#49: Why Are Students Required to Take General Education (or “Core Curriculum”) Courses?

Why do universities require students to take classes in the humanities during their first few years? Dr. David Horner, who has taught these classes for many years, helps us see the wisdom of requiring these courses, in light of the value they bring to the student who takes them seriously. Dave earned his master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Oxford University, is a professor of philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, and is the author of (among other books) the popular Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well. In this podcast we discuss: How Dave got interested in studying the humanities How apologetics (defenses of the faith) helped him overcome a crisis of faith in college What the “humanities” are and how they relate to humans, being “humane,” and being a “humanist” Understanding a “College of Liberal Arts,” what a “liberal education” is, and how this relates to the humanities The structure of classical education, on which the “core curriculum” was historically based, and on which contemporary classical Christian education is based The interesting “border-line” cases of law and psychology How the “arts” and the “sciences” differ (it's not what most people think) Why students should be required to take core courses in the humanities The importance, in all fields, of learning to make good distinctions How to discern whether or not a specific humanities course is worth taking The connections between the humanities and wisdom An argument against the humanities--“They are so “impractical!” The critical distinction between “ends” and “means” in evaluating the value of the humanities The valuable role of the humanities in providing us with “cultural literacy” Why Christians should study non-Christians in literature, philosophy, and the other humanities Other practical benefits of studying the humanities, according to the CEO of a major corporation How to get the most out of your core curriculum courses The role a healthy campus ministry can play in your studies Why you shouldn't just learn about the humanities, but rather learn to engage in the humanities Resources mentioned during our conversation: David Horner, Mind Your Faith: A Student's Guide to Thinking and Living Well Stan Wallace, Have We Lost Our Minds? Dorothy Sayers presented a paper entitled The Lost Tools of Learning at a summer conference at Oxford in 1947. In the paper, she makes a rather astute observation about “end-of-term reports” which should “combine a deep veneration for truth with a tender respect for the feelings of all concerned.” Ms. Sayers' description of comments is profound. The task of writing report card comments seems very burdensome and weighty, but is a task that the teacher should value. Such comments are the last opportunity in the quarter to offer encouragement and advice to students while giving a seal of approval on their progress over the course of the quarter. In light of this advice on writing report card comments, here are the best tips from Matt and Winston on writing report card comments:Deliver compliment sandwiches: Present one piece of encouragement with one meaningful, courteous way the students can (or should) improve for the next quarter. Write comments throughout the quarter: Make a roster at the beginning of the quarter and add to that roster great things students did in class–good comments, meaningful insights, a great diorama here or there–these specific pieces of feedback go a long way in encouraging students. When in doubt, email: If the comment gets too specific, includes too many action items, or seems like it could be misinterpreted, email or call parents and let them know what you're seeing.

Making Education Engaging: A Journey of Discovery Brandon Hendrickson credits Kieran Egan as a significant influence on his educational philosophy. Diagnosed with ADHD, Brandon found traditional schooling uninspiring until he encountered Egan's work, which revolutionized his approach to teaching and learning. Egan's perspective on education, emphasizing the importance of making learning emotionally engaging and relevant, resonated deeply with Brandon. This new outlook led him to prioritize understanding and curiosity over mere academic performance, fostering a love for learning in both himself and his students. Watch the video episode on YouTube. About Brandon Brandon Hendrickson is the founder of Science is WEIRD (https://www.scienceisweird.com/) — a startup that's developing a new approach to science education. At Science is Weird, they're building a progression of courses that rockets kids to a full, up-to-date understanding of science — from the subatomic to the intergalactic. Brandon also writes at The Lost Tools of Learning (https://losttools.substack.com/). Five key takeaways from this conversation: 1. Importance of Making Learning Matter: The most crucial element in education is making subjects matter to students. When a topic resonates emotionally, students are more likely to engage deeply, remember, and understand it. 2. Integration of Stories and Logic in Education: Egan's educational philosophy emphasizes the integration of stories and logic. While traditional education focuses on logic and facts, Egan believes in using stories to make learning engaging and memorable. 3. Holistic and Interconnected Curriculum: Effective education should present subjects as interconnected. Understanding how disciplines like physics, chemistry, and biology relate to each other helps students see the bigger picture and appreciate the complexity of the world. 4. Role of Teachers, School Founders, and Parents: Each stakeholder has a unique role in making education meaningful. Teachers should focus on making lessons emotionally engaging, school founders should design curricula that integrate Egan's principles, and parents should foster an environment that encourages curiosity and love for learning. 5. Potential of Modern Educational Tools: With advancements in technology, such as LLM AIs and online educational resources, there is now a greater opportunity to create the best educational systems ever. These tools can help tailor education to individual needs and make learning more accessible and engaging. Is education something that should be mandatory? This question has sparked debate worldwide. A significant issue arises from the fact that people often don't value what they're forced into. Take, for example, the average high school student who is compelled to attend school. Similarly, many college students eagerly await graduation, with their focus not on learning or the educational process but on the obligation to be there. In contrast, homeschoolers often exhibit a markedly different attitude, approaching education with purpose and intention. This was the central theme of a commencement speech delivered by Mike Winther at a graduation ceremony for homeschoolers. In his address, Mike imparted three pieces of advice that are not only relevant to the graduates but also to a broader audience. His inspiring speech emphasized the importance of avoiding shortcuts, not compromising on values, and never retreating in the face of challenges.   You'll Learn: [01:41] There are no shortcuts. No compromise and no retreat.  [02:03] Homeschooling takes a lot of time and expense. Parents of homeschoolers pay taxes for public education, and they pay for homeschool education. [02:43] There are no shortcuts. If you want the right results, you have to take the long-term course. [03:10] The most dangerous attack is usually the most subtle attack. [04:40] Mike shares the story of Nehemiah and rebuilding the walls while under attack. [06:13] Mike shares reasons why they succeeded in spite of all the many hardships. [08:33] We'll have to make sacrifices to educate our children in a Godly way.  [09:22] There are no compromises. We compromise way more often than we should. [09:44] There should be no compromise when it comes to moral principles. [10:14] The pilgrims founded Harvard University 20 years after they arrived here. The sole purpose was to train pastors and educators to spread the word of God. [10:50] Today, Harvard is a great bastion of atheism and secularism. Why? Because somebody compromised. [13:18] By 1805, Unitarians controlled the governing board of Harvard University. With compromise, the institution was given over to non-Christian theology and thought. [14:36] No retreat. [15:13] Gates are a defensive weapon. [16:57] The ultimate threat to homeschooling is going to come from people who appear to be our friends. The biggest reason to compromise is going to be your friends. [19:14] We need to be discerning and know the truth in everything we do. [20:19] We need to be careful about the approaches we take and not take shortcuts or compromise God's will.    Your Resources: Books to browse Five Principles By Michael Winther Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning

At New Saint Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho, students are equipped with a particular set of intellectual skills that give them a foundation rooted in God’s Word. Making humanistic education democratic and freely available was its downfall, at least in the eyes of Albert Jay Nock, as he discusses in The Theory of Education in the United States. Taking a cue as well from Plato's Republic, Jonathan and Ryan address the apparent tension between the excellence of the tradition and the equalitarian, democratic mores of American life. The Lost Tools of Learning, a 1947 lecture delivered at Oxford by Dorothy Sayers, was largely ignored at the time and in England until decades later in the United States, when it became a foundation text of the Classical Christian Education movement. Despite being the lecture that launched 1,000 classical schools, Dorothy Sayers appears to undermine the classical tradition and repeatedly side with educational progressives. Jonathan and Ryan dig into the lecture, its impact on the CCE movement, and some pedagogical alternatives.Richard M. Last week I was a fortunate enough to interview Dr. Ping, a child of Mao's Cultural Revolution who managed to educate himself (he was always naturally good at math, he explains), and go onto college and graduate school. In 1995, he moved to Indianapolis to work as a senior engineer, and later became a US citizen. In 2011, after retiring from engineering, he became a math teacher, and began to notice similarities in the American Schools to those he experienced during the cultural revolution. Not seeing reform of the existing system as a solution, in 2018 he started a non-profit organization, Poema Institute, to research and promote alternative education models. During this conversation, we talk about what those eery similarities are, why they're harmful to our kids right now, and how dangerous they are for the future of the country, and Western civilization as we know it. More optimistically, we talked about what we can do right now to improve education for our kids, while protecting them from the damage of the Marxist/Maoist ideas dominating K-12 in America right now.Dr. Ping deserves our full attention. Who better to raise the alarm, and help us understand why it's essential to use our freedoms while we can, lest we lost them? I'm grateful he took the time to do this interview, and hope not only to have him back again soon, but to work with him on building alternatives in the near future!Read Dr. Ping's Book, Our Children Are Not Prepared https://www.amazon.com/Our-Children-A... Like a tree, whose roots are firmly planted in the ground and whose branches reach toward the sky above, education at The Heights is at once traditional and forward looking. While drawing liberally from the western canon and “the best that has been thought and said,” to borrow Matthew Arnold's phrase, a Heights education is nevertheless at home in the modern world.  Neither the buried archives of special collections, nor the high-rising offices of enterprising tech start-ups are uncharted waters for Heights alumni.  Because of the double-nature of our approach to education, the question of how The Heights fits into the classical school movement produces an interesting and important conversation. To help us think through the ways in which The Heights is in dialogue with both the classical and contemporary worlds, we welcome Head of Upper School, Michael Moynihan, back to HeightsCast. With over twenty-five years of experience as a teacher, Michael offers us a nuanced discussion of: How a traditional approach to education can embrace the advances of modernity without losing its roots.   The ways in which modernity, properly contextualized, can help correct certain biases latent in classical thought.  The role of professional preparation in a liberal arts education. Whether or not one's work is clearly connected to the classical ideal of contemplation, the goal of education converges in the heart of a man who knows he is a son of God; and who, like the Son of God, sanctifies his ordinary work. Show Highlights  Is the Heights a classical school?  How does the Heights fit into the classical school movement?  The role of professor John Dewey in progressive educational trends.  How Dorothy Sayers' speech on “The Lost Tools of Learning” sparked a revival in traditional education.  Ought from an is? How our anthropology informs our education The baby in the bathwater: some positives of mainstream education today viz. the acquisition of professional skills. How modern thought corrects some shortcomings of the classical tradition. The vision of St. Josemaria and what this means for education at The Heights. Dorothy Sayers? "Grammar" stage? "Logic" stage? "Rhetoric" stage? Where did this stuff come from? How did these ideas enter into CATHOLIC circles? In 1991 (not 1995 as said in the video), Doug Wilson's book "Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning", called for a "return" to the "lost method" of education based on ideas found in a lecture by Dorothy Sayers called "The Lost Tools of Learning". The Protestant movement, which spread among private schools and homeschools, was latched onto by Catholics who began spreading these ideas in Catholic circles. Catholics received all of this with no questions, no requests for historical proof, and ran with it, starting homeschool programs and schools, publishing books and study programs. They did so with no evidence that this was, in fact, true Catholic education and yet promoted it zealously among Catholics as "classical Catholic education"--a claim that is completely false. In this video, Mr. Michael explains this history and calls Catholics to examine these ideas and, after doing so, actually return to true classical Catholic education. +++ For more information about classical Catholic education, and access to over 100 free online courses, visit https://classicalliberalarts.com. +++ Mr. William C. With about 18 years to work with, what do I want my children to learn? The stewardship mandate in Genesis 1 calls us to rule and subdue our domains as well as to be fruitful and multiply. How does this apply to my child's education? If you homeschool, you can tailor your child's education based on an educational method you trust and even choose the subjects you want to emphasize. If you've chosen public or private school, you can still be involved in their learning and supplement it with books, subjects, and experiences that you think will enrich and sharpen their minds. This week, Scott and Karl discuss Dorthy Sayers’ paper, "The Lost Tools of Learning." This groundbreaking work is a great deal important to our mission here at Online Great Books, and for anyone else who wants a redo on their education. What did Sayers notice was lost back in 1947? Why does it matter that we have lost the tools of learning? In this episode, the guys talk about the all-encompassing ideas behind the Trivium, the downfalls of specialization, and the purpose of school. In school, you learn math and biology, but do you learn how to learn? For Sayers, the materials you use in order to teach how to learn doesn’t matter, only the process. “The sole true end of education,” says Sayers, “is to teach men how to learn for themselves; and whatever instruction fails to do this is effort spent in vain.” Tune in to this week’s episode and find out how your schooling may have failed you and how to recover your own tools of learning.

#154 - Searching for the A-ha Moment: Coaching vs Teaching

Matt and Scott discuss the nature of learning and how it applies to effective coaching and teaching. They emphasize that coaches and teachers serve as guides during the process of instruction, in our case, leading the lifter toward the correct movement pattern. However a coach can't actually perform the movement for the lifter, the lifter has to do it herself. Consequently, the actual learning takes place in the lifter's mind; in other words, they discover the correct movement. The coach merely reveals the path.   Coaching and teaching are distinct endeavors, however. As Matt describes, coaching per the Starting Strength model involves getting the lifter to move the way you want them to move, according to a model. The coaching method (also referred to as the teaching method in Starting Strength, although we draw a distinction here) instructs the lifter to perform a movement correctly using a concise, easily digestable series of steps. The coach then reinforces the steps and corrects deviations from the model using cues. The objective in this process is simply to get the lifter to perform the lift correctly and ingrain the correct motor pattern.   Teaching goes a step deeper, however, and involves the acquisition of knowledge about the subject. The rank novice, having just been coached, can now perform the lifts adequately, but has no knowledge about the mechanics of the model and why/how the instruction method works. Scott compares this stage of learning to the trivium a person acquires in early childhood. It's a collection of facts, without any context or deeper understanding of the time period, culture, or import of those facts. The point of trivium is not to learn about the subject of the facts, it's simply to acquire facts, and practice the skill of learning -- "learning how to learn." Dorothy Sayers refers to this stage as the "Poll-Parrot" stage in her essay The Lost Tools of Learning.   The same can be said of the rank novice on the platform. Learning the lifts at this point is an exercise in collecting the motor patterns that make up a lift. Later, after the motor patterns have been absorbed, the real learning begins. The learning now becomes a process of discovery, as the lifters discovers why the motor patterns he has acquired result in a good lift that satisfies the Three Criteria.   Clearly, learning -- not just teaching and coaching -- is an active process, one that can only be done by the lifter himself. Passively receiving instruction does not result in learning. The lifter actually has to search and discover correct movement on his own.   Discounts Save 5% off any order at Dominion Belts with the discount code fahveoff.   Connect With Matt Matt on Instagram Starting Strength Online Coaching — Matt’s website Matt on Facebook Matt on Twitter Connect With Scott Scott on Instagram Silver Strength – Scott’s website Scott on Facebook Scott on Twitter Connect With the Show Barbell Logic on Twitter Barbell Logic on Instagram The Website Barbell Logic on Facebook barbelllogicpodcast@gmail.com

01:08 - Introduction 05:55 - Scripture Narrative (Proverbs 22:6) 09:55 - Free-for-all (Self-driving cars) 21:55 - Main Topic (Classical Education) On episode EIGHTEEN of Let the Bird Fly! we welcome Dr. Jason Merritt to discuss classical education. Dr. Merritt has been a classical educator for over a decade teaching mostly classical Greek, as well as serving as HeadMaster for four years. He currently teaches at Covenant Classical School in Fort Worth, TX. Dr. Merritt has also taught Greek at Texas Christian University, has done translation work in Swahili, Croatian, Japanese, and Haitian Creole, and is the author of Devils and Deviants: Religious Schism in 1 and 2 John. In addition to Dr. Merritt, the guys are joined by two pastors that happened to be on campus for the Return to Wittenberg Conference that was recently held in Milwaukee. Pastor Johann Caauwe currently serves Trinity Lutheran Church in El Paso, TX and Pastor Nathanael Seelow serves Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kearney, NE. Rev. Caauwe homeschools his children and has recently presented on the topic of Classical Education in the early Lutheran church. He has also offered Latin classes to children in El Paso as an extension of his homeschooling efforts. Before arriving at the main topic, however, the guys waste their time (and yours, should you choose to listen) by discussing--in perhaps the most uninformed way possible--the positives and negatives of self-driving cars. The discussion comes to it’s logical (and merciful) conclusion when Oliva questions how confident Wade should be about where he might find himself in the event of a tragic airplane crash. Moving on the main topic, Dr. Merritt offers a glimpse into his personal background as well as a brief description of his book Devils and Deviants: Religious Schism in 1 and 2 John. This leads into our conversation about classical education, where Dr. Merritt walks us through a discussion of how classical education differs from what Peter ham-handedly refers to as “modern” education. While acknowledging that there are many different ways classical education can--and is--understood, Dr. Merritt provides us with a sophisticated articulation of what he believes to be central to classical education in regards to its content, method, and telos (i.e., “end” or “objective”). Leave it to a Greek teacher to use Greek words in his answer, but it turns out to be perhaps the most essential part of Dr. Merritt’s view of the value of a classical education. Forming the student, he believes, NOT to be first and foremost getting them into a good school and getting them a good job, etc., etc. (although it may be a secondary effect). Rather, he believes that putting in front of students those things that participate in truth and goodness and beauty gives educators the opportunity to teach students to love those things that have truth and goodness and beauty. So, if you’re a longtime defender of classical education, or someone who’s never even really heard of it before, we think you’ll enjoy this episode. And if you’d like to contact Dr. Merritt, you can do so through the Covenant Classical School website. More links than you can shake a stick at, so here are the main links discussed in the episode (and even a few that weren’t mentioned): Books and Articles: Jason Merritt, Devils and Deviants: Religious Schism in 1 and 2 John Dorothy Sayers, The Lost Tools of Learning C.S. Lewis, On Reading Old Books This was originally the introduction to a new translation of St. Athanasius' On the Incarnation published mid-20th century, but usually anthologized under this title. Robert Littlejohn and Charles T. Evans, Wisdom and Eloquence Flannery O’Connor,  The Nature and Aim of Fiction, from her book Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose I believe this is the essay that Dr. Merritt references near the end of the episode.
