You may be in the market for a new camera, and can't decide whether to buy a DSLR or mirrorless camera, or simply wish to understand the difference between the two. Welcome to the Visual Storytelling podcast. In this episode I discuss the disadvantages of telephoto lenses. Don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom as I also touch upon some of the advantages and their key benefits. If you're in the market for a telephoto lens, my recommendation would be to try before you buy. Do your due diligence before hand, understand why you need one and then research the best telephoto that suits your requirements, then hire one over the course of a few days to see whether you were right. To achieve a shallow depth of field in your photographs and create that beautiful background blur (bokeh) effect, follow these steps: 1. Use a Wide Aperture. 2. Use a Large Sensor Camera. 3. Get Closer to Your Subject. 4. Use a Telephoto Lens. 5. Increase the Focal Length. 6. Focus on the Subject. 7. Lower ISO and Use a Tripod. 8. Use ND Filters. 9. Shoot in Aperture Priority or Manual Mode. 10. Experiment and Practice. Remember that the exact settings and techniques may vary depending on your camera and lens, so it's essential to familiarise yourself with your specific gear. Additionally, the distance between your subject and the background, as well as the quality of the background (e.g., distant lights or foliage), can also impact the quality of the bokeh effect. I'm looking to have more guests on the podcast to provide you with more value. In a previous episode I discussed which lens is best for portrait photography and spoke about common portrait lenses. In this episode focus more on the actual focal lengths. The choice of focal length lens for shooting portraits can significantly impact the look and feel of the final image. Lets look at some differences as well as benefits of using different focal lengths: 1. Wide-Angle Lens (24mm to 35mm). 2. Standard/Normal Lens (50mm). 3. Short Telephoto Lens (85mm to 135mm). 4. Medium Telephoto Lens (135mm to 200mm+). The choice of focal length should also consider the specific look you want to achieve, the available space, and the comfort of your subject. Ultimately, it's a creative decision that can vary based on your style and the story you want to tell in your portraits. In the early days of my career, I had the chance to go through Sandler Sales Training. While there, I met my two wonderful guests for this episode, Emily Davidson and Mike Montague. The principles they taught in that course provide excellent strategies that you can use during this year's Q4 to help prepare for Q1 next year. Take notes and listen to their game plan, which will surely help you close more deals before the new year. Common BDR Challenges During Q4 You may wonder how to make the most of the remaining months of the year. Which deals should you focus on? Should you let any clients go if you know they won't make a decision before the end of the year? These challenges can cause a lot of anxiety, but with a strategic plan, you can overcome them. Mike suggests continuing to prospect during this time. You don't want to start the new year trying to rebuild your sales pipeline. Don't start fresh in 2025 and bring Q4 clients along. Prioritizing Deals You may find yourself with deals that are moving very slowly through the pipeline or with nothing at all. What actions should you prioritize to help close deals? Follow the Sandler Sales Training Care Plan, where you assess your accounts and prioritize which ones to keep. Mike and Emily provide examples of the Care Plan to help you understand how to apply it to your situation. Sales leaders may need to help team members prioritize their deals. Sometimes an outside perspective can help a sales rep view their accounts objectively. Be Creative with Your Prospecting During this time of year, most sales reps are out enjoying the holiday festivities like everyone else. You may be tempted to do the same, but if you want to close deals, you'll have to put in some work. The good news is, if you get creative with your approach, you can still have fun while doing it. Attend the Christmas parties, but use the opportunity to talk to decision-makers. Don't take a vacation during this time—use it to cold-call CEOs and presidents. The key is to work smarter, not harder, during this season. “Our job is to create an atmosphere and environment that allows the customer to buy while the salesperson stays out of the way.” - Mike Montague. “Looking at your accounts through the lens of the Care Plan will help you break down those targets into categories. You can focus on which ones are a priority to keep.” - Emily Davidson. Resources “The 12 Week Year,” by Brian P. 179 - Be Creative to Make A Connection In this podcast episode, we discuss how to improve the lives of others by exploring Joe Polish's book, "What's in it for them? Nine networking principles to get what you want by helping others get what they want." I highlight the importance of investing time, attention, money, effort, and energy to foster connections and relationships. It's crucial to adapt our approach to each individual, understanding their unique contexts and needs. Additionally, I emphasize the value of creativity in building relationships and share personal anecdotes to illustrate how "thinking outside the box" can help establish a connection. He stresses the significance of being reliable, the person others can rely on, metaphorically speaking. This means being available and responsive, whether it's dealing with support tickets, emails, or direct conversations. We need to be patient, even with those we don't necessarily like or relate to, and work towards understanding their needs. He also cautions against getting lost in other people's problems, overcommitting, or becoming susceptible to energy vampires. It's vital to maintain balance and protect oneself while being helpful and supportive. I explore the importance of being practical in problem-solving. It's not enough to listen and empathize; we must offer solutions that meet the actual needs of the people we're dealing with. This requires understanding their problems, asking the right questions, and genuinely listening to their responses. Offering solutions should go beyond the standard "guidebook" responses and involve genuinely thoughtful, personalized, and feasible solutions. Find someone they're somewhat distant with and attempt to bridge that gap. By understanding what makes that person tick, they can start to appreciate them more and figure out how to be of genuine help. Take small steps towards making people feel appreciated, even those who might seem a bit unlovable. https://geniusnetwork.com https://startwithsmallsteps.com/179-be-creative-to-make-a-connection/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/SmallStepsPod Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

On this episode of the "Helping Families be Happy Podcast," host, Christopher Robbins husband and father of nine, residing in the Central Valley of California talks to Mary Potter Kenyon. She holds a BA in psychology from the University of Northern Iowa and is a therapeutic art coach and certified grief counselor trained under renowned grief expert David Kessler. Mary is also an author of six books, including "Expressive Writing for Healing," "Refined by Fire," and "Called to Be Creative." She conducts workshops on creativity, finding hope and healing in grief, and expressive writing. Episode Highlights 01:56: Mary started journaling after her first husband passed away in March 2012 and has filled over 20 journals since then. 02:31: Christopher expresses curiosity about the significance of journaling, especially for those who may have started journaling as children with entries like "Dear Diary." He asks Mary to share the science behind journaling, its importance for personal development, and ways to develop the habit. 02:43: Mary reminisces about having a little diary with a lock and key when she was 12 but mentions that she got rid of it as she grew up. 02:58: Mary mentions the concept of expressive writing for healing, which is not about passing something down but rather a tool for personal healing. 04:42: The discussion highlights the therapeutic benefits of journaling and how it has been found to be effective in numerous studies and scenarios, making it a valuable tool for individuals facing a range of challenges and emotions. 06:05: Mary addresses common hurdles that people face when starting a journaling practice and she advices on how to begin and what to write about. 08:59: Journaling might not be a daily practice for everyone. It's okay to journal on weekends, once a week, or even less frequently, as long as it fits into your routine and serves as a beneficial outlet for your thoughts and emotions. 10:45: Christopher discusses the various journaling methods he has tried, from hardcover lined journals to leather-bound art paper journals to simple composition notebooks. 11:41: Christopher and Mary discusses whether using technology for journaling is a good or bad thing and explores the convenience and potential drawbacks of digital journaling apps. 13:19: Some people may prefer typing due to comfort or practical reasons, such as arthritis or illegible handwriting. Mary acknowledges that digital journaling can be a valid and accessible option. 15:02: Mary discusses the therapeutic and reflective benefits of journaling, even during periods of joy and contentment in life. 17:22: Mary discusses the value of reading and preserving personal journals for future generations. 18:06: Mary shares her own experience of reading her mother's letters from the 1960s, which offer a glimpse into her mother's life as a mother raising ten children. She highlights how journals and letters can reveal a person's growth, struggles, and the different facets of their life beyond their roles as parents. 19:36: Mary and encourages listeners to consider starting their own journaling practice in the coming year, emphasizing that journaling is a low-cost and accessible way to document their experiences and emotions. 3 Key Points Mary encourages the idea that journaling should be a freeing and expressive practice that suits your unique style and preferences. The key is to make it a personal space where you can process your thoughts, emotions, and experiences without worrying about judgment or rules. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to journaling. It's about finding the time and style that work best for you and making it a meaningful and consistent practice in your life. Mary and Christopher underscores the therapeutic and historical significance of journaling as a tool for personal growth and self-reflection. Tweetable Quotes “Journaling is not a new practice it is historical documents that often exist because people kept journals or diaries. It's a way of preserving history.” – Mary “There are no rules in journaling. You don't have to worry about neat handwriting, perfect spelling, or adhering to specific guidelines. It's a personal space for your thoughts and feelings, and it's okay if it's messy.” – Mary Journaling can help individuals process their thoughts and emotions, whether they are going through difficult times or experiencing moments of gratitude and growth.” - Mary Resources Mentioned Helping Families Be Happy Podcast Apple Podcast Editing
