts of music), you can fade from one song to the next, there are buttons that you can assign sound effects to (again with plenty of documentation and tutorials). If you are person who does their show live, you also have a chat system right in the software. The only thing you need is a Spreaker account to get it to fly.You can get a free month of spreaker media hosting using the coupon code sopfree. Simple Live Press Blab Automation Tool Right now Blab.im is HOT. This is a FREE platform that makes it super easy to create a live show and have guests pop in and out. It's new and in beta, but it has promise. Hani from Simple Podcast Press (a great plugin for podcasters looking to build their e-mail list) has come up with an easy way to have your videos from Blab.im import into your Wordpress site. You can set it so you have to approve them before they are put on your website or have them automatically posted. You can add buttons again to grow your email list, your followers on blab, and more. The best thing is Hani. He is open to suggestions as the plugin has been out less than a week. My request would be to allow me to replace the blab.im video with a YouTube version later (to build my views on YouTube). For more information go to www.simplelivepress.com Here is a quick video I created showing off how easy it is. Bookly Appointlet Plugin There are tons of services like Appointlet, and Schedule Once for managing bookings. Most of these have a monthly fee (around $10). I discovered the Bookly plugin and it is super powerful. It ties in with you Google Calendar, and you can control every. This includes the color, your services, your staff, you payment options, your hours of availability, holidays and more. Here is a quick video Ray Edward Copyrighting Course I'm a HUGE Ray Edwards fan, and he is giving away a ton of free content on how to write better text on your blog. This could be to grow your business, or to grow your audience. He is a MASTER, and I always walk away feeling smarter after listening to him. To check out Ray's free tutorials go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/rayedwards Launching With Multiple Episodes Does Not Automatically Equal Downloads There are people on the Internet who are saying "If you launch with 8 episodes (or 3, or 5) you get 8 downloads when someone subscribes. This is absolutely false. Once a person is subscribed, they need to go into the Podcasts App (or iTunes or Overcast.fm) and manually download you back catalog. As podcasting gets hotter and hotter, there will be more people jumping into the space that may not giving great advice. Interview With Hanah From PodClear/Blab.im Speaking of Blab, they recently purchased Podclear.com and today we get some behind the scenes insight into Blab from Hanah. Today we are JLD and Blab Free (things we keep talking about each week - We love them both, but we are mixing in some new stuff). Blab Purchases PodClearDave had some issues using Podclear in the past. We are assuming its the coding that was purchased. Podclear was saying they could have up to 9 people at the same time and you would get 9 separate files and one combined. This should be interesting. It is nice that this might put some pressure on Google Hangouts. At this point, podclear is shut down. We are all in "wait and see mode."  Podcast App Still Not Working... 7:10 We are really surprised that the new version of the Apple Podcasts App is still not working.... We all agree Overcast is a great alternative. The way it syncs across different phone/iPad. When You Live at 100% 11:15 Life is tough when you live at your peak performance. There is no room for life to throw you any curve balls. When you are in this type of situation everything has to go right. Dave spoke at a local group on Thursday and it backed up his entire week.  Cut out things that do not move you toward your goals.  Keep everything organized so you don't spend time looking for stuff. Jim does a monthly check of all his systems.  It might be more expensive as you need things to work right the first time. Dave explains how he will not unplug his recorder any more. He will use his second recorder. Resist the urge to set a second podcast. Dave explains how he might be featured on the Local News for International Podcast Day. 19:45 Camera Adapters and the ATR2100 The Camera Kit from Apple allows you to plug the microphone in via USB and right into you iPad or iPhone Social Media Tools 21:19 Kim from onthetablepodcasts.com wants to know what we are using for Social Media.  ww.bufferapp.com www.teriod.com Clammr.com Tweetjukebox.com Socialbro.com crowdfireapp.com Cutting Back On Your Shows 28:49 Dave talks about how its getting harder to find content for his Weekly Web Tools podcast and he is contemplating shutting it down.  Hosting Suggestions? 32:09 Kim is having issues with Hostgator (which Dave loves their service, you can save 25% using the coupon podcastcoach a www.schoolofpodcasting.com/hosting )  Kim is releasing a podcast with a certain amount of episodes and then it will stop. Should I release them all at once?  Dave feel you should roll them out over time. There is no way that everyone will go back and listen to every episode and with that in mind - episode 1 gets ignored.  As Kim knows what will be in the next episode she can tease next week's show at the end of each episode. This is a tip from the Podcast Talent Coach show. Intro and Outro Music 39:21 You can get professional intros created at Music Radio Creative. You want the music to fit the content and/or the host. You can find music at Audio Jungle and make your own. Don't use illegal music. Jim has contacted local musicians to have music crated.   What About a Daily Show? 42:39 The bottom line to any schedule is bringing value.  You can publish at whatever schedule you want.  Getting Behind in Listening 45:10 Keep in mind not everyone can keep up with that show, they feel guilty, and the unsubscribe. As long as the show delivers value, I will listen if I'm weeks behind.  The Old Salesmen Trick 48:30 Which one works better for you? This can be helpful when trying to schedule an interview. You offer multiple days. This helps get "none" off the table. Dave uses Appointlet . Another free option is Calendly. Whatever you use time zones can be a frequent issue. I like to have a tool that automatically reminds my guests.  Launching on a Specific Day 52:30 People want to launch on International Podcast Day. Keep in mind you have no control over how long it takes to get listed in iTunes. It's best to get it into iTunes and the other directories, and then announce it on a certain day. Many musicians do this, they wait until the CD is in their hand to do a CD release program.  Jim is Launching a Three Minute Podcast 53:48 Jim explains the fun of launching a new three minute show and working out the kinks. Website Hosting Issues [spp-timestamp time="1:48"] Dave has been with Hostgator.com forever (you can get 25% off using the coupon code " podcastcoach " ). He loves their support, but lately it seems like he is having more and more issues. He is thinking of moving the School of Podcasting to WPEngine.com before he does jim and Dave talk about some optional website hosting companies like Maplegrove Partners. Clammr Dicusssion with Daniel J Lewis. Daniel is enjoying sharing other content, consuming other content (without subscribing to the show), as well as sharing his own content. Daniel is from the Audacity to Podcast What do you think of doing a show that would be super short like 20 seconds long. A short podcast makes you get to the point. [spp-timestamp time="10:45"] Is there a difference between a www.askthepodcastcoach.com and just askthepodcastcoach.com (looks like a caching issue - and it was). The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show. Dave, Jim and Daniel talk about working with smaller companies. [spp-timestamp time="17:40"] Do something nice for someone else Dave contributed to Kathy Kelly's book about Autism. Kathy successfully raised Nine thousand dollars towards to publishing of her book. Small Company Discussion (Continued) [spp-timestamp time="20:10"] The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show. It will also make a list of your past show (coming in the future) and you can also change the color of the player. Workign with smaller companies that can pivot and change quickly unlike a bigger company that has to go through a committee.   Podbean Update - Now Available with a Redirect [spp-timestamp time="25:45"] Dave is confused by their front page, and it turns out they do have a way to redirect your show podcast RSS feed. They do have support (I had to use them once when my downloads stopped working for no reason). Podcasts.com kind of dodged the question to a yes/no question. Podcasts.com came on the scene recently so I sent them: 1. How do you make money (business plan). A: Some of the podcasts have ads on their searchable directory index page on Podcasts.com page. Those ads pay for the costs. 2. Do you change my mp3 file name? 3. Do you change my mp3 ID# tags? 4. Do you change the bit rate of my show (stereo/mono/bit rate) A: 2 – 4 – Those are all part of our management portal. These are yes no questions, and when you don’t answer them I assume the worst.  5. Do you supply an RSS redirect in the event I don’t want to use your service. A: We do not at this time. 6. Is there a way to show my rss feed from my website (that I use to manage my show) instead of the RSS feed from podcasts.com A: You could create a redirect URL on your site which you can give out and have it just redirect to ours. Notice  the tech support person is trying to get me to redirect my traffic to their website. (Or its a person who doesn’t understand podcasting, or they don’t want to display anything from your website). In speaking with Daniel J Lewis of the Audacity to Podcast, he had stated that he had some email exchanges and they seemed open to putting a link back to your website. Take it for what it’s worth. I see it as a platform for secondary distribution. Podclear and Soundcloud are now out of Beta Podclear is a way to record skype calls, and Soundcloud has been rumored to be losing money and looking for schedule D funding. The worst case scenario in the past was Podango which was a media hosting company that gave their customers a week to leave. Mixlr free year for Jim ran out. Their interface is a bit confusing at time. Michael Ray Has Questions About Owning Your RSS Feed [spp-timestamp time="41:17 "] Dave uses Libsyn's feed for his show. When his website had an issue, his show came out as it always does because Libsyn was fine (and his audience is subscribed to his RSS feed on Libsyn). The Ask the Podcast Coach using PowerPress (and the built in RSS Feed). You need to control your feed. Here is a video help explain why. Dave recommend Backup Creator to backup your website/wordpress. https://youtu.be/TdQrKhjF7IY  ADHD Think Tank Menu Questions Menus are used the create the navigation for your site. You should have at a minimum a Contact Page, and the About Page. From there its up to you. You can use the cryptx plugin to cut down on people spamming your podcast. You can look at other websites to use as ideas on how you can create your menus. Next Week Will Be the First Ever Dave-less Show Dave will be out next week, but Jim is going to get the keys and Drive. Recording On the Road Kathy wants to know record on the road. You can use the Voice Memo app and upload it to Dropbox. There are other tools like Bossjock Studio, and Rode LE on your phone.

"Don't give up, tenacity is huge, it's the whole thing." - Spencer Handley About: Spencer Handley- Founder of PodClear Overview: Spencer is a passionate entrepreneur who is out to help Podcasters achieve the greatest results with each of their interviews. He shares his background and what experiences and desires have led him to where he is today. Click to Tweet: Ep 173: Spencer Handley - Building Crystal Clear Audi Tools Highlights: Spencer's Background: Spencer is from Colorado originally, lived in LA- went to UCLA where he studied Chinese- actually lived in China for a year and ran a small little language acquisition tool business where he manufactured Chinese tools. He was also a musician (received an Associates in Music Composition) so he worked as a Jazz Musician/DJ in a night club. When he came back from China he went to Draper University, which is a school for entrepreneurs, and at the end of that program he pitched his business plan to venture capitalists and ended up winning the competition. From there, Spencer ran an enterprise software company for manufacturing for a year- had pretty good traction with it, but ended up folding the company because it wasn't what Spencer really wanted to do with his life. After that, he became heavily involved in consulting and is also planning on sticking with PodClear for as long as possible- it's more up his alley of work. What is PodClear: A software application for desktop (both Mac and PC) that allows podcast interviewers to interview guests with crystal clear audio quality. It records locally on both people's machines, and you are able to have unlimited guests. After the calls are complete, the audio files are synced to PodClear's servers, processed, and as a result you get uncompressed audio for your podcasts. How it Came About: Spencer is not a podcaster by trade, but is an avid podcast listener. The idea was evolved because Spencer and his team were listening to podcasts and found many of these podcasts were hard to hear. Spencer and his team were determined to create a way where the podcasts were recorded on both ends, and recorded crystal clear. It took about six weeks for Spencer and his team to create the software application. How it Works: You simply invite someone to be on the show, start a PodClear session, add your interviewee/s into the session, and then it will send them a 4-step process to follow and then are quickly added into the recorded session. Goals: Right now, Podclear has about 1,100 users. For Spencer, this is more of a passion product and not necessarily motived by money. The intention is to have this business to support them, and to be wherever they want (location independent) and let them interact with people the way they want to. Spencer does not work on PodClear full time, he is also an independent consultant. The more they can work on PodClear, the better the product they'll be able to have. They'd like to start working on it full time in April of this year. Biggest Challenge: Finding personal balance- working full time as a consultant and working on PodClear on the side has proven to be a hard task. Spencer shares that it can be really easy to get burned out and lose balance with life, but he also realizes that it's all part of starting a company. Advice for Entrepreneurs: Just keep experimenting until you find what works for you. Build a solid skill set that is marketable, something that has a high hour-to-cost ratio to help you bootstrap if necessary. Premeditate about what you want to do, choose what you love, and do what will work best for you.
