Charles II, King of England, Scotland & Ireland from 1660 to 1685 is one of the most notorious lotharios in history. He loved the ladies and took both noble women and commoner actresses to bed, sometimes multiple times a day. And the ladies were certainly up for it. In addition to enjoying the charming sovereign's company, they also enjoyed the gifts, estates, and noble titles he lavished upon them and their children. Last week we met Charles's 14 known mistresses. Today we'll meet the results of all that sensual behavior, the King's 13 recognized illegitimate children. To his sons he granted Dukedoms and Earldoms and for his daughters he arranged marriages to the wealthiest noble bachelors. The King personally populated a new generation of English peers. But despite his lusty libido, Charles didn't have a single legitimate child to inherit his throne. When he died and his unpopular brother became King James II many in the nation looked to his eldest illegitimate son as a possible alternative monarch and rebellion ensued. Let's meet King Charles II's 13 Illegitimate Children... Charles II, King of England, Scotland & Ireland from 1660 to 1685 is one of the most notorious lotharios in history. The swarthy sovereign started early and continued making love, sometimes multiple times a day, until the week he died at 54. His court was famous for it's flagrant hedonism and he took both noble ladies and commoner actresses to bed. The women were certainly up for it. They took advantage of the charming King's affections to gain wealth and power they would never have had access to otherwise. Those who were fortunate enough to bare the King one of his 13 illegitimate children saw their offspring elevated to the peerage. When Queen Elizabeth II and her family went on vacation, they didn't fly coach or take a carnival cruise. They traveled in style aboard Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia. The Queen designed the ship herself the year of her coronation. This was her favorite place to be, where she could truly unwind. I recently had the opportunity to tour this historic yacht in Edinburgh, Scotland. And to talk with the Yotties who served the Queen while she traveled the world. Let's explore this floating time capsule, learn how it functioned, find out where the royals visited, what they ate, how they slept and relaxed. I'll dish on the four honeymoons which took place on board, and we'll be treated to an intimate glimpse of the British royal family at their most relaxed, while on vacation! Leeds Castle has been called the loveliest castle in England and it certainly lives up to the name. The elegant stone keep, towers, and crenelated battlements surrounded by a tranquil moat, beautiful gardens and lush parkland are exactly what you would picture as an idealized medieval castle. Across the centuries, it has often been strong women who have owned, enjoyed, renovated and defended Leeds castle. It was the tranquil retreat for generations of medieval Queens, the scene of a deadly stand-off between great ladies, a prison for two accused royal witches, and a luxurious playground for aristocrats and Hollywood stars. I have fond memories of coming her as a child, and I'm excited to be back. So come with me as we explore this tranquil castle and it's scandalous history! Queen Eleanor of Castile Queen Margaret of France Queen Isabella of France Queen Anne of Bohemia Queen Joan of Navarre Queen Catherine of Valois Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester Queen Catherine of Aragon Olive, Lady Baillie Leeds Castle did not comp my stay, so this is not a paid promotion. Louis XIV, King of France from 1638 to 1715, ruled over the court at Versailles with the sheer magnetism of his personality. All were desperate to be in the light of the sun king. The deliciously witty drama series ‘The Great' tells the occasionally true story of Catherine II, Empress of Russia. It's a wonderful example of why historic dramas should be taken as entertainment, not a history lesson. While playing fast and loose with history it actually sanitizes a lot of the scandal in her life by transforming Peter into a romantic antihero and making Catherine fall in love with him. In reality Catherine didn't keep Peter around for a ‘will they, won't they' Hollywood romance. Her lover promptly strangled him in prison. Catherine the Great knew how to use her charm and sexuality, the only tools available to a woman of her time, both for her own advancement and her own pleasure. And while I love the great, it so far only captures a fraction of her true greatness. So let's take a peek inside the imperial boudoir and get to know the Empress, her twisted relationship with Peter and her many lovers a little more intimately. And we'll address that horrid rumor about the horse. The public loves a good story about the salacious private lives of the rich and famous. And royals often really did get up to some jaw-dropping behaviors. But sometimes a grain of rumor can be so enthralling that it snowballs into an unshakable myth. If you ask the average person what they know about Catherine the Great they are likely to say “Isn't she the one who was crushed under a horse?” Many are still convinced that Queen Elizabeth I was really a man. And Marie Antionette will forever be linked with the misquote “Let them eat cake!” Today let's explore 10 commonly believed myths about historic royals, examine how the rumors got started and separate what is gospel from what is just gossip. Anne Boleyn was a Witch with 6 Fingers Mary I was Bloody Mary Elizabeth I was actually a Man Queen Juana was Loca Marie Antoinette said “Let Them Eat Cake” Catherine the Great Loved Horse, Literally Napoleon told Josephine “I will return in three days. Don't wash!” Prince Albert had a Prince Albert Piercing Prince Albert Victor was really Jack the Ripper Elizabeth II had 4 cocktails a day Check out the History Tea Time Podcast: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7iW8gOI5wb5TNFAIhBd9Om?si=46aeeacd64214ac0 Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/history-tea-time/id1619978406 Google: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy84Yzg1ZWU5MC9wb2RjYXN0L3Jzcw Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Charlotte went from minor German country gentry to Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. Charlotte stayed out of politics as her husband lost the American revolution, and she lost her dear friend, Marie Antoinette in the French revolution. Charlotte made numerous cultural contributions including introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and throwing the first debutante ball. In her later years she had to watch as her husband slipped into mental illness and her children struggled to produce a new generation of royals. The story of George Villiers and King James I & VI reads like a stylish, sexy and scandalous historic drama series. It probably hasn't been made into one before because, until recently, Hollywood wasn't too keen on portraying homosexual characters and relationships, authentically. However, the new Starz series, Mary and George promises to finally introduce the wider world to the dashing country commoner who won the heart of a king and was raised so high he had no where to go but plummeting back to earth. The series emphasises George's relationship with his ambitions mother, Mary who encouraged and facilitated his royal seduction. So let's travel back to the Stuart court of England and meet the real Mary and George Villiers. Get out your cups and saucers, because I will be spilling a lot of tea with this one. Throughout history, across cultures and in every walk of life, there have always been people whose identity went beyond the two-gender mold. Popular historic dramas like Bridgerton, Hamilton and Sanditon sometimes receive criticism that their diverse casts are historically inaccurate. But in fact there have been people of color in Britain and France since Roman times. By the 18th century the trans Atlantic slave trade brought more people of African decent to Europe then ever before. In 1768 there were about 15,000 black people living in London. Many were brought their as enslaved servants and sailors. But some had the right mixture of talent and luck to rise to the upper echelons of society, becoming celebrities and even aristocrats. Today we'll met 7 prominent people of African and mixed heritage who lived in Britain or France in the 18th Century. Among them a King's secret daughter, an icon of both Sport and music, two authors who spoke out against slavery, and a lady of wealth and refinement who would have fit perfectly into the world of Bridgerton. Here are their stories... In addition to being the Queen of the United Kingdom and the vast British Empire, Victoria might also be lauded as the Queen of Christmas. She and her beloved husband Prince Albert popularized many of the quintessential holiday traditions that we still enjoy today including the Christmas tree, Christmas cards and Christmas Crackers. Their 9 children enjoyed trees decorated with delectable dainties like sugar plums, candy canes and gingerbread. And many new delicious dishes were added to the traditional medieval fare on the royal holiday dining table including roast Turkey, chestnuts and plum pudding. Let's take a look at the history of how these holiday foods made it on to her majesty's table and enjoy a fabulously festive feast, fit for a Queen. Josephine went from the daughter of a Caribbean plantation owner to the wife of a prominent French aristocrat. After her husband was guillotined during the revolution, she caught the eye of an up and coming soldier named Napoleon. He wrote her romantic letters while conquering much of Europe and when he became Emperor of France he made her his Empress. But his consuming passion for her also led to some serious relationship problems. Her inability to provide him with an heir ultimately led him to leave her for a younger princess. The Tudors ruled over England from the unlikely battlefield victory of King Henry VII in 1485; through the 6 wives of heinous Henry VIII and his three children's desperate fights over the throne; to the agonizing death of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. The family's tragic interpersonal drama, and penchant for beheading anyone who got in their way have inspired a number of chilling ghost stories. So lock the door, turn down the lights, light a candle and pour yourself a bloody Mary. Together, lets step briefly off the relatively firm ground of historic record and into the misty realms of legend, hearsay and the supernatural as we recount the Ghastly Ghost Stories of the Terrible Tudors... Male-preference primogeniture and salic law have meant that most European monarchs have been men. Queen regnants are exceedingly rare in history. But for 90 years from 1890 to 1980 The Netherlands was reigned over by three successive Queens. Wilhelmina inherited the throne after the early deaths of all three of her brothers, Juliana because she was an only child and Beatrix because she was the eldest of 4 sisters. These Queens were heroes of the first and second world wars, the first female billionaires, courted controversy with their choices of husbands and friends and won the admiration of their people with their down-to-earth style. King George III of Great Britain and of Ireland and his German wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had a close and loving relationship which resulted in an astonishing 15 Children! The couple preferred a quiet life at home to court social life. George was relatively down to earth and far more involved with his children than previous generations of royals. He enjoyed tumbling around on the floor with his brood and playing games with them in the garden. Charlotte loved her children dearly but was more strict and formal than her husband. Having so many royal children was at once a blessing and a curse. If you think Queen Elizabeth's 4 children cause a lot of scandal and cost tax payers too much money, multiply that by 3.75! And while having an heir and so many spares should have secured the line of succession. But the King and Queen were over-protective of their daughters and resisted allowing them to marry. The called Kew palace the nunnery and had romances with palace staff. The sons were far to interested in their mistresses to contract legal royal marriages and produce legitimate children. Towards the end of King George's life he didn't have a single legitimate grandchild, and parliament had to bribe the middle aged princes to finally walk down the aisle. The result was Queen Victoria who had to deal with the bad reputations her many wicked aunts and uncles and some serious family drama. Let's meet King George and Queen Charlotte's 9 sons and 6 daughters... Just in time for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story - here is the real story of the iconic Queen! The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is a once in a generation event which will go down in history. But will it go down for all the wrong reasons? The coronation has been surrounded by a number of controversies from what the royals will wear to who will and will not be attending. All of these quarrels really come down to a thousand year old institution, marred in outdated dogma and dripping in stolen jewels, clashing with a modern world in which people no longer revere royalty and many are struggling to live. Add in the fact that the stars of the show, Charles and Camilla are not nearly as well liked as the late Queen or the next generation, Will and Kate and we have a hotbed of coronation controversy. Let's examine the many centuries old disputes and modern contentious issues which have, so far marred the coronation. Including a few which the media haven't been picking over, but maybe they should. King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Their relationship has long been lauded as a royal fairytale. But there was a lot more going on. Wallis never really liked Edward but became trapped by her own ambition. And Edward, desperate to find any mode of escaping the insurmountable pressure of his birth rite, became obsessed with the woman who dominated him. And they were both Nazi sympathizers. The abdication of a King who wasn't allowed by the church to marry a divorced woman was not nearly that simple. And the crisis that almost ended the British monarchy likely saved it in the end... Queen Elizabeth II's 4 children have given her 8 grandchildren. While her children were the first generation of royals to have their lives laid bare for public scrutiny, her grandchildren grew up in the limelight and have a better handle on it. The Queen's children and their scandals nearly brought about the downfall of the monarchy. But the next generation has brought a resurgence in its popularity as young royals aim to position themselves as more genuine and down to earth, despite having a monarch for a grandmummy. Lets take a look at the mostly charmed lives of the 8 royal grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II with updates on what they've been up to in the last few years: Prince William, Duke of Cambridge Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex Peter Phillips Zara Phillips Tindall Princess Beatrice Princess Eugenie Lady Louise Windsor James, Viscount Severn Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is mother to four children: Charles, Prince of Wales Anne, Princess Royal Prince Andrew, Duke of York Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex The famously stoic monarch is unsurprisingly not a warm and affectionate mother. As the children grew up so did the media. Tabloids and television demanded more insight into the lives of the royal family than ever before. The mystical reverence for monarchy was lost and the Queen's children became real-life soap stars as the press hungrily followed their every triumph and tragedy. The privileged princes and princess were expected to be charming yet accessible and to exemplify a perfect family life. Standards that, through divorce and scandal proved impossible to live up to. Ten hereditary monarchies still survive in Europe. These royal rulers are seen as figure heads and public faces for their countries. They generate good will and patriotism and are involved in charity work but most are barred from holding any tangible government power. Royals throughout history are notorious for inbreeding. But the European royal family by far infamously incestuous were the Habsburgs (Hapsburgs). The royal house ruled Spain from 1506 to 1700 and held the Holy Roman Empire from 1452 until 1806. These two branches of the family vollied brides back and forth like ping pong balls. Cousins married cousins and uncles married nieces. All in the name of keeping wealth and power in the family and keeping their blood blue. They were oblivious to the havoc all this intermarrying was playing on their genetics. The tragic results were numerous family members with mental illness, intellectual disability, vulnerability to diseases, and a famously unusual continence which came to be known as the Hapsburg Jaw. Just how inbred where the Habsburgs? Short answer, very. Long answer, well, let's get into it! E, soprattutto, cosa ci dicono - e perché dovremmo guardarle? Celebrate Bryce's 32nd birthday as he asks just who is funding all these rioters and looters across the country, and why no one seems to be asking. Take a dive into the total and blatant hypocrisy of our elected officials across the country, as they go full Marie Antionette and leave the rest of us to eat cake, prompting the serious need to vote beyond republicans and democrats. Finally, round back to the rioters and examine just how dangerous of an idea letting them loose the way the left has really is and why.Today's Music:12 Concertos à cinque, Op. 9 - Concerto for Oboe & Strings in d minor No. 2 composed by Tomaso Albinoni and performed by The Modena Chamber Orchestra is licensed under a Public Domain License (http://bit.ly/PublicDomain1-0) https://musopen.org Music promoted by Royalty Free Music Library: https://youtu.be/hdyHOuIvaxoBrandenburg Concerto No4-1 BWV1049 - Classical Whimsical by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) It is a game of balls, estates, sly glances, and turns about the garden. At least on the surface. But underneath, it is a game of social ambition, family obligation and breathtaking, heart-stopping longing.Attribution Editing help provided by Tony Aguad.Brandenburg Concerto No4-1 BWV1049 - Classical Whimsical by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licenseSourceArtistCanon in D Major by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licenseSourceArtistEgmont Overture by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution licenseSourceArtistIPMFind transcripts on our website:internationalpodcastmonth.com/transcriptsFollow us on Twitter: @podmonthSupport us:Via Ko-FiVia Paypal.meIntro and Outro music is Morning Dew by LiQWYD

When facing difficulties, don't think of them as setbacks, think of them like labor waves. You are giving birth to a dream, and each surge of pain indicates progress, not failure. There will be hard times, and good times. Difficulties sometimes come in waves, but they always pass. It's the rhythm of life. Listen to this audio to understand why it's ALL good.
