Poxy and Ragan interview Richard W. Haines (Splatter University, Class of Nuke 'Em High, Head Games,  etc.) about his 1989 Sci-Fi cult classic,  ALIEN SPACE AVENGER. For this film, Richard would use the dye transfer process, which was initially developed and marketed by Technicolor until 1975. In 1989, Richard would travel to China, where he would complete his prints at the Beijing Film Lab, which was the only location currently using this dye transfer process by that time. Later, he would go on to write several books, one of which covered Technicolor movies and the history of dye transfer printing. It is this book, Technicolor: The History of Dye Transfer Printing, that Poxy and Ragan also discuss at length as they and Richard dive deep into the history of Technicolor films and how they were created.

MAYbe it's a horror movie continues! This week, we are doing Toys, starring the late and great, Robin Williams. This inexcusably unsettling movie was a 10-year passion project by writer/ director, Barry Levinson (and then wife, Valerie Cutrin). It is inarguably polarizing, because while it was nominated for a Razzie for worst director, it also received Oscar nominations for Art Direction and Costume Design. Joan Cusack plays robot, Alsatia Zevo, which is oddly similar to Bicentennial Man, also starring Williams. The film also features a pre-Halloween H20 and Deep Blue Sea LL Cool J, who not so subtly wishes to engage in coitus with his cousin-robot. Post-Princess-Bride, but pre-House-of-Cards Robin Wright plays the love interest with a charming southern drawl. Can she just talk like that all of the time? Italian designer, Ferdinando Scarfiotti, spent one year working on this film. You know, the Academy Award Winning designer behind The Last Emperor and Scarface. The music was by Hans Zimmer and Trevor Horn, featuring Tori Amos and Enya. Jake also sits down with writer/ director, Richard W. Haines. While you may know him from Troma's Class of Nuke 'Em High, Haines went on to found his own competing studio: New Wave Film Distribution. His own films include Space Avenger, Head Games, and Splatter University. He also is an accomplished author, writing film treatises such as Technicolor Movies, but also novels like Production Value, Reel Danger, and The Anastasia Killer. This week, we are continuing our TroMarch collaboration with Damn, That's Scary with probably the second most famous Troma film ever: Class of Nuke 'Em High! Written and directed by Richard W. Haines, Michael Herz, and good ol' Uncle Lloyd Kaufman (under that weird pseudonym Samuel Weil), the film takes us back to Tromaville, New Jersey. More specifically, we end up at Tromaville High. This film features veterans of multiple other Troma films such as Toxic Avenger, Lexx, and Werewolf Bitches from Outer Space, which unless I am much mistaken, won Best Picture in 2016. Pat Ryan Jr. plays Mr. Paley. You may recall that he was in Street Trash, a film which is often mistaken for a Troma joint. The title track was written and performed by Ethan Hurt and The Coup. Jake failed to mention that if you speed that song up to like 1.25x speed, it is a serious jammer. The film had several sequels: Class of Nuke 'Em High 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown, Class of Nuke 'Em High 3: The Good, the Bad and the Subhumanoid, Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1, and finally Return to Return to Nuke 'EM High AKA Volume 2. The original Nuke 'Em featured some seriously gnarly creature effects. The biggest missed opportunity in film history was not putting this monster against one of those radioactive squirrels from the sequels. This episode also features an interview with Nathan Baesel of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. We discuss his acting process, his teaching experience, and what plans are ahead for his career. We talk sequels, prequels, and the Leslie Vernon comicbook. You can find him on social medial @nbaesel. Be sure to check out Damn, That's Scary and all their episodes for TroMarch, featuring mini reviews from Slashers. If a movie makes less sense than Horror House on Highway Five… we know we’re in trouble. Grab your arsenic-laced prune juice because this week we’re talking Troma’s SPLATTER UNIVERSITY! Directed by Richard W. Haines, Splatter University is very loosely about new Professor Julie Parker who arrives to her new position with a history of murder. Then her Sociology students start getting stabbed to death. Why? Ummm… maybe sinning or something? Forbes Riley really does her best with what she’s given as Julie and Kathy LaCommare as one of her students Kathy was also a standout… but the plot is virtually non-existent. There’s a weird narrative about reproductive rights and safe sex strung throughout, some of the biggest asshole characters we’ve talked about and an infuriating ending. Are you seeing Mark?

Disfruten camaradas!
