Interview No.43 with Mike Minnick of Curl Up & Die, Puig Destroyer, and Less Art.
I'm gonna be real: The character limit on here won't let me even put a dent in Ian's resume... This dude is a true gear dork, an insanely influential bassist, and a dude that has done it all and will continue to do more. Most of you might know Ian from his work in the bands Kowloon Walled City, Less Art, Puig Destroyer, No Lights, Strangelight, and on and on and on... We touch on alot of that, but really focus on his evolution as a player from Maiden enthusiast, to youtube-playthrough guru over at The Low Country. Be sure to check out the podcast he does with Riley Breckenridge over at www.productiveouts.com (also available wherever you listen to podcasts), and of course head over to youtube and scope The Low Country. This week, the thing Nick and Jordan love about baseball is pitch tinkering! You'd think we'd love the various CSes but nope, ALL our teams got knocked out, so we love something evergreen and theoretical rather than timely. (Though Kyle Boddy got hired by the Reds a few weeks ago so it's sorta timely.) We also talk a bit about the Braves tomahawk thing and why that organization so richly deserved to lose after engaing in the most perfunctory kind of course correction that actually did more harm than good. And finally, y'all get to hear Nick go gloriously papa bear about David P Samson's dumb dumb dumb tweet about Daniel Hudson wanting to be there for his wife and his child. It's beautiful and stirring. Our other baseball podcast is the Productive Outs Prodcast! It's the podcast corollary to the great great twitter account from Riley Breckinridge and Tim Miller of PUIG DESTROYER, Jordan's favorite baseball-centric semi-parodic grindcore band. (Riley was also in Thrice, which is deeply cool for certain people.) Follow Productive Outs and Riley on Twitter, and subscribe! We head to the former 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre to meet Riley Breckenridge from Thrice (and baseball podcast, Productive Outs). He tells us about the early days of the band, playing music with his brother, touring with a family back home, his baseball grindcore project Puig Destroyer, and his friendship with Baltimore Orioles Outfielder Mark Trumbo. We also ask him a series of hard hitting fan submitted questions and find out what he’s been listening to on his iPhone. --- More Podcasts: Episode Archive Subscribe to Cigar City Radio: iTunes | Android | Stitcher | RSS Connect with us: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Spotify
Thrice drummer Riley Breckenridge joins The Hurley Edition from the band's tour bus (3:10). Riley discusses the band's decision to tour as an opener for Deftones and Rise Against instead of headlining a tour (5:30) and the challenges that come with it. He also provides perspective on what it's like to release new music in the age of streaming services (11:25). He shares his thoughts on the major turning point in Thrice's career (16:40) before briefly discussing the legendary side project known as Puig Destroyer (22:10). Mike and Riley commiserate on being on the DL in men's league baseball (23:48) before getting into the woes of the Angels (25:40) and talking about the feeling of having Thrice's music play through some sports arenas around the country (29:27). Lastly, he recalls what it was like to play in Boston as a Lakers fan during Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals (31:15).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Chapter 76: "Less Art, More Thrice" ...as read by Riley Breckenridge Riley Breckenridge took some time out of his insane schedule to come join the story. Yeah everyone is busy, but this guy... ...is in a little band called Thrice who is touring again: http://thrice.net ...has started a new band with members of Curl Up And Die, Thrice and Kowloon Walled City called Less Art: https://www.facebook.com/LESSARTBAND/ ...cohosts a music and baseball podcast with Ian Miller called Productive Outs: http://productiveouts.com ...started a joke side project baseball grind band called Puig Destroyer: https://puigdestroyer.bandcamp.com ...and produces his own music: https://rileybreck.bandcamp.com He is also an exhausted new parent trying to find his way. We discuss all his musical endeavors and even in- between band jobs. (He sold a suit to baseball phenom Mike Trout. Seriously.) Riley explains how touring is different than it was before being a dad and we go into the deep end of the pool about faith. Thank you Riley for taking the time and thanks Ian for connecting us. Also, this podcast has an exclusive Less Art clip for their song "Shapeshifter" that Riley was nice enough to let me push out there. Enjoy! Pete and Vince are back in the studio kicking it old school with the podcast and awesome guest Riley Breckenridge. Riley is the drummer of OC rock band Thrice, and is freshly returned from touring in Europe. In addition to his multiple bands (Thrice, Puig Destroyer and Less Art), Riley is a lover of baseball, a former college baseball player and the co-host of the 'Productive Outs PRODcast' with Ian Miller. An Angels fan since childhood, Riley has followed the Halos and had the thrill of hearing Thrice played over the PA at an Angels game. He's also close friends with former Angels OF/1B Mark Trumbo, so we talked about how the two became friends and the huge season Trumbo is having with the Orioles (leads the league in HRs). We also had a bit of talk about Riley's many bands followed by some Angels talk regarding this season and beyond. Rounding out the podcast is some LA Rams talk and '5 Good Questions' you won't want to miss.
Episode #32 I welcome Riley Breckenridge the drummer from Thrice! We chat about the new album 'To be everywhere is to be nowhere' what he got up to during the time Thrice took a break, baseball, Music industry, Puig Destroyer and more! Enjoy! www.djforcex.com www.thrice.net

I plead complete ignorance over all matters sportball or otherwise sports-related (save for hockey season when the Detroit Red Wings are doing well that season). So seeing an EP of sportball-related songs come across my desk isn't that intriguing. But when it's a CC-licensed album of tightly crafted sportball songs that also comes across the Metal Injection desk, then I take notice. I also take notice when I see new albums from some of my favorite artists like Mountain Mirrors and Agónica. And my other dirty little secret is I wanna get more Attractive Eighties Women songs because they seem to have carjacked Mojo Nixon's tractor and gone on one hell of a joyride. Plus we have awesome tracks from Grey Heaven Fall, Dust Tria, Sunken, Nameless, and Samsara. It's like a duffel-bag of sportball things to be sportballin' with and... yeah, OK, I'm done.
