Dr. Joe Rigney joins Kira to talk about empathy - what is it, why is it so destructive and how have we misunderstood it both in the church and society in general? Rigney discusses his new book, “The Sin of Empathy,” and why we need to “sober-minded” rather than peddlers of pity. “The main virtue that I commend is sober-mindedness. This is, another biblical term. And if you think about what does the word sober-minded mean, well, normally you think of sober in terms of drunkenness and alcohol, right? If you get drunk on alcohol, you're not sober, and so you need to sober up. The basic biblical claim then is you can be drunk on more than just alcohol.”Rigney is Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrews College. He lives in Moscow, ID with his wife and three sons. It's another day in the Golden Age, and the Democrats' losing streak continues as we witness more insanity from activist judges. Most recently, an Obama-appointed judge ordered planes carrying illegal migrant gang members to turn around midflight, an absurd decision that has led to articles of impeachment being filed. This rogue judge's blatant overreach has sparked outrage, and now Congressman Brandon Gill is pushing back. I'll break down the latest in this battle, from Trump's response to judicial overreach, to how the Republican Congress is backing him up. With the Supreme Court dragging its feet, Trump has a green light to keep pushing back against these ridiculous rulings — and the fight for common sense continues. In the second part of this episode, Randi Weingarten is back on MSNBC, panicking over massive cuts to the Department of Education, where nearly half of its workforce has been removed. These cuts are a direct response to the Department's failure to uphold educational standards, with schools increasingly pushing radical ideologies instead of foundational knowledge. Parents are outraged as their children fall behind in education, while the department's bloated budget continues to fund wasteful spending. The Trump administration is taking action to root out "wokeness" in education. Ben Merkle, president of New Saint Andrews College, joins to discuss the battle against this educational corruption and the importance of returning to a curriculum based on truth, goodness, and beauty. Many Christians today recognize that all is not well. There are problems in our communities, our culture and even our churches. But what can biblical Christians do in the face of these challenges? Douglas Wilson - pastor, theologian, author, serial ministry founder and cultural commentator - joins the Christian Emergency Alliance to answer these questions and more. He shares his thoughts on the most pressing needs for Christians today, and offers sage advice on how to begin thinking holistically. The ability to think in wholes, not parts, is what allows him to often spot trends before others perceive them. He opens up about how you can develop your own capacity for worldview thinking, so you can do the same. What does Pastor Wilson think is on the horizon for Christians? How will this affect the type of pressures or persecutions Christians can anticipate? What traps lie on the path for biblical Christians, and how can we avoid falling into them? Listen in to this episode of the Christian Emergency Podcast to find out. This is Episode 53 of the Consortium Podcast, an academic audio blog of Kepler Education. In this episode, George Harrell discusses our classical inheritance and what it means to receive it. He explains how we have all received an intellectual and cultural inheritance; most of us in North America have received, in large part, a classical Christian inheritance whether we realize it or not. Even when attempting to reject the inheritance, it is confirmation that we have received something to reject. Listen in as George brilliantly unpacks the deeper goodness of inheriting our Western heritage. George is a classical educator and the executive director of the George Buchanan Forum. He grew up in the foothills of northern Idaho, where he immersed himself in the classics, both old and new, as well as the historical worlds that created them. He graduated with an MA in Trinitarian Theology and Letters from New Saint Andrews College in 2013. Since then he has developed and taught online high school courses in the humanities, in addition to writing and publicly lecturing on these topics. This fall, George is teaching American History, Biblical Narrative and Imagery, and Unlocking Middle-earth: How to Read Like Tolkien at Kepler Education.

In recent decades, classical education has experienced significant growth both in the U.S. and globally. This educational approach takes various forms, including traditional five-day programs, hybrid/collaborative models, and homeschooling. Alongside these formats, a flurry of terms like “classical Christian,” “Christian classical,” “classical liberal arts,” and “humanities education” have emerged. Understanding and distinguishing among these options can be complex for schools and parents alike. Today, Dr. Chris Schlect, Director of the Classical and Christian Studies at New Saint Andrews College, joins us to help clarify these terms and explore their significance in shaping the next generation through our homes and schools.
