I wanted to expand on the items that Adult leaders shouldn't bring to Philmont.  So, on this edition we'll talk about bringing a separate tent for the adults.  On the Philmont Trek Talk Facebook group, this topic creates a lot of discussion on both sides.  Philmont Tent - Philmont will provide 2 person tents as a part of the fees paid.  These tents are well used but in great condition.  If you have any issues on the trail with a pole, rain fly, tent, you can easily get some kind of replacement.  With your own tent, you might not be as lucky.  Footprint in Campsites – Some campsites have ample camping areas, some don't.  I've been at several campsites that had limited flat camping spots.  Reduce your footprint and take less gear. Set the Example – Philmont is set up to work in buddies for meals and tents.  We had a leader one year that was a big guy, and he tented with our Scoutmaster without a problem.  You will have plenty of room to sleep.  We expect the Scouts to buddy up, as leaders we should lead by example. I've been backpacking a ton with Scouts, and I will share a tent with another adult.  Frankly, I never spend much time in my tent as I'm enjoying the trip and the awesome surroundings.  So, what did I leave out?  Feel free to disagree with my list and add your own in the comments below and make sure to subscribe on all the socials. 

 WORT 89.9FM Madison · Voices from the Corey Ruiz Memorial On July 22, 2026, a yet-to-be-identified Madison police officer shot 38-year old Corey Ruiz three times in the head, killing Ruiz on the spot.  Bystander video appears to show that Ruiz had already been subdued by three other officers when one officer fired his gun.  The incident occurred at the intersection of Madison's Williamson and Baldwin Streets, in the Williamson-Marquette neighborhood.  That neighborhood has seen more than its share of police violence, with Madison Police officer Stephen Heimsness shooting Paulie Heenan dead in 2012, officer Matt Kenny shooting Tony Robinson dead in 2015 and officer Hector Rivera shooting Michael Schumacher dead in 2016.  In the aftermath of the Ruiz shooting, friends, neighbors and activists have erected a Corey Ruiz memorial at the intersection where Ruiz died.  Williamson and Baldwin Streets remain barricaded, and an ad hoc village has sprung up at the site.  Tents provide food, shelter, mental health services, clothing swaps – even a beautician for neighborhood residents, many of whom are homeless.  When Monday Buzz host Brian Standing visited the Memorial on Sunday, August 2nd, many people were reluctant to speak to the media, citing poor experiences with coverage in the past.  Here's a sample of some of the folks who were willing to talk about their experience. The pace of AI development is nuts Something caught my eye this week that shows just how furious the AI race is becoming: Meta is so desperate for more data centres that it's constructing tents while the proper data centres are built. There are now five 12,000 square meter tents erected at a site in Ohio. They build these “rapid development structures” to house likely billions of dollars' worth of chips. A proper data centre can take years to build – they get these live in three months. They build ‘off the grid' gas-turbine power stations beside them too. Meta's next product: an AI pendant According to reports, it's planning to start testing the device early next year. There have been AI pendants hit the market that haven't taken off. Unsure if it's because they're not actually useful, or because people have privacy concerns about a device listening to everything you say. OpenAI is also working on a device with Apple's former designer Jony Ive. Google and the FBI are warning of something that sounds like it's straight from a movie US law enforcement is warning about ransomware gangs sending fake IT workers to offices to try and steal data. The group has been targeting law firms – turning up and social engineering their way to the laptops of victims and then connecting USB drives or using remote access tools to save data. The USDA just opened the Local Agricultural Market Program (LAMP) request for proposals and Farmers Market Promotion Program applications are due on June 5th. This funding has been a moving target the last couple of years, with tight deadlines,  slow responses and sometimes sudden terminations to confirmed contracts. Still, the grant amounts are some of the largest available to farmers markets seeking to accomplish big, multi-year projects.    This week we're talking to Reza Djalal of the Adams County Farmers Market.
