The letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3 are possibly some of the best known parts of the apocalypic book, mainly due to their accessibility compared to the rest of it. But how should we read these seven letters? Are they examples of the history or eras of the church? Are they addressed to different types of church today? Are they symbolic? And why all the Old Testament references?Join Alex, Chris & Jo as they discuss these significant chapters, give some good background information that help make sense of what John is writing, and then talk aboput how we might be able to bring some meaning to us today. We're back for Season 9 of The Bible for Normal People and we're still asking ourselves, “What is the Bible, and what do we do with it?” In this episode of The Bible for Normal People, Pete Enns and Jared Byas examine how biblical criticism raises questions about traditional understandings of Scripture. They explore the historical evolution of biblical interpretation, from the medieval period to the Enlightenment and then modernism, highlighting the influence of major intellectual and religious movements on the practice of Christianity as we recognize (or don't recognize) it today. The Summer Camp series on Hermeneutics is back with episode four of five with an introductory look at Biclical Criticism. In this episode, I discuss briefly what Literary Criticism and Historical Criticism is, how they can positively play a role in our Hermeneutical process, and some of the paths that people take to arrive at conclusions that I myself may not agree with. I also breakdown the long-standing, unhealthy mentality that some Christians have of "it's not from my group therefore it is wrong." “Latter-day Saints believe in the pursuit of truth through ‘study and faith' and are thus not opposed to intellectual examination of scripture” (Dr. David R. Seely). One way we might examine the scriptures is through the use of biblical criticism, or historical criticism, an approach regularly used by biblical scholars to assess the meaning of a text—it's original context, audience, and authorship. In this episode Dr. Jason Combs, associate professor of ancient scripture, discussed his chapter “Historical Criticism of the Bible among the Latter-day Saints.” He outlines the history of biblical criticism and explains how it may serve as a tool to aid our scripture study. Further, Dr. Combs details how such approaches may provide a more well-rounded vision of the scriptures, especially in studying the Old and New Testaments and comparing multiple accounts of the same events. In doing so we should balance biblical criticism with the application of scriptures and the gospel to our daily lives. Should I Study Biblical Criticism? In this episode, we provide a glimpse into the complex and often contentious world of Biblical criticism, exploring how two prominent theological schools of thought - Conservative and Orthodox - approach the study of our holy Torah. While both sides affirm the general authority of the Bible, they diverge sharply on the role of historical and cultural context, the relationship between human and Divine authorship, and the implications of scholarly inquiry for faith and practice. To illustrate this, our guest, Rabbi Steven Gotlib, presents a responsum from Conservative scholar R. Prof. David Golinkin and contrasts it with Rabbi Jonathan Sack's letter to Rabbi Louis Jacobs (author of Theology in the Responsa). Let us know if you liked our exploration of this unique teshuva topic in the comments. Enjoy!

TRANSLATING AND REVISING SCRIPTURE, Chapter 3 of As It Is Translated Correctly Read full chapter here: https://www.blogtalkradio.com/fundamentallymormon/2023/12/31/translating-and-revising-scripture-chapter-3-of-as-it-is-translated-correctly Pages 20 to 41 Too often over-zealous and misinformed preachers of today profess to have a Bible without error. However, any honest Christian scholar will admit mistakes and inaccuracies in all Bible translations. Perhaps the erudite scholars of Bible history said it best when they declared: The need for NT textual criticism results from a combination of three factors: (1) The originals, probably written on papyrus scrolls, have all perished. (2) For over 1,400 years the NT was copied by hand, and the copyists (scribes) made every conceivable error, as well as at time intentionally altering (probably with the idea of “correcting”) the text. Such errors and alterations survived in various ways, with a basic tendency to accumulate (scribes seldom left anything out, lest they omit something inspired). (3) There are now extant, in whole or in part, 5,338 Greek MSS, as well as hundreds of copies of ancient translations (not counting over 8,000 copies of the Latin Vulgate), plus the evidence from the citations of the NT in the writings of the early church fathers. Moreover, no two MSS anywhere in existence are exactly alike. (Biblical Criticism, Harrison, Waltke, Guthrie and Fee, p. 128)

THE CONCLUSION OF OUR SERIES AT LAST. We apologize for the length, but we didn't want to divide this concluding episode in two. Satell, Greg. “Why the Experts Always Seem to Get it Wrong,” Forbes, 2014. Retrieved from https://www.forbes.com/sites/gregsatell/2014/02/19/why-experts-always-seem-to-get-it-wrong/?sh=163664d73a36 On March 24th, 2022, the Associates for Biblical Research announced the discovery of an ancient curse tablet (defixio) on Mount Ebal at the site of "Joshua's altar." In this series, as we promised in episode #52, we revisit this discovery following the publication of the scholarly paper on May 12th of this year. We hope to lay out the context and reasons this discovery and its controversial interpretation is so important. To do so, we must become acquainted with modern theology and biblical criticism as practiced in the contemporary West, the ongoing scholarly debate over the defixio, and finally to discuss C. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." This talk will be about what biblical criticism is and what challenges it poses to believers. We'll cover these challenges under the headings the problem of originality, the problem of contradiction, and the problem of inspiration. Through all that, we will see how biblical criticism differs from theology, what it can and can't say based on its methods, and finally how we can relate it back to theology to make it a useful tool for Christians to take advantage of. We begin to lay out C. S. Lewis's case for a skeptical approach to the work of the Higher Critics. Episodes 109 and 110 together make up Part 4 of our series. On March 24th, 2022, the Associates for Biblical Research announced the discovery of an ancient curse tablet (defixio) on Mount Ebal at the site of "Joshua's altar." This is a potentially WORLD-SHAKING discovery, but the dust has not yet settled, and the academic war is only just beginning. Following the publication of the find and its analysis, the critical juggernaut, led by Drs. Christopher Rollston and Robert Cargill is proceeding apace in an apparent attempt to shut down serious investigation of this defixio. In episodes 107-110 we will investigate in some detail the critical evaluation of this discovery, with Dr. Rollston's position in episodes 108 & 109, and Dr. Cargill's in episode 110. In this series, as we promised in episode #52, we revisit this discovery following the publication of the scholarly paper on May 12th of this year. We hope to lay out the context and reasons this discovery and its controversial interpretation is so important. To do so, we must become acquainted with modern theology and biblical criticism as practiced in the contemporary West, the ongoing scholarly debate over the defixio, and finally to discuss C. S. I argue that they are attempting to poison the well, and are not engaging in a fair academic disagreement based on the reality being presented. In episodes 107-109 we will investigate in some detail the critical evaluation of this discovery, with Dr. Rollston's position in episode 108 and Dr. Cargill's in episode 109. S. Lewis's article, "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism." *Please see the link below to access the scholarly paper by Dr. Stripling and his associates, which is open access in the journal Heritage Science. The Greek sentence that opens Paul's letter to the Romans includes carefully worded claims about Paul's gospel. Crucially, Paul identifies some of what he means when he refers to Jesus as Christ/Messiah: He is a descendent of David and the Son of God. He is the latter not only as a result of the resurrection but in a special way through that event. Dr. Matthew V. Novenson is Professor of Biblical Criticism and Biblical Antiquities at the University of Edinburgh. Among recent publications are (author) Christ Among the Messiahs; Paul, Then and Now; and (co-editor) The Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the revelatory collection of Biblical texts, legal documents, community rules and literary writings. In 1946 a Bedouin shepherd boy was looking for a goat he'd lost in the hills above the Dead Sea. He threw a rock into a cave and heard a hollow sound. He'd hit a ceramic jar containing an ancient manuscript. This was the first of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a collection of about a thousand texts dating from around 250 BC to AD 68. It is the most substantial first hand evidence we have for the beliefs and practices of Judaism in and around the lifetime of Jesus. The Dead Sea Scrolls have transformed our understanding of how the texts that make up the Hebrew Bible were edited and collected. They also offer a tantalising window onto the world from which Christianity eventually emerged. With Sarah Pearce Ian Karten Professor of Jewish Studies and Head of the School of Humanities at the University of Southampton Charlotte Hempel Professor of Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism at the University of Birmingham and George Brooke Rylands Professor Emeritus of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester Producer Luke Mulhall
In this episode, Zen speaks with Dr. Ericka Shawndricka Dunbar about her book Trafficking Hadassah (Taylor & Francis Group, 2021). This book explores the Book of Esther by employing Africana biblical criticism. We discuss her method and some of the ways it leads her to read Esther differently. Dr. Ericka Shawndricka Dunbar is Assistant Professor in the Religion Department at Baylor University. Her area of research focuses broadly on gender, ethnicity, violence, intersectional oppression, sexual(ized) abuse, colonialism, trauma, and diasporic studies. More specifically, she engages in intersectional analyses of sexualized, gender-based, and colonial oppression in the Hebrew Bible.
Critical in this instance has to do with a systematic approach to understanding Scripture. Lower Criticism has to do with the existence of actual manuscripts, all of which differ in greater or lesser degree from each other. The higher criticism in this session will deal with the so-called W-Questions: (1) Who wrote biblical material?; (2) When was the material written?; (3) Why was the material written?; (4) To Whom was the material written?; (5) Where was the material written?
Over 4000 years ago, Hashem decided to restart the world, destroying the earth, and its inhabitants in a great flood. Only through building the ark were Noach and his family able to survive, and save enough animals for the world to continue. This story, described in the beginning of Genesis, has been subjected to many questions. How did Noach have the capability to build such an advanced ship? How did he collect all the animals? How did they fit? Why is there so much localized human diversity, if we are all descendants of one family? Why is there no geological evidence of a massive flood? Why do the histories of civilizations seem to predate the flood, which would have been the rise of those civilizations? Join Jewish Thoughtflow on our voyage through the deluge of questions.
In this episode we look at one of Spinoza's key legacies, creation of a secular world. The contemporary world in a cultural fashion is thoroughly secular. In this episode we look at some of Spinoza's key questions on the authenticity of Tanach. How original were his questions? How much before Spinoza should we assume that these questions were being raised? Do Chazal deal with any of these questions? How should this affect how we view these style questions? We also look at the claim that the Ibn Ezra is the source for the opinion that Moshe isn't the sole author of the Torah. We closely examine the, ‘secret of the twelve'. In conjunction with episode 52 of our Christian Atheist podcast, "Archaeology and Faith," in which we discuss the amazing discovery of a curse tablet on Mount Ebal in Israel. we present here an essay by C. S. Lewis that critiques the motivations behind much of the hostility toward biblical historicity. Here is a link to that episode: https://wisewordsforyouroccasion.podbean.com/e/52-christian-atheist/ Lewis here attacks the underlying assumptions that motivate the "higher criticism," and which they don't acknowledge as motivations. He also undermines the arrogance that fails to recognize its own weaknesses and limitations, and yet constructs what seems to them an iron-clad interpretation through textual criticism that, at best, should be approached with a certain degree of incredulity: "These men ask me to believe they can read between the lines of the old texts; the evidence is their obvious inability to read ... the lines themselves. They claim to see fern-seed and can't see an elephant ten yards away in broad daylight." This does not mean, of course, that biblical criticism is always wrong, or that its skeptical approach has no value: "We are not fundamentalists. We think that different elements in this sort of theology have different degrees of strength. The nearer it sticks to mere textual criticism, of the old sort ... the more we are disposed to believe in it. It is as we glide away from this into reconstructions of a subtler and more ambitious kind that our faith in the method wavers.... I could not speak with similar confidence about the circle I have chiefly lived in myself. I could not describe even the history of my own thought as confidently as these men describe the history of the early Church's mind. And I am perfectly certain no one else could.... It encourages a due agnosticism. For agnosticism is, in a sense, what I am preaching. I do not wish to reduce the sceptical element in your minds. I am only suggesting that it need not be reserved exclusively to the biblical text. Try doubting something else." He also undermines the arrogance that fails to recognize its own weaknesses and limitations, and yet constructs what seems to them an iron-clad interpretation through textual criticism that, at best, should be approached with a certain degree of incredulity: "These men ask me to believe they can read between the lines of the old texts; the evidence is their obvious inability to read ... the lines themselves. I am only suggesting that it need not be reserved exclusively" to the biblical text. "Try doubting something else." In conjunction with episode 52 of our Christian Atheist podcast, "Archaeology and Faith," in which we discuss the amazing discovery of a curse tablet on Mount Ebal in Israel. we present here an essay by C. Have you ever had anyone ask you “what is scripture?” For such a short question it has the possibility to open up into thousands of answers. For Latter-day Saints, it can be defined as “whatsoever [God's representatives] shall speak when moved upon by the Holy Ghost.” This definition is somewhat broader than many other Christian definitions of scripture, incorporating both written and spoken modes of inspiration. At the end of the day, though, scripture must be interpreted by the power of the Holy Ghost for edification. In the past several hundred years, though, some have looked to academic tools to prove the truth of religious texts. Professionals from fields like history, archaeology, and anthropology have sought to add detail from the empirical record to sacred texts. Those professionals are often women and men of faith. But what are the limits of using academic tools to “prove” religious truth? And how did that play out in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' during the first decades of the twentieth century? Today, Dr. Matthew Bowman of Claremont Graduate University is going to discuss that with us today, focusing on his article entitled “Biblical Criticism, the Book of Mormon, and the Meanings of Civilization,” in the most recent issue of The Journal of Book of Mormon Studies. We'll include a copy of the article in our newsletter, which you can subscribe to at mi.byu.edu/monthly-mi-news. The guys are back in the seventeenth century again, looking at the beginnings of challenges to biblical authority. Progressive thinkers of the day starting with the Jewish philosopher Spinoza attacked Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch as a way of undermining orthodox Christianity: since Jesus referred to Moses as the human author of the Law, if Moses didn't write it, then either Jesus lied or he didn't know. Either answer would challenge the idea that he was God incarnate. After discussing Spinoza, the guys turned to a debate on Mosaic authorship between French Catholic scholar Richard Simon and Remonstrant scholar Jean LeClerc. This debate, largely forgotten today, triggered a sharp movement away from historic Christian theology into liberal Christianity by thinkers such as John Locke.
