We begin our exploration into the next Bible book written by Paul after the time covered by the book of Acts. It's 1 Timothy. It's a personal letter, forever filed under the heading Pastoral Epistle because it is a personal letter from an apostle to a local church pastor. This will be a big change in style as we switch from on genre to the other.1 - Where Was Paul, After Acts?2 - Who Is Timothy?3 - Why Letters To Timothy?4 - Who Wrote 1 Timothy? (1-2)

Teacher: David Leventhal. Welcome, we're so glad you're here! This Sunday kicks off our new series where we'll be diving into the book of 1 Peter for the next eight weeks. In today's message, David Leventhal provides a big-picture overview of 1 Peter, focusing on the context that helps us fully grasp the letter. He challenges the church with the central idea of 1 Peter: as God's chosen people, believers are called to endure suffering with hope, following in the footsteps of Christ. Our trials are not in vain—they serve to sanctify us and prepare us for the glory that is to come.      Enjoyed the message? Rate us ⭐⭐⭐⭐️⭐ and leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Welcome to Day 2471 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Who Wrote the Book of Proverbs – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible. Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2471 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2471 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the twenty-fourth lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today, our lesson is: Who Wrote the Book of Proverbs? Who Wrote the Book of Proverbs? The first book of Proverbs announces, “These are the proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel” (compare Prov 10:1; 25:1). By its own testimony, though, the book of Proverbs had many authors: “These are the sayings of the wise [literally, wise ones]” (Prov 24:23). This same idea—that the proverbs in the book were written by several sages—is reiterated in Proverbs 1:6 and 22:17. But old traditions die hard, and the authorship of these proverbs is still debated. What role did Solomon actually play in writing this Wisdom literature? Solomon Had a Pen Name? In some passages of Proverbs, the sages who wrote the book are named. Proverbs 30 was written by Agur, son of Jakeh (30:1), but we know nothing else about him. Some believe Agur is a pen name for Solomon. However, there is little evidence to support this. The name may also be translated more commonly as “the assembler,” which may point to an anonymous collector of proverbs who also wrote chapter 30. Proverbs 31:1 informs us that King Lemuel wrote the famous chapter about the virtuous woman. In this verse, we learn that Lemuel was taught proverbs by his mother. There is little else known about this elusive king. Jewish tradition views the writer as yet another pen name of Solomon, but there is no reliable proof for this connection. In the Tradition of Solomon Proverbs 25:1 provides another insight into authorship: “These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied.” The word translated “copied” can also mean “transcribed.” This suggests that some of the proverbs (perhaps chapters 25-29) were produced by scribes living in the days of Hezekiah (ca. 715-687 bc), after the lifetime of Solomon. At least one anonymous sage did contribute to Proverbs. Portions of Proverbs 22-23 come from an Egyptian wisdom text composed before Solomon's lifetime, The Instruction of Amenemope.- In addition,...

Rick Welch spoke at Berean Bible Church on Palm Sunday and shared his message entitled, "The Family Whom Jesus Loved". After his deep dive study into Who Wrote the Gospel of John, he continued to do research surrounding the special family in Bethany. Mary, Martha and Lazarus all were loved uniquely by Jesus and after discovering information found within the Dead Sea Scrolls, Rick came to the conclusion that they were a part of a non-marrying group that housed the sick, poor and leprous. Then Rick attempts to link Lazarus of Bethany to the same man named in Luke 16 by showing who Theophilus really was. It's a fascinating deep dive into Israel's history and an interesting point of view on one of the most important families in Jesus' ministry. This week, the Ladies are reviving an old segment from the early days of the show: “How to Lutheran,” an exploration of distinctive aspects of Lutheran life that are so familiar as to be almost unnoticed. This week, Rachel's looking at table prayers: Why do we say them? Which ones do we pray? What's so distinctively Lutheran about the way Lutherans say grace? And what's so “common” about the so-called “Common Table Prayer.”  “It is, then, a good and worthy practice to pray before and after meals,” says Rachel. “All our ‘daily bread' ultimately comes from God, and it's appropriate to acknowledge this reality out loud and thank Him for His gifts."  Resources referenced in this episode include:   Who Wrote the Common Table Prayer? – The Lutheran Witness (lcms.org)  Come, Lord Jesus – The Lutheran Witness (lcms.org) (Gene Veith, 2021)  Come, Lord Jesus – The Lutheran Witness (lcms.org) (David Loy, 2011)  Letting these gifts be blessed – The Lutheran Witness (lcms.org) (Emily Olson, 2018)  Praying Before A Meal: Does The Bible Say We Have To? - Pray With Confidence  Pre-meal Prayer: John Crist's Official Rules (youtube.com)  Luther's Small Catechism by Dr. Martin Luther (cph.org)    Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest (Sung to Tallis' Canon) - A Common Table Prayer (youtube.com)  Connect with the Lutheran Ladies on social media in The Lutheran Ladies' Lounge Facebook discussion group (facebook.com/groups/LutheranLadiesLounge) and on Instagram @lutheranladieslounge. When Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that all men were endowed with the rights of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” he did not have in mind the rights of the hundreds of human beings he enslaved. But the enslaved population of the United States, and the abolitionists who supported them, like Frederick Douglass and John Brown, adopted the American symbols of revolution and freedom in their own fight for liberty.   Joining me on this episode to discuss the power of symbols like the flag and Independence Day is historian Dr. Matthew Clavin, Professor of History at the University of Houston and author of Symbols of Freedom: Slavery and Resistance Before the Civil War. In his new book, theologian Matthew Thomas takes on the big question of what the Apostle Paul means when he talks about "Works of the Law" -- as opposed to Grace -- in terms of Justification, addressing a long-standing debate between biblical scholars and using second-century sources to adjudicate the question. The stakes of the faithful, and what it means to be a Christian for the first-century Jews who founded the religion, could not be higher, especially when St. Peter slid back into the observation of Mosaic custom. This is Matthew Thomas's third appearance on AGC: you can also hear him in episodes 02 and 03. The episode that we refer to with Fr. Greg Boyle is episode 17. Re: the Bible’s stance on alcohol, what about Jesus' own drinking as in Matt. 11:18-19? Are you familiar with Norman Golb and his book, Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls, and if so, what do you think? Does Mark’s negative depiction of Jesus’ disciples and relatives reflect enmity between Jewish and Gentile/Pauline factions? Why does the author of “The Second Treatise of the Great Seth” speak so mockingly of the heroes of the OT? .  Brandon suggests we need not worry that passages or whole epistles by Paul were censored since some pretty disturbing material still appears in the Pauline Corpus. Think so?  If I understand you correctly, we agree that Simon Magus is at the root of this belief system advanced by the “works of Paul” (stuff about the law and a judging, punishing God are out).  So Simon’s philosophy and writings would be considered source material.  Is there any uncontaminated remnant of this belief system?               What do you think of the idea that there was no historical "Nazareth" until someone pointed at a place and told the patron saint of credulity, the Empress Helena (Mother of Constantine), "Yeah, this is Nazareth."? You once said you rejected the notion in Atwill’s Caesar’s Messiah that the Romans had a part in creating the gospels and that they were engaged in a sort of esoteric satire which resulted in Christians unwittingly worshiping Titus instead of Jesus. I was wondering why you think this is such an incredible theory, isn't this precisely what happened in your case? Sure sounds like the jokes on you!

Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 931 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. I am Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Who Wrote the Book of Proverbs? – Wisdom Wednesday Thank you for joining us for our five days per week wisdom and legacy building podcast. We are broadcasting from our studio at The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. Today is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-931/ (Day 931) of our trek, and it is Wisdom Wednesday. Creating a Biblical worldview is important to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical worldview, it is required that you also have a proper understanding of God's word. Especially in our western cultures, we do not fully understand the Scriptures from the mindset and culture of the authors. In order to help us all have a better understanding of some of the more obscure passages in God's word, we are investing Wisdom Wednesday reviewing a series of essays from one of today's most prominent Hebrew Scholars Dr. Micheal S. Heiser. He has compiled these essays into a book titled I Dare You Not to Bore Me with the Bible. If asked who wrote the Book of Proverbs, most people who know anything about the Bible would probably say Solomon. It is my favorite book of the Bible, and that is the name that comes to my mind. Today's essay explores… Who Wrote the Book of Proverbs? The first chapter and verse of Proverbs announce: “These are the proverbs of Solomon, David's son, king of Israel.” This is reiterated in Proverbs 10:1 and Proverbs 25:1. By its own testimony, though, the book of Proverbs had many authors. Proverbs 24:23 tell us, “Here are some further sayings of the wise,” which literally means, wise ones. This same idea that the proverbs in the book were written by a number of sages is reiterated in Proverbs 1:6 and [22:17]. We find that old traditions die hard, and the authorship of these proverbs is still debated. What role did Solomon actually play in writing this Wisdom literature? · Solomon Had a Pen Name In some passages of Proverbs, the sages who wrote the book are named. Proverbs 30 was written by Agur, son of Jakeh as is noted in Proverbs 30:1.  An interesting fact is that we know nothing else about him. · In the Tradition of Solomon Proverbs 25:1 provides another insight into authorship, “These are more proverbs of Solomon, collected by the advisers of King Hezekiah of Judah.”  The word translated “copied” can also mean “transcribed.” This suggests that some of the proverbs, perhaps chapters 25-29, were produced by scribes living in the days of Hezekiah which was 715-687 BC, well after the lifetime of Solomon. At least one anonymous sage did contribute to Proverbs. Portions of Proverbs 22-23 come from an Egyptian wisdom text composed before Solomon's lifetime The Instruction of Amenemope. In addition, Proverbs [1:25] appears to be quoting Jeremiah 20:7 and certain portions of Zechariah 7. However, just because there may have been later additions to the book of Proverbs doesn't mean the entire book is dated later than Solomon. There is also the possibility that Jeremiah and Zechariah were drawing on Proverbs. · In the Tradition of Egypt Because Proverbs 22-23 draws on an ancient Egyptian wisdom text that pre-dates Solomon, it seems likely that Solomon may be one of the authors. In addition, the literary patterning in large...

Richard Elliott Friedman, scholar of the Hebrew Bible and author of the best-selling work Who Wrote the Bible?, joins Dan and Lex to discuss his newest book, The Exodus. He argues that the story of the Exodus outlined in the Torah represents a real historical event, experienced not by the whole Israelite nation writ large, but by a particular segment of it -- the Levites. Dan and Ruth speak with scholars Steven Weitzman of the University of Pennsylvania and Richard Elliott Friedman of the University of Georgia (author of Who Wrote the Bible?) to explore the critical question—or is it?—of whether or not the Exodus was a historical event. Professors Weitzman and Friedman walk us through the elements of the story that seem to reflect true historical memories and the elements that are likely embellishments, and both reflect on the power of the story regardless of its historicity. Papias, for example, writes:3 And the elder said this: “Mark became an interpreter of Peter; as many things as he remembered he wrote down accurately (though certainly not in order4) the things said or done by the Lord. For he neither heard the Lord nor followed him, but he came later—as he said with reference to Peter who taught whenever the need arose,5 but he did not [teach] according to the arrangement of the oracles of the Lord,6 with the result that Mark did not err7 when he thus wrote certain things as he recalled them. For he planned out one goal ahead of time,8 namely, to leave out nothing which he heard and not to falsify any [of the words of Peter].”9 When & Where The earliest gospel with an authorship of between A.D. 55 to A.D. 70. Professor Richard Elliott Friedman joins Dan and Lex for a conversation about modern Biblical scholarship, which his book Who Wrote the Bible? brought to lay audiences in an accessible way nearly thirty years ago (and which had a major influence on Dan and Lex). Among the most influential books on Biblical literature of the 20th Century, Who Wrote the Bible? provides a scholarly overview of the authorship of the Torah through a lens known as the "Documentary Hypothesis." Subsequently, Professor Friedman wrote additional books making these ideas available to non-experts. Along with co-hosts Dan and Lex, Professor Friedman dives deeply into his ideas and scholarship, their impact on the world, and more! While there remains public debate about teaching the biblical Creation story in schools alongside scientific findings about evolution, the irony is that archaeologists and biblical scholars have unearthed and studied artifacts and scriptural fragments that tell us the Bible itself is a product of evolving points of view, fueled by political influences and cultural values, written by multiple anonymous writers, throughout hundreds of years of changes, additions, and redactions. During his recent visit to Israel, President Barack Obama began his itinerary with a viewing of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Officials took this occasion to underscore the continuity from biblical times to the present exemplified by these most ancient of biblical scrolls. Of course, examination of the Dead Sea Scrolls and of the ways they have been understood in ancient and in modern times afford evidence not only of continuity but also of dispute and disagreement. In her Israel Studies Lecture, “Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls and Why Were They Forgotten,” Rachel Elior offers an overview of the provenance of the scrolls and her assessment of their significance in both ancient Judaism and modern scholarship. Rachel Elior is John and Golda Cohen Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Jewish Mystical Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Israel Studies Professor for Spring Quarter 2013 at the University of Chicago Divinity School.
