Process by which an organism grows from a spore or seed

Thursday, 2 October 2025 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. Matthew 13:26 “And when it sprouted, the grass, and it yielded fruit, then it appeared, also, the darnel” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus noted that the field of wheat was invaded by an enemy who went in and sowed darnel among the wheat. With that action accomplished, it next says, “And when it sprouted, the grass, and it yielded fruit.” When the two plants first begin to grow, they are almost indistinguishable. Both look like grass in their early stages. So much is this the case that only the most observant person would be able to tell the difference. But nobody would normally look for such differences, assuming that all of the field was sown with wheat, which is what originally occurred. However, as the two plants continue to grow, noticeable differences begin to occur. The color of the wheat begins to turn the familiar golden brown, and the heads will begin to nod or bow on the stem as they approach harvesting time. The darnel, however, remains greener and continues to stand upright. It is as this maturing time approaches that Jesus says, “then it appeared, also, the darnel.” The evident differences have alerted the farmers that there is a problem. Darnel has been found among the wheat. This is a problem that must be rectified. However, as will be seen, the decision of how to do so must be handled by the owner. Life application: The differences between the wheat and the darnel can teach us things that the people of Israel would already know. They were an agrarian society, and these things would be common knowledge as the people interacted with the farms each year. Wheat is a grain crop. Its seeds are nutritious and are used to make flour for bread, pasta, cakes, pasties (oh! pastries), crackers, etc. The straw also has uses, such as insulation, animal bedding, paper, etc. Further, the wheat byproducts can be used in animal feed. These include the bran and the germ. The whole plant has some uses that are beneficial. There are seven stages of wheat growth – Growth Stage 1: Germination. When the seed absorbs water, growth from the seed's dormant state begins. Growth Stage 2: Leaf Development. The sprout rises and forms. Growth Stage 3: Tillering. The grass forms new stems or shoots from its base, thus increasing the overall density. Growth Stage 4: Stem Elongation. The stems continue upward, preparing for the next stage. Growth Stage 5: Booting. The head, now fully formed, is enclosed within the swollen sheath of the flag leaf. This is just before the head fully comes forth. Growth Stage 6: Inflorescence Emergence, Heading. It is when the visible appearance of the grain, known as the inflorescence, emerges. This is the transition point between the vegetative and reproductive phases. Growth Stage 7: Flowering, Anthesis. The blossoms open and become functional, and the reproductive stage is realized. Darnel grows about the same height and the same speed as wheat, mimicking it until a certain point. The seeds are much lighter than the wheat, and this is why they continue to stand up while the wheat bows. Darnel is poisonous to both humans and livestock. Their side effects are dizziness, nausea, and even death when consumed in high amounts. The roots of the two plants can get intertwined. Because of this, an obvious negative effect of pulling the darnel out is seen. This is why their state must be decided by the owner. As for the end purpose, wheat is harvested, processed, and the grain is stored as a valuable source of food. The darnel, however, is separated from the wheat, heaped up, and burned. Reread the two descriptions (which are not all-inclusive of their traits) and think about how closely each represents what you would expect as you evaluate teachers, preachers, and congregants within the larger church (or within the people of Israel at the time of Jesus). Think about churches with proper doctrine, sound handling of Scripture, and proper growth of the people. Contrast them with other churches you may have attended, or church figures you may have seen on TV, or heard about. Lord God, even the grasses of the fields can teach us lessons about You, Your wisdom, what You cherish among people, and what You find repulsive and offensive. If we just open our eyes and compare the world around us to what You tell us in Your word, we can learn so very much. Help us to do so as we interact with Your word and the world we live in. Amen.

As we step into September, the garden is changing pace – and this week I've been keeping dry in the shed, sowing our seed of the month: watercress, catching rainwater, and tidying up the allotment between showers. Seed of the Month: Watercress Watercress is one of those crops that often gets overlooked, but it's such a rewarding and easy one to grow. I've started mine two ways this week: From seed: Sow into a shallow tray of seed compost or fine multi-purpose compost. The key is to keep it moist at all times – never let it dry out. Simply sprinkle the fine seeds on the surface (don't bury them) and place the tray in a bright spot such as a kitchen windowsill. Germination takes 7–14 days. Once the seedlings appear, thin them to a couple of centimetres apart to allow airflow. From supermarket salad: Buy a bag of watercress, pick out a few stems, and place them in a shallow dish of water (gravel in the bottom helps with stability). Change the water every 2–3 days and soon you'll see new shoots and roots. Once rooted, they can be potted up in compost. Watercress thrives in damp, shady conditions – it doesn't need a pond, though it will happily grow in one! Keep it consistently moist (water-retaining compost in containers works well), and harvest by snipping outer leaves regularly while leaving the centre to keep growing. Avoid cutting more than one-third at a time to prevent stress. In the kitchen, wash well before using. Watercress is brilliant in salads, sandwiches, smoothies, stir-fries, and, of course, soups. It's best just before flowering when the flavour is at its peak. Rain, Water Butts, and Saving Pennies August was unusually dry here in Littlehampton, with just 27 mm of rain – and 26 mm of that came last week! The downpours were a blessing, filling the water butts and saving countless watering trips. I've also been busy installing extra rainwater diverters. A quick tip here: make sure the diverter is fitted level with the water butt inlet. Too high and the butt will overflow; too low and it won't fill properly. Installed correctly, they divert water into the butt until it's full, then allow excess to continue down the drainpipe. It's a simple job but pays off hugely – reducing bills, increasing self-sufficiency, and keeping the veg patch well-watered without relying on the tap. Allotment Update The allotment has benefitted from the rain too. Weeds are much easier to pull in the softened clay soil, and the plants look visibly better for the soak. Harvests are coming thick and fast: tomatoes, peppers, chillies, and aubergines are all doing well. I did notice something interesting – carrot seeds sown in beds rich with organic matter have germinated far better than those in bare clay. Another reminder that compost is king. Adding organic matter improves structure, water retention, and germination, and it's why I'll be digging out and spreading compost across the beds in the coming weeks. Security has also been on my mind. With darker evenings approaching, allotments can sadly be easy targets. I've secured my shed, avoid leaving anything valuable on site, and even set up a wildlife camera to keep watch. If food is taken, I'd happily share with those in need – I just wish people would ask rather than steal. Recipe of the Week: Watercress Soup With Chef Scott stepping back from weekly recipes, I've taken over this week's cook-along. Naturally, it had to be a watercress soup – simple, peppery, and a beautiful shade of green. Listener Projects & Fermented Experiments I was delighted to receive a message from Andy in mid-Wales, who built his own hot bin from recycled polystyrene boards. I love these DIY projects – I've built compost bins and beds from pallets and reclaimed timber myself. Autumn and winter are perfect seasons to plan these projects, as the garden slows down. And thanks to Lynn for sharing her kombucha experiments!

IT'S ALIIIIIVVVEEEEE!!!!! In honor of my parents and halloween being a good time to reconnect with a past life, I'm getting the Terpene Therapy Tomato Tent up and running again! I figure here's a good place to consolidate my lore expansion from this episode, I used to grow "tomatoes" with them at the house I grew up in before my mom's cancer progressed and she required advanced treatment in Texas. The traveling made it to where the grow fell apart; it simply was not a priority and cannabis didn't seem help her particular type of cancer. Certain, rare, types of cancer don't respond well to cannabis treatment. That being said, it's time to get back into it. This week we're germinating the Amnesia Lemon Hashplant from Superfluous Strains out of VA. This strain is the most similar one in my collection to the Amnesia Haze that I used to grow with my parents. The second question is about planting carrots in California's climate. Fred explains that carrots can be grown year-round in milder coastal climates, but in the Central Valley, they have a hard time germinating and growing in hot temperatures. Master Gardener Gail Pothour also shares tips for planting carrot seeds and suggests using radishes as an indicator for carrot germination.Previous episodes, show notes, links, product information, and transcripts at the home site for Garden Basics with Farmer Fred, GardenBasics.net. Cold stratify seeds the right way for faster germination and higher yields. Stop doing it the wrong way.
Some plants have evolved fruits with edible flesh that attract birds. When birds swallow the fruit, they also ingest the seeds. They transport the seeds to new spots for the plants to take root. Birds' digestive systems grind away the hard outer coating of the seed, making it more likely to germinate. Seeds in a bird's droppings are pre-packaged in nutrient-rich fertilizer.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. As we've discussed in other Tech On Demand videos and podcasts, the key to successfully producing high quality crops often starts at the very beginning. How you and your team approach the earliest stages of germination and propagation sets the stage for uniformity down the line. We're pleased to welcome back frequent guest Dr. Will Healy. Will recently retired as Senior Manager of Ball's technical services group but continues to think about ways to share his knowledge and decades of experience working with growers of all shapes and sizes. This time, he's here to focus on seed-raised petunias. FULL VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/ulOD0qDeePs?si=AOe9KD4UCF8VvmQM Will begins by explaining the germination process, defining terms and talking about the importance of melting the coating on pelleted seeds (like petunias). After establishing the importance of proper moisture management melt pellets effectively, he digs deeper into flat filling and seeding best practices including properly centering the seed in each cell and NOT BURYING PETUNIA SEED, which can be more challenging than it sounds. Then the discussion turns to building a strong root system and avoiding “root running” or failure to root. As cotyledons begin to emerge, attention must be paid to the goal of achieving uniform petunia stands and again, it comes back to irrigation to prevent drying. By day 8 in the germination process, your petunias should be off to a strong start, setting the crop up for success. Synchronous germination is the goal—uniform seedlings that germinate within a 48-hour window and grow uniformly throughout production. Dr. Will Healy joins host Bill Calkins for a deep dive into the germination process with a focus on pansy and viola crops. Will begins by explaining why water and oxygen are the most critical elements in pansy germination, as well as the importance of hydration levels from Day 0-4. He then shares ways to reduce the potential of creating a “gel layer” on seeds, instead moving them into the germination stage effectively. Next, Will explains best practices for flat filling with uniform moisture and ways to avoid dry spots and “checkerboarding” in young plant production. Moving down the seeding line, pansies and violas should be top coated with a coarse media but distribution of the media is the key element. At the end of the line should be a water tunnel but, again, there are protocols to follow, and Will explains them all. Lastly, when your plug trays are filled, there's always the discussion of whether bench production or a chamber is optimal. Will explains pros and cons for both.
