Kevin Young is the poetry editor for The New Yorker, and the author of many books of his own poetry. His newest work, “Night Watch,” focusses on death, while also drawing upon his wide view of history, from the end of slavery in the U.S. to Dante's seven-hundred-year-old poem “The Divine Comedy.” Young tells David Remnick that Dante actually played an outsized role in bringing “Night Watch” to life: “This is a book that, I think, without him, I would have kept in a drawer because the subjects were kind of dark that I was trying to contend with, and [Dante] gave a framework for me,” Young explains. “How do you write about [hell] and frame it as a journey rather than a morass?”

New Yorker magazine poetry editor Kevin Young has called poetry “the most efficient mode of time travel.” In his new volume of poems “Night Watch,” Young, a literary hyphenate who edits, writes and teaches, takes readers on a journey of loss and re-emergence. From his cycle of poems about a conjoined pair of twins born into slavery and kidnapped to a carnival freak show to his meditations on grief set to the phases of the moon, Young's spare and incisive language provides the reader passage through history and memory. We talk to Young about his collection and what it means to be a poet today. Guests: Kevin Young, poet and author; poetry editor, The New Yorker; former director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture Learn more about your ad choices. Beth Golay recently spoke with “Night Watch” author Kevin Young about the themes of loss and memory in his latest poetry collection and the influences of Dante, African American spirituals and nature on his work.
It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a 3 parter anyways. The 90s was a stinker of a decade for horror. That's what history tells us, well lets investigate our selves because the old saying goes that history is written by the victors and horror always wins. So what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1994? Well, here we have the top 5. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Plus some bangin' mates, a few J&B whiskey's and a 4+ hour running time. This is 1994, A Year In Horror. 0.00 - Intro15.52 - The worst horror films from 199421.05 - Sci-Fi Corner26.37 - Also Rans33.40 - In The Mouth of Madness38.04 - Serial Mom43.34 - Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (w/ Father Malone)
A little something different this week: we're looking at two Soderbergh-scripted adaptations of international genre films! First, Soderbergh adapted Ole Bornedal's 1994 NATTEVAGTEN as 1997's NIGHTWATCH, also directed by Bornedal, starring post-TRAINSPOTTING, pre-PHANTOM MENACE Ewan McGregor as a night watchman at a spooky morgue. Next, Soderbergh turned Fabián Bielinsky's 2000 Argentine heist smash NUEVA REINAS (NINE QUEENS) into 2004's CRIMINAL, the directorial debut of Gregory Jacobs starring John C. Reilly and Diego Luna. Why did Sodey do this? Is there anything of the man in these adaptations? Do you need to watch four films before you listen to this episode? The answer to the last question is no! Fun ep, please enjoy. Further Reading: Steven Soderbergh: Interviews, ed. I interviewed Jayne Anne Phillips, who won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her novel Night Watch. We dug into passages from her writing that will show you how she thinks about voice, character, and the poetry of great writing. As you listen, I want you to notice something: pay attention to how many times Jane describes writing as a full-bodied experience. She sees the creative process almost like an archaeologist would, feeling her way into the hidden and mysterious world of her own novel. Now that sounds fascinating, but how do you actually do that? Well, that's what this interview is all about. Enjoy! Hey! I'm David Perell and I'm a writer, teacher, and podcaster. I believe writing online is one of the biggest opportunities in the world today. For the first time in human history, everybody can freely share their ideas with a global audience. I seek to help as many people publish their writing online as possible. Sara Watkins joins Basic Folk to talk about 'Wild and Clear and Blue,' the new album from I'm With Her, her band with Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan. The new LP was inspired by looking back on your life in order to move forward, with a very witchy manner of speaking that encompasses the ancient, mysterious, and spiritual. Sara shares insights into the unique telepathic connection they feel within the band, which was palpable from their first public appearance in 2014. Watkins is at it again with her incredible vocal performances on this album, bringing to mind Fiona Apple – especially on the "Sisters of the Night Watch."A longtime Angeleno, Sara gets into the meaning of another song, “Standing on the Fault Line,” which finds her reconsidering what's safe, what's permanent, and what is essential in order to remain in California. She also explains how the group's tight-knit sisterhood and collaborative efforts have strengthened over the years. Elsewhere, we also talk about the meaning of a "supergroup" versus a cohesive band, artistic processes, and how personal history and motherhood have impacted their music. Additionally, we explore the challenges of balancing life on tour, the importance of small talk, the necessity of doing music as a hobby for personal fulfillment, and the massive annual band party that inspired "Year After Year." In this episode of Talking Drupal, we discuss the latest DOJ accessibility ruling and its implications for Drupal with special guest Josh Mitchell. Josh, a seasoned expert who has led teams in digital agencies, governments, and non-profits, sheds light on what the ruling means for state and local governments, the importance of accessibility, and steps to achieve compliance. We also explore the Sa11y module, a powerful tool for enhancing website accessibility, and compare it with the Editorially module. Additionally, we touch on the upcoming MID Camp 2025. Tune in for an insightful discussion on making web content more accessible for all. There's a module for that Module name/project name: Sa11y Brief history It's worth mentioning that the name is a numeronym, so spelled s-a-1-1-y, which plays off of a common way the word “accessibility” is abbreviated How old: created in Jan 2018 by Bryan Sharpe (b_sharpe) but the namespace was taken over in Jun 2024 by Mark Conroy (markconroy) of LocalGov Drupal, so the current 3.0.1 release, which supports Drupal 10 and 11, is a completely different module than the original 8.x-1.x branch. Maintainership Actively maintained, in fact this module came out of the ongoing work being done on the LocalGov distribution and profile Security coverage Test coverage: no, but the module is effectively just a wrapper for the Sa11y library, which is CMS agnostic and used in the Wordpress and Joomla communities as well The Sa11y library has its own website, which includes documentation Number of open issues: 1 open issues, which isn't a bug Usage stats: 62 sites Module features and usage We did cover the Editoria11y accessibility checker as MOTW all the way back in episode #350, almost 3 years ago, and Sa11y was mentioned at that time. Both modules have had major releases since then, so I thought this week's episode would be a chance to do an updated comparison Sa11y does include some checks that Editoria11y does not, such as color contrast checking and a readability score The Editoria11y module, on the other hand, includes site-wide reporting that would be helpful for site admins, as well as a wealth of configuration options including one or more DOM elements to use as the container to check within, a list of elements to exclude, and so on. Recent versions of Editoria11y also include an option for live feedback as you edit, which should work with CKEditor 5, Paragraphs 5 or newer, and Gutenberg At the end of the day, however, both projects are intended to provide your content editors with immediate feedback on the accessibility compliance of what they create. So, it's worth looking at the feedback each tool provides and deciding which one is more useful for your team in particular

S6E64 In this episode of BatChat, we're shining a spotlight on NightWatch, a groundbreaking community science project from the Bat Conservation Trust. Launched in 2021, NightWatch is the only initiative of its kind in the UK, helping people uncover the hidden world of nighttime wildlife while breaking down barriers that prevent communities from connecting with nature.Join host Steve Roe as he chats with Siobhan Dempsey at the Restore Nature Now march, where they discuss how NightWatch is making bat surveys more accessible—particularly for people from minority ethnic backgrounds, lower-income communities, and those with disabilities. With thousands of bat echolocation calls recorded across 750+ sites, and over 2,000 people engaged so far, this project is transforming urban conservation. But to keep NightWatch running, we need your help! We must raise £14,000 by June 2025 to ensure more people can discover the wonders of bats in their neighborhoods.

Join me and my special guest Frank Calvillo Film critique and fellow Fletcher enthusiast to discuss the 1973 film Night Watch starring Elizabeth Taylor. The film was written by famed writer Lucille Fletcher. Fletcher brought us the 1943 radio play Sorry, Wrong Number and the subsequent 1948 film of the same title starring Barbara Stanwyck as Leona. Leona died at her husband's hand. It took nearly 3 decades but she finally gets her revenge via Taylor's portrayal of Ellen in Night Watch.

As she waited for a break in the downpour, something heavy landed with a thud next to her. Dana worried someone had purposely thrown something. Undeterred, she quickly ran the remainder of the way to her workplace and grabbed her coat. A short time later, as she returned down the steps, Dana saw something wrapped in black plastic and grey masking tape. It had been discarded in the exact spot where she stood not fifteen minutes earlier. As she got closer, she recognised the object's shape. It looked like a human foot… (Part 1 of 2).*** LISTENER CAUTION IS ADVISED *** This episode was researched and written by Eileen Macfarlane.Edited by Joel Porter at Dot Dot Dot Productions.Script editing, additional writing, illustrations and production direction by Rosanna FittonNarration, audio editing assistance, script editing, and production direction by Benjamin Fitton.Become a ‘Patreon Producer' and get exclusive access to Season 1, early ad-free access to episodes, and your name in the podcast credits.
