It was a pogrom, the likes of which have not been seen in Europe since the days of World War Two. Or at least that is how corporate media across the world presented last month's violence in Amsterdam, as Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv came to play Ajax in football's Europa League. In total, five people were hospitalized, with a few dozen more minor injuries. And yet, the event generated hysteria across the West. President Biden, for example, described the supposed attacks against Israelis as “despicable,” adding that they “echo dark moments in history when Jews persecuted.”Dutch King Willem-Alexander, meanwhile, compared the events to the Holocaust.Yet even as public official after public official was denouncing the Dutch and spreading the persecution narrative, video clips showing a very different reality were going viral on social media, challenging the official story. On today's episode of “The Watchdog,” Lowkey catches up with an eyewitness to November's violence. Rachid El Ghazoui, better known as Appa, is a legend of Dutch hip hop. Active for over two decades, the rapper is known for his political content and his fierce criticism of racist Dutch politicians, such as Geert Wilders. His lyrics have made him a leading voice among the Moroccan community in the Netherlands.Appa tells a different story to Biden or King Willem-Alexander, presenting it as a tale of Israeli football thugs trashing a beautiful city, and then being challenged and overpowered by locals. As he told Lowkey:It actually started with the Maccabi Tel Aviv hooligans tearing up the streets, attacking people, throwing stuff at people, kicking people off their bikes, destroying taxis. Being hooligans, actually. They started singing racist songs in the main square, [about] killing Arabs and raping women”From there, the Israeli thugs were beaten back, and the resistance put up by locals – many of them of Moroccan descent – was treated as a vicious racist attack. Thus, what was a pretty typical case of European soccer hooliganism was transformed for political gain into a supposedly senseless anti-Semitic pogrom. The plot thickened even further after Israeli media revealed that Israel had sent many Mossad agents to Amsterdam who were present among the Maccabi fans.Ajax won the game 5-0.Support the showThe MintPress podcast, “The Watchdog,” hosted by British-Iraqi hip hop artist Lowkey, closely examines organizations about which it is in the public interest to know – including intelligence, lobby and special interest groups influencing policies that infringe on free speech and target dissent. The Watchdog goes against the grain by casting a light on stories largely ignored by the mainstream, corporate media.Lowkey is a British-Iraqi hip-hop artist, academic and political campaigner. As a musician, he has collaborated with the Arctic Monkeys, Wretch 32, Immortal Technique and Akala. He is a patron of Stop The War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Racial Justice Network and The Peace and Justice Project, founded by Jeremy Corbyn. He has spoken and performed on platforms from the Oxford Union to the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury. His latest album, Soundtrack To The Struggle 2, featured Noam Chomsky and Frankie Boyle and has been streamed millions of times.

Over the weekend there were viral rumors that the BBC has been on standby for an “extremely important” announcement from the Royal family “at any moment” in wake of the current health crisis. The supposed deadline has come and gone twice without such an announcement. Another variant of this rumor is that the annnoucnement would somehow address the line of successions. If something happens, we will of course bring it to you. With much of the media now breaking ranks and sharing every odd rumor going around, one fun tweet commented on a photo in which one of Rose Hanbury's children, Lord Oliver Cholmondeley was standing between William and Prince George. Oliver is older than George and served as a page at the Coronation of King Charles.Combine our first two news items and the rumor mill runs wild. Make of it what you will.During a royal engagement in his country last week, the King of The Netherlands, King Willem-Alexander, took a humorous jab at KateGate. While speaking to a group of children at the event, footage captured a moment where King Willem responded to a little girl's comment about having a photo with his entire family. His reply, infused with humor, was: "Really?... At least I didn't photoshop it," or something along those lines, we aren't that fluent in Dutch. The line sparked laughter among the attendees.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed strong relations between South Africa and Netherlands. He says strategic partnership between the two countries has evolved, matured and is increasingly of mutual benefit. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Kingdom of Netherlands are on a State Visit to South Africa. This is the second visit of a Dutch monarch since Queen Beatrix visited South Africa at the invitation of President Nelson Mandela in 1996.
About a month ago, Dr. Greg French left Canberra for The Hague, to start his new job as Australian Ambassador to the Netherlands. He seems to have already found his way; he bought a bike (and uses it a lot), he speaks Dutch pretty well, and was invited to visit King Willem-Alexander at Paleis Noordeinde. What does he like about the Netherlands, and how can Australia and the Netherlands benefit from each other? We also confronted the ambassador with some “impossible” dilemmas.

Episode Notes No, the UN Water Conference and the New York Water Week held in March of 2023 did not provide a silver bullet to solve the world's water problems: too much, too little, too dirty and too unequal. (Not that anyone really expected that…) But yes, they did raise the world's awareness of how acute the water emergency is. New York is giving a good example. In 2012 Hurricane Sandy got much too close for comfort. Ten years on, the city is moving ahead to recover and prepare for what is yet to come. And come it will. In this first episode of Water Talks, ‘Too close for comfort', we speak with King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, New York City Chief Climate Officer Rit Aggarwala and students at the Pratt Institute in New York who are creating a resilient future with design's newest tool: Artificial Intelligence. On April 30, it will be 10 years since (then) Queen Beatrix signed the act of abdication, followed by the coronation of her eldest son Willem-Alexander. How does royalty journalist Justine Marcella look back on ten years of King Willem-Alexander?
More evidence this week that the Netherlands is recovering from the coronavirus pandemic as people try to offload the jigsaw puzzles and DVDs they bought during lockdown on the King's Day street markets. The government has a clear-out of its munitions depots to support Ukraine's war effort, as Ukrainian refugees boost net migration in the first quarter of 2022. King Willem-Alexander finally makes it to Maastricht, while Amsterdam keeps up its Koningsdag tradition of imposing an alcohol limit that everyone ignores. And health minister Ernst Kuipers is urged to step up the long-term coronavirus plan to avoid a surge in infections, lockdowns and overcrowded attics next winter.
The countdown is on to the start of the Invictus Games that are taking place this year at The Hague in the Netherlands. The opening ceremony and a few sporting events take place on Easter Saturday, continuing thereafter up to the closing ceremony on Friday April 22nd, 2022. The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry and based on the US Warrior Games, are designed for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans. The idea is to use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and to generate a wider public understanding, acceptance and respect for those servicemen and women who are injured while serving their country. Meghan Markle accompanied Harry to the Sydney Games in 2018. We have heard that she will be travelling with Harry to the Hague Games this year. The Games will take place in the existing Zuiderpark or South Park in the Hague, an area established in the city in 1936, where recreational, sporting events and outdoor concerts are often held. Approximately 700 volunteers will be helping out during the week-long Games. So, what can you expect to see at the event? There will be the more traditional athletics, powerlifting, cycling, and swimming as well as wheelchair rugby, sitting volleyball, and one of my favourites the indoor rowing. This year, they have added a Land Rover Driving Challenge that sees competitors drive through a series of obstacles in the right order from start to finish – a bit like a horse-jumping event but using Land Rovers. Ticket prices to watch the competitions are modestly priced, with free access to other parts of the park and a Fanzone where the public can listen to music or take part in other side activities, all geared to accommodate people with disabilities.Dutch Royalty are also taking part. Princess Margriet is honorary chairman of the Committee of Recommendation of the Invictus Games The Hague 2020, and she will be present at the one and a half-hour opening ceremony, which includes the flag parade similar to what takes place at the opening ceremony at the Olympics. King Willem-Alexander will attend the closing ceremony. This will Meghan's first official trip outside of the United States since she and Harry stepped back as senior working royals. According to media reports she and Harry will be joined by a Netflix documentary crew. This makes perfect sense as we know from Meghan and Harry's Archewell website that their Archewell Production company is producing a documentary series called "Heart of Invictus," which will showcase stories about the Games, the competitors, and will follow some of the competitors on their journey leading up to and including taking part at The Hague 2020.It will be great to see Meghan and Harry back in action. There was only one question on everybody's lips on Prinsjesdag (aka Budget Day) this year, eclipsing even the speculation about Marianne Thieme's outfit or whether Wopke or Erik came up with the €50 billion special projects fund: would King Willem-Alexander be the first monarch to deliver his speech through a beard? We also reflect on the shocking murder of a lawyer on his doorstep in Amsterdam, the sad death of Fernando Ricksen at 43, a stunningly candid interview by the mayor of Amsterdam's partner and the slow process of detoxifying Zwarte Piet. Plus, find out why ophef rang out round the capital when one new resident complained to the council about his noisy neighbours.
It’s not a monumental proposal without the exceptional moment being accompanied by a remarkable diamond engagement ring. The most expensive royal engagement rings in the world are in possession of the royals and the public loves to talk about them. So herewith Peter Wilson in Rocky River - a Certified Gemologist at Howard's Jewelry Center in Cleveland, let's explore 5 unique and most expensive royal engagement rings of all times. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark Crown Princess of Denmark, Mary's freakish royal engagement ring. It highlighted an evaluated one and a half–carat emerald-cut diamond flanked by two emerald-cut rubies says Peter Wilson in Rocky River. And since her matrimony, she has supplemented two supplementary diamond baguettes on both sides of the rubies. Crown Prince Frederik chose to give this ring to symbolize the shades of the Danish emblem. Depending on the essence and precise aspects of the diamond and gemstones, it has been estimated that the cost of the innovative ring will be around $25,000 to $30,000. Meghan Markle's Ring The ring that the Prince represented to his wife Meghan was particularly customized by him. According to Peter Wilson in Cleveland, the ring featured a 5-carat diamond that is framed with two 0.75 carat round diamonds. It is also said that the ring was made from Princess Diana's personal collection. Also, the ring is modernized from a unique traditional strap style with diamonds. The middle jewel's Botswana origin is studious of Prince Harry and Meghan’s peculiar relationship with the country and their bestowed devotion to social and environmental accountability. The cost of the ring is estimated to be $120,000. Queen Maxima's Royal Engagement Ring Queen Maxima is incipiently from Argentina, but now she is the Goddess of the Netherlands. She was proposed by now King Willem-Alexander with an oval-shaped diamond ring. This ring is also in the color that symbolizes the national color of the Netherlands, orange. There is no erudition about the specific price because the ring is unprecedented and the gem is rare, so the approximated value of the ring is between $20,000 and $200,000. Queen Victoria's Ring Throughout her reign in the 19th Century, it was customary for a female monarch, due to her extraordinary status, to propose to her prospective fiancé. Queen Victoria’s royal engagement ring, by today’s measures, had a freakish and somewhat inquisitive design – a serpent. It may appear like an incredible leitmotif for a ring that signifies love, but serpents at the time signified wisdom, integrity, and responsibility. The ring had a mix of jewels, rubies, and diamonds set in it. Also, it was colorful like her personality. Queen Elizabeth's Royal Engagement Ring In the year 1947 Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten bestowed to Queen Elizabeth with an embroidered and vintage diamond engagement ring. The delicate platinum ring showcases a three-carat diamond flanked on every side by five more petite diamonds. Before he intended the proposal, Prince Philip put a lot of insight into the design of the ring to combine emotional value to the engagement ring. He incorporated a series of diamonds from a tiara his mother, Princess Alice wore back in the day. The ring is absolutely an exceptional piece of jewelry that most unquestionably ads to the Queen’s diamond collection.

I include this so you may plan your beach days or schedule accordingly. The news section is probably the most sparse area of this podcast. This is because I usually only include topics which are relevant to us visitors or tourists. One thing that should be of interest to all visitors of the island is safety and I will discuss how the island strengthened their security measures by using the technology available at their disposal. I will also talk about the safety of the wildlife and the state of the water in Aruba. If there’s anything at all that you would like to suggest for the show or simply want to relay feedback, please do send me an email at curt@onehappypodcast.com or drop a voice message on our hotline number (302) 635-0815. Quick note, I would like to apologize in advance for next week because This Week in Aruba will be posted a day later as I will be out of town.
Open this story on izi.travel The water of Prinsengracht is always full of boats on sunny days, but once or twice a year it is really busy. That's when the canals of Amsterdam are the scene of popular festivals. For instance, an annual concert is held on Prinsengracht, where you are standing now. An orchestra on a floating stage plays classical songs from the previous century and of course, the canal is packed with boats full of people who come to listen. Once a year, there is a really, really big party on the canals: ‘Koningsdag' or King's Day, a national holiday. Until recently, the same day was called ‘Koninginnedag' or Queen's Day, but King Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother, Princess Beatrix, in 2013, and so the name was changed from Queen's day to King's Day. Many Dutch people come to Amsterdam specifically to celebrate this national day of celebration and the canals are chock-a-block with party-goers dressed in orange. If you want to see what King's Day is like in the canal ring, watch the video.
Open this story on izi.travel Now you are back on Dam Square, the beginning and the end of your trail. As we explained at the beginning of the walk, this square is the symbolic heart of the city and of the Netherlands. And the Dutch royal family have an important aspect of this: Dam Square is the place where all the national celebrations, like royal marriages and investitures, past and present, are held. The celebrations are not just held on the square, but in the buildings that line the square too, such as the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), which you can see on your right. In 2013, the enthronement of King Willem-Alexander took place here on Dam Square, making him Monarch of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and spoke to the people on the square from the balcony of the palace. Afterwards, in the Nieuwe Kerk, he was formally installed as king. It was one huge, day-long party for everyone here on Dam Square. If you would like to see some impressions of that day, you can watch the video. Finish the trail by returning to the Monument on Dam Square, and reflect a little on your I-Tour of the ‘Venice of the Low Countries', which showed you all the highlights of Amsterdam's canal ring. If you would like to see more of Amsterdam and its environs, please take a look at the App, which contains various I-Tours of Amsterdam and the neighbouring towns.

April 30th 2013 - we have a new King! After 33 years Queen Beatrix (1938) is now... King Willem-Alexander (1967) and Máxima (1971) of course as his Queen. Reason enough for us to play some tracks on this very special day today and welcome you to an Orange-tinted country. To celebrate the past and future: it’s the Final Queensday in The Netherlands. “Lieve Moeder...” words by Willem-Alexander to thank Beatrix, his mother, is followed by a remarkable track performed by Krister Linder. There’s only one way to experience this song: play it loud! So many tones and details, so much beauty can be heard and the voice of the heart comes from Krister. Superbe! Sonne, ist das neue Schiller album. Guten Abend! After watching the Bluray we just wanted to treat you with at least two tracks; Revelation and Berlin/Moskau can be found on the latest album ‘Sonne’. You can buy the release in many variations, from deluxe till super-deluxe. The typical Schiller style, just very spacey, great sounding and perfectly mixed. We have one suggestion though: Schiller should pay more attention to his live performances in the sense of keeping those acts more compact, more to-the-point and having a tempting climax, all within 90 minutes. Possible? Just a thought. The F.D. Project plays ‘The Outro’ and has the old-style sound and vibes, never boring, always pleasant to listen to. We found the release from a couple of years ago ; ‘Song for the Phoenix’ by System 7, the band based around Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy; they started in the 90’s with their typical sound-baths as we call them... tons of sounds, tons of patterns, delays, hypnotic ingredients and .. fat and pumping bases! The ‘Phoenix’ track is one you will never hear on the radio, read our lips. Therefore we wanted to give you this hint so you can enjoy their album ‘Phoenix’ as we do. East of France, Mulhouse, the Hypnotique LIVE sessions part 4. Released via Ultimae.com - in one word: brilliant LIVE stuff! So very well mixed and mastered; SCANN-TEC delivers an outstanding piece of art, the sounds of man (Vladislav) and his machinery (too much to mention). Go get this one today! We’re completey lost in time now... listening to Asheni you simply have to admit: life sucks sometimes. Or is it good to know the pain, then to understand Quality Time even better? You decide. Asheni’s voice is fabulous. She (from Spain?) can be found on the iTunes Store to keep things simple. Like it was meant to be... Krister comes back again, his track ‘Ghostfriend’ sounds like an answer to the ‘Lost in Time’ track. Enjoy this flow... The track comes from the album ‘Songs from the Silent Years’ which we got from Krister personally when we visited London back in 2006, we had a meeting, small chat, hands and this CD, just before a LIVE gig. Thank you Krister! We’re still proud of your music. We’d like to thank our supporters, our donators, our executive producers. Wanna join the team? Please feel free to support the Spacemusic podcast.
