Many women executives wonder what it's like to leave the corporate workplace and start your own company. The Brand is Female Host Eva Hartling went through this when launching her company after spending almost two decades in the corporate world. This is also an experience her guest in this episode is familiar with. With a marketing background that spans almost 20 years at global organizations like Western Union and KPMG; Joycelyn David took a leap of faith when she decided to take over AVC, a communications agency based in Toronto. Becoming the leader of an existing business had its surprises, including horrible Glassdoor reviews. Joycelyn learned quickly that it would be up to her to implement changes that would positively impact the company's culture. A daughter of immigrant parents from the Philippines, Joycelyn David understands the hopes and struggles of newcomers and is proud to engage with and help bring multicultural communities together. Her agency's exceptional performance demonstrates how her hard work has paid off. This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. In today's episode I'm chatting with Joycelyn Longdon, a PhD researcher at Cambridge University and the founder of Climate in Colour, an education platform dedicated to making climate conversations more accessible and diverse for the climate curious.Joycelyn works at the intersection of technology, ecology, sociology and racial justice. So there was a lot to cover in this episode! She describes bioacoustics and the technologies she works with for her PhD research as ‘Shazam for nature', which I think is fascinating – she explained how by listening to the sounds of nature we're able to monitor the health of ecosystems and enhance conservation work. We also spoke about the ethical implications of technology and how it can be used in service of nature and people, rather than against them. Another really important aspect of her work is participatory design, so she explained how she's working very closely with local communities to reduce racial and climate injustice by involving them in the process, getting their insights and feedback.Want to dive deeper?Subscribe to the Climate in Colour newsletter - https://climateincolour.substack.com/subscribe?utm_medium=web&utm_source=subscribe-widgetWatch Joycelyn's TED talk - https://tedxlondon.com/tedxlondon-countdown/programme/Come say hi!Climate in Colour on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/climateincolour/Joycelyn on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joycelynlongdon/Why We Care on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/whywecarepodcast/Tiphaine on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/tiphainemarie_/If you enjoyed the episode and want to help the podcast, I would be super grateful if you could leave a little review or share it with a friend who might like it.  Wedding guest sues Florida caterer after allegedly being served marijuana-laced food  According to a lawsuit, which was filed on Monday, Virginia Ann Tayor-Svoboda said she suffered "severe, permanent injuries" and became "immediately ill" after eating the food at the wedding. She alleged Joycelyn Bryan, who owns Joycelyn's Southern Kitchen Inc., was negligent in allowing marijuana into the food, and is seeking more than $30,000 in damages. She has demanded a jurat trial.  The wedding took place on Feb. 19, 2022, at The Springs Clubhouse in Longwood, Florida. Seminole County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the venue after some wedding guests began to complain of stomach pains and vomiting. Some guests were taken to the hospital, officials said.  Video from a deputy's body-worn camera showed a deputy ask the bride and groom if they authorized the catering company to put cannabis in the wedding food. One person responds "no, sir," while a woman appears to stare and does not respond.  The bride, later identified as Danya Glenny, and the catering manager, Bryant, were both arrested and booked into jail on several charges, including tampering with food and delivering marijuana.  Glenny, the bride, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to online court records. Bryant has also pleaded not guilty, according to online court records.  A bride and her caterer in Seminole County have been accused of lacing wedding food served to guests with marijuana, according to arrest warrant affidavits. Around 30-40 people were at the venue and several complained of stomach pains and vomiting, authorities said. In two affidavits, authorities state that the bride and caterer have been charged with culpable negligence, delivery of marijuana, and violating Florida's Anti-Tampering Act, according to the outlet.
