This episode is sponsored by smartwater®Ruth E. Carter is a trailblazing costume designer known for her work on Malcolm X, the Black Panther films, Sinners, and so many more iconic works. She has been awarded Academy Awards, a BAFTA, a Critics Choice Award, the Costume Designers Guild Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But before that, she was exploring Black literature and history in Black Studies-focused enrichment programs in her home state of Massachusetts. When she was a young adult, she was deconstructing clothing and taking notes from grunge scenes, citing Lisa Bonet and Madonna as early beauty and style inspiration. In our conversation, Ruth walks us through her life and career, explaining how the girl who dressed like a grunge artist would introduce Afrofuturism to the world. During our chat, Ruth tells us about how she has always drawn on her interest in literary, dramatic, and visual arts to design on film sets. She shared the initial culture shock she experienced at her HBCU, Hampton, and how the theater department helped her blend her artistic sensibilities with the coiffed presentation of her classmates. Ruth detailed how she drew on these experiences in her first position in School Daze, and how her dedication led to the first of many creative collaborations with directors like Spike Lee, which would shape her career. Our conversation ranges from the specific way she employs the lessons her psychologist mother taught her, like gaining and keeping people's trust, to spending time with Tina Turner. We discussed so much of her portfolio, and what compelled her to begin archiving her designs, which now make up the traveling exhibition “Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design.” Ruth is open about her painstakingly detailed commitment to historical accuracy and how her early exposure to ideas about the future being a site of freedom and exploration shaped the visual identity for Black Panther. Based on Lady Antonia Fraser's 2001 biography and directed by Sofia Coppola, the 2006 Oscar-winning movie Marie Antoinette portrays the queen in a way you might not expect, making her a relatable person, a teenager who becomes a leader, coping with life's ups and downs all while trying to have some fun too. The stylistic flair and visual embellishments (watch for a pair of Converse sneakers) make plenty of scenes feel like a dessert tray thanks to the friendly, sweet color choices and Milena Canonero's work which won a 2007 Oscar for Best Achievement in Costume Design. Designer Sofia Cababa Wood has always loved the movie and as a teenager reenacted moments while visiting France, it's a movie the Seattle-based product designer at eBay definitely watches once a year.-Sofia Cababa Wood is a Seattle-based product designer at eBay. In this episode of The Truth In This Art, the guest is Douriean Fletcher!About Douriean Fletcher: An acclaimed jewelry designer and artisan whose work bridges adornment and storytelling. She was the specialty jeweler for Marvel's Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and became the first jewelry artist to be part of an Academy Award–winning costume design team—an honor she achieved twice. Douriean has expanded into spacial adornment art, creating large-scale installations and immersive environments. In our conversation, Douriean Fletcher discusses her exhibition, Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture, at the Walters Art Museum and how a ring in the museum's collection became a touchstone for the show. Years ago, she found an ancient Egyptian brass and red jasper ring online—covered in hieroglyphics and telling a story of religious belief, culture, and tradition. She saved the image, not knowing it belonged to the Walters. When putting together the exhibition, she showed the curator that same image—and found out it was part of the museum's collection all along.Fletcher also talks about the parallels between her pieces and objects in the Walters' collection, including a sculpture of Isis and Horus that reminded her of the Dogon sculptures she referenced in the Ramonda dress for Wakanda Forever. She discusses her move from wearable jewelry to larger spacial adornment that transforms gallery spaces.Be sure to check out Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture at the Walters Art Museum — https://thewalters.org/exhibitions/douriean-fletcher/Photo courtesy of subject. Hello!" - our saddened and deflated co-host turned to his best friend for comfort and inspiration. No, not Paul. Geoff's best buddy it seems is Al Dewar, Creative Director at Character Options. And one windy night around 3am, whilst playing adventures with his new line-up of top secret Doctor Who figures, Al received a call from sad Geoff entreating him to help rediscover the love he once had for Doctor Who. "Geoff," said Al, deftly moving a prototype [REDACTED] across the tabletop towards a freshly sculpted [REDACTED] to get a better look at the new [REDACTED] figure. "Get a grip. Jodie's gone. However, what about these suggestions for podcast topics..." Several hours later a newly invigorated Geoff texted Paul to say "We're doing our Favourite Doctor and their Costumes!" "Cool" said Paul. Costume design defines character before a word is spoken — through silhouette, texture, and the quiet language of fabric. For Episode 10 of Below the Line's 2026 Oscar series, Skid is joined by Liz Vastola, Austin Wittick, and Allison Choi Braun to examine the nominees for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design at the 98th Academy Awards. Drawing on their experience across period drama, contemporary storytelling, and large-scale production, the panel evaluates this year's field with a focus on research, construction, collaboration, and narrative clarity. As with the rest of this year's Oscar series, the conversation is available both as an audio podcast and as a full video episode on YouTube. Our discussion explores: The physical craftsmanship behind Avatar: Fire and Ash, and how tangible garments support performance even in a digitally expansive world In Frankenstein, how heightened color and silhouette push beyond strict period realism to create something emotionally immediate How Hamnet uses restraint — muted palettes and softened textures — to support its interior storytelling The meticulous 1950s tailoring in Marty Supreme, and what period specificity reveals about character and class Blending Americana, music culture, and horror in Sinners, where aging, multiples, and continuity become storytelling tools The collaborative relationship between costume designers and directors, and how early visual conversations shape the entire production Throughout the episode, the panel reflects on how costume design operates at every scale — from the smallest accessory to the broadest color arc — and how these choices work in concert with lighting, production design, performance, and theme.

To be fair, my interview with Miyako was before Marty came to our screens…. you've seen in previous posts my excuse for the dog eating my homework; I've been producing a film in Philadelphia and the timing is less than stellar. I was also waiting to speak to Mike Fontaine and Kyra Panchenko about their makeup work on Marty which has since been recognized by BAFTA, but Kyra is insanely busy and our schedules did not align. So I am finally releasing my talk with Miyako mostly for bragging rights that I, too was granted the honor of having this superstar on the show.Miyako Bellizzi is THAT GIRL that you want to friends with. She is impossibly cool and effortlessly chic, and above all, spectacularly talented. Josh Safdi's Marty Supreme is without a doubt a polarizing film, but the one fact that is undisputed is it looked flawless. The authenticity, detail, and style are deserving of their Academy Award Nominations and we all knew from the moment this film was released that Bellizzi would be among those craftspeople who were recognized during awards season. I spoke to Miyako early in the film's release so we talked about the press tour a lot. I am not ashamed to admit that I have all the Marty Merch including the Wheaties Box. So while you may have seen this beautiful woman and her extraordinary work in this film featured everywhere from Vogue to Vanity Fair, we had a great time speaking off the cuff about the excitement of the cultural influence of an A24 press tour. William Sarradet speaks with Mallory Prucha, Associate Professor of Costume Design at Texas Tech University, about garment design, textiles, and teaching in the Texas Panhandle. “Right now the American theater is trying to figure out what it's doing, but in the process…we're seeing experimentation. Oftentimes, I'll expand my students' horizons to think about things like working at Meow Wolf, that's very theatrically adjacent… or you can think about experiential design… within these times of identity uncertainty of an industry, there is the opportunity to push the limits and boundaries.” See related readings here: https://glasstire.com/2025/11/02/art-dirt-talking-costume-design-collaboration-with-mallory-prucha If you enjoy Glasstire and would like to support our work, please consider donating.
