On this episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with legendary glam metal frontman of Hanoi Rocks – Michael Monroe! The two start by getting into Michael's return to America after several years away, comparing the old to the new NYC, and Northeast music icons like Bruce Springsteen and Joey Ramone. They explore Michael and Hanoi Rocks' various musical influences, including Black Sabbath, Little Richard, Elvis, and Stiv Bators. Michael reflects on his upbringing in Sweden, from living on the streets and surviving to the early days of the band and their early glam looks and expression. He also spills the lowdown on pivotal interactions within his career, including asking Prince to produce the band, producing with Bob Ezrin, and making peace with Vince Neil. To close, Michael talks about the band's last gig and lists his top 5 records everyone should own. By 1985, Motley Crue were in a tough place. Though they'd achieved success, wealth and worldwide fame thanks to their first 2 albums Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil, the band were suffering from some setbacks. Vince Neil had driven his Ferrari while drinking and caused a crash that ended up killing his friend Razzle Dingley of Hanoi Rocks. As he worked to stay sober and navigate his legal issues, Nikki Sixx was deep into a heroin addiction that forced producer Tom Werman to get someone else in to rerecord his bass parts. But Shout At The Devil went 4x platinum and the record company needed a follow up to keep the band's momentum alive and in the public eye. The result was Theater of Pain, an album the band in later years has said was too polished and they blamed Tom Werman (not their own substance issues or limits as musicians) for the end product. However, it resonated with the public and sold another 4 million copies thanks to the big radio hits and MTV videos Smokin In The Boys Room (a Brownsville Station cover) and power ballad Home Sweet Home. Theater of Pain is less raunchy than Shout At The Devil, a byproduct of the slick production. We felt the riffs weren't as killer as they had been and outside of the big hits their aren't too many standouts. Louder Than Hell is a heavy song more akin to Black Sabbath than typical Motley but was from the Shout At The Devil sessions and doesn't sound like anything else on TOP. Use It Or Lose It might feature Mick Mars best solo shredding effort with typical cliche lyrics. But the songs had the Motley Crue attitude, had a couple of radio friendly hits and they toured for 8 months around the world to propel sales and keep themselves in the public eye. It may not be our favorite Crue record but it's the one that got our attention back in 1985 and we give it our track x track review at 40. That year could be argued to be the year that really kick started "hair" metal. And Motley Crue's "Theatre of Pain" was leading the pack. Gone were the studs and satanic imagery replaced by the pink scarves and hairspray. Nikki Sixx was leaning into his palm rock influences while sound wise a few tracks would have been right at home on "Shout At The Devil".   This was also a very divisive album. Not just back in the day, but around the RAM offices today. We go through the album track by track and discuss all the going ons when the album hit the tracks.   Musically, we crank Nifelheim, Abbatoir, London (!), Odin (!), Archagathus, Ice War, Breakout, Obnoxious Youth and we introduce Seattle's Hyperstrike in our "Indie Spotlight".   Horns Up!

What the Riff?!?
1989 - September: Mötley Crüe "Dr. Feelgood"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 18, 2024 44:42

It is a little surprising that we have gotten this far into the podcast without featuring an album by Mötley Crüe.  This is a group that practically defined the hair metal genre of the mid to late-80's.  The band formed in 1981 in Hollywood, and featured both a party-oriented lifestyle and an androgynous look.  The core and classic members of the band were Nikki Sixx on bass and keyboards, Mick Mars on lead guitar and backing vocals, Tommy Lee on drums and backing vocals, and Vince Neil as front man.  Many other musicians would be brought in for sessions, and the group itself would change personnel over the years.  However, the classic lineup was still in place for their fifth studio album, Dr. Feelgood.  At the time, the group was facing conflicts that caused Producer Bob Rock to have each member record their parts separately.  This was also the first album recorded after the group started a quest to get sober and go through rehab.  Additionally, recording took place in Vancouver, getting the band out of the familiar (and seductive) L.A. scene. The result of these sessions was impressive.  Dr. Feelgood was the groups most successful album to date, and went to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, the only Crüe album to do so.  It was also reviewed positively by critics, receiving the award for "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album of the Year" at the American Music Awards in 1991.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Bruce and brings us this excellent glam metal album of the late 80's for this week's podcast.Dr. FeelgoodThis title track peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Mötley Crüe's most successful single to date.  The song about a drug dealer chronicles the connection between LA Rock and drug use.  It has an infectious funky riff and a more sophisticated production which departs from earlier Mötley Crüe efforts.Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)The softer approach of this power ballad song are betrayed by its adolescent lyrics.  Bassist Nikki Sixx was inspired by a movie line to make this sarcastic song. It's tongue in cheek lyrics and reference to earlier Crüe songs make it a favorite at their live shows.  like fire, don't you ever take my name in vain."Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)This fifth single released from the album tells a comedic story of a boy meeting two girls, and by the end of the song the boy has been passed over while the two girls end up together.  Many of  Mötley Crüe's songs had lighter, humorous lyrics, which contributed to their appeal.Kickstart My HeartDo not play this song when driving through a speed trap!  The song is not about a relationship, but about Nikki Sixx's heroin overdose.  Sixx was clinically dead, requiring the paramedic to inject adrenaline into his heart to get it beating again.  This single reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Welcome Home by Willie Nelson (from the motion picture “Welcome Home”)This film starred Kris Kristofferson as a Vietnam War vet returning to his family after a 20-year absence. STAFF PICKS:New Orleans Is Sinking by the Tragically HipWayne turns to the college rock genre to start off our staff picks.  The Tragically Hip is better known in their native Canada than in the US, but their music is well worth a listen.  This song was recorded in Memphis, and has a delta blues feel, almost rockabilly.  The song was temporarily removed from radio playlists after hurricane Katrina broke the levies and flooded New Orleans.  Wait for You by BonhamIf you think that this song sounds like Led Zeppelin, you aren't the only one.  Rob features Jason Bonham's band.  Jason Bonham was the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham.  Jason Bonham has a playing style very similar to his father, and recruited Daniel McMaster to the band on vocals - a singer with a sound very similar to Zeppelin front man Robert Palmer.  This is the main single from the debut album, "The Disregard of Timekeeping." Poison by Alice CooperLynch brings us a song from Cooper's eighteenth album, "Trash."  This song was a major comeback single for Cooper, his first top 10 single in the US in 12 years.  The song tells the story of a guy entrapped by a girl that he knows is wrong for him, but also someone he can't let go.Down Boys by Warrant Greg finishes the staff picks with another hair metal band.  This is the debut single from Warrant's debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich."  It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Stand On It by Jeff Beck with Terry Bozzio and Tony HymasWe close out with a guitar instrumental from guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck, accompanied by drummer Terry Bozzio and keyboardist Tony Hymas. Gaerea is nearing its 10th anniversary as a band, so the conversation took a bit of an introspective turn as we discuss how they want to continue making art, how they wish they can have the artistic talent of drawing, and how they're being more comfortable with the idea of letting some of the mystique of Gaerea slide so they can connect with fans at live shows. We start with our guest's misspent youth in south-east London, where he frequently saw bands such as Dr. Feelgood and local lads Squeeze and even fronted his own punk combo Simon & the Virgins. We hear about his early days on the standup circuit and his close associations with Vic Reeves, Bob Mortimer and the gang that coalesced around The Fast Show. From there we discuss the genesis of his "prog'n'roll" alter ego Brian Pern and his affectionate lampooning of Peter Gabriel. Clips from a 2003 audio interview with Steely Dan prompt an in-depth conversation about Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker. During this, Simon tells us how he first fell for the arch duo and we collectively compare notes on some of the group's greatest songs and albums. After a brief mention of featured writer Dorian Lynskey and his new book Everything Must Go, Mark quotes from newly-added library pieces about Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and Beatles hairdresser Leslie Cavendish before Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on M. It's time to reconvene in the Bunkerpoon with “Mr. Black, Mr. Dice, and Mr. Shave” as we discuss the first “frontman drummer” in metal as well as which song “should have been track 11 on Reign In Blood”. Behold “the end of Metallica thrash and the most doomy Slayer song ever” and get a “sneak peek” of what our NEXT Death Match is gonna be when you JOIN US for PART 2 of our 1988 HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH between METALLICA's …And Justice For All and SLAYER's South of Heaven.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your Podcasts. On this episode we're joined by Northern California based amateur Photographer, Steve Roney & book Author Scott Davis. Steve & Scott, lifelong friends, are promoting an amazing book titled PICTURES ALIVE: ROCK SHOWS OF THE 80s & BEYOND. The elaborate collection of amazing photos & stories contained in the book taken from concerts in the Bay area during the hey-day of Rock & Metal during the 1980s, is not your typical paint by numbers book, but instead is presented from the perspective & viewpoint of a music fan & enthusiastic concert goer. Steve & Scott were just like the rest of us, Heavy Metal junkies who loved to see their favorite bands, however Steve was THAT guy who snuck his camera into the show & decades later has unearthed these never seen before photos from bands like Van Halen, Kiss, Dio, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Ozzy, Scorpions, Motley Crue and many others. But what makes his collection unique is that the photos are not professional, but still pretty damn good! Heck, who didn't at some point try to sneak in a camera or cassette recorder to a concert! But beyond the pictures are the recaps and stories from the shows, the ticket stubs & concert ads, setlists, the interfaces with the bands themselves & the comradery with his best friends. Ask yourself this: Did you ever catch a guitar pick from Eddie Van Halen or take a joy ride on the hood of Steve Vai's car or witness Nikki Sixx autograph someone's t*ts? Well, Steve did! Another example of a great, unique, conversation filled with in-depth anecdotes and disclosures found only here at Metal Mayhem ROC. Rockshow Episode 187 Motley Crüe Mötley Crüe is a famous American rock band that was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1981. The band's classic lineup consisted of Vince Neil (vocals), Mick Mars (guitar), Nikki Sixx (bass), and Tommy Lee (drums). They gained significant popularity in the 1980s with their glam metal and hard rock music. Some of Mötley Crüe's most well-known songs include “Kickstart My Heart,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” and “Home Sweet Home.” They were known for their outrageous and hedonistic lifestyles, which were chronicled in the book “The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band,” which later inspired a Netflix biographical film of the same name. The band experienced both commercial success and controversy during their career, and they became emblematic of the glam metal era of the 1980s. Over the years, they've gone through various lineup changes and temporary retirements, but Mötley Crüe remains a significant and influential name in the history of rock music. #MötleyCrüe #RockMusic #GlamMetal #80sRock #HardRock #RockLegends #MusicIcons #TheDirt #RockConcert #1980sRock#HeavyMetal #Hairband @MötleyCrüe @hairbands @80sRock https://www.motley.com/ Facebookhttps://m.facebook.com › MotleyCrueMötley Crüe https://instagram.com/motleycrue?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== https://youtube.com/@motleycrue?si=93lfV030ONuueU-m https://spotify.link/I4604VkeaEb https://x.com/motleycrue?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup
