This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comMalheur means “misfortune”. It comes from French-Canadian trappers who applied the name to the SE Oregon area, when in 1818, a cache of beaver furs was believed to be stolen by local indigenous people. Malheur River, Malheur County and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge all take their names from this origin story.Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a wonder. Its main geologic feature is the basin lake: Malheur Lake. It's similar in one way to The Great Salt Lake, a closed basin lake, but Malheur is technically an intermittent basin lake. In wetter years the water flows outward and onward from the lake. This prevents salts from building up, keeping it a fresh water habitat. For this reason, and because is surrounded by arid lands, it is a migratory bird haven. The refuge was created in 1908, partly in response to the wholesale slaughter of egrets and herons for their plume feathers, which were used as ornamentation on women's hats of the time. Eventually the reserve grew to 293 square miles in size. It's a beautiful, quiet country. Sagebrush uplands surround the lake and riparian habitats. It really is something to realize that when you boil it down, the Euro-American expansion in to western North America was hastened by hat fashion. Before gold, there were beavers, herons and egrets. That's where the easy money was. Showy hats with little practical value. Beaver hides were felted and often dyed black for bowler, fedora and top hats.Today, in wet years, high numbers of nesting colonial birds, including White-faced Ibis can be found here. I associate Florida and the gulf coast with ibises, not Oregon. Observing these birds here feels novel to me. Ibis can be heard in this recording, on the wing, ranging by. There's all kinds of shorebirds too, on the shorelines and mudflats. The melodious Western Meadowlark, welcomes in the day. As for Malheur, it's arguably a word more apropos to the fate of the Native Americans than the trappers and settlers. In the winter of 2016 a different kind of “malheur” played out, but we'll save that for Part 2, next week. The environmental audio was recorded from the sagebrush uplands pointed towards the vast shallow lake wetlands. This soundstage was truly large; on the order of 1000 acres across the auditory horizon. The instrumentation is familiar for a Listening Spot recording. (This is 7th such effort.) String-like sounds with slow attack and decay rise and fall in movements. Among the more novel sounds are undulations; gently percolating guitar voices and fuzzy textures. It gets very quiet and sparse at the 19 minute mark (Track 9) near the end. A Whimbrel can be heard in the distance, while high thin tones punctuate the ambience in a plaintive sort of way. It seems like the quietest moments are usually my favorites. I hope you'll check it out. Thanks for reading and listening. I'm grateful for you. Malheur Suite I is available under the artist name Listening Spot on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) Friday, March 14th.

Giving is supposed to be a source of great joy for God's people. But sometimes, we act like it's just another pain in our wallet.Christians are supposed to be generous, but maybe you're having trouble getting excited about the idea. Today, we'll point you back to the radical joy of godly generosity.Has Your Giving Become Automatic?Let's start with an honest confession—has your Sunday donation become a routine, more about the habit than the heart? Or maybe you've been cutting back on giving due to financial challenges, and guilt is starting to creep in. Perhaps you and your spouse are facing tension over financial decisions, making discussions about giving stressful and uncomfortable. If your generosity feels stale or joyless, it's time to hit reset. A renewed perspective on giving can not only restore your joy but also realign your heart with God's purposes.Christian Generosity Is DifferentUnlike the world's view of generosity, where recognition, self-esteem, or even a building with our name on it might be the end goal, Christian generosity is rooted in serving a different Master. It's not about impressing others; it's about imitating Christ.Ephesians 5:1 reminds us: “…be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”Jesus' love for us led him to give everything on the cross, and we follow his example when we give radically, sacrificially, and joyfully.Sometimes, the action of giving must come before the feeling. Even when joy is absent, continue to give in faith. The joy will come because generosity pleases God, and He is faithful to guide your heart as you seek Him in this area.Cultivating a Biblical Attitude About GivingWhat does biblical giving look like? It's more than just putting money in the offering plate. Scripture teaches that our giving should be secret, open-handed, cheerful, loving, and sacrificial.1. Secret, Not ShowyJesus calls us to give in secret so that the glory goes to God, not ourselves. In Matthew 6, He warns us to “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them…But when you give to the needy, do not let your right hand know what your left is doing.”2. Open-Handed, Not Stingy2 Corinthians 9:6-7 encourages us:“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”What we have isn't ours—it's God's. Knowing that He is our provider allows us to give freely, whether it's our time, talents, or treasure.3. Cheerful, Not ReluctantGod loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). Cheerfulness in giving may not come naturally, but God can transform your heart. Pray for Him to help you find joy in generosity because this is His desire for you.4. From Love, Not ObligationGiving that pleases God flows from love—love for Him and love for others. It's not something we manufacture; it's the Holy Spirit working in us, cultivating a heart of love and compassion.5. Sacrificial, Not ConvenientSacrificial giving stretches us to become more like Christ. 2 Corinthians 8:9 reminds us: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”Giving sacrificially is an act of trust, believing that God will meet our needs while we meet the needs of others.Giving That Glorifies GodTo sum up, giving that honors God will be secret, open-handed, cheerful, loving, and sacrificial. As you embrace these attitudes, you'll find spiritual growth and joy because ultimately, it's all about God receiving the glory. John 3:21 says:“Whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”As followers of Christ, we desire to be more like Him in every way, including how we give. But sometimes, we might find ourselves giving out of guilt, reluctance, or a desire to impress others. If that's where you are today, ask Jesus to transform your heart. Pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance as you practice Christian generosity, knowing that God will not only provide for your needs but also bless others through you.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I have $30,000 I'd like to invest, but I need to figure out where to put it. He is thinking about selling one of the houses. Does the money have to go to the trust, or can he keep it?I'm a retired widow, and when my husband was living, we had just gotten another car. Now that I don't have his income, I am drawing some widow benefits from him. I keep getting mail to refinance at a cheaper rate because I'm trying to build my credit. Are you scratching your head right now? In the previous episode of HER Style Podcast, I challenged you to be bold and gave you 8 ways to make your outfits more creative, and now, I'm telling you to tone it down. So what gives, right?   Well, I've been hearing from a number of listeners lately, including our friend Rachel who submitted today's Q&A Thursday question, that while they love elevated looks and they want to show up looking polished and put together, they have a big fear bubbling up under the surface. They're afraid of being judged for flaunting their taste in fashion and/or making their friends feel less than.   We've entered a new era of casual basics, laid-back looks, and work-from-home wardrobes, and we don't always have a need to dress up like we used to. In a world where so many are showing up with such little effort, do we need to consider whether our closets are legitimately too showy?   It's time to address this elephant and talk about what to do when you're the most style-conscious person in the room.   FREE 5-MIN PERSONAL STYLE QUIZ: https://herstylellc.com/quiz HER STYLE BLOG: https://herstylellc.com/blog HER STYLE ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/heatherriggsstyle/ SUBMIT A QUESTION FOR Q&A THURSDAY: https://herstylellc.com/podcast   Related Episodes: 69 - Why This Working Mom Made Time To Revamp Her Wardrobe (and the Surprising Benefit It Brought To Her Family) with Inês Vaz 51 - Doubting Your Fashion Sense? 5 Tips To Help You Trust Your Own Style Intuition 45 - Growing Your Confidence Is a SELFLESS Choice —Here's Why

South Side Baptist Church Abbeville, South Carolina Pastor Joel Bradberry February 25, 2024 Sunday AM Service Sermon Notes: An outward showy religion without inward transformation blasphemes God's name among unbelievers. 1. It is the inside (heart), not the outside (showy religion), that matters to God. (17-24) And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” [Matthew 12:41-44] 2. Paul uses circumcision as an example of the folly of outward religion without inward transformation. Dr. Olson-Manning is an Assistant Professor at Augustana University, has a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Genetics from Duke University, and leads the Olson-Manning Lab which focuses on understanding how biochemical pathways evolve.Sydney Kreutzmann is a Research Technician in Dr. Olson-Manning's lab, working on a number of research and outreach efforts. In today's episode, we focus on milkweed, and in particular, the Common Milkweed, Asclepias syriaca, of the eastern United States, and the Showy Milkweed, Asclepias speciosa, of the arid west. Dr. Olson-Manning's lab is studying how these two species hybridize in the transition zone in the Great Plains, where humid eastern climates give way to arid western climates. They discuss some of their initial findings, but as is often the case, each discovery opens up many new questions. But to do milkweeds justice, we also get deep into many broader aspects of milkweed, discussing their diversity, speciation, and ranges. No discussion of milkweed is complete without coverage of milkweed toxicity, and the unique animals that rely on it despite this toxicity. And of course, this means some Monarch butterfly talk. But did you know that there are at least 10 other species that rely on milkweed as part of their lifecycle? And one other amazing fact - milkweed produce dopamine. Yes, the same dopamine that you and I rely on. You'll have to listen to hear how it is put to use.Be sure to check out Dr. Olson-Manning's lab, milkweedflower.org for more details on the common and showy milkweed hybridization research, and their instagram. We hear warnings of a shortage of farm vets which is leaving some farmers without cover. The UK is short of vets and the long hours and pressures of the job are putting newcomers off, particularly in large animal work. The Government has added vets to the shortage occupation list, to make it easier for overseas professionals to work in Britain and two new vet schools have also been set up, but in the short term the lack of vets is causing problems. We've been talking about agricultural shows all week. Some are going ahead this summer, but others have been cancelled for a second year in a row. For farmers unable to show their livestock that's disappointing, and can also hit their businesses. And we hear from a woodland crofter in Scotland. This is the third and final discussion of how to recognize a Christian. Arnie and Fred discuss why it is that Christians choose to be so different from others. First of all we note that Christians are not of the world and we discuss what that means even though it is obvious that they are in the world. So, when was it that they were separated from the world? It is said that Christians march to a different drummer. Who is that and what does that mean? Why is it that Christians view hardship, persecution and suffering differently than others do. Finally, we note that Christians are not as common as one might think, but are actually easy to recognize. Take about 30 minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript provided that you can use to help you to follow the conversation.

A specialist in strawberries and gourds, Antoine was a student of Bernard de Jussieu at the Royal Garden in Paris. A plant pioneer, Antoine, recognized that mutation was a natural occurrence and that plants could be altered through mutation at any time. As a young botanist, Antoine began experimenting with strawberries. Ever since the 1300s, wild strawberries had been incorporated into gardens. But on July 6, 1764, Antoine created the modern strawberry - the strawberry we know today. Strawberries are members of the rose family, and they are unique in that their seeds are on the outside of the fruit.  Just how many seeds are on a single strawberry? The average strawberry has around 200 seeds. To get your strawberry plant to produce more fruit, plant in full sun, in well-drained soil, and trim the runners.   February 18, 1902 Today the Showy Lady’s-Slipper became the State Flower of Minnesota. The Lady Slipper orchid was discovered in 1789 by William Aiton. The Lady Slipper’s common name is inspired by the unusual form of the third petal, and it’s what makes the bloom look like a little shoe. During his lifetime, Darwin repeatedly tried to propagate the Lady’s-Slipper Orchid. He never succeeded. The Lady Slipper’s growing conditions are quite particular - which is why they are almost impossible to keep in a traditional garden. It’s also illegal to pick, uproot or unearth the flowers - which was a problem in the 1800s when people collected them almost to extinction. Since 1925, the Lady’s-Slipper has been protected by Minnesota state law. In the wild, Lady’s-Slippers grow in swamps, bogs, and damp woods. They take forever to grow, and they can grow for almost a decade before producing their first flower, which can last for two months in cooler weather. As long-lived plants, Lady’s-Slippers can grow as old as 100 years and grow up to 4 feet tall. To Native Americans, the Lady’s-Slipper was known as the moccasin flower. An old Ojibwe legend told of a plague that had occurred during a harsh winter. Many people died - including the tribal healer. Desperate for help, a young girl was sent to find medicine. But, the snow was deep, and in her haste, she lost her boots and left a trail of bloody footprints in the snow. The legend was that her footprints were marked with the beautiful moccasin flower every spring. One summer, when Henry David Thoreau came upon a red variety of Lady’s-Slipper in the woods, he wrote about it, saying: “Everywhere now in dry pitch pine woods stand the red lady’s slipper over the red pine leaves on the forest floor rejoicing in June. Behold their rich striped red, their drooping sack.”   Unearthed Words I remembered reading that during the great flight year of 1926-27, over 2,300 snowy owls were shot and kept his trophies in the United States alone. One of the greatest difficulties for modern conservationists, I think, is to rightly conceive how much we have lost. We trudge so far today to see so little that the result is often a strangely pathetic elation.  — Robert Finch, Nature writer, Common Ground, Snowy   Grow That Garden Library Ellis Rowan, 1848-1922 by Kate Collins This book came out in 1989, and it’s part of the Australian book series that featured its most outstanding artists. My copy arrived last week, and it features incredible full-page color plates of Australian native flowers, birds, and insects. Born in Melbourne, Ellis married Frederic Rowan in 1873. Ellis discovered painting after her botanist husband, Frederick, encouraged her to develop talent, and it was a passion that she pursued until her death. Ellis’s life was full of adventure. She traveled and painted abroad. Three of her paintings were presented to Queen Victoria. My favorite stories about Ellis concern her wonderful friendship with the botanist and writer Alice Lounsberry, and they created three beautiful books about the flowers of North America. During the First World War, Ellis was living in New Guinea. At one point, she painted 45 of the 62 known species of birds of paradise. As a woman living during the mid-1800s, Ellis followed the dress code of her era. Wherever she went, whether on an expedition or at home, Ellis was always impeccably dressed. Ellis’s daily attire included heavy ankle-length dresses, high collars with full sleeves, crinolines, corsets, whalebone stays, and a hat. Just before Ellis died, the federal parliament in Australia debated whether to buy 1,000 of Ellis' paintings. The Australian artist and novelist Norman Lindsay called Ellis' work vulgar - believing wildflowers were unworthy subjects for art. But ultimately, Ellis' paintings were purchased for $5,000, and they are now a treasured part of Australia's National Library. This book is 52 pages of the beautiful work of Ellis Rowan. You can get a copy of Ellis Rowan, 1848-1922 by Kate Collins and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $9   Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart February 18, 1996 On this day, The Miami Herald shared a story about rebuilding the rare plant house at the Fairchild Botanical Garden. “The born-again rare-plant house at the Fairchild Tropical Garden called Windows on the Tropics has a new roof and new walls - and a whole collection of staghorn ferns mounted like prize stag heads overlooking the inner courtyard.  The new $1 million conservatory at the Fairchild Tropical Garden that is being built on the footprint of the hurricane-demolished rare plant house is nearing its opening day.  It will be the last piece of the Hurricane Andrew puzzle to be put back into place in the garden. More than 2,000 plants will be on display in the conservatory showing about 1,000 species grouped in themes or windows onto the natural tropical world. One window into plant and animal interactions will feature everything from ant plants to carnivorous plants.  Recently a buttonwood tree was bolted to a wall for the display beneath which visitors will walk and come eyeball-to-eyeball with insect-dissolving pitcher plants. The window featuring epiphytic or air plants will open into the old orchid display room [which] will include orchids, bromeliads, and climbing philodendrons. The new conservatory path will lead through the most modern of greenhouse spaces [and will] house Economic plants — those used by man — [like] coffee, pepper, vanilla, and other tropical food and medicine plants. Three new waterfalls are being built in the lower level of the conservatory where ferns, tree ferns, and palms will reside ...and here, the conservatory becomes a sensual experience.  The building is the largest aluminum structure in Florida [that also meets] the 120-mile-an-hour wind code. Soaring 12 feet taller than the old Rare Plant House, the plastic roof has clerestory windows that open for ventilation and come with built-in storm shutters. And, plants no longer will be subjected to chemicals in city water but to rainwater collected in two cisterns that will hold 45,000 gallons.  The conservatory will be opened on March 23rd (1996)… Instead of having a guest speaker, the garden is letting Windows on the Tropics do all the talking, says Barbara Schuler, director of development.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

This episode was filmed kneeling on the wooden floor of his wardrobe, because the apartment echos too much. You can hear the pain in the last 30 seconds of the podcast. Kieran has been blessed enough to have built relationships with the top people in the New Zealand and Australian fitness industries, allowing him to build into the American fitness industry. Living everywhere, he is currently situated in Quebec in Canada, a French speaking state, and he can't even speak French. We talk about the transition of a shy, timid and depressed school kid to an optimistic, strong and self confident coach not afraid to take risks.
