Have you ever gotten a seed packet and wondered how those seeds made it to you? Or what an organic seed really is? Or what 'heirloom' means? Well today we get to learn all about seeds with THE Renee from Renee's Garden today. Her company offers flower, veggie, and herb seeds specifically for home gardeners, with a huge host of cool offerings that they test in their trial gardens in California and Vermont. I ask Renee all the questions about trialing, sourcing, and selling the seeds that so many gardeners grow from, what she's excited about in her trial garden this year, her recommendations for new growers, her favorite flowers she grows at home, and so much more. I loved hearing her advice after having been in the industry so long, and her perspective on how gardening connects us to different cultures and history. I learned so much from this conversation and hope you will too! Follow along with Renee's Garden on Instagram @reneesgardenseeds.  In the intro, I get into some of the specific varieties of flowers I've sourced from Renee's Garden, and some recent updates from my garden and small floral design business. The Flower Friends Flower Fact is about hellebores this week, so listen in to learn something new! Stay til the end for the song of the week, which you can also find on the Spotify Flower Friends Song of the Week playlist.Subscribe to the Flower Friends pod wherever you get your podcasts, and follow along on Instagram at @flowerfriendspodcast, and with Sarah at @growgirlseattle. Renee Shepherd is back with us again today. Renee and her husband, who were both homeschooled, are now homeschooling their six children. She is currently finishing her graduate degree in Classical Christian Studies at New Saint Andrews College, where her favorite things to study are theology, Latin, and literature. Renee brought a lesser known article by Dorothy Sayers to our attention, and that’s what Mystie and Brandy are discussing with her today. We think you will be interested in how it rounds out what Sayers said in her well known Lost Tools of Learning. *** Spring Training is coming up later this month! Visit smartpots.com/fred for a money-saving offer on the original, award-winning fabric planter, made in the USA.Ladies and gentlemen, this is how we water a plant. No! Don’t hit pause! Really, we have some tips about watering your garden that just might be new to you, no matter how many years you’ve held a garden hose! College horticulture professor Debbie Flower explains how correct watering can lead to healthier container plants, and that includes using the right equipment, including a water nozzle that's thorough, yet gentle. Debbie teaches us how to count...a vital function for applying the right amount of water (you might be surprised to learn how high you'll have to count for a plant in a one-gallon container). We talk with Renee Shepherd of Renee’s Garden seed company, about a dependable, beautiful, tasty leafy green for the summer that you can easily grow in a vegetable or ornamental garden: Swiss Chard. And, she shares a recipe using chard from her latest book, Renee's Garden Cookbook. Automate, Elevate, Eliminate, Delegate: those are the keys to several effective garden time savers, or just to make it easier on your mind and body whenever you head out into the yard. We talk about the benefits of raised beds, updating your irrigation control system, keeping fruit trees short, plus a real time-saver: removing part (or all) of your lawn to make room for an edible/ornamental garden, using soil solarization or sheet mulching. It’s all in Episode 16 of Garden Basics with Farmer Fred, and we’ll save you some time here, too… You’ll get your ears back in under 30 minutes.
