"I don't like the phrase 'meet people where they are.' If you only do that, it's too easy for everyone to settle. Instead, I try to meet them a half-step ahead—and take them on a field trip to what's possible."In this episode, Jim and Sander talk about the pursuit of mastery, how to inspire growth, and why being too comfortable can kill progress. From Van Gogh's late start to corporate energy vampires, this conversation is part therapy, part stand-up, and -as usual- fully human. In this heartfelt and candid episode, Sander and Jim meet up at the Xebia studio for a conversation that blends humor, vulnerability, and inspiration. They unpack what it means to pursue mastery, how creativity emerges in unlikely places, and why many of us wrestle with the pressure of "starting too late." The dynamic duo reflects on Jim's experiences from the Van Gogh Museum, shares personal goals like writing a book and dives deep into what success truly means—especially when you feel like time is slipping away. They also tackle workplace dynamics, including how to deal with energy vampires on teams, giving and receiving feedback effectively, and staying authentic even when the work gets tough.Check out our sponsor:www.xebia.comwww.scrummatch.comwww.wiserbees.comwww.masteringagility.orgHosted by Ausha. Next month, the German artist Anselm Kiefer will be 80, and the first of a number of shows internationally to mark this landmark moment opened this week at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK. It focuses on his early works, and Ben Luke visits Oxford to discuss this pivotal moment in his career with Lena Fritsch, the curator of the exhibition. The latest edition of the biennial in the United Arab Emirate of Sharjah opened earlier this month. The Art Newspaper's correspondent Dale Berning Sawa visited during opening week and spoke to Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, the president and director of Sharjah Art Foundation, which runs the biennial, about this year's edition, her journey in art, and her role in establishing the biennial as a leading art world event. And this episode's Work of the Week is Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto (1901) by Pablo Picasso, a painting from the artist's Blue Period. Conservators at The Courtauld Institute in London have discovered an image of a mystery woman hidden beneath this portrait of De Soto, Picasso's friend and fellow artist. We talk to Barnaby Wright, deputy head of The Courtauld Gallery, about the painting and the image beneath it. The work features in a new exhibition at the gallery, Goya to Impressionism. A painting purchased for 50 dollars at a garage sale in Minnesota that some believe is an unknown portrait by Vincent Van Gogh is tearing the art world apart. Experts with New York-based LMI Group, an art research firm, believe the Dutch artist painted the portrait during his stay at a psychiatric hospital in the south of France in 1889, and that it could be worth 15 million dollars. But some in the art world disagree. Last Friday, the Van Gogh Museum denied the painting's attribution to Van Gogh. Robert Snell, the co-owner and painting specialist at Revere Auctions in St. Paul, joined Minnesota Now to talk about the dramatic saga unfolding in the art world.

Lieve vrienden, You're in for a wild ride...

As Frieze Los Angeles opens its fifth iteration, The Art Newspaper's associate digital editor, Alexander Morrison, talks to our correspondent in LA, Jori Finkel about the changing landscape of the city's art scene. In London, the Royal Academy has finally opened an exhibition dedicated to the 18th-century painter Angelica Kauffman, a show that was threatened with cancellation as Covid ravaged the plans and finances of museums. We take a tour of the exhibition with its co-curator, Annette Wickham. And this episode's Work of the Week is The Space Between Trees (2019), the late Canadian-Chinese painter Matthew Wong's direct response to a lost masterpiece by Vincent van Gogh, The Painter on the Road to Tarascon (1888). The connection between the two artists is explored in a new exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Painting as a Last Resort. Its curator, Joost van der Hoeven, tells us more.Frieze Los Angeles, until Sunday, 3 March, Santa Monica Airport, Los Angeles.Angelica Kauffman, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1 March - 30 June.Matthew Wong | Vincent van Gogh: Painting as a Last Resort, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, 1 March-1 September. Allen and Joel recap their experience at the 2023 Blades Europe Forum, discussing key differences between the European and American wind industries. They touch on topics like thermal imaging for blade inspections, EU-funded blade research projects focused on actionable results, perspectives on the value of FSAs, and handling the data deluge from modern turbine sensors. They also recount visiting Aerones' extensive Riga facilities, detailing how the drone services provider has grown into a sizable global operation. Overall, they found Blades Europe to be more academically focused than the American version and gained several useful wind industry insights from the Amsterdam conference. And that was one of the cooler things we saw in Amsterdam. We didn't have a long time there, but it was fascinating to see the self portraits. That was the little highlight was a bunch of self portraits by Van Gogh of himself, with the ear, without the ear. Both ears, both still there. Yeah. And he looked like a guy from Northern Europe, right? So there's an early, there's actually a photograph of him as, I don't know, 18, 19 year old kid, and he's like clean shaven. He's got both ears. He looks like a person you'd run into on the street today. A lot of tourists come through Amsterdam, of course, a lot of UK youth that we noticed were running around having a good time and good for them. But yeah, a crazy week on the road. We spent the whole week over in Europe. We went to Amsterdam, we went to Riga, Latvia, and then we ended our tour in Copenhagen for a night. So a whirlwind tour and stay tuned because we have a lot to discuss about Blades Europe Forum. Welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. I am your host, Allen Hall, and I'm here with Joel Saxum. And we just got back from Blades Europe Forum 2023 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. And we sat through all the sessions, at least the vast majority of them, so that you didn't have to. And we wanted to touch on some of the highlights that we saw at the Blades Europe forum. Because there was a lot of good information there and a lot of good discussion points. And as Joel and I discussed in between sessions and at dinner the United States and Europe are going in different directions. And I wrote a LinkedIn post about it, which got a lot of traffic. So we should talk about that too, Joel, while we're at it. Joel Saxum: Like Allen was saying, one of the things we notice here is, okay the audience at Blades USA, when you're there, if you're in the Blades world in the United States, you've probably been to Blades USA, or at least one of your colleagues has. The reason being is it's a lot of operators, right? So there's performance engineers, there's an eng, performance analysts. There's blade engineers, there's mechanical engineers, there's all these asset managers. There's the people responsible for making sure that the blades are running on. Your wind farms are at blades. You Blades, USA, right? I think, what was the last year, about 200 people there Allen in, in Austin? Allen Hall: Yeah, maybe a little more. Joel Saxum: Yeah, so to get a little bit of a different view on it this event is, you would think, an on the outside of carbon copy. Haymarket puts on this, it's through Wind Power Monthly. Blades USA, Blades Europe. Same logos,

The Photo Vault: A journey into Vernacular Photography, Archives and Photobooks
In this episode, we have the great pleasure to meet with Professor Geoffrey Batchen, an expert in the history of photography. He has taught in his native Australia, the United States, and currently holds a position at Oxford in the UK as a professor of the history of art. He has curated exhibitions in renowned institutions such as the ICP in New York, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and the Izu Photo Museum in Shizuoka, Japan.Geoffrey is one of the popularisers of the term Vernacular Photography through his extensive writing and involvement in the field. We recorded this conversation during a conference on Vernacular Photography organised by the Eidolon Centre in Budapest.Geoffrey talks about how to look at images, emphasising that there is no such thing as banal, and delves into the significance of smiles in photographs. He also touches on the question of where Vernacular fits in our historical narrative and discusses the dangers of assigning financial value to everyday images.Read more about Geoffrey Batchen's work.Geoffrey Batchen: Forget Me Not: Photography & RemembranceNegative/Positive A History of Photography bookApparitions: Photography and Dissemination bookVernacular photographies essayFurther links:Eidolon Center BudapestFortpan Archive BudapestMalick SidibéFollow us on Instagram:@Vernacular Social Club@Lukas BirkBecome a Vernacular Social Club member

We have confirmation that bug fixes for the Teal Mask DLC are coming early October. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam launched a collaboration with Pokémon over the next couple months resulting in what seemed to be a Black Friday rush over a new Pikachu card. This rush also seemed to cause a rush on Pokémon Center's website causing disappointment for most fans attempting to get in on this collaboration. Rotterdam was in shock this week after three people were shot dead in an apparent revenge attack by a medical student who had been taken to court for mistreating animals. In the election campaign, Pieter Omtzigt unveiled his list of candidates for his Nieuw Sociaal Contract party, while Esther Ouwehand stepped aside as PvdD leader for the good of the party. There are fireworks at Ajax but no celebrations as the Klassieker is postponed, fans go on the rampage and director of football Sven Mislintat is sent packing. A US chemical company faces a huge bill after it is held liable for high levels of pollution near Dordrecht. And one of the most unlikely mashups of recent years goes down a storm as Pokémon fans catch all the merchandise at the Van Gogh Museum.

Best Day Trips from Amsterdam (Podcast) - explore the palaces, castles, windmills, parks, and history of the Netherlands https://amateurtraveler.com/best-day-trips-from-amsterdam/ Hear about day trips from Amsterdam as the Amateur Traveler talks to Gopinath from greetingsfromeurope.com about his adopted country. Gopinath argues that too many people only spend a couple of the Netherlands before traveling on to see more of Europe. He lays out a week's worth of day trips that one can make from Amsterdam. He recommends the following places to visit: Located in Gelderland, the Palais Het Loo is often associated with Queen Wilhelmina. Explore its impressive architecture, gardens, and the connection between the Dutch royal family and this palace. Drive from the Palace at Low towards Amsterdam, and you'll come across Muiderslot Castle, dating back to the 13th century, making it the oldest accessible site for visitors in the Netherlands. It's conveniently located less than half an hour from Amsterdam. You can reach the castle by car, public transport, or even take a ferry from Amsterdam in the summertime, adding a unique touch to your visit, as the castle sits at the meeting point of the River Vecht and the South Sea. Nearby, you'll find the old star fortress city of Naarden, just two miles from Muiderslot Castle. While the city's layout may not be as impressive in person as it appears from an aerial view, it still offers a charming Dutch town experience with few tourists. Additionally, the small town of Muiden, just a minute from the castle, is worth a visit, featuring monumental and historic buildings, a beautiful marina, and picturesque views of the River Vecht and the South Sea. Located in Baarn, Castle Groeneveld is a grand estate with beautiful gardens. Giethoorn, a charming small village in the eastern part of the Netherlands, is approximately an hour and a half from Amsterdam and is often referred to as the "Dutch Venice." This picturesque place is famous for its canals and bridges. What sets Giethoorn apart is the wide canals, a result of historical peat extraction. Renting a boat is highly recommended. Drive back to Amsterdam over one of the closure dykes to get a glimpse at how the Dutch have reclaimed so much of their country from the sea. Feiluwa National Park park is known for its greenery and is popular with locals. It lacks the typical mountains and valleys found in U.S. national parks, but that just makes it better to explore by bike from its fleet of bikes. The historical hunting lodge in the park features a viewpoint tower and scenic lakeside views. The Kroller Muller Museum in the park houses a significant collection of art, especially from Van Gogh, making it a great alternative to the crowded Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Kinderdijk is a UNESCO heritage site known for its 19 windmills. Take a boat ride and a glimpse into Dutch history and water management. North of Amsterdam are the Dutch Golden Age cities of Horn and Enkhuizen with rich history, including impressive buildings, and the Zuiderzee Museum. Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum near Amsterdam showcasing the Zaandam region's industrial and cultural heritage, including windmills and Dutch traditions. Gopinath also recommends you visit fishing villages like Volendam and Edam, known for their maritime history and cheese production. These day trips offer a mix of historical landmarks, picturesque landscapes, and royal connections, providing a diverse and enriching experience in the Netherlands.
