Space Week Ireland is an annual event celebrating Ireland's involvement in space exploration, innovation, and science. Coordinated by MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory, it runs in tandem with World Space Week, which aims to inspire the public, especially young people, to look to the stars and consider the impact of space research on life on Earth. This year, from 4th to 10th October, Space Week Ireland will embrace the global theme of 'Space and Climate', exploring the crucial intersection of space exploration and climate action. A series of events will raise awareness about how space science and technology can play a vital role in combating climate change. A flagship event, which puts this theme into focus, will take place at Explorium in Dublin on Wednesday, 9th October, from 11 am -1 pm, focusing on how space research can inform climate action. The event will feature insights from leading science communicator Dr Niamh Shaw, as well as a talk and Q&A session with former NASA astronaut Steve Swanson. Attendees will also experience Explorium's climate change-themed 'Cool It' interactive exhibition, which showcases innovative solutions to climate issues and demonstrates how lessons from space exploration can be applied here on Earth. The exhibition takes participants on a 40-minute journey that starts with an energy consumption questionnaire and an impactful climate video. Guests will then enter a model world where they face a challenge - a race to 2050 - and score points based on their choices. At the end, scores are uploaded to a spaceship, revealing the changes needed to achieve a more sustainable future. Participants will even learn how their actions can help save trees and mitigate environmental impact. Mark Langtry, Head of Sport and Science at Explorium, will open the event. Mark has studied Theoretical Physics and Climate Science so Space and Climate is very important to him and his work. With a hunger for Jesus that is contagious, Steve explains that the key to maintaining this everyday connection with Him is to seek Him and spend one-on-one time with Him in order to fill your lamp with His oil. Regardless of political leanings, there's a renewed and essential focus on local governing by school boards, commissioners courts and city councils. To understand the responsibilities, and the urgent need for the preparation of locally elected representatives, as well as the professional administrators and lawyers who work for them, and the public, it is important to know the duties and requirements of their positions. At the state level, there has been a lack of understanding of what the Texas Education Agency is supposed to do, and be prepared to do, under law in serving, not dictating to school districts. At the local level, there's a lack of understanding of what elected school boards are responsible to do under their district's own policies for planning and action to serve the needs of all schoolchildren, for the children's sake.Steve Swanson is a retired business executive and education researcher. He has volunteered in education for thirty years, including Austin, at the state, and in school districts throughout Texas. Steve's experience with, and research on, Johnston/Eastside Memorial HS revealed that students, teachers, and schools are not THE problem. This experience and research revealed the critical and urgent opportunity for improvement exists above the schools, at the district and state levels. Opportunities in the promises made in ISD policies and Texas laws for local governing of community planning and action serving the needs of all students, for the students' sake. Steve and Lynn Davenport met at a hearing in Austin at the Texas Education Agency in 2016. We don't need to reinvent or recreate new policies when we already have the tools we need to serve the needs of kids, we don't read the instructions! The important “instructional manuals” that exist in Texas with the Texas Education Code, the Texas Lawyer's Creed, and the Educator's Code of Ethics are in place for just these reasons.For example, Richardson ISD created a redundant Equity Policy which was already in existence under BQ Local to be applied to all students. That policy has been ignored for decades. In this episode of The Shawn Jenkins Podcast, we talked to Steve Swanson. Steve co-founded Automated Trading Desk, a company that pioneered high-frequency trading and disrupted Wall Street. After 12 years of growing the company, he was named president and CEO and increased ATD's market share to 7% of US daily equity trading volume. In 2007 ATD was sold to Citi Group for $680 million and Steve became global co-head of electronic trading for equities. Since leaving Citi in 2010, Steve has managed, mentored, and invested in several startups in New York and South Carolina. Steve was named one of the top 10 innovators of the decade by Wall Street Technology for the market changes ATD influenced. He currently serves on several boards, including The Bank of South Carolina and the board of trustees of the College of Charleston. I first met Steve when he invested in my company in 2001. In our conversation, we cover a wide range of topics, including building and growing ATD, what Steve looks for in an investment, including how he evaluates the many pitches he receives, how and why to join a board, and how he used PR to successfully position his small growing company as a legitimate technology partner for very large enterprises.
