President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed strong relations between South Africa and Netherlands. He says strategic partnership between the two countries has evolved, matured and is increasingly of mutual benefit. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Kingdom of Netherlands are on a State Visit to South Africa. This is the second visit of a Dutch monarch since Queen Beatrix visited South Africa at the invitation of President Nelson Mandela in 1996.
Male-preference primogeniture and salic law have meant that most European monarchs have been men. Queen regnants are exceedingly rare in history. But for 90 years from 1890 to 1980 The Netherlands was reigned over by three successive Queens. Wilhelmina inherited the throne after the early deaths of all three of her brothers, Juliana because she was an only child and Beatrix because she was the eldest of 4 sisters. These Queens were heroes of the first and second world wars, the first female billionaires, courted controversy with their choices of husbands and friends and won the admiration of their people with their down-to-earth style. Let's meet the three Queens of the Netherlands. Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana & Queen Beatrix. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Open this story on izi.travel The Golden Age marked both an economic climax in Dutch history and a cultural one. Many of the works of art that date from around the same time as the canal ring are to be found in the imposing edifice on the opposite side of the road and the water. This is the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Netherlands' largest museum. Its collection contains many famous works and you can see many paintings by the Dutch masters of the Golden Age, including Rembrandt van Rijn's Night Watch, Johannes Vermeer's Milkmaid and many others. Beyond the Rijksmuseum, there is the large expanse of park, the Museumplein, which features the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum. The Rijksmuseum was closed to the public for ten years while this magnificent building underwent a drastic renovation. Work has been done on the entire exterior, the entrance and the walkway under the building, and the interior has a completely new look. The ‘new' Rijksmuseum was opened by Queen Beatrix in early 2013, an occasion celebrated with fireworks and a big party. If you want to see an impression of this festive occasion, watch the video. If you are wondering what the renovated building and Museumplein beyond look like now, just cross the road and follow the walkway under the building.
April 30th 2013 - we have a new King! After 33 years Queen Beatrix (1938) is now... King Willem-Alexander (1967) and Máxima (1971) of course as his Queen. Reason enough for us to play some tracks on this very special day today and welcome you to an Orange-tinted country. To celebrate the past and future: it’s the Final Queensday in The Netherlands. “Lieve Moeder...” words by Willem-Alexander to thank Beatrix, his mother, is followed by a remarkable track performed by Krister Linder. There’s only one way to experience this song: play it loud! So many tones and details, so much beauty can be heard and the voice of the heart comes from Krister. Superbe! Sonne, ist das neue Schiller album. Guten Abend! After watching the Bluray we just wanted to treat you with at least two tracks; Revelation and Berlin/Moskau can be found on the latest album ‘Sonne’. You can buy the release in many variations, from deluxe till super-deluxe. The typical Schiller style, just very spacey, great sounding and perfectly mixed. We have one suggestion though: Schiller should pay more attention to his live performances in the sense of keeping those acts more compact, more to-the-point and having a tempting climax, all within 90 minutes. Possible? Just a thought. The F.D. Project plays ‘The Outro’ and has the old-style sound and vibes, never boring, always pleasant to listen to. We found the release from a couple of years ago ; ‘Song for the Phoenix’ by System 7, the band based around Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy; they started in the 90’s with their typical sound-baths as we call them... tons of sounds, tons of patterns, delays, hypnotic ingredients and .. fat and pumping bases! The ‘Phoenix’ track is one you will never hear on the radio, read our lips. Therefore we wanted to give you this hint so you can enjoy their album ‘Phoenix’ as we do. East of France, Mulhouse, the Hypnotique LIVE sessions part 4. Released via Ultimae.com - in one word: brilliant LIVE stuff! So very well mixed and mastered; SCANN-TEC delivers an outstanding piece of art, the sounds of man (Vladislav) and his machinery (too much to mention). Go get this one today! We’re completey lost in time now... listening to Asheni you simply have to admit: life sucks sometimes. Or is it good to know the pain, then to understand Quality Time even better? You decide. Asheni’s voice is fabulous. She (from Spain?) can be found on the iTunes Store to keep things simple. Like it was meant to be... Krister comes back again, his track ‘Ghostfriend’ sounds like an answer to the ‘Lost in Time’ track. Enjoy this flow... The track comes from the album ‘Songs from the Silent Years’ which we got from Krister personally when we visited London back in 2006, we had a meeting, small chat, hands and this CD, just before a LIVE gig. Thank you Krister! We’re still proud of your music. We’d like to thank our supporters, our donators, our executive producers. Wanna join the team? Please feel free to support the Spacemusic podcast. With guests Phill Jupitus, Andrew Maxwell, Miranda Sawyer and Wayne Deakin. Plus music from Loretta Maine. This month's podcast covers, amongst other things, the European Union, Antisemitism, Trans-Confessional Cannibalism, Toxic Vaginas, Ireland, Afghanistan, Royal Families and Abdication, and how Andrew Maxwell was enchanted by a red Squirrel. Mr Jupitus performs an uncanny impersonation of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and there is some really foul and seditious language all round. Also, please note that the first two times Mr Maxwell says 'roundabout' he actually means 'crossroads'.
Is technology our next-nature? The 2010 Dutch royal christmas message, given by Queen Beatrix, inspired us to initiate a talk on the influence of technology on our daily lives. The Queens states that we alienate ourselves from our fellow men and our direct nature through the rise of social media. But how virtual is virtual life? How alienating is technology actually? Slavoj Zizek gives us an inspiring insight on these questions and directly challenges the Queen’s statement! A round-table discussion with first years students of the Sandberg Institute Design Departement about technology vs. ecology and ecology as an ideology. With Anja Groten, Michele Champagne, Brigiet van den Berg, Maartje Smits, Donald Beekman, Liza Enebeis and Janneke de Rooij and Lauren Grusenmeyer as moderators. Recorded March 3, 2010 at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. Click here to view.Today's video takes you to a place when trains were filled with art and certain writers were viewed as "KINGS". One of these "KINGS" was BLADE and I was lucky enough to talk with him for a few minutes during the painting of one of his pieces this summer at 5 Pointz: An Institution for Higher Burning during a shoot for the forthcoming SKILLZ DVD Magazine. To give you an idea about who BLADE was in the scheme of NYC Graffiti Writers, here's a short excerpt describing the man himself. "BLADE: King, master, visionary. BLADE is more than a graffiti artist. A remarkably pivotal figure in the history of graffiti. Blade's successes as a graffiti artist are myriad. BLADE's artwork has been extensively collected and exhibited for over twenty years and has participated in over 60 select solo and group gallery exhibitions throughout the world. BLADE has also been involved in numerous symposiums and appeared in hundreds of articles, television features, magazine and journal publications and catalogues. At the forefront of the subway graffiti movement in the 1970's, BLADE's work is not only recognized as significantly influential, but his lengthy career as a professional artist has warranted his worldwide notoriety and fame. Painting over 5,000 trains and evolving to new levels of subway and canvas graffiti, BLADE has had exhibitions at the Whitney Museum (2000), Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2000), a 1991 show at the Musee National Des Monuments François (Paris France), numerous shows at the Groninger Museum, and dozens of shows in Europe and Asia. On October 28, 1994, Blade was invited to the Groninger Museum to meet Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, as she was attending the prestigious institution's re-opening. His work is highly collectable." Go ahead, don' be shy and leave a comment.
