Watch the live stream: Watch on YouTube About the show Sponsored by Shortcut - Get started at shortcut.com/pythonbytes Special guest: Chris Patti Brian #1: Using cog to update --help in a Markdown README file Simon Willison I've wanted to have a use case for Ned Batchelder's cog Cog is a utility that looks for specially blocks [[[cog some code ]]] and [[[end]]] These block can be in comments, [HTML_REMOVED] for markdown. When you run cog on a file, it runs the “some code” and puts the output after the middle ]]] and before the [[[end]]]. Simon has come up with an excellent use, running --help and capturing the output for a README.md file for a CLI project. He even wrote a test, pytest of course, to check if the README.md needs updated. Michael #2: An oral history of Bank Python Bank Python implementations are effectively proprietary forks of the entire Python ecosystem which are in use at many (but not all) of the biggest investment banks. The first thing to know about Minerva is that it is built on a global database of Python objects. Barbara is a simple key value store with a hierarchical key space. It's brutally simple: made just from pickle and zip. Applications also commonly store their internal state in Barbara - writing dataclasses straight in and out with only very simple locking and transactions (if any). There is no filesystem available to Minerva scripts and the little bits of data that scripts pick up has to be put into Barbara. Barbara also has some "overlay" features: # connect to multiple rings: keys are 'overlaid' in order of # the provided ring names db = barbara.open("middleoffice;ficc;default") # get /Etc/Something from the 'middleoffice' ring if it exists there, # otherwise try 'ficc' and finally the default ring some_obj = db["/Etc/Something"] Lots of info about modeling with classes (instruments, books, etc) If you understand excel you will be starting to recognize similarities. In Excel, spreadsheets cells are also updated based on their dependencies, also as a directed acyclic graph. Dagger allows people to put their Excel-style modelling calculations into Python, write tests for them, control their versioning without having to mess around with files like CDS-OF-CDS EURO DESK 20180103 Final (final) (2).xlsx. Dagger is a key technology to get financial models out of Excel, into a programming language and under tests and version control. Time to drop a bit of a bombshell: the source code is in Barbara too, not on disk. Remain composed. It's kept in a special Barbara ring called sourcecode. Interesting table structures, like Pandas, but closer to a DB (MnTable) Over time the divergence between Bank Python and Open Source Python grows. Technology churns on both sides, much faster outside than in of course, but they do not get closer. Minerva has its own IDE - no other IDEs work if you keep your source files in a giant global database. What I can't understand is why it contains its own web framework. Investment banks have a one-way approach to open source software: (some of) it can come in, but none of it can go out BTW, I “read” this with naturalreaders app Chris #3: Pyxel Pyxel is a ‘retro gaming console' written in Python! This might seem old and un-shiny, but the restrictions imposed by the environment gift simplicity Vastly decreased learning time and effort compared to something like Unity or even Pygame Straight forward simple commands, just like it was for micro-computers in the 80s cls(), line(), rect(), circ() etc. Pyxel is somewhat more Python and less console than others like PICO-8 or TIC-80 but this is a feature! Use your regular development environment to build. Brian #4: How to Ditch Codecov for Python Projects Hynek Schlawack Codecov is a third party service that checks your coverage output and fails a build if coverage dropped. It's not without issues. Hynek is using coverage.py --fail-under flag in place of this in GitHub actions. It's not as simple as just adding a flag if you are using --parallel to combine coverage for multiple test runs into one report. Hynek is utilizing the coverage output as an artifact for each test, then pulling them all together in a coverage stage combine and check coverage. He provides the snippet of GH Action, and even links to a working workflow file using this process. Nice! Michael #5: tiptop (like glances) via Zach Villers tiptop is a command-line system monitoring tool in the spirit of top. It displays various interesting system stats, graphs it, and works on all operating systems. Really nice visualization for your servers Good candidate for pipx install tiptop Chris #6: pyc64 A Commodore 64 emulator written in pure Python! Not 100% complete - screen drawing is PETSCII character mode only This still allows for a lot of interesting apps & exploration Actual machine emulation using py65 - a pure Python 6502 chip emulator! You can pop to a Python REPL from inside the emulator and examine data structures like memory, registers, etc! An incredible example of what Python is capable of 0.6 Mhz with CPython and over 2Mhz with pypy! Extras Michael: Michael's FlaskCon 2021 HTMX Talk Chris: Amazon OpsTech IT is hiring! News, a possible spring stretcher, Pickle Review and what we're watching!! The guys have some news to fill you in on in the entertainment business, nothing too exciting.  That turns into a discussion on whether or not Jerry has a spring Stretcher or something that is just a mild annoyance.  He thinks its a mild annoyance, Chris says its definitely a Spring Stretcher.  Either way stop saying these those two things!!! Smack dab in the middle of the show we get into our pickle review!  Jerry has brought 8 different kinds of pickles, 2 varieties of Claussen pickles, which he says is the base pickle that everything is judged from.  Then he has 6 other varieties from Green Kamikozees pickle company.  This company pickles almost anything under the sun, and the variety of flavors for their pickles is absolutely amazing.  Chris and Jerry had a blast trying all of these flavors, you will not be disappointed.   Finally we have some what we're watching.  Jerry has went to the movies a couple times and saw some Bond, some Rons gone wrong, and Netflixed and chilled by himself watching The Rock and Ryan Reynolds run around.  Chris doesn't watch TV anymore because he's an over worked farmer, that is struggling with seasonal depression and malnutrition.   But Jerry's a ball of joy still!! Welcome to November 14, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate all things sour and a day in your PJs.  One of the oldest methods of preserving food is pickling. This process involves placing vegetables or fruits in a sealed container with brine or vinegar. The fermentation that takes place changes the flavor and texture of the food, creating pickles, though technically only pickled cucumbers are referred to as “pickles.” Everything else has the word “pickled” before its name. So why do only cucumbers get this honor? Well, for starters, it's one of the best parts of going to a deli. No corned beef or pastrami sandwich would be complete without one. On National Pickle Day, get your pucker on anyway you please.  Nothing makes us feel cozier than spending the day in our pajamas. That's why we love holidays that invite the whole family to enjoy this feeling together. But why wait for the hustle and bustle of the season when any day of the week will do. At least that's the rationale behind National Family PJ Day. A day spent in our jammies means we prioritize things like board games, brunch and extra time curled up together watching movies or reading books. This day is all the better because there are no expectations or traditions beyond hanging out together and keeping it casual. And if you're into matching jammies you might as well snap a few holiday photos so you can check that off your list. Hey, you just started a trend and you're barely out of bed!  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Hello and welcome back to another episode of Mindful Living with Dr. Cecilia Lopez. This is Zy, hello! For today's episode, Dr. L gives you a quick overview of what is called the “Pickle Jar Theory”. More commonly known as Stephen Covey's Time Management Matrix, this technique helps you with time and stress management by helping identify and prioritize different tasks. The matrix is a box divided into four quadrants, which each represents a different way your time is organized based on urgency and importance. Dr. L also teaches this by using the examples of golf balls, marbles, sand, and water. The four quadrants are:
 1. [Golf Balls] Urgent and Important (to me) 2. [Marbles] Not Urgent yet Important 3. [Sand] Urgent but Not Important (to me) 4. [Water] Not Urgent and Not Important We hope you learn a thing or two and find this episode helpful! I know when I was working with her and she gave a lesson on this, I found it very useful. Rachel has a problem. Her boss can't see the need to change. She is frustrated and doesn't know what to do. Lucky for her, she listens to our podcast and took advantage of our “Help! I'm in a Pickle!” segment for our advice on what to do.  In this episode, we explore what Rachel, or anyone who champions Customer Experience but doesn't have the support they need from above, can do to convince her boss that there is a need for change. We share strategies and tactics anyone can use to motivate the person they report to without getting written up on their boss's weekly report.  Key Ideas to Improve your Customer Experience Much of the advice we share isn't all that different from what we share about Customer Experience. After all, in both cases, you are trying to get people to do something that you want, and that requires motivation.  Like customers, your boss has values and metrics they think are important. They have priorities and time constraints like everyone else does, too. Persuading people requires making the change as important to them as it is to you to move Customer Experience up the priorities and give it the time and resources it needs to facilitate the customer-driven growth you want.   Here are some key moments from the discussion: 02:54   We read Rachel's email about how her boss does not use the organization's mission and values in his decision making and she wants him to. 06:29   Colin shares two essential points about getting any person to do anything, customer, co-worker, or otherwise.    09:11   Ryan explains how using measurement to motivate change, like a monthly update on achievement of these goals, keeps the mission and values top of mind for everyone.     16:07  Colin also suggest researching the competition and seeing how they use their mission and values, then report that to the boss.     18:13  Ryan suggests using the principles behind “nudging” to help the boss understand the importance of using the mission and values more in their leadership.   20:45  Ryan suggests using social pressure by getting other employees excited about the mission and values, too, so it's harder for your leadership to ignore.  22:13  Colin shares a real-world example of using Social Proof to influence the leadership to come around to the organization's new way of thinking through intra-company program where future invites were recommended by previous attendees. 25:02 We encourage everyone to remember that leadership can come from anywhere, so don't be afraid lead others, no matter where you rank in the organization.     Please tell us how we are doing! It helps keep their beloved portly Pickle in shape. Struthers spoke to Susie Ferguson.

PayPal picking Pinterest puts us in a parsing pickle

Look, we don't get it either.Taking some time as a group to sit around and chat through the possibly impending PayPal-Pinterest deal, Natasha and Alex didn't wind up cracking the story. Which makes some sense, as investors sent PayPal stock down 5% on the news, implying that they didn't really get it either.Recall that PayPal has made a few other deals in recent years, including buying Honey ($4 billion) and Paidy (less than $4 billion).Regardless, the transaction -- worth potentially dozens of billions -- could scoot the social giant into the welcoming arms of PayPal, an American consumer and business fintech giant. Here's what we tried to sort out:Does Pinterest have a big enough ecommerce story to make the deal line up with our first expectations? We talked about Pinterest's historical stock performance, as well as a number of culture controversies it has been embroiled in.Why doesn't PayPal just buy Etsy instead? Here we dug into why a shop-able, searchable mood-board may satisfy customer demands, thus Pinterest's lag on fintech infrastructure - in comparison to Etsy - has been somewhat surprising. And if technology is all bundling, and unbundling, does it make some sort of sense for PayPal to join forces with a more e-commerce content focused business, now more than a half-decade removed from its eBay divorce? We ended with jokes about fintech's expected (and unexpected) consolidation, and we want your best guesses for what's next on Twitter. Frankly we had a good time. Mary Ann was going to join up but was thwarted by Apple's iPhone headphone design, while Danny was slightly busy trying to figure out why his spouse beat him at Settlers of Catan, his favorite board game. We are back Friday with our regularly scheduled programming!

One of my favorite customer service books is from legendary author and speaker Bob Farrell. In his book, ‘Give ‘Em the Pickle', he discusses how to improve client satisfaction and retention through three words, “I'll be back." However, as Jody and I explain in this episode, to earn this phrase, one should not rely on the protocol alone. Contrarily, if you want to go above and beyond in our affairs, dare to fuse selfless service with common sense. But Dan? How do we equip our employees to do this? The answer is simple: Have a framework to empower from. Give your team the confidence to make critical decisions and proactively communicate expectations. By doing this, you can ensure your organization will give clients a reason to tell positive stories about you. That's right, Jodie and Celia are once again talking about craptastic birthday parties, but this time neither of them is responsible for one of the biggest, baddest, and most uncut birthday fails of all time! In fact, the word Big is built right into the fail, as well as the theme of the party, since it involves Big Foot. Because, of course it does. Then, Jodie casually admits to having one of the dorkiest birthday themes of all time! Meanwhile, Celia's story takes the (vomit) cake. Grammy-winning country artist and bestselling cookbook author Trisha Yearwood joins us to discuss her latest cookbook, 'Trisha's Kitchen: Easy Comfort Food for Friends & Family.'   Nashville Hot Chicken Sliders Makes 12 Sliders When I first moved to Nashville, the only place to get hot chicken was Prince's Hot Chicken on Ewing Drive. These days, hot chicken is all the rage in Nashville, and you can find it in a lot of restaurants. I love it all, but Prince's is still the gold standard for me. These sliders are my nod to Ms. André Prince Jeffries, who still serves up the best hot chicken I've ever tasted! Meatballs 1 pound ground chicken1 tablespoon Louisiana hot sauce1 tablespoon light brown sugar1 teaspoon smoked paprika½ teaspoon kosher salt¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper2 garlic cloves, minced2 ounces blue cheese, cut into 12 (¼-inch) cubes2 tablespoons butter1 tablespoon vegetable oil Sauce ½ cup (1 stick) butter½ cup Louisiana hot sauce2 tablespoons honey2 tablespoons light brown sugar1½ teaspoons garlic powder1 teaspoon kosher salt¼ teaspoon freshlyground black pepper2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley Sliders 12 slider bunsPickle chips (I like bread-and-butter pickles) 1. Make the meatballs: Preheat the oven to 375°F. 2. In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, hot sauce, brown sugar, paprika, salt, black pepper, cayenne, and garlic and gently mix with your hands until combined. 3. Divide the meat mixture into 12 portions, then form them into meatballs using wet hands. (Meat sticks to dry hands.) Push a piece of cheese into each meatball and pinch the meat mixture around it to enclose the cheese. 4. In a large ovenproof sauté pan, heat the butter and vegetable oil over medium heat until combined and shimmering, about 2 minutes. Add the meatballs and brown on all sides, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the pan to the oven and bake for 10 minutes to finish cooking the meatballs. 5. Meanwhile, make the sauce: In a small saucepot, combine the butter, hot sauce, honey, and brown sugar. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring continuously, then reduce the heat to medium and cook until the mixture comes together, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the garlic powder, salt, and pepper and stir until smooth. 6. Remove the meatballs from the oven and pour the sauce over them. Toss to coat. Sprinkle with the parsley. Add a pickle chip to each bun, then set a meatball on top. Skewer with a toothpick. Serve warm.
