The Gauteng Department of Health is mourning the death of a 19-year-old first-year nursing student at Chris Hani Baragwanath Nursing College in Soweto. She was found dead in her residence room on Tuesday evening after a friend raised concerns. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. The department of Health in Gauteng says it has activated counselling and psychosocial support services for students, lecturers, staff, and the bereaved family. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor speaks with Hani Almadhoun, Vice President of Philanthropy at UNRWA USA and co-founder of Gaza Soup Kitchen, an initiative that Hani and his family in Gaza started to feed people in Gaza during the Israeli genocide. Hani and Ahmed speak about Hani's family in Gaza and the work of the Gaza Soup Kitchen from its founding until today. They discuss the mission and work of UNRWA and the role that UNRWA USA plays in supporting it. And they talk about accountability, justice, and ways forward.  Hani Almadhoun is the Vice President of Philanthropy at UNRWA USA and co-founder of Gaza Soup Kitchen. Born in the Emirates, Hani's family fled to the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the first Gulf War. It was tough adjusting to the harsh conditions in Gaza during the First Intifada, but his family was made whole again when his dad got a job at an UNRWA school teaching English to refugees. A child of an educator, Hani was raised with the mantra of school being the top priority, and in this pursuit, he eventually found his way to the United States, thanks to a university scholarship from the LDS Church. After earning both his Masters in Public Administration and his BA in International Studies and Latin American studies from Brigham Young University, Hani settled in Washington, DC where he fell into the world of fundraising for various causes that spoke to him, including civil rights and social justice groups for Muslim and Arab Americans and charities that serve the Palestinian people and other marginalized communities in the Middle East. Ahmed Moor is a Palestinian-American writer born in Gaza and a Fellow at FMEP. He is an advisory board member of the US Campaign for Palestinian rights, co-editor of After Zionism (Saqi Books) and is currently writing a book about Palestine. He also currently serves on the board of the Independence Media Foundation. His work has been published in The Guardian, The London Review of Books, The Nation, and elsewhere. Growing up, para powerlifter, Hani Watson's passion for lifting had been ignited by her dad and the pack of Arnold Schwarzenegger-types in their string singlets who would accompany him to lift weights. The gym has seen Hani through agonising moments in life, and all the way to the Paralympic Games. Warning: discussion of sexual assault.Throughout her childhood she was having operation after painful operation, to try to straighten her bowed legs.After each surgery, the metal pins and screws would wreak havoc in Hani's legs, and they resumed growing in the same way they always had.In high school, ruptures at home meant Hani had to move out and support herself, and she lost touch with her mum. During this distressing time, a kindly school principal gave Hani the keys to the school gym, and that place became an anchor once more.After another unsuccessful surgery in her 30s, Hani was enjoying the freedom of a wheelchair, compared to the agonising and exhausting effort of walking.She turned to powerlifting to recover, which led her to worldwide competitions, eventually earning a bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022. Hani also competed at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.Further informationIf you need support, you can chat online with someone at Lifeline, or call on 13 11 14.Hani won a bronze medal for Australia in Glasgow at this year's Commonwealth Games! Peygamber (s.a.v.)'in Medîne'ye hicret etmesinin sonra başlarına çok büyük felaketler açabileceğinde hemfikir oldular ve Ebû Cehil'in “Her kabileden kuvvetli, heybetli kişiler seçip birlikte Muhammed (s.a.v.)'in evine gidelim. Yattığı yerde kendisini kılıçla parça parça edelim. Kimse görmeden oradan dağılalım. Ertesi gün Hâşimoğulları toplanıp O (s.a.v.)'i öldüreni isterler. Ancak bulamazlar. Çünkü Muhammed (s.a.v.)'i öldüren kimsenin, kim olduğunu bilemezler. Araya ileri gelenler girer. Bir çare bulurlar. Kanının pahasını veririz, bu iş de burada bitmiş olur.” fikrini kabul ettiler. Bu toplantı daha dağılmadan Cebrâil (a.s.) Peygamber (s.a.v.)'e Allâh (c.c.)'un emrini iletti: “Hani bir zaman da o kâfirler, seni tutup bağlamaları veya öldürmeleri ya da sürüp çıkarmaları için, sana tuzak kuruyorlardı; onlar tuzak kurarlarken Allâh da karşılığını kuruyordu. Öyle ya Allâh tuzakların hayırlısını kurar.” (Enfâl s. 30) Peygamber (s.a.v.): “Ey Cebrâil! Bu âyetin nüzûlünün sebebi nedir?” diye sordu. Cebrâil (a.s.) da kâfirlerin niyetini anlattı. Allâh Resûlü (s.a.v.): “Ey Cebrâil! Allâhü Teâlâ'nın bana emri nedir? Ne yapmalıyım?” diye sordu. Cebrâil (a.s.): “Hâkk Teâlâ senin de Medîne'ye hicret etmeni emretmektedir.” dedi. Allâh Resûlü (s.a.v.): “Hangi vakit gideyim?” diye sordu. Hz. Cebrâil (a.s.) bu soruya bir cevap vermedi. Allâh Resûlü (s.a.v.), Hz. Ebû Bekir (r.a.)'in evine geldi. Hz. Sıddîk (r.a.)'i durumdan haberdar etti. “Ey Allâh'ın Resûlü (s.a.v.)! Ben de seninle geleyim” dedi. Allâh Resûlü (s.a.v): “Evet. Sen de benimle geleceksin” buyurdu. Hz. Nicholson challenges the bizarre narrative that a Right Pole Janusz Walus and a White Supremacist Clive Derby-Lewis operated without outside assistance. Nicholson takes viewers through his list of suspects, including Hani's foes in the intelligence world, the captains of industry, and his rivals in the African National Congress (ANC). He further describes the similarity in motives for the murder of the “incorruptible” South African Communist Party (SACP) leader and those of five others: Anti-Apartheid Advocate Anton Lubowski, UN Commissioner for Namibia Bernt Carlsson, Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme, former Republic of Congo Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, and former UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld. He also deals with the suspicious death of Paul Madaka, who headed the National Intelligence Agency's (NIA) Anti-Corruption Unit.
