When two Daves walk into a podcast, you don't expect to stumble upon a meditation on art, failure, persistence, and horror-comedy. But that's exactly what happened in this electric and delightfully unfiltered conversation with Dave Campfield, a filmmaker, actor, and host of the Troma Now Podcast, best known for his work in the cult Caesar and Otto comedy-horror film series.Dave Campfield is a fiercely independent filmmaker whose journey from a now-defunct film college in New Mexico to directing his own cult horror satires has been a long and winding road paved with hustle, humor, and horror. We start in the sand-colored surrealism of Santa Fe, where adobe buildings and the ghost of City Slickers set the stage for Dave's early filmmaking dreams. In the land of tumbleweeds and tumble-down gym studios turned sound stages, Dave cut his teeth not just on film but on the art of adaptation. The college no longer exists, but the memories—like chalk lines under studio lights—remain vivid in his story. “It was like going to school on Tatooine,” he says, laughing, but behind that joke is a bittersweet nod to the ephemeral. From there, Dave walks us through the illusion of success—early meetings with Universal and New Line Cinema where hopes were dangled like carrots in front of eager young dreamers. The industry, he quickly learned, speaks its own coded language: familiarity, marketability, and sometimes, plain deception. One mentor told him to “say you're young, from the streets, and have a dark comedy,” regardless of truth. Dave gave it a shot but came away with the haunting realization that "they were intrigued enough to keep me on leash, but not enough to make it happen."That experience seeded his first real film, “Dark Chamber,” a mystery-horror project which deliberately bucked slasher formulas. It took five years to make—five years of blood, sweat, and overdrafts. And yet, when the studios responded with, “We wanted something more familiar,” Dave knew he was swimming upstream. Still, he sold the film to a small distributor, endured its repackaging as something it wasn't, and got it onto Netflix. A win—just not the one he envisioned. But here's the heart of it all: Dave didn't stop. He pivoted, not with bitterness, but with evolution. “I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people waiting for opportunity. You had to make it happen on your own.” And so, he leaned into comedy horror—a genre he describes as “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, but for the splatter generation.” Thus, Caesar and Otto were born: two absurdly lovable doofuses bumbling their way through massacres, monsters, and paranormal mayhem. One of Dave's secret weapons is loyalty to what's real. Whether recounting how Lloyd Kaufman forgot him (then remembered) or editing commercials for the Philadelphia Pet Expo, he keeps a kind of grounded magic about his craft. He shares a deeply personal new project, “Awaken the Reaper,” born from a decade of introspection and struggle, calling it “the most personal thing I've ever written.” He says, “It's about being stuck—feeling like every day you're not moving forward—and finally getting out of your own way.”All along, Dave's been quietly building a reputation for casting future stars before they break—Trey Byers (Empire), Peter Scanavino (Law & Order)—and hosting a podcast that thrives not just because of brand synergy with Troma, but because he genuinely knows how to talk to people. “They've never rejected an episode,” he remarks. “I tease Troma a lot, and they're always game. It's a beautiful collaboration.”The conversation wraps not with grandiosity, but a recognition that even the smallest cult followings can keep a creator going. “My fanbase is small, but intense,” Dave says with pride. “I can rattle them off on two hands.” Maybe that's enough. Maybe that's everything.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Sonny lægger stille ud med 'Going in Style' (1979).

The story so far: Three friends are trapped in an underground movie rental store managed by a magical anthropomorphic mole man, have adventures, and watch movies to pass the time and figure ways out of predicaments. While Eric is off on a journey of reflection and relaxation, Greg worries that the underground could be filled with more monstrous creatures like Moleman! To help ease our minds and get ready for potential monster attacks, we check out the Frogman monster flick from 1980, Rana: The Legend of Shadow Lake, directed by Blood Harvest's own Bill Rebane! While discussing the similarities of the two films, we dive into life's real existential questions: Do frogs have bones? Can chickens swim? Does Bigfoot have a tickle kink? And are aliens cryptids? Check out the episode to find out the answers to (some of) those questions!Leave us a 30 second voicemail and if we like it we'll play it on the show: (949) 4-STABBY (949-478-2229)Next movie announced every Wednesday. Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman returns to drop a lot of names and talk to the boys about his new book (kinda), Hands Across Tromerica, whether or not that really is him in the trailer for the new “Superman” movie, the“Toxic Avenger” re-make and, for some reason, the tragic death of Jayne Mansfield. This week's podcast was brought to you by Teambrown Apparel, Old Fort Baseball Co and Patrick's Custom Painting.

Lloyd Kaufman, the legendary co-founder of Troma Entertainment and the mastermind behind The Toxic Avenger, has spent decades pushing the boundaries of independent filmmaking. In this exclusive interview, we dive deep into his fearless approach to cinema, the DIY spirit of Troma, and his unfiltered thoughts on the future of indie films. From cult classics to Hollywood resistance, Kaufman has seen it all—and he's got a lot to say.Special thanks to Linda R Wolfe for making this happen.
PUBLIC VERSION. Acclaimed filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (LISTEN UP PHILLIP, HER SMELL, CHRISTOPHER ROBIN) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his new video essay “Videoheaven” and his massive concert film GHOST: RITE HERE RITE NOW. From reminiscing about video stores… to a mutual appreciation for TROMA and school lunches… to the process behind creating three distinctive, non-linear projects… to spending well over a decade on his most personal passion project about the rise and fall of video stores… to intimately working with the enormously popular pop-metal band GHOST… to his new documentary/concert film PAVEMENTS (in theaters later this year)… this Altman-esque conversation (filled with classic MOVIE CRYPT diatribes and asides) shows just how much Alex is an ever evolving artist that is satisfying his many interests in an industry that typically just wants to box you up like a VHS clamshell.

And to celebrate the J.G. decided to dig up an interview that was previously unreleased related to holiday. In 1981, George Mihalka's Canadian slasher My Bloody Valentine hit theaters. In the years since it has become a cult classic, enough so, in fact, to get a Hollywood remake in 2009 directed by Wes Craven protege Patrick Lussier & starring heartthrob Jensen Ackles from the hit TV show Supernatural. The original movie, in which a town known as Valentine Bluffs experiences a series of murders seemingly committed by a vengeful, deranged miner known as Harry Warden, has never received a proper sequel. Fans of the movie, however, came together to get a professionally done, feature-length fan sequel. It's called Valentine Bluffs: A My Bloody Valentine Fan Film and even features a guest starring performance from Troma's Lloyd Kaufman as the Mayor of Valentine Bluffs. It features all the bloody mayhem one would expect from a sequel to My Bloody Valentine, and, best of all for fans of 80s horror, features lovingly made practical effects rather than CGI. In this previously unreleased interview, I speak with director and special effects artist Tom Smith and lead actress Rachel Keefe about Valentine Bluffs: A My Bloody Valentine Fan Film in-depth! You can view the fan film for free on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIIOv49awUU. Near the end of the conversation Rachel talks about her upcoming role in Joe Lam's horror movie The Fetus. As it turns out, The Fetus is set to be released next month, March 2025, and, in addition to Rachel Keefe, stars Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3's Lauren LaVera as well as genre stalwart Bill Moseley from Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre! All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views!

We also discuss a bunch of other topics including the cleaning advice subreddit, Brad making a bird wall, the geography of Michigan, Diablo 4, Cherry Falls and Brittney Murphy's special request, the movie The Kiss, Troma stuff, innocuous horror movie lines, who is the dorkiest quarterback, Sean does Hooptober, the movie The Bees, the Subspecies series, cool lady Wynter gets a special shirt for John Carpenter, who is the podcast's favorite murderer, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell commentaries, noted maniac John Milius, some cassettes and Larry Wish talk, Bo Knows Bo, Jurassic Park: the book, is Watership Down sci-fi, Sean's concert rundown, seeing Goblin in concert with Claudio Simonetti's daughter doing interpretive dance, the Taco Bell discontinued items menu returns, further investigation into Taco Bell's insane food graveyard, a controversial Burger King opinion, Sean gets got by engagement bait posting about grilled stuffed burritos, and a certain special dog (not that one, but also that one). AEW Dynamite brought the madness from Huntsville, and The AEW-some Pod is here to sift through the wreckage! Your co-hosts Johnny Taylor (The Hard Times, Tubi), Diana Prince (The Last Drive-In), and Gringo Fantastico (Disasterpiece Theater on Troma) are back with their signature wit, sarcasm, and total disregard for playing nice. Will Ospreay and Brian Cage delivered a banger, but the Don Callis Family turned it into a mugging. Jeff Jarrett made the fatal mistake of declining MJF's offer, which ended with his face eating a Dynamite Diamond Ring. Ricochet and AR Fox put on an aerial clinic—before Swerve Strickland made it deeply personal. Jay White and Wheeler Yuta went to war, and Kenny Omega found himself caught between a chair, a hard place, and Kyle Fletcher's loyalty. Meanwhile, Mariah May torched Toni Storm with words sharper than any blade, and Mercedes Moné proved why she's still the boss against Yuka Sakazaki. Who was the heel of the week? Who stole the show? And how many times can one episode of Dynamite descend into absolute bedlam? Give that Joe guy a raise! Everything else though.... Fanatic, released in 1982 and later distributed by Troma under the title The Last Horror Film, is an ambitious yet confused attempt at blending psychological thriller, horror, satire, and social commentary. Directed by David Winters, the film follows Vinny Durand (Joe Spinell), a socially awkward taxi driver in New York who dreams of becoming a Hollywood filmmaker. Vinny's obsession with horror star Jana Bates (Caroline Munro) takes a dark turn when he follows her to the Cannes Film Festival, believing he can convince her to star in his debut film. Soon, people connected to Jana begin to disappear, leaving the audience to wonder if Vinny's fantasies have turned murderous. On the surface, Fanatic has all the trappings of a Taxi Driver knockoff, with Spinell's Vinny bearing eerie similarities to De Niro's Travis Bickle: a lonely man whose delusions of grandeur lead to a disturbing descent into obsession. However, where Taxi Driver offers a focused character study and searing critique of urban decay, Fanatic meanders between tones, never quite deciding what it wants to be. Is it a darkly comedic jab at the absurdity of the film industry, with its over-the-top Cannes sequences and caricatured players? A horror film dissecting the dangers of unchecked fandom? Or a social critique of anti-horror activists and censorship? The movie flirts with all these ideas but fails to commit to any, leaving the audience in a muddled state of uncertainty. There's undeniable charm in its chaotic ambition, but the result is a mishmash of clashing themes and tonal inconsistencies. What Fanatic does have, however, is Joe Spinell. His performance is nothing short of extraordinary, especially given the film's modest budget. Spinell imbues Vinny with a mix of vulnerability, creepiness, and manic energy that is utterly captivating. His ability to oscillate between pitiable and menacing elevates the film far beyond what one might expect from a low-budget production, especially one released by Troma. Spinell's portrayal is a masterclass in character work, showing what can be achieved even in a film with clear limitations. Despite its flaws, Fanatic has its moments of intrigue and campy fun. The Cannes backdrop offers a unique setting for a horror film, and there's an undeniable novelty in watching Spinell and Munro share the screen again after Maniac. But for all its ambition, Fanatic ultimately bites off more than it can chew. It's a film that tries to be everything and ends up being little more than a curiosity piece—worth watching for Spinell's mesmerizing performance, but a frustrating experience for those hoping for cohesion or a clear narrative purpose.
Happy New Season as The Spoiler Room Crew Gather for "Horrifically Musical" Month. We look at the 1993 Troma released horror comedy musical from the guys who would later unleash South Park on to the world. We talk about how "Cannibal The Musical" felt like a bit a testing ground for South Park while standing on its own as a wild and crazy movie. We may wander off the path a bit but we do not start eating each other...or do we? Please consider episode 236 to be our late Christmas present to you all! We are looking at two recent films from director Ryan Kruger, starting off with Fried Barry from 2020. This is such a trippy, insane and full-tilt experience that it might leave you scratching your head the first time you watch it. This isn't a bad thing since it only gets better each time you watch it! We follow that up with 2024's Street Trash, which is a sequel to the 1987 film of the same name. Though it has moments where it seems like it's trying to make a point about corporations and society, it's really just a really fun Troma-inspired movie with some great splattery effects, and some genuinely hilarious comedy. We highly recommend BOTH films! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. On this episode, Will chats with Matt Manjourides, producer of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and the follow up film to 1987's horror Street Trash .Matt grew up in 1980s Swampscott, MA - inspired by the action and horror films at the time, he made home movies with friends when not working at the family restaurant in Boston. After working with legend Lloyd Kaufman at Troma, Matt created production company Not the Funeral Home, reviving horror hosting with The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob on AMC+ and Shudder, producing high-value, low-budget films and raising over half a million dollars for charity.Watch Joe Bob's Christmas Carnage live on December 13 on Shudder TV or AMC+ TV. Snow is falling and the bodies are piling up for Joe Bob's Christmas Carnage, when Joe Bob and Darcy host two holiday horror flicks featuring so much bloodshed that Santa will think twice before coming down this chimney.Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@1980snowFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1980snow.Become a patron at www.patreon.com/1980snowEmail us at will@1980snow.com or kat@1980snow.com.
What's up, Rotters! This week, I'm joined by two of my favourite guests Joe La Scola and Sean O'Rourke aka Movie Dumpster to discuss the TROMA trashterpice GIRLS SCHOOL SCREAMERS (1986) Although not originally a TROMA produced movie, once Lloyd and the gang got their hands on it, they made sure to add some unmistakable TROMA touches such as worms, meat hooks and swamp creatures. Do they belong in this movie? Absolutely not. Do they improve this movie? Absolutely. Toodles! ————

As we enter the home stretch of 1984, we have a some great (and terrible) movies remaining on the schedule and will do all we can to make sure we hit them all. Enjoy the podcast and... This year two films he produced, and one he wrote, will make their festival run; “Bang Bang” starring Tim Blake Nelson and the later, “Train Dreams,” starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones directed by Clint Bently. On this episode he talks about his improvisational sweet spot and how it rests in the heart of danger and risk, brings us back to his beginnings at UNCSA and the reasons why that school didn't work so well for him, charts his own journey discovering his way into the craft, tells some hilarious and relatable audition stories, plus an eye opening one from the other side of the table, and much more.
