As Albertans contemplate an October referendum that will see them choose between the province remaining in Canada or starting the process toward a future binding independence vote, the governing United Conservative Party is starting to show signs of internal strain and vulnerability of its leader, Premier Danielle Smith. The political game in Alberta has changed. The debate around the future of the province has ignited emotion on all sides, and has morphed into "primordial politics," a deeply-entrenched, identity-based attachment to your side. This week on West of Centre, host Kathleen Petty is joined by two long-time observers of politics in Alberta, with deep knowledge of how the political landscape has evolved. Anthony Sayers is a political science professor and director of Canadian governance policy in the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy; and David Stewart is a professor emeritus in the University of Calgary's political science department. Both are frequent collaborators who have co-authored a number of papers and academic book chapters, and they have a new book that will be published this summer, The Dawn of Competitive Party Politics in Alberta: An End to Solitude. In this rare conversation, Sayers and Stewart tap into the past, where the governing Progressive Conservatives enjoyed little opposition until the Wild Rose Party came along and posed a credible threat. But the merging of the parties has pushed the UCP further to the right, forcing the party to keep its base motivated and ready to turn out in an election. They say the UCP is a different party from when Jason Kenney was leader, and even more difficult for Smith to manage. Host: Kathleen PettyGuests: Anthony Sayers, David StewartProducer: Diane Yanko
In this episode, Tina sits down with Curtis to dig into what's really behind weight loss resistance after 40. Because for a lot of women, it's not just about calories, macros, or workouts. It's everything happening underneath: chronic stress, inflammation, under-eating, nervous system overload, and a body that's quietly shifting into protection mode in midlife. They also talk about why fat loss can suddenly stall, what most people miss when they try to “push harder,” and how things like detox pathways, recovery, and unresolved stress load all show up in body composition. If you've been doing more and getting less back, this conversation helps connect a lot of those dots. Here's what you'll learn: - The real reason you can't lose weight has nothing to do with your macros or your workouts - Why your body is literally designed to hold onto fat and what has to happen before it will let go - The connection between unresolved trauma and weight loss resistance that Curtis sees in almost every woman who has tried everything - Detox is fat loss: what this actually means and why your ability to detoxify determines whether your body will release fat - Why under-eating is making fat loss harder and the slow strategic way to fix it - What food noise is actually telling you and why a GLP-1 not quieting it down is a very specific clue - The training style most women swear by that Curtis says is creating more inflammation than results - Why your body will never prioritize building muscle when you are under-eating and inflamed - The mitochondrial peptides everyone is using for fat loss that Curtis thinks are being used completely backwards - Why MOTS-c works great for some women and causes serious reactions in others - Two books that have changed more of his clients' biology than any peptide or supplement - Why Curtis uses SLU-PP-332 for the exact opposite reason most people think Subscribe: https://carrotsncake.substack.com Join Fit + Fueled: https://carrots-n-cake.mykajabi.com/fit+fueled Why GLPs Fail Recording: https://carrotsncake.kit.com/fpm Connect with Tina Haupert: https://carrotsncake.com/ Facebook: Carrots 'N' Cake https://www.facebook.com/carrotsncake Instagram: @carrotsncake https://www.instagram.com/carrotsncake YouTube: Tina Haupert https://www.youtube.com/user/carrotsncake About Tina Haupert: Tina Haupert is the owner of Carrots ‘N' Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). I was diagnosed with an extremely severe case of sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a pre-diabetic status. At this time, I was also struggling with substance abuse, which would obviously contribute to my health complications, but most were from birth. My psychological health was greatly impacted by my physiological health, evoking feelings of anger, and negativity which caused me to constantly argue with people around me. Send us Fan MailThis week Heather & Vanessa sit down with Curtis Gillespie Sayers who's a functional medicine practitioner formally trained in functional medicine, with additional training spanning functional nutrition, clinical nutrigenomics, methylation, blood chemistry, biometric coaching, and much more. Curtis's practice is built on one principle: symptoms are signals, not diagnoses, and lasting results come from identifying and addressing what is actually driving them.Curtis specializes in complex and chronic cases: the ones that have gone unresolved through conventional approaches. By integrating advanced testing, genetic analysis, and a deep understanding of how the body's systems interact, he builds precise, individualized protocols to get to the root of what is going on rather than managing surface-level outcomes. In this conversation, Curtis shares his personal journey from severe illness to helping complex chronic cases, emphasizing a whole-person approach that integrates body, mind, and environment. A major focus of our conversation is the difference between peptides and bioregulators, with peptides acting as enhancers that can push the system, while bioregulators work more gently to restore balance at a deeper level. The discussion highlights a key truth: there is no magic fix. Real healing requires addressing foundational habits, supporting the body's natural processes, and avoiding the trap of symptom suppression which can lead to deeper imbalances over time. We also explore the emotional and psychological side of healing, including how fear, over-testing, and hyper-focus on data can actually slow progress. Instead, Curtis encourages a mindset shift of seeing symptoms as signals and “everything as an opportunity” to understand and support the body more effectively. The episode closes with a grounded reminder: healing is nuanced, individualized, and requires guidance, especially when using powerful tools like peptides.Connect with Curtis:Website: lifestylempowerment.ca Insta: funt.med.curtisSupport the showFind Heather:Book with HeatherHeather's Free Product Guide with Discount CodesHeather's Instagram Find Vanessa:Vanessa's Instagram Vanessa's Website Free Product Guide with Discount CodesFree Homeopathy at Home Guide

In this episode, I'm back with Curtis Gillespie Sayers, and we dig into why GLP-1s don't always work the way people hope, especially for women in their late 30s, 40s, and beyond. Curtis shares insights from years of working with clients in functional nutrition and explains how things like metabolic adaptation, hormone shifts, gut issues, chronic stress, and not-so-great nutrition can all get in the way of these medications doing their job. Plus, he offers insights and solutions to help your GLP-1 work better. Here's what you'll learn: - Why GLP-1 medications work for some people and not for others - The surprising reason many people hit a weight loss plateau on GLP-1s - What damaged GLP receptors have to do with stubborn weight loss - Why being in a chronic calorie deficit can actually make fat loss harder - The metabolic cascade that happens when cortisol rises and thyroid function drops - The overlooked role of digestion, stomach acid, and bile when using GLP medications - Why some people experience hair loss, gallbladder issues, or pancreatitis on GLPs - The real reason some people get more food noise and hunger while taking GLPs - Why microdosing GLPs may create better metabolic stability than large weekly doses - The surprising reason losing fat can increase your body's toxic burden - What actually determines whether you can come off a GLP without regaining weight - The peptides Curtis prefers for metabolism support and fat loss (and the popular one he strongly dislikes) - The real story behind “plant peptides,” oral GLP drops, and supplements all over social media Peptide School starts March 26th! https://www.carrotsncake.com/peptideschool Semaglutide: https://elliemd.com/microdose?bp=tinahaupert Tirzepatide: https://elliemd.com/microdose?bp=tinahaupert Retatrutide: https://ignitepeptides.com/product/retatrutide-10mg/ref/tina@carrotsncake.com/ 5 Amino 1MG: https://go.biolongevitylabs.com/SH5p SS-31: https://www.realpeptides.co/products/ss-31-elamipretide/ref/220/ NTFactor: https://rstyle.me/+8Ew__ObarZQHyPfm0EDA4g Connect with Tina Haupert: https://carrotsncake.com/ Facebook: Carrots 'N' Cake https://www.facebook.com/carrotsncake Instagram: @carrotsncake https://www.instagram.com/carrotsncake YouTube: Tina Haupert https://www.youtube.com/user/carrotsncake About Tina Haupert: Tina Haupert is the owner of Carrots ‘N' Cake as well as a Certified Nutrition Coach and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P). A presentation of The PAPER STREET Podcast, 'LATE TO THE PARTY' is a recurring program that brings filmmakers, friends, and entertainment industry pros on to discuss one of their major movie blind spots. The guest chats with hosts Shawn Talley and Cameron Burns before watching the film, then reconvenes with them after having seen it to all share their thoughts on the movie and much more! This go-round, filmmakers and longtime couple Brad McHargue & Becky Sayers were both late to the party on WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, but we're glad they made it! The group dive deep into the endlessly quotable rom-com, talking Nora Ephron's dynamite script, the chemistry of the cast, how well the movie holds up, and of course, about the untimely passing of Rob and Michele Reiner, and the filmmaking legacy left by the former. If you've seen the 1989 film WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, check out this fun conversation. And if you haven't, you're late to the party, but that's okay; we'll still be here when you get to it! Save 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKIPEDIA at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comThis week on the podcast, Mikki speaks to Curtis Gillespie Sayers for a wide-ranging and grounded conversation on chronic illness, mitochondrial health, and what real healing actually requires.Curtis shares his own health journey — from being in and out of hospital from a young age with severe sleep apnoea, cardiometabolic risk, and long-standing physiological stress, to entering the health space through bodybuilding before realising that looking fit and being well are not the same thing.Together, they explore why many people remain stuck despite doing “all the right things,” and how healing often fails not because of a lack of effort, but because the body is still operating in a defensive state. They discuss the physiology that keeps the body stuck in survival rather than being able to heal. They also dive into peptides, what is and isn't appropriate and Curtis' recommendations for out of the box treatments. Curtis Gillespie Sayers is a health practitioner and systems thinker specialising in mitochondrial health, nervous system regulation, and recovery from chronic illness. After spending much of his early life in and out of hospital with significant respiratory and cardiometabolic complications — including severe sleep apnoea, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and pre-diabetic markers — Curtis entered the health space initially through bodybuilding. While improving his physique helped some symptoms, it also revealed a deeper truth: external fitness does not guarantee internal health.Driven by a desire to understand what was happening beneath the surface, Curtis shifted his focus toward the interaction between mitochondria, the nervous system, immune signalling, and environmental inputs such as light, sleep, and stress. His work now centres on helping people who feel “stuck” — those who have tried diets, supplements, and protocols without lasting improvement — by addressing the biological signals that determine whether the body can actually heal.Curtis takes a pragmatic, data-informed approach, viewing tools like nutrition, supplements, and peptide therapy as supportive levers rather than shortcuts, and emphasising the importance of safety, adequacy, and rhythm in long-term recovery.Curtis https://lifestylempowerment.ca/Curtis https://www.instagram.com/funct.med.curtis/ Curranz Supplement: Use code MIKKIPEDIA to get 20% off your first order - go to www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk to order yours Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwilliden
