Stanley Lloyd Kaufman never really wanted to make movies, but wanted to work in Broadway musicals. During his years in Yale, though, he got introduced to "B" pictures and the works of Roger Corman. Lloyd later got the opportunity to executive-produce a short movie made by a fellow student. The film, called "Rappacini", got him even more interested in movies. He bought his own camera and took it with him to Chad, Africa, were he spent his summer. There, he shot a 15-minute film of a pig being slaughtered. That was his first movie, and was the birth of what was later to become known as Troma Films. He showed the footage of the squealing pig being killed to his family, and their shocked reaction to it made him wonder if making movies that shocked audiences would keep them in their seats to see what would happen next.He wanted to be a director right then and there, so he got a couple of friends at Yale and made his second movie, The Girl Who Returned (1969). People loved it, and he went straight to work on other films, helping out on projects like Joe (1970), Rocky (1976) and Saturday Night Fever (1977).Lloyd put in a lot of long, hard hours in the film business, just to be in the credits and to get money for his next project, a full-length feature. It was a tribute to Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and the classic era of silent-film comedy.Even though Lloyd hated the movie when it was finally completed, people seemed to love it. He formed a studio called 15th Street Films with friends and producers Frank Vitale and Oliver Stone. Together, they made Sugar Cookies (1973) and Cry Uncle (1971), directed by John G. Avildsen. A friend from Yale, Michael Herz, saw Lloyd in a small scene in "Cry Uncle" and contacted him to try to get into the film business, too. Kaufman took Herz in, as the company needed some help after Oliver Stone quit to make his own movies. Michael invested in a film they thought would be their biggest hit yet, Schwartz: The Brave Detective (1973) (aka "Big Gus, What's the Fuss?"). It turned out to be a huge flop and 15th Street Films was ruined. Lloyd and Michael owed thousands of dollars to producers and friends and family members who had invested in the picture.Lloyd, trying to find a quick way to pay off the bills, made The Divine Obsession (1976), and with Michael formed Troma Studios, hoping to make some decent movies, since they only owned the rights to films they thought were poor. They were introduced to Joel M. Reed, who had an unfinished movie called "Master Sardu and the Horror Trio". The film was re-edited and completed at Troma Studios (which actually consisted of just one room) during 1975, re-titled and released in 1976 as Blood Sucking Freaks (1976) (aka "Bloodsucking Freaks"). It was enough of a success to enable them to pay the rent so they wouldn't lose the company.Lloyd later got a call from a theater that wanted a "sexy movie" like The Divine Obsession (1976), but about softball (!). The resulting film, Squeeze Play (1979), used up all the money Troma had earned from "Bloodsucking Freaks" and, as it turned out, no one wanted to see it--not even the theater owner who wanted it made in the first place (he actually wanted a porno movie). Just when things looked their darkest, they got a call from another theater which was scheduled to show a film, but the distributor pulled it at the last minute. Troma rushed "Squeeze Play" right over, and it turned out to be a huge hit. Lloyd, Michael and Troma eventually made millions from it, and had enough money to buy their own building (which still remains as Troma Headquarters). Troma then turned out a stream of "sexy" comedies--i.e., Waitress! (1982), The First Turn-On!! (1983), Stuck on You! (1983)--but there was a glut of "T&A" films on the market. Troma noticed that a lot of comedies were being made, and decided to make one, too, but much different than the rest. After reading an article that claimed horror movies were dead, Lloyd got the idea to combine both horror and comedy, and Troma came up with "Health Club Horror"--later retitled and released as The Toxic Avenger (1984), a monster hit that finally put Troma on the map.Lloyd Kaufman and Troma have become icons in the cult-movie world, and Troma has distributed over 1000 films. Lloyd has continued his career as a director in addition to producing, and Troma has turned out such films as Monster in the Closet (1986), Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986), Combat Shock (1984), Troma's War (1988), and Fortress of Amerikkka (1989), and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006), which follows an army of undead chickens as they seek revenge on a fast food palace. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement

Some context leading to my conversation with Maya:When I first thought of a constitutional amendment to protect us from pollution, I thought the idea was crazy, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. The more I did, the more it made sense.Since learning about the Thirteenth Amendment prompted me to think of it, I first spoke to previous guest James Oakes about it. Since it involved constitutional law, I spoke to previous guest (and Nobel Prize holder) Seth Shelden, who put me in touch with his constitutional law professor and previous guest Michael Herz. Besides my conversations with them one-on-one, I also spoke with Michael and Jim together. I recommend listening and watching those conversations for context. My conversation with Maya:Then I learned of Maya's work with "green amendments," as she calls them, at the state level as a foundation for the federal level. She has been working on it for years. She shares that history, including a major win in Pennsylvania and New York State's recently becoming the third state with a green amendment. She describes the value of an amendment over statutory law, how current legislation doesn't prohibit pollution it legalizes it, the state of the movement, and goals. If you, as I did, considered environmental amendments interesting but far-fetched, you'll love this episode. The Toxic Avenger is a 1984 American superhero black comedy splatter film directed by Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman (credited as Samuel Weil) and written by Kaufman and Joe Ritter. It is the first installment of The Toxic Avenger franchise. The film was released by Troma Entertainment, known for producing low budget B-movies with campy concepts and gruesome violence. Virtually ignored upon its first release, The Toxic Avenger caught on with filmgoers after a long and successful midnight movie engagement at the Bleecker Street Cinema in Greenwich Village in late 1985. Regular listeners know I'm thinking about applying Abraham's Lincoln solution: a constitutional amendment banning pollution. Here's an earlier episode on it: 613: Our Next Constitutional Amendment. It sounds crazy, but we'd be crazy not to consider it and learn from the idea. Even if the United States takes a long time to do it, other countries would likely do it first. It turns out others are organizing for a similar amendment, for the right to a clean environment.Michael's expertise in constitutional law and environmental law make him perfect to give context in those two areas. One day even the U.S. will show overwhelming support for an amendment making pollution illegal, a modern version of the Thirteenth Amendment. Future generations will lament how we took so long to conceive and pass it. It begins with conversations like this one.Michael's Home Page Hosted on Acast. In the scene one can see that his right arm is a prosthetic, as he never moves or uses this arm until Toxie rips it off.Patrick Kilpatrick who played Leroy (the face-painted criminal at the Mexican restaurant) quit the film after having to point a shotgun at a baby.A deleted scene, which is available on the DVD, shows Toxie throwing a Peanut Butter and Drano sandwich, smacking the face of Sara's next door neighbor. Playing Sara's next door neighbor is Mitch Cohen without his Toxic Avenger make-up.It took four hours to get Mitch Cohen into the Toxic Avenger costume. While wearing it, he could only eat through a straw. While shooting in Shinbone Alley, a homeless man stole a prop gun from one of the trailers and threatened the crew. The seeing eye dog that was shot had been trained to glide across the floor on command and its "guts" were spaghetti covered in gray paint. The spinning newspapers were simply newspapers placed on a spinning cheese rack.Web: https://theguysreview.simplecast.com/ EM: theguysreviewpod@gmail.com IG: @TheGuysReviewPod TW: @The_GuysReview - Twitter DM group FB: https://facebook.com/TheGuysReviewPod/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYKXJhq9LbQ2VfR4K33kT9Q Please, Subscribe, rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts from!!

Accidentally shot as a four-hour film, then split into two (with the later TOXIC AVENGER, PART III: THE LAST TEMPTATION OF TOXIE), the second entry of this ooey, gooey franchise struggles to live up to the triumphs of the original, but there are reasons for this. In this very special episode, James Mullinger is reunited with the first person that he ever interviewed over 25 years ago: his all all-time hero, Lloyd Kaufman. As any movie fan will know, Lloyd Kaufman is the director of The Toxic Avenger films and co-founder of Troma Entertainment, the longest running independent movie studio in North America.   Lloyd is a proud New Yorker and is the first non-Canadian to ever appear on the show, because without Lloyd this show wouldn't exist.    Born in New York in 1945, Lloyd graduated from Yale University in 1968, where he majored in Chinese studies. His fellow Yale classmates included Oliver Stone and George W. Bush. In 1974, Lloyd and his business partner Michael Herz founded Troma Entertainment and began producing and distributing independent action and comedy films. At the same time, Kaufman also did freelance work for major Hollywood productions including Rocky and Saturday Night Fever. Lloyd is still making films now including such instant classics as Return To Nuke Em High Volume 2 and Shakespeare's Sh*tstorm.    Many high profile filmmakers began their careers at Troma. Kevin Costner's first movies were with Troma. James Gunn began his career with Troma. Trey Parker and Matt Stone made Cannibal: The Musical for Troma before creating South Park. Others whose careers were helped by Troma include Eli Roth, Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robert De Niro. Troma continues to be a haven for independent directors and young talent during an era of corporate takeovers. Indeed, James Mullinger's first foray into magazine editing was a Troma fanzine aged 12 and his excitement at speaking with his hero once again, is palpable.

On this edition of Parallax Views, for nearly 50 years Troma has been the independent movie studio with an uncompromising vision that has alternately grossed out, offended, and entertained audiences from around the world with such features as The Toxcic Avenger franchise, the Class of Nuke Em High series, Troma's War, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Tromeo and Juliet (penned by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame), and, most recently, #ShakespeareShitstorm among others! They've also distributed such madcap films as Surf Nazis Must Die, Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town (starring before-he-was-famous Billy Bob Thornton), and Monster in the Closet (starring a before-he-was-famous Paul Walker) as well as such challenging and controversial cinema as Story of a Junkie, Combat Shock, and the experimental films of Giuseppe Andrews (Detroit Rock City, Cabin Fever). Joining us to discuss the little movie studio that could is Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma alongside Michael Herz. Be forewarned, Lloyd is irreverent, non-pc, and speaks his mind. As I say in the show intro "You will be triggered". In the course of our conversation Lloyd and I discuss a number of topics including what a Troma film is (for the unfamiliar), how Lloyd went from attending Yale in the hopes of becoming a social worker to catching the film bug, whether or not people confuse Troma for being a right-wing "shock jock" enterprise like Breitbart or the antic of Steve Bannon, Hollywood's silence on the New Jim Crow laws of Georgia, Lloyd's appearance on the Morton Downey Jr. Show, the influence of French cinema and Auteur Theory on Lloyd and Troma's work, Troma films as being steeped in satire and often based on events and social issues of the day, the influence of Andy Warhol on Lloyd and the Troma's movie Sugar Cookies (starring cult actress and Warhol factory girl Mary Woronov), working on the big budget Hollywood movie The Final Countdown w/ Kirk Douglas, working on John G. Avildsen's Rocky and Saturday Night Fever, C. Wright Mills' Power Elite theory and Lloyd's theory of the elite, the problem of Hollywood, the influence of Stan Lee and Marvel on Troma, Lloyd's socialist relatives and their influence on him growing up (we talk about Cuba, Fidel Castro, etc.!), Lloyd's love of the underdog, LGBTQ+ fans of Troma, Lloyd's appearance in The Last Blockbuster, a story about Lloyd's problem with Hollywood involving the great actor and writer Trent Haaga, and much, much more.

This week, we are continuing our TroMarch collaboration with Damn, That's Scary with probably the second most famous Troma film ever: Class of Nuke 'Em High! Written and directed by Richard W. Haines, Michael Herz, and good ol' Uncle Lloyd Kaufman (under that weird pseudonym Samuel Weil), the film takes us back to Tromaville, New Jersey. More specifically, we end up at Tromaville High. This film features veterans of multiple other Troma films such as Toxic Avenger, Lexx, and Werewolf Bitches from Outer Space, which unless I am much mistaken, won Best Picture in 2016. Pat Ryan Jr. plays Mr. Paley. You may recall that he was in Street Trash, a film which is often mistaken for a Troma joint. The title track was written and performed by Ethan Hurt and The Coup. Jake failed to mention that if you speed that song up to like 1.25x speed, it is a serious jammer. The film had several sequels: Class of Nuke 'Em High 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown, Class of Nuke 'Em High 3: The Good, the Bad and the Subhumanoid, Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1, and finally Return to Return to Nuke 'EM High AKA Volume 2. The original Nuke 'Em featured some seriously gnarly creature effects. The biggest missed opportunity in film history was not putting this monster against one of those radioactive squirrels from the sequels. This episode also features an interview with Nathan Baesel of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. We discuss his acting process, his teaching experience, and what plans are ahead for his career. We talk sequels, prequels, and the Leslie Vernon comicbook. You can find him on social medial @nbaesel. Be sure to check out Damn, That's Scary and all their episodes for TroMarch, featuring mini reviews from Slashers. Somewhere between the suburbs of depravity and the Boulevard of bad taste lies a quaint little burrow known as Tromaville. Unfortunately, Tromaville’s inhabitants reside under the thumb of political corruption and live in fear of the cavalcades of murderous maniacs who roam the streets in search of bloody mayhem. However, born out of a tragedy a hero will rise to take out the trash of the forces of evil and literally clean up the mess of the foulest of the foul, mop in hand. Legendary director Lloyd Kaufman is president of New York-based production and distribution company Troma Entertainment, which he and partner Michael Herz founded in 1974 shortly after they graduated from Yale University. Troma is a bastion of true independence with a strong consumer brand through a visionary body of work that has had a huge impact on pop culture and today's mainstream filmmaking. New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick recently wrote that Mr. Kaufman has been cited as a major influence by Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino and Takashi Miike, among others. Other writers and directors who have cited Mr. Kaufman as a major influence include Sam Raimi, James Gunn, Kevin Smith and Eli Roth, to name a few. In addition, Mr. Kaufman has mentored many young independent filmmakers and Troma movies or releases have given numerous now-famous talent their first start in the film industry, including Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Costner, Oliver Stone, Marisa Tomei, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jenna Fisher. Other major figures whose first work appears in a Troma film include Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and Carmen Electra. In addition, Mr. Kaufman has been honored by various international film festivals and Troma retrospectives across the globe, including the San Sebastian Film Festival, the British Film Institute, the Cinematheque Francaise, the American Cinemetheque, the Chicago International Film Festival and the UCLA Film Archives. Fluent in French and able to "get around" in Mandarin, he has also served on the Board of Trinity School and ECO, the environmental foundation.TROMA NOW! http://watch.troma.com/Instagram @tromateam @watchtromanow @unclelloydkaufmanTwitter @Troma_Team @watchtromanow @lloydkaufmanSUBSCRIBE, RATE and tell us what you like about the podcast.More about the host:Instagram: @dikengaTwitter: @sbaldersonwww.FilmmakingConfidential.com

Dave Campfield is a filmmaker, plays Caesar in the comedy team, 'Caesar & Otto', and hosts the Troma Now Podcast. On the basis of his first script, Dave Campfield won over a Hollywood agent. However, while receiving across the board positive reviews from the studios, the script remained limbo. Having grown disheartened with Hollywood gridlock, Campfield opted to go it alone and produce a feature himself. That film, Dark Chamber, had a successful run in the film festivals, and was picked up for distribution by Pop Cinema. Campfield is currently readying his next production, a psychological horror entitled Fear the Reaper which already placed amongst the finalists at a previous Slamdance Horror screenwriting competition. In this episode we chat how Dave Campfield's college no longer exists, the worst on set experiences including someone pulling a knife on a 1st AD, getting work with Troma, creating his own movies, and tons more. PRE - SHOW NOTES— Game Over is the TV pilot I shot several years ago about 5 employees working at a video game store struggling to get to the next level in their lives.Tagline: In life there is no reset buttonThe goal is to get a lot of eyeballs on this so if you know anyone that'd be interested please share this with them.— Game Over – Making a TV Pilot – The blog post with all of the behind the scenes details about making, Game Over.— How NOT to make a TV Pilot – My interview with Alex Ferrari at Indie Film Hustle— Backstage –  Use code dbcast at checkout when posting a casting call for a FREE basic listing— Dave Bullis Podcast Filmmakers Group on Facebook – a FREE filmmaking group I made on Facebook.— Shopping for the holidays on Amazon? Many of them play on 1950s horror with elements of farce, parody, gore and splatter. In 2012, the company officially released many of its films on YouTube. Troma has produced, acquired and distributed over 1,000 independent films since its creation. Its slogan in 2014 was "40 years of Disrupting Media".-- Make Your Own Damn Movie (filmmaking Book) - Lloyd Kaufman, the writer/producer/director of such cult-classic films as The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and Tromeo and Juliet, offers a guide to movie-making unlike any other available anywhere. In 25 years, Kaufman, along with partner Michael Herz, has built Troma Studios up from a company struggling to find its voice in a field crowded with competitors to its current--and legendary--status as a lone survivor, a bastion of true cinematic independence, and the world's greatest collection of camp on film. As entertaining and funny as it is informative and insightful, Make Your Own Damn Movie! places Kaufman's radically low-budget, independent-studio style of filmaking directly in the reader's hands. Thus we learn how to: develop and write a knock-out screenplay; raise funding; find locations and cast actors; hire a crew; obtain equipment, permits, and music rights (all for little or no money); make incredible special effects for $0.79 each; charm, schmooze, and network while on the film-festival circuit; and, finally, make a bad actor act so bad it's actually good. From scriptwriting and directing to financing and marketing, this book is brimming with utterly off-the-wall, decidedly maverick, yet consistently proven advice on how to fully develop one's idea for an independent film.-- Lauren Francesca - Actress, Comedian, Humanitarian, Producer, and Youtuber. -- 1,000 True Fans - To be a successful creator you don't need millions. I've known Jeffrey Sass for many years. We've become friends through the digital channels. It started back when I was speaking at an event in South Florida and stumbled into a domain name convention and auction. I watched the domain Jeans.com go for a ridiculous amount of money. Jeffrey Sass didn't buy that domain, but he's been a part of that scene for a long time. Currently, he's the CMO for .CLUB - now a global brand, and one of the top and most used new domain extensions. What I did not know is his history is helping to market B movies. In the evolution of his career in marketing, he joined the Troma Entertainment team, having met Troma Founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, when he was working in a film and TV distributor. He had a long and enjoyable stay in Tromaville, and was deeply involved in writing and producing as well as video and television sales. Troma launched The Toxic Crusaders Saturday morning cartoon series, in addition to contributing creatively to the show, he launched and ran Troma's in-house licensing and merchandising arm, making deals with more than 70 licensees worldwide, including Marvel Comics. So, he recently published the fascinating read, Everything I Know about Business and Marketing, I Learned from The Toxic Avenger - (One Man's Journey to Hell's Kitchen and Back). If that were not enough, he also handled licensing and merchandising for the Emmy Award-winning PBS show, Reading Rainbow. Enjoy the conversation...   Running time: 57:17. Merry Christmas, Jason Miller! Your wife, Aime thought it would be a nice present to commission you a pair of podcasts to open beneath the tree. This is one of them, 1984's cult horror classic, "The Toxic Avenger". Directed by Michael Herz and "starring" Mitch Cohen, Mark Torgl, Andree Maranda, it's a work of pure cinematic insanity of over the top and cheaply filmed gore, sex, violence, and sexual violence. We discuss Troma films in general, pollution, dick punching, and much more as we attempt to review a movie that defies criticism. We hope you enjoyed your presents, Jason, and thanks again to Aime for commissioning them! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tracking er tilbage og det er med et brag af en film!! Troma byder på T&A i denne teen sex comedy THE FIRST TURN-ON fra 1983.

When Chevron was first decided it was generally welcomed on the right side of the political spectrum as a principled method constraining judicial discretion and permitting the executive to exert policy control over the administrative state. But as the administrative state continues to grow, some now see Chevron as removing an important check on government power and an abdication of the judiciary’s authority to say what the law is. Some members of the Supreme Court are now open to reconsidering judicial deference to agency action, at least in certain areas, such as determining their own jurisdictions and interpreting their own regulations. The panel will consider the extent to which the new skepticism toward Chevron in particular and judicial deference to agencies in general is justified. -- This panel took place during the 18th Annual Faculty Conference at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in New York, NY on January 8, 2016. -- Welcome: Dean Blake D. Morant, President, Association of American Law Schools & Dean and Robert Kramer Research Professor of Law, George Washington University Law School and Dean Kellye Y. Lloyd Kaufman (born December 30, 1945) is a New York-born film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor and all around mensch. With producer Michael Herz, "Uncle Lloyd" as he's affectionately known, is the co-founder of the amazing Troma Entertainment film studio, and the director of many of their feature films, including Terror Firmer, Class of Nuke 'em High, The Toxic Avenger and Tromeo and Juliet. If you haven't checked out any of these, you owe it to yourself to do so. Lloyd Kaufman is the author of All I Needed To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger (with James Gunn), Make Your Own Damn Movie (with Adam Jahnke and Trent Haaga) and The Toxic Avenger: The Novel (with Adam Jahnke). He was kind enough to write the excellent foreword for our book, Death by Umbrella! The 100 Weirdest Horror Movie Weapons. On this episode Jeff K, co-host of the Really Awful Movies Podcast, got a chance to chat with Lloyd, a guy he's known for quite a while. They cover quite a bit of bit of ground in this interview. The Troma co-founder talks about the Sony scandal, Troma fans, the state of the movie, industry, Joey Ramone, Troma studios, tattoos, The Toxic Avenger and of course, soul-sucking devil-worshiping mega media conglomerates!!!
