We're all practicing already, whether we know it or not, in the daily routines by which we live our days. And so we can ask ourselves whether the practices we're in the middle of now have us be in life in the way we wish for or value, or whether it's time to find a way to practice something new. A conversation about the gifts, challenges and possibilities of a life of intentional practice. This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. You can join our Episode 400 Live, 8 June 2025, here Here's our source for this week: On Practice All the world's great religious traditions know the value of practices, the daily acts of repetition and dedication that can so profoundly shape who we become. In our day to day lives we've mostly forgotten this – leaning towards tools or goals instead. Both have value, but without practice we miss something very important. The idea of practice is, at its heart, very simple. They're rehearsals of a quality or way of being in the world that we wish to cultivate. Done regularly and with purposeful intent, they gradually shape and reshape our relationship to ourselves and to the world. In this way practices are so very different to techniques or tools – which are intended to bring about some immediate shift or change in the world. And they're different again to goals – ways in which we've got committed to bringing about a particular state of affairs that we wish for. The wonderful possibility in good practices is that we take them up primarily for their own sake, not to change things in a hurry, nor to compare ourselves with standards we might never reach. We taken them up because doing them has its own intrinsic value, and because we flower and flourish in unexpected ways by being people who are practicing. And the other wonderful possibility in practice is that we can take it day at a time. Practice now, today. Be scrupulously kind to ourselves when we miss it or forget tomorrow. And begin, again, the next day. We're all practicing already, whether we know it or not, in the daily routines by which we live our days. And so we can all ask ourselves whether the practices we're in the middle of now have us be in life in the way we wish for or value, or whether it's time, at last, to find a way to practice something new. Today's poem is On Living by Nazim Hikmet, translated by Randy Blasing and Mutlu Konuk. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “My walk that morning brought forth the world in technicolor, piercing green trees, a blue sky screeching loud as a free jazz concert, a jogger's passing smile, soft, otherworldly. The earth hummed and throbbed. At a stoplight, I was suddenly filled with an inexplicable joy. My day of explosive happiness was counterintuitive. My inner world was actually gray; a family member has been battling cancer, another a victim of hurricanes, and then there was myself, ever negotiating the psychic demands of being present in a world where kindness feels in short supply.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: On Living, published by emre kaplan on August 3, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a famous Turkish poem by Nazım Hikmet. I just noticed its interesting overlap with some of the EA themes . Some here might find it motivating to read it. Translation by ChatGPT: On Living Living is no laughing matter: you must live with great earnestness like a squirrel, for example, I mean without looking for something beyond and above living, living must be your whole occupation. Living is no laughing matter: you must take it seriously, so much so and to such a degree that, for example, your hands tied behind your back, your back to the wall, or else in a laboratory in your white coat and safety glasses, you can die for people even for people whose faces you've never seen, even though nobody forced you to do so, even though you know living is the most real, the most beautiful thing. I mean, you must take living so seriously that even at seventy, for example, you'll plant olive trees and not for your children, either, but because although you fear death you don't believe it, because living, I mean, weighs heavier. II Let's say we're seriously ill, need surgery which is to say we might never get up from the white table. Even though it's impossible not to feel sad about going a little too soon, we'll still laugh at the jokes being told, we'll look out the window to see if it's raining, or still wait anxiously for the latest news. Let's say we're at the front for something worth fighting for, say. There, in the first offensive, on that very day, we might fall on our face, dead. We'll feel a strange, bitter anger, yet we'll still be consumed with worry about the war's outcome, which could drag on for years. Let's say we're in prison and close to fifty, and we have eighteen more years, say, before the iron doors will open. We'll still live with the outside, with its people and animals, struggle and wind I mean with the outside beyond the walls. I mean, however and wherever we are, we must live as if we will never die. III This earth will grow cold, a star among stars and one of the smallest, a gilded mote on blue velvet I mean this, our great earth. This earth will grow cold one day, not like a block of ice or a dead cloud even but like an empty walnut it will roll along in pitch-black space... You must grieve for this right now you have to feel this sorrow now for the world must be loved this much if you're going to say "I lived"... Thanks for listening. "All dying is a spiritual process," says our guest on this episode, hospice chaplain Kerry Egan. By this, she means that each person's death is more than just a biological event; it's an opportunity to reflect on the culmination of our human experiences, the lessons we've learned, and the impact we've had on others. The recognition of our impermanence prompts us to grapple with questions of legacy and purpose, infusing our mortal existence with depth and significance. Over the course of our conversation, Kerry describes how she became a chaplain, how she supports patients and other clinicians through difficult times, and the process of reconciling the strength of the human spirit with the limitations of the body.In this episode, you will hear about:An overview of hospice care and the role of the chaplain - 1:53The difference between hospital chaplaincy and hospice chaplaincy, and what led Kerry to this work - 7:15A discussion of the distinction between the person's physical body and their intangible soul, consciousness, or spirit - 26:00How a chaplain offers spiritual counseling to clinicians in addition to patients - 32:51How years of being a chaplain has taught Kerry to love her own body - 34:20Why viewing the body as a machine and the physician as a mechanic leads to harm - 39:01Kerry's advice to doctors for keeping compassion alive - 49:08Kerry Egan is the author of On Living, a memoir about her experiences as a hospice chaplain. You can follow Kerry Egan on Instagram @KerryEganWriter.Visit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In this special episode, PEN SA president Nadia Davids invites Justice Albie Sachs to reflect on his first book, The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs (1966) – a testament to his resistance and resilience during the harsh deprivations of imprisonment. Albie shares his experience of spending 168 days in solitary confinement, his struggle to convey the boredom and depression of detention as well as how he found beauty in writing about it. Albie Sachs is an activist, writer and former judge on the Constitutional Court of South Africa (1994 – 2009). He is the author of several books, including The Jail Diary of Albie Sachs, Justice in South Africa, Sexism and the Law, Soft Vengeance of a Freedom Fighter and The Strange Alchemy of Life and Law. His latest books are We, the People: Insights of an Activist Judge (2016) and Oliver Tambo's Dream (2017). In this episode we stand in solidarity with publisher, human rights defender and civil society leader Osman Kavala. In April 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison in Turkey. Albie has a personal and deeply moving message for Osman, and reads from Nâzım Hikmet's poem “On Living” as a tribute to him. Exploring C.S. Lewis's 1948 article, “On Living in an Atomic Age,” where Lewis challenges those who believe the natural realm is all there is to reality. If so, then nothing, not your joys, not your desires, says Lewis — not even the human race! — has any meaning or purpose. We reflect on how Lewis demonstrates the absurdity of this by using our anxiety over threats like nuclear war (or a pandemic?) to suggest that there must be more to reality than the natural world. We learn how Christians ought to view nature more soberly, as well as more hopefully! “On Living in an Atomic Age” can be found in the books "Present Concerns," and "Compelling Reason." My guest is another WINNING MIND from history: He was born in Ireland in 1898. His mother died when he was 10, and 1 month later he moved to England to attend school. He later joined the British army and fought in WW1. He was a friend if J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the “Lord of the Rings.” He was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. [He] wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. One of his works is the classic series: The Chronicles of Narnia. Who is this WINNING…and apparently, WRITING MIND? It is Clive Staples Lewis, also known as CS Lewis. This reading is called “On Living in an Atomic Age” is just one of the many essays in a book called “Present Concerns.” It is a collection of essays CS Lewis wrote and published during his life. It speaks of an Atomic Bomb, which I think is relevant to us now, but could also be substituted with the threat of pandemic, war, famine, or whatever else seems to threaten us any given year. Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this, and that it challenges you to think and live, and that it contributes to your next WINNING decision. Anthony Pompliano Pomp

OK, we admit, that's a bit of a provocative title. But... those are words from the lips of C.S. Lewis, so I'm sure you can forgive us. In this episode, we dissect his essay, ”On Living in an Atomic Age,” and his sermon, ”Learning in War-Time.” Both of these writings are filled with so much wisdom that we can apply to our lives during this tumultuous time. The words of C.S. Lewis in these works reminds us that the days we're living in aren't as novel as we'd believe and that no matter the circumstance, our objective and purpose in living doesn't change. But will we be faithful to the call? Or distracted? We hope you enjoy the nuggets of wisdom Lewis presents as much as we did! https://www.instagram.com/ritarogersco/ https://www.instagram.com/cecily.dickey/ https://bradleyggreen.com/attachments/Lewis.Learning%20in%20War-Time.pdf https://www.swordofthespirit.net/bulwark/april2020p7.htm HTTP://www.eventshistory.com/date/1939/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty. This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.— “On Living in an Atomic Age” (1948) in Present Concerns: Journalistic EssaysPacific Blue DIY SolarUnbound DIY Solar A Place to Hang the Moon, Kate Albus (Barnes and Noble)The Story of the World, Susan Wise Bauer (Barnes and Noble)The Supper of the Lamb: A Culinary Reflection, Robert Farrar Capon (Barnes and Noble)Eternal Surprise, T.M. In this 101st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we discuss the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.Beginning with a discussion of Room 101 from Orwell's 1984, we then share excerpts from Ross Douthat's forthcoming book, The Deep Place, with discussion of how we arrive at medical consensus, how long-term illness is often misunderstood by the medical establishment, and how weirdos on the internet can get things more right than the authorities. Rose and McCullough's research paper on myocarditis was pulled by the journal with no explanation; the letter that came back from the editor had no info in it. The Washington Post makes the extraordinary claim that “the public is observing the scientific method up-close and in real time.” New research finds that obstetricians are human and fallible, and prone to the same kinds of cognitive distortions that we all are. We read and then discuss C.S. Lewis's short 1948 essay, On Living in an Atomic Age. And we finish with a discussion of sea lions.Get your Goliath shirts right here: store.darkhorsepodcast.orgHeather's newsletter, Natural Selections (subscribe to get free weekly essays in your inbox; next post: vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19): https://naturalselections.substack.comSupport the sponsors of the show:ReliefBand: Get relief from nausea without drugs. We often feel alone, but can you feel alone on a team with a like minded purpose? Can you be depressed and isolated while receiving high fives? Aren't we all looking for a team and like minded people in this world with a similar purpose? It's easy to feel isolated and small, but can you be when connected to a broader truth? Isn't that where purpose is found?

Lewis gives us some good encouragement for right now: “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.” In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds. — C.S. Lewis, “On Living in an Atomic Age” (1948) FIRST THING: God is good. All the time. "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!" - Psalm 34:8 Second: He cares deeply for his children. "“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?" - Matthew 6:25-34 Third: We can trust Him with our lives, our futures, and our kids. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7 ---> God will work all things out for his glory and our good. A look at eschatology I am not going to get into a huge eschatological debate here, but we do need to address something. By and large, the American or western church has become very complacent about the future. With the dispensational premillenial view point of the end times being so prevalent in American Evangelism (think: left behind and sudden rapture), it has left so many of us feeling very apathetic and lazy about the future. I think we've adopted a very fatalistic viewpoint of the end times. The dis-premill position is that things will just keeping getting worse until bam, Christ's Church is raptured. While it's not true for all churches, it does seem that when we look at the past year and a half, the church has become apathetic. We look around and see the world going down hill and kind of give up. We become apathetic.

On Living with God's Kingdom in mind, On Possessions and Worry
This week, I sit down with Steven Webb, host of the Stillness in the Storms podcast, a show that helps you find inner peace at difficult times. Each episode, Steven brings a different perspective and way of living life that eases your suffering. Being severely paralyzed is just a fraction of Steven’s mountain climb to find his inner peace. If Steven can sit with stillness, you can also. It’s the first time, really, that being paralyzed really creeped up.Steven talks about the moment that he hit rock bottom when he was forty. At that moment, it felt that his life had come to a grinding halt, and that he was going to be truly alone, and couldn’t see how his future was going to play out. The Dark Night of the SoulSteven talks about how, leading up to his darkest moment, he had been thinking about all the things that were going wrong in his life, and likened it to The Dark Night of the Soul, a poem by John of the Cross. I was creating everything that was terrible in the world, and I was the victim of everything. As Steven sank deeper into depression, he began drinking, and he shares how the embarrassment of needing to ask his carers to pour him a drink was a major turning point in getting his life back together. On Living in Invisible ShameOne of the things that Steven pushed back on in his early years was the belief by others that he was doing something amazing or inspiring. If he heard people say that, he’d run away. But then he realized it was pretty amazing when it came to what he’s done: Multiple charity challenges Organizing music festivals Running in politics and becoming the deputy mayor elect Steven talks about how it took him a long time to accept people were being genuine, and not just saying or doing something out of pity for his disability. I don’t look at it as incredible for being paralyzed to do that; it’s just incredible for me.Why It’s Important to ReflectIn one of the episodes on Steven’s podcast, he talks about the anniversary of his accident - not just to the year, but the exact day and time that it happened. In that episode, Steven recounts the moments of the day leading up to his accident. Steven does this every year, and as he mentions in our chat, he reflects more on that than he does his own birthday. He believes it’s because it was such an ordinary day like any other, until it wasn’t, that it remains so clear and so remembered. It was just an ordinary day; but we never know when it’s the last day we’ll do that ordinary thing. How His Difficult Childhood Served Him Well for What Lay AheadWhen Steven was a young child, his parents were divorced, and he, his sister, and his mum were left homeless. At the time, he thought it was a big adventure and something cool - after all, they eventually moved into a big house. It was only afterward that he learned it was a refuge for women. This knowledge of having nothing and losing everything helped shape an important mindset for what was to come. Hey friends, we have a birthday special this week! Not only is it my birthday and sort of the birthday of the show (after first trying out the format on a little thing called Instagram live as a mini-party online because we were just entering a pandemic..) it is also the birthday of my mum, Grace, AND my fabulous guest, the wonderful Jake Wild Hall!I begin with a birthday remix, bring the pi day/mother's day crossover the world has been waiting for, borrow a poem from friend of the show Erin Bolens and finish on a poem dedicated to four people at once, including myself.Jake takes us on a journey via optimism and grief, with a borrowed poem On Living on the way - we talk about his Twitter world cups, the fantastic Bad Betty press, one of my favourite poetry nights ever Boomerang, as well as descending into a very specific middle-eastern pun-off. Jake always brings a smile to my face and I hope this is the same for you.You can find him on Twitter here, as well as following Bad Betty and Boomerang. You can find me on Twitter here or watch future episodes on Instagram here. You can support me and the podcast here or my marathon fundraising efforts here.

There must be overflow into the lives of others. –Eugene Peterson Seventy-two years ago, a novel threat emerged on the earth, inciting a proportionate pandemic of fear around the globe. In that hour, it was the advent of the atomic bomb, a weapon whose potential for immediate and global destruction was unprecedented. The pressing and consequential question of that age was “How should we now live in light of this new and deadly threat?” C. S. Lewis wrote the following in response: In one way we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.” In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds. “On Living in an Atomic Age” (1948) in Present Concerns: Journalistic Essays Following Lewis's counsel, one of the “human things” we can do is gather, albeit virtually, to connect and be strengthened by the stories of others. Together, we can imagine, dream, question, and unite in prayer, and thereby enact a power beyond ourselves that will steady and focus us as we continue in the sacred and sometimes mundane work of being found at our post on any and every day. To this end, I have gathered some of my most trusted companions for mutual strengthening; we are inviting you to gather with us as well. Our hope is that as a global fellowship of like-hearted men, we can encourage each other in “sensible and human things,” and as one, bring more and more of the reign of Heaven to more and more of the domain of earth. Our world is at a rare juncture; the global crisis of our age offers a fresh and remarkably accessible opportunity to return our need and our personal story back to the Hero and Author of the Larger Story from which we originated. There is so much goodness to fight for here. Long-standing strongholds can be broken. Shattered relationships and lives can be restored. Lost things can be found. Life can be recovered. Light shines brighter in darkness. Come, join us. We're glad you're here. For the Kingdom,
