Movie of the Year: 2006Slither The Slither Podcast Brings Body Horror to the 2006 BracketThe Slither podcast episode unleashes the first true horror movie on our Movie of the Year 2006 bracket. After opening the season with Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, the Taste Buds trade metafiction for meteorites. Consequently, things get slimy fast. Ryan, Mike, and Greg welcome producer and festival programmer Drea Clark to dig into James Gunn's gleefully gross directorial debut. Together, the panel asks whether a movie full of alien slugs deserves a deep run in the bracket. Above all, they ask whether Slither has more on its mind than exploding deer and tentacled husbands.About the FilmSlither is a 2006 science fiction horror comedy written and directed by James Gunn. A meteorite crashes outside the small town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, carrying an alien parasite. The parasite infects wealthy local Grant Grant, played with squirming brilliance by Michael Rooker. Soon, Grant transforms into a tentacled monster, and slug-like creatures spread through the town. Meanwhile, police chief Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) and Grant's wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks) try to stop the invasion.Universal released the film on March 31, 2006. Notably, it flopped at the box office, grossing under $13 million against a $15 million budget. However, critics largely embraced it. Roger Ebert praised its Troma-loving spirit in his RogerEbert.com review, and the film became a cult favorite on home video. In addition, it launched the directing career that eventually gave us Guardians of the Galaxy and the new DC Universe.Guest Panelist: Drea ClarkThis week the Taste Buds welcome Drea Clark, a true film industry polymath. Drea co-hosts Maximum Film! on the Maximum Fun network, the long-running movie podcast she shares with film critic Alonso Duralde. Furthermore, her credentials behind the scenes run deep. She has served on the Sundance Film Festival programming team, led narrative feature programming at Slamdance for over a decade, spent ten years with the LA Film Festival, and curated Geena Davis's Bentonville Film Festival. As a producer, her features include The Last Time You Had Fun, Lake Los Angeles, and No Light and No Land Anywhere, the latter executive produced by Miranda July. In short, few guests are better equipped to judge a scrappy genre debut from a first time director.James Gunn as a First-Time FilmmakerBefore Slither, James Gunn was a writer with a strange resume. He cut his teeth at Troma on Tromeo and Juliet, then wrote the live action Scooby-Doo movies and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake. Consequently, Slither arrived as his first chance to direct his own material. The panel debates what the film reveals about Gunn as a filmmaker. Specifically, they trace the DNA that later shows up in Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Superman. The needle drops, the found family of misfits, and the sincere heart under the gross-out gags all start here. Moreover, Drea brings a programmer's eye to the question of how debut features signal a career to come.Sex and Violence on the Slither 2006 PodcastSlither earns its R rating with enthusiasm. The Taste Buds tackle how the film weaponizes both sex and violence, often in the same scene. Grant's infection plays like a grotesque infidelity story, and the alien's reproductive plans push body horror into genuinely uncomfortable territory. However, the violence stays cartoonish enough to keep the comedy alive. The panel asks where Gunn draws that line, and whether the bathtub scene, the barn scene, and that infamous bursting body still shock today. Ultimately, the conversation lands on a bigger question. Does the film use its excess for a purpose, or is the excess the point? Is Slither an Allegory?Every great monster movie smuggles in a meaning, or so the theory goes. Therefore, the panel puts Slither on the couch. Is the film an allegory for toxic marriage, with Grant's transformation literalizing a controlling husband? Is it about small town conformity, as a hive mind absorbs an entire community? By contrast, maybe Gunn simply loves slugs and explosions, and the search for subtext misses the joke. Drea, Ryan, Mike, and Greg each stake out a position. Nevertheless, the debate keeps circling back to Starla, whose arc gives the film its surprising emotional weight.TriviaNo Movie of the Year episode is complete without Trivia. This week's round digs into Slither's production and its B-movie family tree. Expect questions about the practical effects, the casting, and the film's connections to Troma legend Lloyd Kaufman, who cameos in the movie. Additionally, the segment tests whether the panel can untangle Slither from the movies it lovingly rips off, including Night of the Creeps and Shivers. Play along and see if you can outscore the Taste Buds.Dream Blunt RotationNew season, new games. In Dream Blunt Rotation, the panel assembles the ultimate smoke circle from the world of Slither. Which characters make the cut, and which get left outside the garage? Mayor Jack MacReady seems like a chaotic invite, while Bill Pardy might be the chillest hang in Wheelsy. Meanwhile, the conversation drifts toward the cast and crew themselves. Listen to find out who earns a spot in the rotation and whose vibes get vetoed.Awards and RecommendationsThe episode closes with Awards and Recommendations, the segment where the Taste Buds hand out honors to the film's cast, crew, and creatures. Nominees this week range from Michael Rooker's fearless physical performance to the effects team behind the slugs. As a result, expect passionate cases and at least one baffling pick. The winners stay a surprise, so you will have to listen for the results. Afterward, the panel shares recommendations for what to watch next if Slither leaves you hungry for more horror comedy. Why Slither Still MattersTwenty years later, Slither looks like a turning point hiding in plain sight. It kept practical creature effects alive at a moment when Hollywood was abandoning them. Furthermore, it proved that horror comedy could carry real emotion, a balance Gunn has chased ever since. The film's box office failure also tells a story about 2006 itself, a year when audiences ignored a future superstar director. In practice, the Slither podcast episode asks the question this whole season exists to answer. Does cult status and influence make a movie a contender for the best film of 2006? Listen and judge for yourself.Related Episodes from Movie of the Year: 2006Movie of the Year: 2006 — Intro, Part 1Movies of 2006: The Bracket RevealTristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull StoryAll Movie of the Year episodesFAQ: Slither Podcast and FilmWhat is this episode of the Slither podcast about?Ryan, Mike, and Greg debate whether James Gunn's Slither deserves to advance in the Movie of the Year 2006 bracket. In 2025, New Jersey's favorite hideously deformed creature of superhuman size and strength returned — twice. Writer/director Macon Blair's big-budget reimagining, The Toxic Avenger (2023), finally received a wide theatrical release in August 2025. Peter Dinklage voices Winston, a terminally ill janitor at a corrupt pharmaceutical company who falls into a vat of toxic chemicals and emerges as Toxie — a mop-wielding mutant vigilante. Kevin Bacon stars as the company's scheming CEO and Elijah Wood as his security-minded brother, in a film that wraps its splatter comedy around themes of healthcare, corporate greed, and unlikely heroism. Also in 2025, Troma's own Andrew L. Miller and Adam Peltier reconstructed The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989) and Part III (1989) into the single film they were always meant to be. Titled Mr. Melvin, the 127-minute cut restores the narrative logic Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz originally intended — following Toxie's post-heroic depression, a manipulated journey to Japan, and a Faustian deal with Apocalypse Inc. that turns him into a corporate sellout before the ultimate confrontation with the Devil himself.Mike talks with Rob St. Mary about both films, and the episode includes interviews with Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman and Mr. Melvin co-producer and co-editor Andrew L. Filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman railed against Hollywood his whole career as the founder of cult B-movie production house, Troma, while his daughter Lily-Hayes dreamt only of fitting in. Lloyd Kaufman has been the father of anti-establishment filmmaking for over 50 years. His production company Troma Entertainment is known for its gory, controversial and politically-charged movies. His daughter Lily-Hayes grew up on the sets of these bizarre and often quite gruesome Troma films, such as Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. She had her first on-screen role at the age of 4 in one of Troma's biggest hits – the 1984 horror-comedy The Toxic Avenger – a film about a nerd who turns into a mutant superhero after falling into a vat of nuclear waste. But the chaos of the films was not mirrored at home in New York; Lily-Hayes and her sisters went to an Upper East Side all-girls private school, sweets were strictly rationed, and life was kept in order. When it came time for Lily-Hayes to pick her own career path, she wanted to push back against her father's anti-establishment line of work. But how could she rebel against the ultimate rebel? Well, she went into investment banking and forged a ‘normal' life on the trading floor. One day she witnessed a colleague take part in a chicken nugget eating contest. It was a sight that would rival even the grossest scenes she'd witnessed on a Troma set and it pushed her back towards the call of the Tromaverse.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producer: Andrea RangecroftLives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world. On Sunday, March 1, I attended LSF Fest V at the Farr Best Theatre in Mansfield, TX. LSF stands for Litte Spark Films, a production studio based out of Arlington, co-founded by husband-wife duo Joe Manco & Catalina Querida in 2013.From music videos to 48-hour-shorts submissions, fake trailers for Texas Frightmare Weekend (including one starring Troma King Lloyd Kaufman) and much more, Little Spark Films has built a reputation in the DFW metroplex as a community-centered studio making irreverent, scrappy horror flicks with mischeivous grins and buckets of blood.Last month, LSF announced, after receiving a million-dollar investment from now-CFO Chris Rushing, their plans for expansion into a full-fledged genre studio, including a film slate, new executive team members and collaborations with outside productions as co-producers.LSF Fest V was their victory lap, a party celebrating the studio's past, showcasing recent works of friends and previous collaborators, alongside a few glimpses into what the future holds.Walking around the century-old theater, I got the sense like I was the new boyfriend at a family reunion. The LSF cabal, specifically, the crew from last year's short DEATH WORLD, showed up to support: actress and key makeup artist Tori Yeager, key makeup artist Regan Schenck, lead actor and cowriter Cory Ahre, sound recordist Cameron Hazelwood. If I'm the new boyfriend, this analogy suggests my date is Jacob Harper, fellow entertainment journalist contributing to 1428 Elm and his own podcast Talkin' Terror . We met outside the theater, started chatting and inevitably I learn he was a set decorator on DEATH WORLD. All roads lead back to Little Spark Films.LSF's social media presence includes a daily filmmaking tip, everything from respecting one's fellow man to ensuring your legal documentation is on-point. Their YouTube channel also features a guide on building one's own production bible. Judging from these posts and the wealth of repeat collaborators in LSF's circle, I get the impression these folks live in an abundance mindset, sharing whatever knowledge and resources (minus Lloyd Kaufman books, because y'know, you lend people books, you never get that shit back) they can.Schenck's short, SHADOWS AT THE ALTAR, played at LSF Fest V, along with Travis Patten's HAHTINU, which was co-produced by Hazelwood's company Pensive Pictures. LSF's future slate includes directorial efforts from Hazelwood and Ahre. Chief creative officer Preston Fassel has two scripts in production. It seems like the studio invests in the growth of their friends, building a community, not just a film library. If LSF Fest V was anything to go by, I think they've made good on that effort.---A BEN EVANS FILM dir. James Henry Hall & Bret K. Hall - a man makes a film starring his recently deceased parents. Love conquers all this week when Cooper and Nolan tell the story of TROMEO & JULIET! This Troma-riffic take on The Bard's classic tale of star-crossed lovers features all the body piercing, kinky sex, and dismemberment you'd expect from a Lloyd Kaufman film, but what you might NOT expect is how close it actually is to the original. Despite being absolutely gobsmacked by what they're seeing, the guys still manage to make it a Valentine's Day to remember, with arguments about dating vegetarians, the relationship between body hair and creepiness, and whether or not raisins belong in any other food. No need to bring flowers or candy; this episode (featuring not one but TWO beers from the Shakespeare Brewing Company) is here and it's ready for love!

His experience proves that success in Hollywood isn't about overnight breakthroughs, but about loving the process and staying in the game long enough for opportunity to find you.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
To celebrate the 80th birthday of our first and definitely one of our favorite guests, the one and only Lloyd Kaufman! Lloyd and I talk about everything from Oliver Stone's politics to a golden encounter with Lawrence Tierney (After it takes us an embarrassingly long time to come up with his name. Thanks, Producer Jason!) There are also tales of Candy Darling, Auteur Theory, and mentions of melon-heavy breasts. We talk about how Troma came to be, former New York Film Commissioner, Pat Kaufman drops in, our old Producer, Jason crawls up from between my legs to say hello, and Lloyd pontificates on VHS marketing, Making Your Own Damn Movie, and how fast food causes property damage. Happy Birthday, Uncle Lloyd!!! Find more of Lloyd at http://watch.troma.com/ and be sure to follow him on Instagram @unclelloydkaufman.

This week we celebrate the warriors of post classic Hollywood B films who celebrated and reveled in their chosen field just in time for Americans to glut themselves on turkey and gravy. Park Plaza Mall has just installed the newest high tech in security, a trio of security robots designed to subdue and apprehend thieves and trespassers, and impenetrable steel doors across all exits. The same night they are implemented, Allison, a pizzeria waitress, and nerdy Ferdy are both talked into attending an after hours party in the mall's furniture store. Tragically, something goes terribly wrong before the last frolicking retail employees can lock up for the night. A cult favorite that might be about excesses of consumerism and the extreme paranoia of security focused capitalist societies OR might just be another excuse for Jim Wynorski to hang out with young blondes- Chopping Mall. One night some workers discover a tasty creamy substance bubbling out of the ground at a Georgia quarry. Soon it is on every store shelf in America and there are multiple tubs in every home. A zero calorie addictive treat that is so good you won't even care you've turned into an alien zombie. Independent maverick auteur Larry Cohen's directly confrontational satire of consumerism, mass media, and the health food industry, with a great performance from his one true muse, Michael Moriarty. Enough is never enough of... The Stuff. Former sweethearts Wendy, whose one semester at college has let her explore her inner radical antiestablishment lesbian, and Arbie, who stayed behind to take care of his parents, find themselves in opposition when a fast food chicken restaurant paves over Tromaville's Native American burial ground. In a fit of jealousy, after seeing Wendy protesting with her girlfriend Micki, Arbie takes a job working the greasy fried register. Before long both the misfit employees and the protesters outside begin dying and undead feathers start flying. Lloyd Kaufman's black comedy horror musical, made entirely by volunteers from all over the world and using donated props from just as many far flung studios and TOTALLY NOT another satire of consumerism, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. Australian super stunt man, Grant Page, takes a job working for an American television series and moves to LA. Once there he reunites with his cousin, a member of the band Sorcery, a rock band with fantasy theatrical stage shows. Refusing to rest after Grant is injured on his very first stunt, his dedication to his craft draws the attention of both the show's lead actress, Monique van de Ven, but also journalist Lois. Together the threesome attend a lot of Sorcery concerts, attend lavish Hollywood parties with the band, and occasionally meditate on the joys of extreme living. Brian Trenchard-Smith's attempt to make Page a world class action star and Sorcery something more than an 8th rate Alice Cooper clone, Stunt Rock. All that and Dave questions all his life choices up to this moment, Tyler begins to spontaneously cry at the sight of Eggos, Kevin finishes his naughty and naughtier list, and Craig finally opens a stack of blu-rays he was keeping to use as currency once the global AI bubble bursts and drowns us all. Join us, won't you? Episode 441- B ALL YOU CAN B

The gang take a tour of Tromaville this week as they review the cult classic anti-super hero movie, The Toxic Avenger. Spawning 2 sequels and a 2025 remake starring Elijah Wood and Peter Dinklage, the zero to hero story seems to capture the hearts of those who can see past the gross-out antics in the film. With explicit body gore and indiscriminate violence, many audiences pass on Toxie, but to those who appreciate those things, it's a B movie classic!Visit the YouTube channel Saturdays @ 12:30 PM Pacific to get in on the live stream, or just watch this episode rather than just listen!Channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI1lVsk1xjMSBgZK82uAzgQThis Episode:https://youtu.be/-EW1nMAs5fchttp://www.MCFCpodcast.comhttps://www.twitch.tv/MCFCpodcasthttp://www.facebook.com/MCFCpodcasthttp://www.twitter.com/podcastMCFChttp://www.tiktok.com/middleclassfilmclasshttp://www.instagram.com/middleclassfilmclass Email: MCFCpodcast@gmail.comMerch store - https://middle-class-film-class.creator-spring.com/ Join the Patreon:www.patreon.con/middleclassfilmclass Patrons:JavierJoel ShinnemanLinda McCalisterHeather Sachs https://twitter.com/DorkOfAllDorksChris GeigerDylanMitch Burns Robert Stewart JasonAndrew Martin Dallas Terry Jack Fitzpatrick Mackenzie MinerAngry Otter (Michael)Joseph Navarro Pete Abeyta and Tyler Noe
¡Viva Toxie! Ben and Rob dive into The Toxic Avenger (1984), the gloriously trashy horror-comedy that turned an ordinary nerdy janitor into a mop-wielding mutant hero. Created by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, The Toxic Avenger is the ultimate mix of DIY guts, anarchic satire, and midnight-movie magic; the kind of cult classic that's still shocking and oddly sweet nearly four decades later. Trace the Toxic Avenger's wild journey from VHS obscurity to pop-culture demon with us, through action figures, cartoons, comic books, and midnight screenings. How has The Toxic Avenger aged in 2025—does it still hit like a body-slam of absurdity, or feel like a dangerously dated dated relic? This week, we're joined by comedian Blake Trevino for a wild ride into the world of Troma. Our main feature is the gonzo, gleefully gross 2023 reboot of The Toxic Avenger, followed by a dive back into Troma history with the chaotic cult classic Troma's War (1988). Along the way, we toast with a perfect thematic pairing: first, a return to Drekker Brewing's Ectogasm—because when the can art looks like it crawled straight out of a Tromaville sewer, you can't pass it up. Then, we cool off with a crisp Krauss Czech Pilsner from Galveston Bay Brewing, our second visit to Galveston Bay. Plenty of Troma talk—schlock, satire, slime, and the surprising staying power of Lloyd Kaufman's DIY empire.

Writer, director, producer, and actor Macon Blair joins us this week to talk about his fascinating career, and his bold new take on a cult classic: the unrated remake of The Toxic Avenger (in theaters August 29).You've seen Macon on screen in films like Blue Ruin, Green Room, Thunder Road, and even Oppenheimer. He also won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize with his directorial debut I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, starring Melanie Lynskey and Elijah Wood. Now, he's back with a gooey genre shift...reimagining Lloyd Kaufman's radioactive hero for a new generation while honoring the messy, subversive spirit of Troma. We dig into Macon's creative path from Murder Party with Jeremy Saulnier all the way to working with Elijah Wood and Peter Dinklage on this bonkers new Toxie. Along the way, we talk about practical effects (yes, intestines are involved), absurd kills that didn't make the cut, the challenges of redesigning an iconic monster, and why The Toxic Avenger might actually be the perfect antidote to the Marvel-ification of movies.and of course we ask the important question… when can we expect 2oxic 2venger: Toxie vs Dracula vs the Unicorn's Horn in Space? If you love cult cinema, superhero parodies, or just a good old fashioned over the top practical effect, you don't want to miss this conversation sooo...Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage (all socials)Sean: @hypocrite.ink (IG/TikTok), @hypocriteink (Twitter/X)Enjoyed this episode? When two Daves walk into a podcast, you don't expect to stumble upon a meditation on art, failure, persistence, and horror-comedy. But that's exactly what happened in this electric and delightfully unfiltered conversation with Dave Campfield, a filmmaker, actor, and host of the Troma Now Podcast, best known for his work in the cult Caesar and Otto comedy-horror film series.Dave Campfield is a fiercely independent filmmaker whose journey from a now-defunct film college in New Mexico to directing his own cult horror satires has been a long and winding road paved with hustle, humor, and horror. We start in the sand-colored surrealism of Santa Fe, where adobe buildings and the ghost of City Slickers set the stage for Dave's early filmmaking dreams. In the land of tumbleweeds and tumble-down gym studios turned sound stages, Dave cut his teeth not just on film but on the art of adaptation. The college no longer exists, but the memories—like chalk lines under studio lights—remain vivid in his story. “It was like going to school on Tatooine,” he says, laughing, but behind that joke is a bittersweet nod to the ephemeral. From there, Dave walks us through the illusion of success—early meetings with Universal and New Line Cinema where hopes were dangled like carrots in front of eager young dreamers. The industry, he quickly learned, speaks its own coded language: familiarity, marketability, and sometimes, plain deception. One mentor told him to “say you're young, from the streets, and have a dark comedy,” regardless of truth. Dave gave it a shot but came away with the haunting realization that "they were intrigued enough to keep me on leash, but not enough to make it happen."That experience seeded his first real film, “Dark Chamber,” a mystery-horror project which deliberately bucked slasher formulas. It took five years to make—five years of blood, sweat, and overdrafts. And yet, when the studios responded with, “We wanted something more familiar,” Dave knew he was swimming upstream. Still, he sold the film to a small distributor, endured its repackaging as something it wasn't, and got it onto Netflix. A win—just not the one he envisioned. But here's the heart of it all: Dave didn't stop. He pivoted, not with bitterness, but with evolution. “I decided I wasn't going to be one of those people waiting for opportunity. You had to make it happen on your own.” And so, he leaned into comedy horror—a genre he describes as “Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, but for the splatter generation.” Thus, Caesar and Otto were born: two absurdly lovable doofuses bumbling their way through massacres, monsters, and paranormal mayhem. One of Dave's secret weapons is loyalty to what's real. Whether recounting how Lloyd Kaufman forgot him (then remembered) or editing commercials for the Philadelphia Pet Expo, he keeps a kind of grounded magic about his craft. He shares a deeply personal new project, “Awaken the Reaper,” born from a decade of introspection and struggle, calling it “the most personal thing I've ever written.” He says, “It's about being stuck—feeling like every day you're not moving forward—and finally getting out of your own way.”All along, Dave's been quietly building a reputation for casting future stars before they break—Trey Byers (Empire), Peter Scanavino (Law & Order)—and hosting a podcast that thrives not just because of brand synergy with Troma, but because he genuinely knows how to talk to people. “They've never rejected an episode,” he remarks. “I tease Troma a lot, and they're always game. It's a beautiful collaboration.”The conversation wraps not with grandiosity, but a recognition that even the smallest cult followings can keep a creator going. “My fanbase is small, but intense,” Dave says with pride. “I can rattle them off on two hands.” Maybe that's enough. Maybe that's everything.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.
