In the midst of today's AI hysteria, have we forgotten about blockchain technology and the seductive Web3 promise of decentralization? Robbie Bach, longtime Xbox chief and lieutenant of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, certainly hasn't. In his new novel, The Blockchain Syndicate, the prescient Bach imagines not only a giant political crypto grift, but also warns about the siren song of Distributed Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). No, blockchain might not be as sexy or lucrative as LLMs these days - but Web3 still matters even if, as Bach suggests, its promise of a decentralized network remains more seductive than substantive.1. Crypto as “Giant Grift” Bach views cryptocurrency as a highly risky, speculative investment vehicle comparable to commodities like gold or silver, but warns there's “definitely a giant grift” happening, with vulnerable people—particularly older investors putting their savings at risk—being exploited by those taking advantage of the crypto craze.2. FBI and CIA Are Irreplaceable Bach emphasizes that regardless of political views about current leadership, institutions like the FBI and CIA are essential for national security with no viable replacement. That's a great question—and we have an answer. We met Rep. Dollens at a recent event focused on combating Christian Nationalism sponsored by Interfaith Alliance. He shared his story of crashing a meeting with the National School Chaplain Association and how that group and similar groups are pushing a Christian Nationalist agenda in state legislatures across the country.  He has been leading the fight to protect Oklahoma public school students from a religious takeover of their schools and shares some insights for those of us fighting the same fight here in Texas. Mike Johnson warns that the Democrats' choice is causing "real personal and economic strain" for troops, TSA, and air traffic controllers. Fetterman's Common Sense: Senator John Fetterman is praised as a reasonable Democrat for publicly stating that conservative Trump supporters are "not fascists" or trying to destroy the Constitution.   Trade, Agriculture, and China The Gutter Oil Threat: President Trump threatened to place a 100% tariff on goods, specifically "used cooking oil," coming from China. Hurting U.S. Farmers: This used cooking oil is often called "gutter oil" in China. While it is not imported for direct food use, it's used as a cheap ingredient (one-third the price of soybean oil) in biofuel production. It was a true pleasure last week to chat to the meme trader, parody hedge fund manager and Shrubstack author himself, Le Shrub. Le Shrub uses humour and parody to highlight opportunities and turning points in financial markets, which he brings to life for his followers on his Reminiscences of a Shrub Operator website.  We discuss the role of satire in understanding the stranger than fiction world we inhabit. We are worse off in terms of corporatism in the GOP than we were even 10 years ago. We have a lost decade in primaries. The online crowd might be upset with Trump over Epstein, but they will never channel that dissent into anything useful. There is no long-term plan to build enduring victories on a single issue.
