John welcomes back Politico's Jonathan Martin to discuss the Texas Senate race: how scandal-soaked Attorney General Ken Paxton thrashed incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the GOP primary run-off; Democratic nominee James Talarico's “race against time” to define himself before Paxton's effort to cast him as a weak, weird, ultra-woke vegan sinks in with voters; and whether Democrats are once again chasing fool's gold in Texas or the race is a genuine toss-up. JMart also unpacks the latest episode of his “On The Road” YouTube series, featuring Pennsylvania governor and likely 2028 presidential candidate Josh Shapiro.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2026 2:16

Susie hooked on bowling ever since she got her own ball, and now she's watching the HBO docuseries, Born to Bowl. We learn about the recent (accidental) discovery that queen bees can live underwater, and we find out how it's possible. There's a restaurant that's causing a literal stink and getting citations for it, so we debate whether it's racist or fair play. We discuss the French trial Gisele Pelicot's husband, who drugged his wife and let men assault her, and the surprising dynamic between her and her daughter that reveals the complexity of trauma. Plus, we find out why dreaming is a complex bodily function, how it helps your memory, and why lucid dreamers might have an advantage.Join Susie and Sarah for The Brain Candy Podcast's 1000th episode celebration: https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/brain-candy-1000th-episode-event00:00 - Celebrating Episode 999 and Sarah's Equine Path02:13 - Unpacking the Truth About Riding Horses06:02 - From Mules to Animal Sanctuaries and Glue Factories09:33 - Wildgrain Bread, Horse Leasing, and Sarah's Intensity20:38 - Susie's Bowling Obsession and the Joy of Play26:39 - Accidental Discovery: Bees Survive Underwater for a Week34:22 - The Stinky Tofu Debate and the Science of Odor43:19 - Gisele Pelicot Trial: Trauma, Betrayal, and Family Rift49:40 - Why Humans Prefer Animal Mating Calls Over Other Sounds55:21 - How Lucid Dreaming Helps Solve Real-Life Problems 58:02 - Wrapping Up Episode 999 and 1000th Episode PreviewBrain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Head to https://cozyearth.com and use my code BRAINCANDY for an exclusive 20% off.Head to https://www.brodo.com/CANDY for 20% off your first subscription order and use code CANDY for an additional $10 off. Dave cooks a protein-focused dish for a "master of meat": actor, comedian, & host Joel McHale...but Dave doesn't cook red meat like Joel may be used to. After having some of Dave's delicious Wu's Garden-inspired braised tofu, Joel hops (literally) into the kitchen to make a gorgeous Miyazaki A5 wagyu steak. Amongst the cooking, Dave and Joel debate how often you should eat meat, talk about getting older and their health, and reveal why some people call Joel's home "Crazy House" (Hint: Joel likes knives. The show kicks off with classic St. Louis unpredictability—snow one day, 90 degrees the next—while the crew debates survival tactics for Opening Day heat and the emotional rollercoaster of pregnancy cravings (gelato > everything, apparently). From there, things spiral into a surprisingly deep dive into ice cream science, including “sleepy ice cream” designed to knock you out after a late-night binge… because self-control is officially canceled. Then comes one of the most unexpectedly wholesome moments: a pack of kidnapped dogs in China stages a full-on prison break and marches 10 miles home like a furry version of Ocean's Eleven. Yes, there's a corgi leader. Yes, it's incredible. Yes, the show gets weirdly emotional about it.But don't get too comfortable—things pivot fast into relationship psychology, including a real-life case of extreme jealousy (hello, lie detector tests at the front door) and a brutally honest breakdown of how far people will go for love… or at least the possibility of it. It's equal parts hilarious and “wow, we should all maybe go to therapy.”The voice of the St Louis Blues, Chris Kerber called in to discuss the chaos with “March Movie Mayhem,” where the crew debates iconic 90s movies like Fight Club, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, and The Matrix. Expect passionate arguments, questionable logic, and at least one story about strangers starting an actual fight after watching Fight Club (because of course that happened). And just when you think it can't get more chaotic, Rafe shares a behind-the-scenes story of dealing with a real-life “Karen” during a video shoot in St. Charles—complete with legal misunderstandings, delayed comebacks, and the unexpected hero we didn't know we needed: “Sugar Granny.”Of course, it wouldn't be The Rizzuto Show without games, giveaways, and listeners absolutely gaming the system during “3 and 5,” proving once again that the audience is just as unhinged as the hosts. It's a full episode of comedy, chaos, and just enough real-life truth to make you question everything—exactly what you'd expect from your favorite morning show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.This ice cream brand makes me want to drift off to sleep (in a good way)Corgi leads band of stolen dogs on 10-mile journey back homeOthello syndrome unveiled: when jealousy turns into a psychological plot twistBarbie dolls found with fentanyl in packaging sold at discount store40,000-lbs of tofu crashes off I-44; Removed 3 weeks laterFormer pediatrician gets 20 years for trading prescriptions for sex, cashAltoona man accused of setting fire while singing ‘Burning Down the House'OnlyFans owner Leonid Radvinsky dies at 43 following secret cancer battleDoctors are prescribing green space. In this episode of Food Junkies, Dr. Vera Tarman is joined by Adina Mullen, plant-based chef, author of Vegan Flavors of the World, and founder of Adina's Delicacies, to explore whether vegetarian or vegan eating can truly support food addiction recovery, low-sugar living, and even plant-based keto—without deprivation or rebound eating. Adina brings a deeply grounded, real-world approach to plant-based cooking rooted in whole foods, cultural traditions, flavor, and satisfaction. This conversation goes beyond diet rules to focus on nourishment, satiety, and sustainability, especially for people healing their relationship with food.

It's been way too long since Jackie Akerberg (@jackfruitfulkitchen) was on the podcast, and this episode is a true catch-up in every sense of the word. Jackie is a plant-based cook, creator, and community builder who brings joy, honesty, and seriously good food into everything she does.In this conversation, we talk about how Jackie went plant-based and never looked back, how her health completely transformed, and how she's grown an incredibly engaged online community by keeping things real—both in the kitchen and in life. We also get into big life changes, moving across the country, navigating relationships with people who don't eat the same way you do, and why perfection is overrated when it comes to healthy livingAnd of course, we talk food. Squash season. Tofu done right. Tempeh that actually tastes amazing. Smart kitchen shortcuts (yes, including the microwave).
