The Port City Plate Podcast presented by Bienville Bites Food Tour. The Port City Plate is a podcast featuring the food, history, and people of Mobile, Alabama and on today's episode we nailed all three with Joycelyn Davis! The Clotilda was the last known slave ship to enter U.S. soil in 1860, over 50 years after the slave trade had been abolished. The descendants of that ship still reside just north of Mobile in a community called, Africatown. Joycelyn Davis is the organizer of the "Spirit of our Ancestors Festival", a member of the Clotilda Descendants Association and has become the face of Africatown and the Clotilda Descendants. Joycelyn has been featured prominently in the Netflix documentary, Descendant. She has been featured in a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper, and she just returned from a trip to London where a screening of Descendant was showing at the historic Ritzy Cinema. We talk to Joycelyn about Africatown, the Clotilda, her descendants- Charlie and Maggie Lewis, growing up in Africatown, the future and tourism opportunities in Africatown and her conversation with former president, Barack Obama! We also talked food (GUMBO!), and get Joycelyn's thoughts on how a southern girl eats when she is traveling the world. Thanks for listening to the Port City Plate Podcast. In the latest episode the crew chat to the mighty Clare Binns (Joint Managing Director of Picturehouse Cinemas) about her early days at Ritzy Cinema, where her love of film began, the impact of Covid on the industry and what she gets up to day to day as MD. Mercer takes a dive into the film headlines including 'Raya And The Last Dragon's' moderate Box Office Success, the 2021 Oscar nominations and Cineworld's new deal with Warner Bros. As is customary, two new films get the guys critical judgement 'Coming 2 America' and 'The White Tiger'. Finally, the team pick their fave 'rags-to-riches' movies and decide which franchise films are the ones which 'jump the shark'. **PLEASE NOTE** Clare Binns had to jump off the pod half-way through so unfortunately the gang didn't get her take on the films in review or the 'in-scene' questions. Joining Isaac and Omar for the first episode of 2019 is their close (Taint) friend Ayshe, a solid member of their squad and someone with strong opinions, morals and values. Ayshe also brings bags of smiles, seriousness, sweetness and soul to any situation and when she joined them on the sofa she brought a film, which has that in spades. Her choice was the best foreign language film of 2004, the Oscar and Bafta winning epic, The Motorcycle Diaries. So with a “new year same me” mentality they shook off the festive cobwebs and went on a road trip of self reflection and discovery, which mirrored that of the film’s protagonists. This episode also features another crafty bout of the film connection game as well as an awesome tale about Omar’s New Years Eve party. It also contains two FUAQ first mentions (but probably not the last) about Isaac’s deep love for The Incredibles and Omar’s legendary Mini 1275GT. So if you’ve already failed your resolutions then this episode will fill you with the strength to either remain on that course, start again or stay strong. You will need a game of Jenga, marker pens and imagination. Step 1. Divide the blocks equally between your players. Step 2. Everyone takes a marker pen. Step 3. They then write a dare/would you rather/question/either or…on one side of the block. Step 4. They then repeat this on the other side. Step 5. Repeat until everyone has completed all of their blocks. Step 6. Now play the game as normal except - when a block is removed the player must read both sides to themselves. They must not reveal it to the other players. Step 7. They then choose one side to answer/complete. Step 8. They then nominate a player of their choice to answer/complete the other side of the block. Step 9. HAVE FUN! BE CREATIVE! This episode is about how families create myths, how memories of events contradict, change and fade, how families interact and how the idea of a parent’s mortality can shape your life.
