After weeks of delays, scheduling conflicts, and technical difficulties, the Minyan proudly presents its first truly long-form episode. Join Yaakov, Talia & special comrade guests Ari, Eli, Greer, & Zach as they dive into the bewildering world of Tanakh source criticism, ancient Egyptian literary analysis, & Ancient Near East archaeology, sifting through the layers of propaganda & mythmaking in the traditional Exodus narrative in an attempt to work out what, if any, historicity underlies these stories, how their development reflects the national-mythology of the societies that produced them, and what that means for our understanding of Jewish history. ----------- Intro Music: "Nitsokhn Lid" by Yiddish Glory, remixed by Eli Bertrum. Outro Music: "When You Believe" by Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey / "Miriam's Song" by Debbie Friedman / "Creeping Death" by Metallica. Suggested Reading: "Exodus" & "Who Wrote The Bible?" by Richard Elliott Friedman. "Israel's Exodus in Transdisciplinary Perspective" edited by Thomas E. Levy, Thomas Schneider & William H.C. Propp (in particular the articles therein by Jan Assman; Manfred Bietak; Israel Finkelstein; Ronald Hendel; Stephen O. Moshier & James K. Hoffmeier; Bernard F. Batto; Scott Noegel; Brad C. Sparks; Baruch Halpern; Thomas Romer; Stephen C. Russell; Donald B. Redford; Emmanuel Annati; Brendon C. Benz; Avraham Faust; Daniel E. Fleming; & Thomas Schneider). "To Your Tents O Israel: The Terminology, Function, Form, and Symbolism of Tents in the Hebrew Bible & the Ancient Near East" by Michael Homan.
A lecture in which I present the thesis of Richard Elliott Friedman's book on Exodus, which focuses on the two most ancient parts of the Torah (the Song of the Sea and the Song of Deborah), the historical trends in Biblical archaeology and criticism, and why the Torah could well be a story of two long lost parts of the Hebrew family tree coming together in Israel, possibly under a female leader. The theme reflects the issues of our time: overcoming tribalism to have a national vision based on values, and (surprisingly?) those values/Torah coming from those refugee cousins newly in the Land. I've made an optional source-sheet of Biblical texts to go with this lecture. See: https://www.sefaria.org/sheets/178990?lang=bi

Richard Elliott Friedman, scholar of the Hebrew Bible and author of the best-selling work Who Wrote the Bible?, joins Dan and Lex to discuss his newest book, The Exodus. He argues that the story of the Exodus outlined in the Torah represents a real historical event, experienced not by the whole Israelite nation writ large, but by a particular segment of it -- the Levites. Dan and Ruth speak with scholars Steven Weitzman of the University of Pennsylvania and Richard Elliott Friedman of the University of Georgia (author of Who Wrote the Bible?) to explore the critical question—or is it?—of whether or not the Exodus was a historical event. Professors Weitzman and Friedman walk us through the elements of the story that seem to reflect true historical memories and the elements that are likely embellishments, and both reflect on the power of the story regardless of its historicity. Professor Richard Elliott Friedman joins Dan and Lex for a conversation about modern Biblical scholarship, which his book Who Wrote the Bible? brought to lay audiences in an accessible way nearly thirty years ago (and which had a major influence on Dan and Lex). Among the most influential books on Biblical literature of the 20th Century, Who Wrote the Bible? provides a scholarly overview of the authorship of the Torah through a lens known as the "Documentary Hypothesis." Subsequently, Professor Friedman wrote additional books making these ideas available to non-experts. Along with co-hosts Dan and Lex, Professor Friedman dives deeply into his ideas and scholarship, their impact on the world, and more! Join Carlos as he explores who wrote the Bible with Dr. Friedman. Who are the J,P, E, D scholars? Were there more than one authors who wrote Genesis?Richard Elliott Friedman is professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature and holds the Katzin Chair at the University of California, San Diego. One of the premier biblical scholars in the country, he received his doctorate at Harvard and was a visiting fellow at Oxford and Cambridge. Author of The Hidden Face of God, The Hidden Book in the Bible, Commentary on the Torah, The Exile and Biblical Narrative, and the bestselling Who Wrote the Bible?, Friedman is also the president of the Biblical Colloquium West. A consultant to universities, journals, encyclopedias, and publishers, he is also the editor of four books on biblical studies and has authored over fifty articles, reviews, and notes in scholarly and popular publications.
In this review, Fr. Gabriel continues with further consideration of resources for Old Testament study. In an attempt to assist people to understand contemporary research and interpretation of Old Testament texts, this week he looks at two books by Richard Elliott Friedman, Who Wrote the Bible? and The Bible with Sources Revealed. The latter book may well be considered Friedman's masterpiece. Friedman's work is highly respected among Biblical scholars, and he has paid particular attention for years to the contemporary use of the documentary hypothesis, which relates to the compilation of particularly the first five books of the Old Testament. He teaches at UC-San Diego.
While there remains public debate about teaching the biblical creation story in schools alongside scientific findings about evolution, the irony is that archaeologists and biblical scholars have unearthed and studied artifacts and scriptural fragments that tell us the Bible itself is a product of evolving points of view, fueled by political influences and cultural values, written by multiple anonymous writers, over hundreds of years of changes, additions, and redactions. If only we had those stone tablets written with the finger of God! Join E.J. and Karen as they explore Richard Elliott Friedman's book Who Wrote The Bible? in this broad introduction of how the text was written.
